ELNA Kongreso 2002
kaj afabla vetero. Mi pakis ŝortojn, bankalsonon,
ktp. Ha! Bluaj ĉieloj, jes, sed malvarmaprintempa
vetero dum la kongreso. Bonŝance, mi ankaŭ pakis
jaketon. (Poste, dum laekskursoj, varmegas). Do,
sabatmatene, Duncan CHARTERS
prelegis pri "Kial kaj kien ELNA?"
Sekvis "Recenzo de novaj libroj", kun
Don HARLOW, kaj samtempe "Historio
de ELNA", de Bill HARMON.
Kongresanoj ricevis ekzempleron de A
History of the Esperanto League for North
America, Inc., de Bill HARMON, tuta
kvindekjara historio kun multaj fotoj
kaj apendicoj.
Tagmeze malfermiĝis
Librovendejo, kiu estis tuj plenŝtopita
de aĉetantoj. Poste estis ELNA
Aferkunsido (la unua), kaj sekvis
samtempaj programoj; AAIE (Amerika
Asocio de Instruistoj de Esperanto)
kunsidon gvidis Ron GLOSSOP, kaj
estis du teknikaj programoj. Fred
MEYER prelegis pri "Siliciaj tranĉaĵoj:
Fundamento de modernaj integritaj
cirkvitoj", kaj George BAKER pri
"Desegno de pendponto", la nova ponto
trans la Golfeto inter Sanfrancisko kaj
Oklando. Sekvis Konversaciaj Rondoj
kun Anna BENNETT, kaj "Pasporta
Servo", kun Ed WILLIGER.
La vespera programo estis pikniko
en Eltrovaja Parko, post mallonga
promeno de la kongesejo. Ĝi estas bela
kaj tre populara loko. Ni havis ne nur
bonajn manĝaĵojn, sed ankaŭ bonajn
distrajojn; Miko SLOPER portis liniajn
sketŝuojn, apuda grupo havis "pinata"
(ĉu pinjato?), kelkuloj ludis gitarojn kaj
kantis, kaj Anatole LUBOVICH, kun
Miko, prezentis skeĉon pri la trouzo de
"mal" en urbo "Malblasfemo"
(Sakramento).
Kiom da esperantistoj oni povas
paki en telefona budo? Mi ne scias, sed
post la pikniko ni provis paki tutan
konferencon en la ĉambro de Doroteo
HOLLAND por vidi porciojn de "Pasporto
al la tuta mondo", kiujn prezentis Lusi
HARMON (la kunsidejoj estis ŝlositaj,
kaj neniu havis ŝlosilon). Ni
malsukcesis en la pakado, do ni
dumtempe akaparis la koridoron.
Dimanĉmatene, Duncan CHAR-
TERS prezentis unuan parton de
instrukurseto pri uzado de "Pasporto".
Alterne, ni havis prelegojn pri
Mondfederacio de Ron GLOSSOP,
Lingva Forumo kun Alexander
SHLAFER, kaj "Vojaĝante bicikle" de
Jacob SCHWARTZ.
Posttagmeze estis ELNA
Aferkunsido (la dua). Sekvis aŭ "Lude

kaj "UEA delegitreto" de Bill HARMON,

Bill HARMON, Henry STUDER, Steve

Esperantan tradukon de la muzea
broŝureto.
La Ŝtata Indiĝena Muzeo estas
ankaŭ vizitinda, se oni interesitas pri
la popoloj kiu loĝis tie antaŭe. Gi havas
multajn ekspoziciajojn, fotojn,
artefaktojn, k.a. Apude estas la
Fortikajo de Sutter, rekonstruajo de la
originala, kun ekspoziciajoj kaj
artefaktoj. Gi ankaŭ havas "vivan
historion", kun homoj en periodaj
vestajoj, kiuj montras aspektojn de la
vivo en la 1840-a jardeko.
Laste estis la tuttagmarda vizito
al la Orkamparo. Kelkuloj vojaĝis aŭte
al Indiĝena Muelroka Stata Historia
Parko, kie estas granda areo de malmol/
bazoroko. Gi estas kovrita de truoj, kie
la indiĝenaj Miŭokoj muelis glanojn por
supo, pano, k.s.

Do, necesas nur danki al Henry
jarkongreso.

