"Zamenhof once wrote that Espe-
ranto is to ethnic language as a canal is
to a river. You don't have to make a ca-
nal winding and irregular to imitate a
river. A beautiful canal can be straight
and simple. Hundreds have tried to cre-
ate a universal language, including some
linguists. But only Esperanto has taken
hold to become a living, working lan-
guage with a worldwide community of
speakers."

Post kelkjara foresto, estas iom interese
denove redakti (eĉ se nur provizore) la
bultenon de ELNA. Mi esperas, ke vi trovos
ĝin daŭre interesa.
Vi eble rimarkos kelkajn ŝanĝojn en la
nuna numero. Ĉefa inter ili estas la listo
"Leteru".
demembroj.
Mi ankaŭ enŝovas artikolon, kiun mi
longtempe volas skribi, pri la sufrksoj -IG-
kaj -IĜ-. Espereble ni povos estontece
aperigi aliajn artikolojn pri la lingvo mem,
kiuj helpos kaj al novaj esperantistoj kaj al
progresantoj (kaj, kelkfoje, eĉ al "flue
parolantoj" - eble surprizus vin scii, kiom
okazontaj regionaj konferencoj kiel Okemo
kaj NOREK.
diversaj aferoj. Mi deziras, ke ankaŭ tio
fariĝu denove konstanta rubriko.
Mi menciu ankaŭ, ke mi nun pli-malpli
respondecas pri la libroservo de ELNA. En
ĉi tiu numero vi trovos tutan paĝon da novaj
libroj kiuj estas haveblaj ĉe la libroservo;
preta, kaj restas tuta stako da novaj libroj
ankoraŭ ne enpaĝigitaj. Do, kaptu la okazon
iom aĉeti; se vi havas kreditkarton, vi povas
tion fari ankaŭ pere de .
Se vi havas proponojn pri artikoloj /
informoj kiujn vi volas vidi, aŭ pri libroj
kiujn vi volas aĉeti, ne hezitu kontakti min
pri tio. Mi estas atingebla aŭ ĉe la ELNA

Saluton ĉiuj,
Our annual elections are coming up soon.
Please take a moment to visit our website,
, and checkout
the quarterly reports. This is the best way to see
who is contributing to our organization, at least
for current Board members. If you don't have
access to the Web, please ask a friend to help
you. We've accumulated quite a lot of info, and
some of it is quite interesting!
Special thanks to Philip Dorcas, the head of
the Nominating Committee for this year's elec-
tions. Thanks also to Anna Bennett, Don Harlow,
Fred Meyer, and Alex Shlafer, the other mem-
bers of the committee. If you don't like the can-
didates, you have only yourself to blame for not
nominating someone better (or running your-
self!). But you will like them.
This column seems to be mostly Internet-
related... You can now find the "Poster Series," a
set of posters for advertising Esperanto, on our
website. These are one-page PDF files that you
can print and use. Some are good for any audi-
ence (such as the "French verbs versus Esperanto
verbs"), some for specific audiences (such as a
couple aimed for science fiction fans). Thanks to
Jay Fishman for putting these on the website so
quickly.
Another Jay item: Jay complained that
ELNA has not told our members about impor-
tant information in a timely fashion. Since Espe-
ranto USA appears only every two months, it's
difficult to tell you about breaking news. So we
have set up a new mailing list, . It will have
only announcements (no discussions), so you will
not receive a flood of messages from it. This re-
places the old "ELNA Elektronika Bulteno,"
which has not been used in some years and which
was harder to keep up to date. I encourage every-
one to sign up for this mailing list. To do so, just
e-mail any message to (the mes-
sage and subject can be empty). You will get a
verification message; reply to it to finish signing
up. You can also visit ,
search on "elna-anoncoj" and follow the instruc-
tions. You'll be able to unsubscribe at any time.
If you know Esperantists who do not have
access to e-mail or the Web, please join this list
and tell them about announcements. I recommend
that every local group assign a person to monitor
the list and get the word out when we do have
announcements. If you don't have e-mail or Web
access, check your local library. Many of them
have public-access PCs that you can use.
Also remember that ELNA members can
discuss anything through the mailing list
(this
has an underscore instead of a dash). This list
gets more messages; any member of the list can
post to it.
I am sending an "Ege Bone!" to Dale
Gulledge. Dale wrote an excellent article "Free
Software is about Freedom, not Software," com-
paring Esperanto to the open software movement.
You can see it at .
And our condolences to Anna Bennett,
whose mother recently passed away. As you can
see, Anna has helped (and is still helping) ELNA
in many ways, and we all appreciate her assis-
tance.
Last, after a year of grief at my old ISP, I'm
moving my e-mail address. The new one is
dwolf f Spanix. com. Let me know if you have
any trouble reaching me there.

