Kiel mi Esperantistiĝis (kaj kion mi lernis ...)

Mi estis ĉiam amatora lingvisto.
Ĉe la mezlernejo mi studis la germanan
lingvon. Mia lingva instruistino diris,
ke ĉio sciebla ne estas en unu lingvo
sciebla. Do, ĉe la universitato mi
plustudis la germanan, dum sole, mi
lernis iomete la rusan kaj la ĉinan
lingvojn. Post multaj jaroj, kiam mi
restudis universitate, mi lernis la
grekan lingvon kaj iome la hebrean.
(Unue, mi studis komputilan sciencon
ĉe la universitato, kaj due, mi studis
teologion.) Multfoje, kiel junulo, mi
provis krei mian propran sekretan
lingvon, sed ili ne funkciis car mi havis
neniun kun kiu mi povis kunparoli.
En la jaro 1999, mi decidis esplori
la lingvon Esperanto, pri kiu mi sciis
preskaŭ nenion kaj aŭdis nur iomete.
(Mi sciis ke Esperanto ekzistas car mi
legadis librojn pri multaj lingvoj.) Mi
trovis la 10-lecionan kurson en la reto.
Post la unua leciono mi amegas la
lingvon kaj ĝian simplecon kaj
fortecon. Mi studis la tutan kursaron
dum unu semajno. Tuj poste mi
mendis la libron Teach Yourself Espe-
ranto kun la sonbendoj de
Amazon.com. Ĝi venis post ne multaj
tagoj kaj mi komencis legi gin.
Nun mi decidis provi mian
lingvokapablon en la reto. Mi trovis
la novaĵgrupon soc . culture
.esperanto kaj sendis kelkajn
komencajn mesaĝojn. Iuj personoj tie
tuj atakis miajn erarojn, ne por helpi,
sed nur por ataki. Mi tuj decidis ke mi
ne volas uzi la lingvon de tiaj
malĝentilegaj homoj. Mi fermis la
librojn kaj haltigis miajn studojn. Tiun
aŭtunon, mi iris al Nikaragvo, do mi
studis la hispanan lingvon iome.
En la somero de jaro 2001, mi
revidis la libron Teach Yourself ce la
libroŝranko kaj volis legi ĝin denove.
Mi faris tion sed mi ne uzis la reton
por konversacii. Mi vizitis la retpaĝon
de ELNA por serĉi lokajn Esperanto-
parolantojn. Mi trovis homon kiu loĝas
ne for de mi, kaj kun li mi malkovris
tutan komunumon de Esperanto-
parolantoj. Nun por mi estas Esperanto
bona sperto.
Kvankam mi ne kreis
Esperanton, ĝi estas por mi sonĝo kiu
nun vivas. Mi ĉiam volis simplan
komunikan metodon por ĉiuj.
Esperanto estas tia metodo. Ĝi estas
facile lernebla kaj forte uzebla. Mi
kredas ke se ĉiu lernos iom, tiam la
mondo pliboniĝos.
Vi trovos kelkajn malĝentilajn
personojn en Esperantujo, sed ili ne
estas la kutimuloj. Ĉiu kulturo havas
siajn malbelajn aferojn, sed veraj
Esperantistoj estas amikaj kaj volas
helpi la novajn esperantistojn. Nun mi
estas fiera esti esperantisto kaj ano de
la mondsocio de Esperanto-parolantoj.

newspaper article about Esperanto and
ELNA.
My thanks to long-standing Board
members Derek Roff and Grant Goodall,
who have decided not to run for reelec-
tion. They have both been friends to me
as well as strong supporters of ELNA for
many years. I expect to see them stay-
ing active.
Also, our thanks to Dr. Ralph Lewin and to
Liz Raible, who both resigned from the Board in
June. Dr. Lewin decided that he was too over-
taxed to handle Board responsibilities properly,
and Liz is currently completely occupied with her
studies. We appreciate their work and wish them
all the best.
It's been six long years.
This is my 30th column in EoUSA.
The first one was two jobs ago. One
area-code change ago. Two e-mail ad-
dress changes ago.
ELNA has seen successes and fail-
ures during those years. It's been one
of the most frustrating experiences of my
life ■— partly because I believe so strongly
in the potential of Esperanto, and in the
need for a strong ELNA to turn that po-
tential into reality. Some of the suc-

or worked on:

"Five Most Wanted." Novjorka Prismo's
100th issue. September 11th. And I've
sent out 43 "Ege BonePs to Esperan-
tists who have, in one way or another,
done something Really Good for our
Movement. (Including a number of past
and current Board Members and now
two Ege Bone!s to our CO Director.)
Failures: We still don't have active
committees for local groups or for
fundraising. Our publicity efforts are
much better than before, but still no-
where near where they should be. I've
been unable to fix our long-standing fi-
nancial problems. And every task in the
Five Most Wanted is (since these have-,
not been filled) a failure, in a sense.
In my first column, I wrote: "As an
activist in the Movement for over fifteen
years, I have often been asked, Why
hasn't Esperanto succeeded yet?' The
answer is not that Esperanto is some-
how lacking. The answer is that Espe-
ranto organizations are lacking. In par-
ticular, ELNA lacks human and finan-
cial resources; local groups lack re-
sources and expertise; and because of

Kien ELNA Post la 50a Jaro?