Esperanto at the West Virginia Governor's Honors Academy
For three weeks in July, I taught
an introductory class in Esperanto at
the West Virginia Governor's Honors
Academy, held at Marshall University
in Huntington, WV.
Over 160 outstanding high school
students who will be entering their
senior years in high schools all over
West Virginia are invited to participate
in the Academy, which is an opportu-
nity for students to partake in classes
not generally available in their schools.
My class of thirteen students included
many who had previously taken Latin,
French, German, and Spanish, and at
least one student with no prior foreign
language experience.
We met for fourteen two-and-a-half
hour sessions, using the text Teach
Yourself Esperanto, and the Nixon Espe-
ranto Vocabulary, which we acquired
through ELNA. We were only able to
cover seven units, but the students
were very interested and enthusiastic.
We also sang Esperanto songs, wrote
By Kavier Garcia
postcards, and performed a skit (par-
tially in Esperanto, and for the purposes
of promoting the language) for the all-
academy Performance Expo, held at the
conclusion of the three weeks.
Overall, the class was, I think, a
great success. In addition to the inter-
est of the students in the class, I was
able to speak informally to many other
students and faculty about Esperanto,
dispelling many myths ("Isn't Esperanto
a dead language?" "Esperanto is a form
of Spanish, isn't it?" "Esperanto isn't
a 'real' language, is it?"), and encour-
aging all to find out about the language
by taking the 10-lesson mail course, the
first lesson of which I distributed to as
many students as expressed an inter-
est.
Of the students I taught, one has
already been accepted into West Point,
and has expressed an interest in form-
ing an Esperanto Club there someday.
Another student has already begun e-
mailing me in Esperanto, and seriously
wishes to pursue it via independent
study during his senior year. One of
my fellow teachers there demonstrated
a special interest in the language, bor-
rowed an extra text, and by the end of
the three weeks, was conversing with
me in Esperanto.
In conclusion, I must add that I am
not yet where I want to be in my own
study of the language. I felt a little ill
at ease because I am new to Espe-
ranto. Yet, my experience as a Span-
ish teacher and my own enthusiasm for
Esperanto enabled me to introduce stu-
dents to the some of the rudiments of
the language, as well as to expose them
to its potential usefulness to them.
Since I plan to apply for next year's
Academy, this year's experience will go
a long way toward helping me teach oth-
ers throughout our state. By then, I
would expect my fluency and comfort
level will have increased, and I would
expect continued success.
Intensive Weekend Course in North Texas
The Esperanto Club of North Texas held an
intensive weekend course July 19-21 from 7pm
Friday evening to 5pm Sunday afternoon.
The course and lodging were at the home of
Joe and Anna Burba, with some of the Dallasites
preferring to spend the night at their own homes.
Some of the out of town visitors stayed at a hotel.
Fourteen attended the course, including the three
instructors.
The nekrokodila policy was that only
Esperanto was to be spoken when the Esperanto
flag was raised, and English was permitted only
when the green crocodile picture was displayed
and the Esperanto flag was lowered. The
instructor or leader for each session could decide
the nature of each session. Most of the sessions
were nekrokodila.
The primary teaching tool was the Pasporto
video series. We made much use of the Pasporto
teaching techniques that were presented at the
ELNA Congress in Sacramento by Duncan
Charters. Each session was 45 minutes long with
a 15-minute break between sessions. The sessions
were with the Pasporto videos, other teaching
techniques, games, songs, or readings. Rhanda,
our blind Esperantist, read an article by Den
Drown from her Braille Esperanto collection.
There were four song sessions.
We surveyed the participants ahead of time
for special eating requirements, and designed the
menus to be suitable according to diabetic,
vegetarian, and allergic needs. All the food was
prepared there except for Friday's dinner that
was prepared ahead of time by several
participants.
The age range was open to anybody, with
minors needing a parent in attendance according
to age. The thirteen-year-old was certainly
allowed to attend, because she was going on to
the UK in Brazil after the course. The 9 year old
home-schooled boy attended one day with his
grandfather, who is also his teacher in their school.
This was not the club's first weekend course,
but it was the first for most of the participants.
It was a good experience to be immersed in
Esperanto culture day and night for two solid
days. However we deemed it important to give
the beginners some outlet to use English for some
meals and sessions. One of the sessions was
"Beginner's choice". Another session was divided
into two tracks in separate rooms, so that the
beginners and advanced speakers could have
separate conversation circles.
The first session Friday evening got off to a
good Esperanto-only start with greetings,
introductions, and a game of "Kiel vi sentas vin
hodiaŭ?" Anita purchased a supply of these
postcards at the ELNA Congress in Sacramento
especially for this exercise. At first we just asked
each other the question, going around the room in
turn. The other person could pick from any of
the answers. Beginners could use a single word
or a complete sentence according to skill, but the
answer was 100% Esperanto. Then we asked
each other at random by name. This extension of
the game insured that everybody knew
everybody else's name.
The hosts, Joe and Anna Burba, had the
house prepared with Esperanto labels on most
objects that might be referred to. There were
many, many sticky notes adorning most objects
in their house, including furniture, cabinets,
bathroom items, pictures, doors, etc. There were
many dictionaries available which received heavy
use.
The course elevated the Esperanto level of
the participants, and helped to prepare some of
us for the UK in Brazil. We certainly recommend
this or similar activities to other local groups.