THE MOST IMPORTANT SUFFIXES
I am often impressed by the fact that almost
every Esperanto textbook - at least for English
speakers - starts out describing the word-forma-
tion system with the prefix MAL- and the suffix
-IN-. This can lead to occasional problems with
students of the language - some people are upset
by the -IN- suffix because it puts women in an
inferior position (though one might argue that it,
in fact, puts them in a superior position), while
others complain that MAL- really should mean
"bad" and not "opposite". On the other hand,
from the point of view of facility of use they are
two of the easiest to explain. MAL- can be used
with any word that has an antonym, and just about
everybody can figure out the difference between
male and female (though, I must confess, it took
me a few years ...). So it's really no wonder that
most expositions of the language start out with
these two, other complaints notwithstanding.
Other affixes are a bit less easy to under-
stand, and this is particularly true of the two that
I consider the most important in the language.
These are -IG- and -IG-.
To understand how these work, let's go back
to the most basic aspects of using affixes in Es-
peranto word-creation. Most, perhaps all, Espe-
ranto roots (not words) fall into three basic cat-
egories: object roots, attribute roots and action
roots. For reasons of simplicity, the Academy of
Esperanto generally refers to these as noun roots,
adjective roots and verb roots, respectively; but
this is a bit misleading, since any root can be
used as a noun, an adjective or a verb. Neverthe-
less, for the sake of consistency I'll use these
terms.
Some affixes don't care what type of root
they attach to; MAL-, -EG- and -ET- (which also
usually appear fairly early in the textbooks) are
the best examples I can think of. On the other
hand, -IN- generally wants to attach to a noun
root; it would make little sense to associate it with
an attribute or an action, since attributes and ac-
tions generally are not male or female. Most af-
fixes, like -IN-, want to be attached to a certain
type of root. This is usually not a problem; most
affixes are strong enough to twist the root to
which they are attached to the meaning they want.
For instance, we know that ŝton' is a noun root;
the suffix -EC- wants to be attached to an adjec-
tive root; so when you attach it to ŝton', you es-
sentially change the meaning from the name of
an object (a stone) to the attribute most closely
associated with that type of object (stony), and
the result is ŝtoneco (stoniness).
-IG- and -IG- both want to start out with an
adjective root, and when they are attached to such
a root, their meaning is evident. Both of them
show a change of state into the state described
by the root. -IG- just indicates that the state of
the verb's subject has changed: pur a = clean, la
domo puriĝas = the house becomes clean; ruĝa
= red, miaj vangoj ruĝiĝis = my cheeks turned
red, I blushed. -IG- however shows that the verb's
subject has caused something else to change
state: ŝipurigas la domon = she causes the house
to become clean, she cleans the house; liafrapo
ruĝigis mian vangon = his slap turned my cheek
red.
So far, so good. The same description is
equally applicable to noun roots, except that the
-IĜ- or -IG-, like -EC- in the above example,
twists the noun root into an adjective meaning
when it's attached to it. Ŝtono = stone, ŝtona =
stony: la dinosaŭro dum jarmilionoj ŝtoniĝis =
the dinosaur became stony (turned to stone, be-
came petrified) over millions of years; la efiko
fects turned the dinosaur stony (turned it to stone,
petrified it).
We encounter, however, a problem when we
try to add -IG- and -IĜ- to a verb root. Here, we
deviate from logic. It is quite possible to add one
of these suffixes to a verb root, thus twisting the
meaning of the root, but the result is not what we
expect when we use the suffixes. For instance,
consider the expression sida loko (a place for sit-
ting). We ought to be able to say la loko sidiĝis
(the place became suitable for sitting). But that's