La jubilea kvindeka jaro de ELNA
estas taŭga okazo rerigardi la
organizaĵon, ĝiajn historion, nunan
staton, kaj prognozojn por la oso. Kaj,
ne surprize, ĝuste tion ni faras.
La jubilea 50-a ELNA-kongreso
estis ia kulmino de tiu sintakso,
kvankam ne la fino. Okaze de la
kongreso ELNA eldonis en angla lingvo
libron pri la historio de ELNA
kompilitan de William R. Harmon: A
History of the Esperanto League for
North America, Inc. Tiu 64-paĝa libro
estas tre valora referenclibro pri ELNA
kaj la usona Esperanto-movado de la
lasta jarcentduono. Ciufoje kiam mi
malfermas gin, mi trovas ion interesan
kiu tiras mian atenton, kaj malfaciligas
forlason de la libro. La libron rice vis
jam ĉiu kongresano, kaj oni povas aĉeti
ĝin en la libroservo.
Ni rigardas ankau la nunan staton
de ELNA. Pri la agado de la lasta jaro
oni povas legi en la jarraportoj de
komisiitoj, komisionoj, komitatoj, ktp.
Tiujn jarraportojn ni kolektis kaj
eldonis okaze de la kongreso, kaj
kongresanoj jam ricevis ilin surpapere.
Ciu membro de ELNA rajtas ricevi ilin
senpage, kaj mi kuraĝigas ĉiujn traiegi
ilin. Hi donas bonan bildon de la
agadoj, kaj mankoj de agadqj, de nia
movado. Hi troveblas en la interreto
ĉe la ttt-ejo . Ĝi estas ŝlosita
a! la publiko, sed ELNA-membroj rajtas
libere rigardi kaj ŝuti gin. Por atingi
gin, uzu la identecon membro kaj la
ŝlosilvorton elnagado.
Se vi preferas ricevi la
jarraportaron sur papero per
paperpoŝto, bv. peti tion al la Centra
Oficejo. Ĝi estas senpaga al membroj
de ELNA.
Tre grava parto de la rigardo al la
nuna stato de ELNA temas pri la
financa stato. Dum preskaŭ du jaroj
ni ne havis aktualan bildon de la
financoj de ELNA, pro manko de
funkcianta kasisto, kaj pro la tempo
necesa por la nova kasisto ekkompreni
kaj ordigi la malordon lasitan pro tio.
Mi ne povas troigi la dankojn al nia
nuna kasisto, William Harris, kiu
penegis ordigi la kontojn kaj
librotenadon de ELNA, kaj finfine faris
bone uzeblajn raportojn per kiuj la
estraro (kaj la membroj) povas
kompreni la veran financan staton.
Kia estas la financa stato de ELNA?
Nu, ĝi ne estas nun katastrofa, sed
ELNA de jardeko sekvas vojon evidente
kondukantan al katastrofo, kaj se ni
daŭrigus same, la katastrofo venos tre
baldaŭ. Temas pri vera katastrofo, kiu

