Atendi is a “false friend” for English speakers learning Esperanto. It means “to wait for,” “to await,” “to expect.” For example:

Mi atendas gravan leteron.
Atendu min ĉe la restoracio.
Mi atendas, ke pluraj homoj venos al la kunsido.
Fidela hundo atendas sian mastron fine de la tago.

It doesn’t mean “to attend” in the sense of “to be present at,” “to participate in,” etc. Esperanto has a range of other verbs for these meanings. Here are several with examples:

• ĉeesti (ĉe/esti) means to be present at: Mi ĉeestis koncerton hieraŭ.

• partopreni (parto/preni) means to take part in, to participate in: Ĉu vi volas partopreni nian diskutrondon (or: partopreni en nia diskutrondo)?

• viziti, vizitadi means to attend (school, lessons, etc.): Ŝia filo vizitadas bazlernejon.

• prizorgi means to attend to (someone’s needs): Li prizorgas sian nepon ĉiusemajne.

• atenti means to attend to (pay attention to): Infanoj, atentu vian instruiston!