not what sidiĝis means, is it. Why not?
Sida is an adjective and describes a state, in
the sense that adjectives describe states. But it's
a very rare adjective, a very unused one. It is
possible that one could go through his or her
entire life without using it. When it comes to verb
roots, the most common related adjectives de-
scribing states are the participles. So, one might
think, logic notwithstanding, why waste a good
suffix?
Obviously, you can apply one of these suf-
fixes to a participle. La vim sidantiĝis — the man
became sitting, the man sat down; la virino
sidantigis lin = the woman caused him to be sit-
ting, the woman sat him down. This is a logical
and perfectly legitimate usage, but it's not too
common. Presumably the logic of non-logic is:
nobody but nobody is ever going to use sidiĝis
in the sense of iĝis sida; why not simply use it
for iĝis sidanta and get rid of that extra syllable?
So, today, people say: la viro sidiĝis for la viro
sidantigis and la virino sidigis lin for la virino
sidantigis lin. And that way the suffixes are com-
monly used with verb roots, where if they were
used with strict logic, they would simply not be
used very much, if at all.
(Side note: the astute student of Esperanto
will ask, "What's the difference, then, between
sidiĝi and eksidi, the latter using EK- which is a
prefix that shows the beginning of an action?"
The answer: for most practical purposes, none at
all. If you become a great author in Esperanto,
you will probably find good reasons for select-
ing sidiĝi in one place and eksidi in another, if
only to add a bit of variation to your vocabulary;
but in ordinary conversation, feel free to use
whichever one you personally prefer.)
Now another complication arises. Esperanto
verbs generally fall into two categories: those
which show something that the subject is doing
that affects only it; and those which show some-
thing that the subject is doing that affects some-
one or something else. For conciseness, we can
refer to these as transitive and intransitive verbs
respectively. Note that transitivity and
intransitivity are not grammatical qualities of the
verbs themselves, but simply characteristics of
their meanings.
An intransitive verb by its nature can't have
a passive participle; so when you add -IG- or -
IG- to an intransitive verb, you're always assum-
ing an -ant- or an -int- being added, not an -at-
or an -it- (sidiĝi means sidantiĝi, but it can't mean
sidatiĝi, since sidat- does not exist). But a tran-
sitive verb has both sorts of participles. The situ-
ation is equally simple when you add -IĜ- to a
transitive verb: there is a tacit addition of an -at-
or an -it- to the verb. Ŝi kisiĝis — she was (be-
came) kissed = ŝi kisatiĝis.
The final problem that we'll discuss arises
when you add -IG- to a transitive verb. Consider
the phrase (which Zamenhof also considered):
Li sciigis Hon al mi. This means (with the addi-
tion of an -at-) li sciATigis tion al mi (he made
that known to me). But couldn't you equally well
say li sciigis min pri tio (li sciANTigis min pri
tio, he made me know[ing] about that)? Or if not,
which form is correct? Zamenhof's answer (in
one of his lingvaj respondoj) was that it was not
necessary to split hairs so carefully, since the form
of the two objects (which you treated as direct
and which indirect) would resolve the problem;
you can say either one, and, if you wish, stick in
the participial suffixes to be more pedantically
accurate.
So, what we come down to are a few simple
rules describing -IG- and -IĜ- with verbs:
(1) When you add -IĜ- or -IG- to a verb
that doesn 't take a direct object, you're also tac-
itly adding an -ant- (or an -int-);
(2) When you add -IĜ- to a verb that does
take a direct object, you're also tacitly adding an
-at- (or an -it-);
(3) When you add -IG- to a verb that does
take a direct object, you are also tacitly adding
either one of these, and you can show which one
it is either by explicitly putting it into the word
or by letting the way you treat the resulting two
objects show what you mean.

