Presita el Usona Esperantisto № 2014:4-6
Esperanto during the Great War
One hundred years ago, the first world war started. It is a sad, but revealing chapter of history, with several empires struggling against each other after a political assassination. This great tragedy has led to other ones, such as the Great Depression and World War Two.
In the midst of this sad story, the new Universala Esperanto-Asocio, putting to use the language invented by Doctor Zamenhof, helped keep alive relationships between friends and family members separated by the war through an extensive postal network.
We need to remember the lessons of World War One. We need to remember and thank God for these valiant Esperantists working for peace.
