Social media is a necessary evil. It takes up countless hours of our time, causes drama, and makes people vulnerable to criminal activity. But, it also brings the world together. Social media has drastically helped increase the popularity of Esperanto worldwide in the last few years. As of February 14, 2019, the Esperanto-USA Facebook page has 3,543 likes. This is an increase from February 2018’s total of 2,807 likes. Although this does not seem like a huge number, it shows that interest in Esperanto is still growing.

As you may have noticed, the board of E-USA has shifted a lot of its focus to social media efforts over the last few years. We are now on Reddit, Discord, and we have a Facebook discussion group. The E-USA Twitter account is also fairly active. Social media allows us to identify Esperantists in our area with the app Amikumu; Slowly, a newer app, lets us message Esperantists around the world who want to communicate as pen pals.

Do you actively use social media as part of your Esperanto studies? What would you like to see more of? Let us know.