leteron klarigantan siajn Esperanto-historion kaj
kialojn deziri labori por ELNA. Vidu la antaŭan
numeron de Esperanto USA por pliaj informoj,
aŭ kontaktu min ĉe aŭ

Dume, Don Harlow provizore plenumas
tiujn postenojn, do la oficeja funkciado daŭras
pli-malpli glate.
Practice Esperanto
by phone
ELNA has a new service available: a tele-
phone conference service, where up to 30 lines
at a time can join in conversation. This service
is free. The only cost is that of telephoning to
the conference server, which is in Florida.
To use the service, simply call (305) 503-
6682 and follow the directions to choose one of
a thousand available "chat rooms" by dialing a
three digit number. You will be connected to ev-
eryone else who chose that three digit number.
The number for Esperanto (chosen arbitrarily to
match ELNA's P.O. box number) is 129. If a few
people wish to carry on their own conversation
separate from the others, they can at any time go
to another "chat room" by dialing its three digit
number, which they can decide on the spot.
Every day from 19:00 to 19:30 Chicago time
volunteers will be on the phone ready to speak
with callers, so that participants will be assured
of finding someone there when they call. Besides
that, anyone can use the service at any time, even
for a simple three-way conversation between
friends.
Those who use the service often may wish
to buy low-priced long distance telephone ser-
vice. There are several such services that charge
less than three cents per minute for anywhere
within the 48 contiguous states. These services
can usually be found in the Internet. There is a
comparison at www.phonecards.com.
ELNA elections
are underway
The ballots for the election of five positions
on the Board of Directors have been sent out to
all members. Be sure to mark your ballots and
get them back to the Central Office before June
20th, 2002. Or you can bring them to ELNA's
50th anniversary conference in Sacramento and
personally hand them over to me, Joel Brozovsky,
on Friday June 21st. If you are a member of
ELNA and didn't receive a ballot, contact the
Central Office to request one.
The candidates for president are Lee Miller
and Alexander Shlafer. For vice president the
Kandidatiga Komitato found only one candidate:
Phil Dorcas. For the three other positions on the
Board of Directors there are five candidates: Don
Coleman, D. Gary Grady, Jacob Schwartz, Tim
Westover, and David Wolff. A big thank you to
the five members of the Kandidatiga Komitato.

Direktoro, CO.
Postal rates are |
still moving
Unfortunately, it is entirely unnecessary to
explain in which direction the postal rates are
moving, since they have always gone in the same
direction: upwards. We have a hard time keep-
ing up with the increases, and the fact that the
postal service sometimes doesn't publish details
of the new rates until weeks after they go into
effect doesn't make it any easier.
With the new catalog, which members and
Friends should have already received, the mini-
mum postage fees have been raised slightly, from
$1.75 to $1.80 for domestic surface mail, and
from $2.25 to $2.50 for foreign addresses, or
faster domestic delivery. See the inside front
cover of the 2002 catalog for details.
Unfortunately, after we sent the catalog to
the printers, the US Postal Service announced
another substantial rate increase, the second one
this year, which will probably go into effect in
July. Details have not yet been announced (other
than the basic letter cost going from 34 to 37
cents), but when they are, it may be necessary
for us to again raise the postage fees charged for
the book service. If so, it will be announced here
and incorporated into the web store.
Meanwhile, new publications keep coming
out, and we have a long list of books added to
ELNA's book service since the new catalog was
published. Take a look at New from the Book Ser-
vice on page 10. You are quite likely to find some-
thing to pique your interest. There are also some
new offerings in the catalog which have not ap-
peared here.

landon. La plimulto de usonanoj ne vojaĝas
eksterlanden dum siaj feritagoj. Fari tion
Do
usonanoj dum siaj feritagoj spertas interesajn
Komparu tion
kun aliaj landoj el kiuj multaj igas siajn
studantojn eklerni iun lingvon ekde la fruaj
lernejaj jaroj.

