Longtime readers may remember the announcement from years ago that I’d be digitizing back issues of the newsletter to add to our online archive. Unfortunately, the project proved much more difficult than expected. The biggest challenge was actually finding those back issues, even with the generous help of our members. (Special thanks are due to Ellen Eddy and Mary Hammersmith, who several years ago sent me a big boxful of their personal collections from the ’70s and ’80s.)

Earlier in 2018 I was able to fill the remaining gaps thanks to Bill Harris at the Central Office, and over the spring I finally finished scanning everything in.

Now begins the second stage: expanding the online archives. Starting with 2008 (previously the earliest year available) I’ve been gradually adding issues in reverse chronological order. So far I’ve made it as far back as the late ’80s, and now it’s time to pause for travel to summer renkontiĝoj. Earlier issues will be added in late summer and fall.

The issues added so far can all be viewed in our online archive, and there’s also an RSS feed for keeping track of the future uploads.

You may notice that issues prior to 2008 are available in PDF form only. These PDF files are essentially just photographs of the printed page, created by a scanner. While PDF is great for archives, it would be nice to have some articles in text format (HTML) too. Text is much easier to search, can be read on a variety of devices (smartphones, screen readers for the blind, etc.) and is sharable in social media.

It isn’t necessary to create text for everything, but my goal is to have the most historically significant articles in both text and PDF form. And for that, I need your help. Specifically, I need proofreaders to compare computer-generated text files with their corresponding PDF images. The task is technically and linguistically simple (no knowledge of Esperanto is needed), and it will help to preserve our history for future generations. Legantoj de multaj jaroj eble memoras mian anoncon ciferigi malnovajn numerojn de la bulteno por aldoni al nia retarĥivo. Bedaŭrinde, la tasko montriĝis multe pli malfacila ol mi atendis. La ĉefa defio estis efektive trovi la malnovajn numerojn, eĉ kun la sindonema helpo de niaj membroj. (Aparte meritas laŭdojn Ellen Eddy kaj Mary Hammersmith, kiuj antaŭ kelkaj jaroj sendis al mi skatolegon da siaj propraj ekzempleroj el la ’70-aj kaj ’80-aj jaroj.)

Pli frue en 2018 mi sukcesis ŝtopi la lastajn breĉojn helpe de Vilĉjo Harris en la Centra Oficejo, kaj en la printempo mi finfine enskanis ĉion.

Nun komenciĝas la sekva stadio: poioma pligrandigo de la reta arĥivo. Komencinte per 2008, (antaŭe la plej malnova jaro havebla) mi poiome aldonas numerojn en inversa ordo. Lastatempe mi atingis la ’80-ajn jarojn, kaj nun paŭzas por foriri al someraj renkontiĝoj. Sekvos pli fruaj jaroj en malfrua somero kaj aŭtuno.

Ĉiuj numeroj jam aldonitaj estas libere haveblaj en nia reta arĥivo, kaj ekzistas ankaŭ retfluo (RSS) kiu anoncos estontajn alŝutojn.

Vi eble rimarkos, ke numeroj antaŭ 2008 haveblas nur en PDF-formo. La PDF-dosieroj estas esence fotoj de la presitaj folioj, kreitaj de skanilo. Kvankam PDF bone taŭgas por arĥivoj, estus preferinde havi iujn artikolojn en ankaŭ teksta (HTML-a) formo. Teksto estas pli facile serĉebla, legebla en diversspecaj aparatoj (poŝtelefonoj, ekranlegiloj por blinduloj, ktp), kaj dividebla per sociaj komunikiloj.

Ne necesas tekstigi ĉion, sed mia celo estas finfine tekstigi la plej historie gravajn artikolojn. Kaj por tio, mi petas vian helpon. Specife, mi bezonas provlegantojn por kompari komputile rekonitajn tekstojn kun la respondaj PDF-bildoj. La tasko estas teknike kaj lingve tre simpla (efektive, eĉ ne necesas koni Esperanton), kaj ĝi helpos konservi nian historion por estontaj generacioj.