kuraĝigan rezulton: la membronombro
fine de junio en 2002 estas pli ol la
lastjara 694 je la fino de junio, 2001.
Tio promesas rompi la konstantan
malpliiĝon de membronombro kiun
travivis ELNA dum la lasta jardeko. Tio
certe estas bona kaj kuraĝiga indiko,
sed ankoraŭ longe for de solvo al la
financa paneo. EC duobligo de la
membronombro ne sufiĉus por plene
solvi la financan krizon. Ni bezonas
pliajn membrojn, sed ni bezonas ankaŭ
pli ol tio: ni bezonas mondonacojn.
ELNA simple ne povas ekzisti kiel
konstantserva organizajo sen
mondonacoj.
Ni en la oficejo trovas manierojn
ŝpari monon laŭeble, sec] tio temas pri
relative malgrandaj partoj de la buĝeto.
Ĝi certe helpas — neniu gajnas per
malŝparo. Tamen, ne estis multa
malŝparo de mono, kaj ne eblas ŝpari
multe sen forigo de servoj. La plej
granda unuopa elspezo estas la salajroj
de la du oficistoj, direktoro kaj
vicdirektoro de la oficejo. La plej simpla
maniero ekvilibrigi la buĝeton estus
forigi unu oficiston, car proksimume
tiom estas la manko de enspezo en unu
jaro. Sed, estas simpla fakto ke unu
homo ne povas fari tion kiun nun faras
du homoj sin pene dediĉantaj al la
laboro, ofte uzante multe pli ol la
normala 40-hora semajno. Tiu "solvo"
certe kondukus al drasta malpliigo de
la servoj, kaj malkresko de la Espe-
ranto-movado en Usono.
Oni diskutis la eblon simple
malpliigi la salajrojn. Tamen, la nunaj
salajroj de la oficistoj, kvankam sufiĉe
por modeste vivteni unuopulon, estas
malpli ol duono de la salajroj kiujn ni
povus ricevi se ni laborus en komerca
firmao. Tiusence, ni dungitoj jam
"donacas" duonon de nia unta salajro
por la privilegio labor! por ELNA. La
estraro decidis lasi la salajrojn samaj
kiel lastjare.
Sed, se ni ne sukcesas grande pliigi
la enspezojn, necesos duonigi la
stabon. La estraro en Sakramento (kaj
per retpoŝta diskutado antaŭ la
kongreso) diskutis tiun eblon: ĉu ni
devas tuj maldungi unu oficiston? Fine
la estraro decidis prokrasti tian
drastan paŝon ĝis febraaro de 2003.
Oni faris buĝeton kiu inkluzivas ambaŭ
oficistojn ĝis tiu monato (la buĝeto
estas por fiska jaro, de aprilo 1 ĝis
marto 31), kun la jena kondiĉo; Se la
financa stato ne pliboniĝas ĝis tiam,
oni maldungos oficiston, sed se estas
sufiĉa pliboniĝo de la enspezoj, oni
daurigos la nunan funkciadon de la
oficejo plu, ĝis la fino de la fiska jaro,
kiam necesos decidi pri nova buĝeto.
Do, la krizo estas prokrastita, por
doni al ni — tio estas, al ELNA, ĉiuj el
ni — iom da tempo ekagi por solvi la
problemon.
Oficistoj kaj estraranoj penos trovi
solvojn, kaj ill ĉiuj mem donacos
monon al ELNA. Sed, por eliri el nia*
krizo, necesos simila penado de la
membroj. La pluekzisto de ELNA kiel
ni konas ĝin dependas je la kunagado
esperanto USA 3/2002
de ni ĉiuj. Kiel helpi? Jen kelkaj
sugestoj, kiuj certe ne konsistigas
kompletan liston.
• Donaci monon al la ĝenerala
■kaso de ELNA, (por eliri el la nuna
^krizo), aŭ al la Capital Endowment
Fund (por pli daŭra solvo de la
problemo).
• Aranĝi testamenton, por
heredigi ion al ELNA. Se oni mortas
sen testamento, la ŝtato kutime prenas
la plimulton el la heredaĵo, do nepre
starigu testamenton. Se vi interesiĝas
pri tio, kontaktu s-ron William
Harmon, kiu povas diskrete konsili vin
pri testamentoj, kaj helpi aranĝi gin,
kun asisto de tiaj fakuloj kun kiuj li
kunlaboras.
• Realiĝi al ELNA en unu el la
subtenaj kategorioj kun kotizo pli alta
ol tiu de simpla individua membro.
Detaloj pri tio aperos kun la nova aliĝilo
por 2003 post la somero.
• Se vi laboras ĉe firmao kiu

"I myself like to go down Friday night, but the event doesn't officially
start till around mid-day that Saturday and doesn't get into full swing till
late afternoon or early evening. We pack a lot into a few days - including
beginner and intermediate classes, various workshops and lectures on top-
ics ranging from karate to computers to travel to I don't know what all.
There's a 'kultura vespero' (Esperanto for 'open mike night') where a va-
riety of talented people present music or poetry, and a few less talented
people get in on the act too. Everybody always has a lot of fun. There's
also the komuna vespermanĝo (Esperanto for 'pot luck') which is also
quite enjoyable. The facility is very nice and in a very nice location (see.
www. okemo. com). There are hotels nearby, or you could rent a condo'
right on site and split it with someone. They're very nice and not too
expensive - less than a hotel - when you share them. (Information on
finding a room-mate is on the first web page above; don't write to
www. okemo. com about it unless you want a whole big place to your-
self. Most people buy food at a local grocery store and cook in kitchens,
but there are restaurants nearby too."