lingvojn. Vi trovos ke multaj eĉ pensus ke
Esperanto estus tre bona ideo post kiam vi
esperantigi ilin. Kiam mi eklernis
Esperanton, mi estis tre timema kiam mi volis
paroli pri ĝi kun miaj amikoj, familianoj, kaj
konatoj. Poste kiam mi iomete plikuraĝiĝis,
mi pro vis konvinki kelkaj n el ili, ke ili lernu
la lingvon. Tio estis granda malsukceso. Nun
tre bona. Ofte ili volas lerni almenaŭ kiel
diri "Saluton" aŭ "Mi amas vin."
Ne eblas ke mi sukcesos trovi multajn
usonanojn kiuj emus lerni Esperanton.
gepatra. Ni klopodu disdoni informon pri
Esperanto kaj ties boneco, eĉ al tiuj kiuj ne
esperantemas, kaj eĉ per la angla.

La Flambirdo: parto futuro, Tezuka Osamu.
Translated by Konisi Gaku. Toyonaka: Japana
EsperantaLibrokooperativo, 2001.295p. Kodo:
FLA003; prezo: $18.10
When I was growing up in the USA, the
first books that interested me enough to make
me want to learn to read were the comic books
that my older siblings were reading. Superman
was obviously an American creation, and I
naturally assumed that comics in general were
American. I wasn't alone in this thought. Books
that I found in the library about the history of
comics barely touched on caricatures from other
countries; the authors claimed that comics as we
know them were developed in the US, and that
they are produced and read mostly in the US.
That last information has been long out of
date. The quantity of comics published in Japan
in a single week far exceeds the annual
production in the US. About 40% of all literature
published in Japan is in the form of comics, called
in Japanese manga. Commuters of all ages on
trains throughout Japan are reading, mostly,
comics. There are comic magazines published
weekly by the millions, and books similarly
published in the millions. Here, comics have
barely edged out of the children's market into
some of the Baby-boomers who grew up with
comics (some would say, that they never grew
up...) and still like them. But they are still
frowned upon by the majority of adults, and by
most literary critics. Pity! The comics medium
has so much potential.
One great visionary who tapped into some
of that potential was Tezuka Osamu. Educated
to be a surgeon, he instead became perhaps the
greatest creator of comics the world has known.
The current and lasting boom in comics in Japan
is attributed largely to Tezuka, known as the
father of comics and animation in Japan.
Tezuka created many comics characters and
series, spanning a wide gamut of types and
situations. His artwork is clear, often detailed,
and humorous, even when the story is serious. I
have enjoyed "reading" many of his books in
Japanese, without understanding most of what
was written - his drawings are that good. And
now, we have the privilege of being able to read
one of his books and understand the words too!
La Flambirdo (literally The Flame Bird,
originally Hi no tori) is a theme that Tezuka
worked on from time to time throughout much
of his productive life. It is considered to be his
masterwork, although many of his works, if done
by others, could easily also qualify as
masterworks. The volume translated, the episode
Future, is the second of nine volumes featuring
the Flame Bird. It starts in the year 3404 with the
earth on its deathbed, but time can be somewhat
circular in the world of Tezuka. The title character, |
the Flame Bird, shows up only from time to time
throughout the very long time frame of this series,
but always has an important effect on the principal
characters of the segment.
The characters, while cartoony, can seem
quite real. The story certainly can be classified as
science fiction, and the author's education as a
scientist (medical doctor) shows through in the
relatively high credibility of the fictional science
portrayed. But what makes it a masterwork is the
surprisingly profound treatment of universal life
questions.
William Auld's poetry masterwork, La
infana raso, comments on the human race in a
provocative and thought-provoking way. This
book of Tezuka's, in my opinion, is no less
profound in its discussion of the human race. Even
though the story is very engrossing and keeps the
reader turning the pages the first time through,
one is left with much to think about after finishing
the book. A second more thoughtful reading is
very worthwhile.
The translator, Konisi Gaku, a member of
the Academy of Esperanto, is perhaps the world's
leading translator from Japanese into Esperanto
today. He is a physics professor who, as a child,
wanted to become a comics artist like Tezuka. He
was even tutored for a while by his idol Tezuka.
This is a comic book that is not intended for
children, although some children would certainly
enjoy it too. I would recommend this book even
to those who think that they don't like comics. It
is a happy marriage of high literature and popular
science fiction in a form that is very accessible
and very enjoyable. If you see something that
looks familiar in the book, it is probably because
so many later authors have been inspired by
Tezuka's ideas.