Our Commissioner for Wills and
Gifting, William R. Harmon, will be
happy to work with you, in conjunc-
tion with professionals in the field
of testaments, to arrange the de-
tails to your satisfaction and in com-
plete confidence. If you have al-

keeps such information in very
strict confidence.
To make it easier for people to
join the Leadership Circle, begin-
ning with this campaign we accept
periodic payments by credit card, so
you can stretch the payments out
over several months or even the
whole year. We do ask that the
minimum payment be $20 so as to
not lose too much of it in bank costs,
but within that limit, you can sched-
ule your payments however you like
within the year of membership.
Another way to help ELNA is to
help expand our membership base.
Encouraging others in your group or
class to join ELNA (at any level) can
contribute much to our strength.
Members who join at the Friendship
Doubler level of the Leadership
Circle will receive a gift member-
ship in addition to their own. They
will be able to give this gift mem-
bership to anyone they wish, and we
hope that the gift will lead to new
members who will remain active in
Esperanto, and, of course, will renew
their memberships in ELNA in fol-
lowing years.
In this world of ever more inter-
ethnic contact, Esperanto is needed
more than ever before. And for
those of us who use Esperanto, the
coordinated Esperanto movement,
whose US representative is ELNA,
is at the heart of an important ele-
ment in our lives and our connec-
tions to the world. Thank you all for
your continued support of Esperanto
and the Esperanto League for North
America.

Esperanto USA havas nur 12

estis jam 6.5 paĝoj en la angla,
kaj nur 5.5 en la esperanta. Kaj
vi volas pliigi la anglajn pagqjn?
Ni jam tro krokodilas. Almenaŭ,
tio estas mia opinio.

Kiam mi ricevas Litovan

kaj la Ondo de Esperanto-n, mi
scias ke mi trovos ĉiun
artikolon en la Zamenhofa

tiuj revuoj estas por alilandanoj
kiuj ne scipovas la rusan,
portugalan aŭ litovan? Ne, ili
estas unue por la membroj de
siaj grupoj, tiuj membroj volas

Do, mi pensas ke nia
esperanto USA neniam enhavos
tro da artikoloj skribitaj en Es-

Ankaŭ mi demandas min, kial

In our opinion Esperanto USA
should remain a vehicle to pro-
mote, diffuse and extol the
merits and benefits of the in-
ternational language, and use
English sparingly, because it's
the language of this land.
Learning other languages
should be encouraged but we
should not fall into the "bilin-
gualism trap". If you cater to
one group, you must then fol-
low suit to the next ... AD IN-

