Presita el Usona Esperantisto № 2024:4
Bookmark Design Contest
This contest was first announced in UE № 2024:3; the editors encourage readers to participate while the contest is still active!
How would you like a chance to win some extra money by promoting Esperanto? Esperanto-USA and the Promotions Committee are sponsoring a bookmark design contest for the purpose of drawing attention to our beautiful language.
You are invited to design creative bookmarks to pique the interest of people who have never heard of Esperanto. The goal is to invite them to use the QR code, which will display more information about Esperanto and Esperanto-USA.
The prizes are:
- First Prize: $250
- Second Prize: $150
- Third Prize: $100
So send us up to three amazing, creative designs! Here is what we are looking for:
- Entries must be submitted by midnight US eastern time on March 31, 2025.
- The design must be submitted in a format that can be edited with Canva Pro.
- A PDF version of a design is also required for easy viewing by a panel of judges.
- All fonts that are used must be free to use and editable in Canva Pro (see link above).
- The bookmark size will be 6” x 2”. We have chosen this size because it’s convenient for books in Little Free Libraries.
- All bookmark design entries are the property of Esperanto-USA.
- No copyrighted designs or elements can be used.
- Up to three designs can be submitted by each contestant. Each entry must have a unique name and must identify the contestant.
- All entries must be the work of the contestant. AI (Artificial Intelligence) can be used as inspiration. The exclusive use of AI is discouraged.
- Entries will be uploaded to a Google Form that will collect information so prize money can be sent. Be sure you submit both a PDF and an editable file.
Here are some criteria for a winning design:
- An attractive design such that it will not be discarded immediately. Ideally the person who has the bookmark will want to keep it and use it.
- Only enough text to raise interest to go to a E-USA webpage to find out about Esperanto.
- Promotes Esperanto while avoiding stereotypes. An example of a stereotype is a green bookmark with a white star.
- Something unique is desired that motivates people to visit the webpage to find out what Esperanto is.
- The goal is to expose the public to the word “Esperanto” (language and community) and not to sell Esperanto or recruit people to learn Esperanto. Those seeking more information will decide to learn Esperanto, or not, based on the information they find on the webpage.
- Each design should allow room for a QR code and wording similar to: “To find out more: www.esperanto-usa.org/more” (exact link and page to come at a later date).
- Here are some suggested places to put the bookmarks:
- Public libraries, to be made available to the public.
- With books available in Little Free Libraries.
- Bookstores.
- Events where there is an Esperanto information booth, such as: international festivals, ham radio events, sci-fi conferences, etc.
- Other places as appropriate.