Istvan Nemere
Don Harlow
When William Auld wrote his Vereco,
Distro, Stilo in the early 1980s, it was still safe to
say that no more than fifty novels had been writ-
ten in Esperanto since the language's inception.
The figure may have been a bit understated —
Pro Esperanto recently published quite a long
novel by Ivan Ŝirjaev, a previously unpublished
work that some believe to have predated the
works of Henri Vallienne, believed by Auld and
others to have been the first novels in Esperanto
~ but it was likely in the ballpark.
In the last twenty years the figure has gone
up considerably, and one of those who has helped
to increase it is Istvan Nemere of Hungary.
Nemere, a long-time Esperanto speaker, is
also one of Hungary's best-known and best-paid
authors. I've heard that he has written 200 or 300
books in Hungarian. Not all of them are novels;
Nemere also has an interest in such exotic topics
as parapsychology and UFOs, and has written
many non-fiction works on these topics.
But what is interesting to us is that Nemere
also writes in Esperanto. Since the early eight-
ies, he has produced a number of books in the
language. Many of these, so I'm told, have also
appeared (and sold well) in Hungarian. But we
are not here talking about translations; Nemere
writes a novel in Hungarian and then indepen-
dently writes the same novel in Esperanto (or vice
versa), but does not constantly refer to one to
produce the other.
Nemere's original contribution to Esperanto
literature was a series of short stories, which were
eventually collected in his first book, La Naŭa
Kanalo, published around 1980 by the Hungar-
ian Esperanto Association. He has since produced
more short stories of various types, in various
locations, but I know of only one additional col-
lection, Amparolo, published by Al-fa-bet-o in
Sweden.
Many of Nemere's earlier novels were built
around interesting social problems. His second
novel, La blinda birdo, treats of the behavior of
Western liberals when confronted with the reali-
ties of a totalitarian state; Nemere sets the action
in a fictional cognate of the Union of South Af-
rica, at that time at the depths of apartheid, but
when we remember that Nemere was a citizen of
Communist Hungary, we may speculate that he
was considering matters somewhat closer to
home. Sur kampo granita has to do with a high
official of the Red Cross who is forced to face
his past when it is revealed that, as a German
officer during World War II, he permitted the
massacre of an Italian village; interestingly,
though the book was apparently based on a real
case, it was written years before UN
Secretary-General and President of Austria Kurt
Waldheim's situation came to light. La aha akvo
revolves around an environmental conundrum
(the construction of a dam); Dum vi estis kun ni
relates to euthanasia ("pulling the plug"). After
the mid-eighties, Nemere seemed to distance him-
self from such social-problem fiction, but his most
recent work, Krias la silento, returns to them with
the story of an up-and-coming author who is faced
with a son so teratogenically damaged by the
mother's drug use that the boy is almost a veg-
etable; this story, like Sur kampo granita, is based
on the actual case of a recent winner of the Nobel
Prize for literature.
In the interim, Nemere concerned himself
to a great extent with more "pedestrian" novels
of crime and adventure. Vivi estas danĝere and
Vipovas morti nur dufoje have to do with a young
mercenary, Danny Skagen, hired by the French
government to bring a war criminal to justice,
and the results of that operation. Febro is a novel
of revenge by an engineer whose lover was ap-
parently murdered by her husband; it also con-
tains one of the earliest and best erotic scenes to
be found in an Esperanto novel. Serĉu mian
sonĝon lies on the border between adventure fic-
tion and social-problem fiction; a young couple,
honeymooning in Venice, find themselves caught
up in the machinations of an old friend who is
actually an Armenian terrorist planning the as-
sassination of a high Turkish official. Serĉu kaj
vi trovos is a straightforward short crime novel.
Nemere has also produced a certain amount
of science-fiction. His first novel, La fermita
urbo, was straight science-fiction; Terra takes
place in the distant future; and La monto is in
many ways a traditional "lost-race" novel. Vizito
sur la teron, one of his more recent works, is an
It-Came-From-Outer-Space story.
While not always the easiest to follow,
Nemere's style will often capture the reader in
you-can't-put-it-down mode. The vocabulary he