Beetham, David, & Boyle, Kevin;
Kio estas demokratio? Rotterdam:
UEA, 2000. 210x145. 143p. Khan
desegnaĵoj de Plantn. Ĉe ELNA:
Kodo KIO003, prezo $11.40.
Kio estas demokratio? estas la
unua demando el ok-dek kiujn ĉi
tin abocolibro faras, kaj respondas.
La demandoj, kompreneble, ne nur
respondas al ĉi tin enkonduka
demando, sed gvidas la leganton tra
sistema pensado pri la fondoj,
strakturoj, neproj kaj problemoj de
demokratio. Taŭgas diri, ke ĉiu
demokratia civitano konu la
informon, kiun prezentis Beetham
kaj Boyle. EC longatempa civitano de
demokratia lando kiel Usono povas
rajtas egale partopreni sian
regadon. Hi eĉ eksplikas, kiel ĉi tiu
rajto neprigas egalan aliron al
publika servo (kaj aliron al publikaj
servistoj.) Hi montras, ke la kvar
fundamentaj principoj de demo-
kratio estas: Malferma regado
respondeca antaŭ la popolo; liberaj
kaj justaj balotadoj; civilaj kaj
politikaj rajtoj; kaj demokratia
socio.
ellasas iun ajn gravan ideon
bezonatan por kompleta baza kono
de demokratia funkciado. Kio
surprizas estas tio, ke ill ne ellasas
iun ajn, tamen ne farante la libron
enua, longa aŭ malfacila. Hi vigligas
la tekston enmetante amuzajn
karikaturajn bildojn kiuj ilustras
iliajn ideojn, kaj ekzemplojn por
montri kiel veraj landoj praktikas
demokratiajn principojn.
Iom el la temoj traktitaj estas:
Rolo de partioj politikaj, rolo de
liberaj arnaskomunikiloj (kaj kial ill
devas esti sendependaj), graveco de
la principo de la leĝoŝato, apartigo
de povoj, sendependenco de la
juĝistaro, la rilato inter liber-
merkata ekonomio kaj demokratio,
kaj civila malobeo. B&B ankaŭ
diskutas la malmulton da virinoj en
publiko, la influon de riĉeco kaj de
regionaj interesoj, politikan
koruptecon, militistajn ŝtatren-
versojn, kiel malriĉa socio
malhelpas demokration, kaj
maldemokration de internaciaj
institucioj.
Kion la usona studento ofte ne
ricevis en la civitisma kurso, estas
tio, ke la usona sistemo de
demokratio ne estas la sola ebla.
Beetham kaj Boyle ne parolis de
sola unuavica vidpunkto. Hi
priskribas malsamajn balotajn
sistemojn, kun iliaj avantaĝoj kaj
malavantaĝoj; kaj diversajn
sistemojn por apartigo de povoj,
ankau kun iliaj avantaĝoj kaj
malavantaĝoj. Hi prezentas
diversajn rimedojn por kreskigi la
nombron da virinoj en la regado,
rimedojn por garantii la
sendependencon de la juĝistaro kaj
de la arnaskomunikiloj, kaj
diversajn specojn de parlamentaj
ĉambroj.
Ĉi tiu libro estas bona komenc-
punkto por iu ajn kiu volas studi
teorion de demokratio, aŭ kiu volas
esti bona civitano de demokratia
socio. La verkistoj bonege provizis
la fundamenton kiun oni bezonas
por prave pensi pri demokratio.
Unu plendo: La fizika libro ne
estas bonfarita. Paĝoj malgluiĝis
antaŭ ol mi finis legi la tuton.

USEJ Angulo
We in USEJ figure that most young
American Esperanto-speakers are on-
line, and probably using some kind of
chat or messaging service. That's why
USEJ has most of its discussions on-
line in our electronic mailing list.
Some of us have even found each
other's instant messenger addresses
and chat occasionally with services like
AIM, ICQ, or other messengers. We
would like to bring the rest of you to-
gether so that we can all get to know
each other and practice Esperanto. So
we're asking all you young 'net addicts
to tell us which systems you use and
what your "screen names" are. Once we
know which systems you are using, we
can also try to arrange weekly online
chats. Remember the fun chats that
Amanda Higley arranged between
Christmas and New Years back in
2000? We'd like to bring those back,
and make them more regular. So let us
know what chat tools you use.
To keep in touch with USEJ, join
our discussion mailing list. Info about
joining the list is on the USEJ website,
, or send us an
Sj|instant message!

