In a message to the public, UEA mourned the passing of “the great internationalist and humanist His Holiness Pope Francis … the first Pope from the Americas, born in Argentina.” “Pope Francis was not only the leader of the Catholic Church,” the Association pointed out,“but also a worldwide voice for peace, justice, and ecological awareness – values especially important to internationalists and particularly to Esperantists, speakers of the International Language Esperanto.” “Pope Francis tirelessly defended the dignity and acceptability of all people – particularly the poor, immigrants, indigenous peoples, and the forgotten – and he encouraged dialogue across all barriers of diversity, culture, religion and ideology.” UEA, itself neutral on matters of religion, addressed its special condolences “to the Catholic community and to all people of good will, particularly the members of the International Esperantist Catholic Union IKUE and to the Esperanto team at the Vatican Radio.” Vatican Radio, the message pointed out has for decades broadcast in Esperanto. Also: “Several of the texts of Pope Francis have been published in Esperanto, among them Laudato Si, Laudato Deum, and Ne timu, estas mi, a collection of his writings on migrants and refugees.” The message pointed out that “as a polyglot and internationalist,” Pope Francis “spoke eight languages and understood the value of linguistic and cultural diversity.” The message added that “after his visit to Mexico in February 2016, Pope Francis was asked by a journalist whether he dreams in Italian or in Spanish. He replied: ‘I would say that I dream in Esperanto.’ The reply was symbolic: as far as we know, Pope Francis did not speak the international language Esperanto; but he was indeed a supporter of its ideals.” “An organization dedicated to intercultural dialogue and sustainable development, UEA values highly Pope Francis’s contributions to a more peaceful and just world in which international solidarity is a core value. A true citizen of the world, Pope Francis, through his life and works, left an immeasurable legacy for all humankind. He brought hope to all – believers and nonbelievers alike. And hope was the essence of the message of another great humanist, the creator of Esperanto, Ludwik Zamenhof, who wrote hope into the very name of his language.”

La surpriza elekto de la unua usona papo naskiĝinta en Ĉikago, Robert Francis Prevost, kiel Papo Leo (Leono) XIV (14-a) estas ankaŭ kuraĝiga paŝo, ŝajne ebligita de lia konatiĝo kun la pli novaj kardinaloj de plej diversaj landoj nomumitaj de Papo Francisko. Liaj ducivitaneco (Usono kaj Peruo) kaj monda perspektivo, lia dekomenca insisto pri mesaĝo de paco kaj unueco kaj neakcepto de kontraŭhoma agado, aŭguras daŭrigon de la plej altaj aspiroj de lia antaŭulo. Aparte signifa por ni estas, ke kiel denaska parolanto de la angla lingvo, li elektis ne uzi ĝin en la unua publika apero, sed alparolis la publikon en la tradicia latina, la itala kaj la hispana, kiujn li alproprigis al si, kaj per kiuj li nature komunikas.

Ne estos facila rolo, sed ni havas la rajton esperi, ke lia elektiĝo donos novan impeton al paco kaj unueco, kunlaborigado por tion atingi en la mondo, kaj ne malplej grave, konscio ke neinsisto pri prioritata uzo de la angla lingvo internacie indikas fundamentan respekton al la popoloj de la mondo kaj la egaleco de iliaj lingvoj kaj kulturoj.