occasionally use a neologism that the
fairly-competent speaker of Esperanto will have
to look up in a dictionary, this is fairly rare ~
Nemere writes literature for the masses, not for
other literateurs. In this, he is something of a rar-
ity in Esperanto-land.
Most of Nemere's earlier works were pub-

during the East European financial collapse that
followed the fall of the Soviet Union, he began
to diversify, and in recent years has had books

The 50th annual ELNA Congress will be held
June 21-24 in the Hawthorn Suites Hotel in
Sacramento, California, the city where ELNA was
founded half a century ago.
It looks as though it will be an interesting
Congress. As well as the usual activities (ELNA's
annual general meeting, reception for UEA delegates
- not to mention a special program presentation on
what a UEA delegate does and how to become one
-banquet, auction, etc.), the program will have some
new items. George Baker, an Esperanto speaker who
is one of the designers of the new earthquake-proof
eastern span of the Oakland Bay Bridge in
California, will give a talk on designing bridges.
Don Harlow will introduce us to some recent
problems and discoveries in the sky, as well as the
new Esperanto-based multilingual Astronomia
Terminaro, now available on the internet. Past
presidents of ELNA will hold a roundtable
discussion about ELNA's first fifty years and what
they anticipate from its next fifty years. And Prof.
Duncan Charters will offer a workshop on the use
of the videotape course Esperanto: Pasporto al la
Tata Mondo in teaching Esperanto to classes. In
addition, there will be presentations aimed primarily
at young people, conversation groups, and many
other program items.
You might also plan to spend some time outside
the Congress center. One evening will be devoted to
a picnic in a nearby park, from before until well
after sundown. On Monday, after the Congress
officially closes, there will be excursions to several
nearby points of interest. And on Tuesday, those who
have signed up will go on a longer excursion, into
the Gold Country of the Sierra Foothills to visit
Indian Grinding Rocks and the picturesque town of,
Volcano.
So come and enjoy. You can still register on-

The Best of the Rest of Brazil
Salvador la Bahia retains its African soul, combined with a
unique, vibrant culture. Blacks have preserved their culture
more than anywhere else in the "new" world. They have
maintained their religion and spirituality within Catholicism.
Most tourists who have visited once want to go back again
if for no other reason than the special music and food of the||
area. 2 nights.
Visit the state of Minas Gerais for 4 days. Half of the min-
eral production of Brazil comes from there, and it produces
95% of all of Brazil's gemstones.
Ouro Preto, where we will stay 3 nights, is the "jewel" in
the minero crown, and a World Cultural Heritage Site of
UNESCO.
Joao Del Rei is the gateway to the stunningly beautiful vil-
lage of Tiradents where we will stay in a traditional posada
for a night.
17 Aug - bus transfer to our hotel in Rio and half day tour
of the city to Corcovado and an evening party with local
Esperantists.
18 Aug - half day tour of city including Sugar Loaf Moun-
tain - transfer to airport for flights home, or as an option,
spend another night in Rio.
19 Aug - morning transfer to the airport for flight to Iguacu
Falls, with full sight-seeing of both the Brazilian and the
Argentine sections of the falls.
20 Aug - afternoon transfer to the airport for connecting
flights home through Sao Paulo.
Best Flights:
Air arrangements are complicated. We have some low
round-trip fares to Brazil, but if you plan to fly any-
where besides Fortaleza, your flights within Brazil need
to be tied to the international flights preferably with
the Brazil Airpass. This is limited in its use and needs
to be purchased as soon as possible to get the best rates.
dDon't delay!.