Back to School!
Many of you are returning to school,
maybe even starting at a new school or
university. While you're getting used
to homework again after a long sum-
mer, don't forget to see if your school
has an Esperanto club. If not, why not
start one? There might even be other
kids who are interested in Esperanto,
but you just don't know it. For college
students, a simple thing to do is to
photocopy posters that say "Want to
learn Esperanto?! Me too! Contact me!"
and put them up on bulletin boards all
over campus. See who contacts you.
If you include a short description of
what Esperanto is and the URLS of
some web pages, you might also attract
people who didn't know about Espe-
' ranto before reading your poster. Once
you find other people who want to learn,
get together and help each other prac-
tice. We can help you find books and
web pages to learn from, or recommend
games and things to do, just ask us!
If you've already tried starting a
club, or if there's already an Esperanto
club at your school, let us know. We'd
like to share our experiences and
maybe even create a website or hand-
book to record what has worked and
what hasn't.
Don't Just Sit There!
If you want to know about upcom-
ing Esperanto youth events, check out
USEJ's website. We have a calendar
of regional, national, and international
Esperanto events that we update regu-
larly. One upcoming event that we'd
particularly like to mention is the In-
ternational Esperanto Weekend held in
Vermont on Columbus Day weekend (in
October). The regional event is at-
tended by Esperanto speakers from
Ontario, Quebec, New England, and
New York, and a large number of the
participants are young people. As many
as any of the youth weekends that we've
organized. So we'd like to make it an
honorary JES and encourage any young
Esperantists who can make it to come
to Okemo! More information, includ-
ing pictures from last year, is on the
USEJ website —just click on "Events".
(See also the article in the last issue
of Esperanto USA. - Ed.)
We're also tossing around the idea
of organizing another camping event.
In the past, USEJ has held NAJT, the
North American Youth Camp-out (Nord-
Amerika Junulara Tendaro), attended
by US and Canadian Esperantists. We
haven't had one in many years, so it
might be fun to try again. Ben Stevens
offered to arrange something in his
area, if others think it's worth visiting.
He can arrange something in the camp-
grounds in Tioga County at the "Grand
Canyon of Pennsylvania". Lots of infor-
mation about the area and the camp-
grounds is available on the web. Con-
tact Ben for more information at
and include
"NAJT" in the subject line.
Voĵaĝante per la Pasporta Servo
(Chuck Smith)
Dum la pasinta monato, mi uzis
Pasportan Servon (PS) en Anglio,
Francio kaj Germanio. Estis interese,
unu urbo. Se nur estas unu, kion oni
faru kiam oni volas iri tien, sed la
gastiganto estas for? Mi esperas ke
estontece homoj pensos pri vojaĝado
al Usono kaj ili tuj pensos, "Ho, mi
povos viziti Usonon Esperante!"
Se vi antaŭe konsideris aliĝi al la
PS 2003, simple aliĝu nun! Estas
bonega maniero uzi Esperanton,
renkonti interesulojn, kaj montri al viaj
amikoj ke Esperanto vere funkcias kaj
utilas.
Editor's note
Recently there has been some dis-
cussion on the esper-rus mailing list
of organizing a Rusian-style Esperanto
campout, duration probably a week or
more, in the United States under the
tutelage of one or more visiting Rus-
sian "veterans" of such campouts in the
old Soviet Union and modern Russia.
How many here might be interested in
such a campout?
There has also been some talk on
the same list of going to greater effort
to invite foreigners (including Ameri-
cans) to such (summer) campouts in
Russia itself. How many USEJ mem-
bers might have the wherewithal and
interest in participating? I should add
that there have been some reservations
about the ability of foreigners (Ameri-
cans in particular) to tolerate certain
of the rustic features of such campouts;
mosquitoes and primitive toilet facili-
ties were mentioned in particular. How
many USEJ members would be put off
by such matters?

-ESPERANTISTO J ESTAS UNIKA SPECO DE KOMUNUMO"
de Kep Enderby, Antaŭa Prezidanto de U.E.A.
#
Speak English
"Mi unue esprimis tiun
ĉi opinion dum ekskurso
organizita de Lusi en
Amazonio antaŭ la lasta
UK. Trails min tiam la
demando pro la multetna
konsisto de la ekskursanoj.
Kio allogis ilin tiel
kuniĝi? Klare ili ĉiuj sufiĉe
interesigis pri io, ke ili
persvadis sin lerni Esper-
anton, sed kio? Cu estis la
nobla movada aspekto de
Esperanto, aŭ ĉu estis io pli
fundamenta ol tio?
Mi decidis ke kvankam
la movada aspekto kontri-
buis ion, plej grandan
kontribuon fans la konscio
T » ke scipovi Esperanton helpis
La angla ne povas - pliriĉigi majn individuajn
komiinumigi llinl vivojn. Konstati tion, tamen,
veraj komunumoj.
Lau PW, 'komunumo' havas kelkajn signifojn, inter kiuj
punktoj'. Klariĝas, ke Esperantistoj do ne estas sekto.
Do mi kontentigas min
sole lingva, internacia, diaspora komunumo.
Do - vojaĝu kaj kongresu kun ni
en Esperanta komunumo venontjare!
