PRESBYTERIAN LIFE, April carried a letter about Esperanto written by Mrs. ADAH MILLER in answer to an article about a woman who was 'walking for peace' and stated she believed the world needed a universal language. Mrs. Miller's reply informed her and all the readers, that such a language was already a reality --it was Esperanto. Good work. Don't forget about regional meetings. Plan now for the fall months. If not one as ambitious as the Solvang meet in California, then try one for size similar to the Richmond Wash, one organized by Bill Shanks. Only increased benefits for Esperanto can result from such group contacts. It's not too early to start things rolling now. Remember our goal is 1000 members by July 22, when we meet in Portland. If each person would be responsible for just one additional new member we would have met the challange. Passing note: EIC has had 126 new memberships come thru their office from January 1 to April 26 to help strenghen ELBA. Once a month, for the past year, ALLEN FINEBERG, wrote to the magazine Soviet Life to publish an article on the use of Esperanto in the Soviet Union. At long last, the publishers have assured Mr. Fineberg that they will print such an article in the December issue. Soviet Life is a reciprocal magazine to the publication America which is brought out in this country for the Russian people. PORTLAND NEWS Gerry Peterson's committee collected over k-00 signatures on the UN petition last month at Portland State College. Plans are underway to offer signing opportunities at other collages in the area. Anne Whitteker got a local calligrapher to reproduce the petition text in poster size for display whereever petitions will be shown. Hazel Heusser's enthusiastic fifth-grade Esperantists at Woodmere School recently made a tape of Esperanto songs and comments to send to an interested second grade at another school. These junior linguists have undertaken many other Esperanto projects - bulletin board displays, science fair exhibits("Science of Linguistics," naturally), an Esperanto Valentine sent to, and shown on, a local TV program. Mrs. Heusser, who is also on the board of directors of Portland's very active John R. Leach YMCA, has finished teaching a 20-week Esperanto course, sponsored by the board as part of its program to strengthen international understanding. This energetic educator promotes Esperanto wherever she goes -- such places as the Pacific Nortiwest YMCA Conference! Annette Greenland was one of the speakers at Rigler Elementary School's PTA meeting in March. On view that evening for the first time was a beautiful traveling display case (full of'Esperantoajoj"), the lumber and labor for which were donated by Mr. and Mrs. Lesley Krist, members of ESOP, Portland's Esperanto group. Mr. Krist is a professional cabinet-maker. ESPO provided sliding plexiglas tops for the flat double case, each "twin" of which measures about 32" x 37" x 2", a convenient size to be easily transported by car.
