TWo Languages for the Price of One? The Propaedeutic Puzzle How much more time would it take you to learn Japanese and Esperanto than to learn Japanese alone? If certain interlinguistic researchers are correct, the answer may be no time at all! These scientists advocate the propaedeutic hypothesis, which says that an invented language is a potent precursor for the study of an ethnic language. Aptitudes and motivations for language learning may both be boosted when one first studies a planned (or artificial) language. An argument for this hypothesis was made by Sylla M. Chaves in the information-theory journal Qrundlagenstudien aus Kybernetik und Geisteswissenschaft in 1978. Chaves reasoned that the surface features of a planned language are nearly isomorphic with grammatical categories (parts of speech, tenses, moods, cases, etc.) that monolinguals have internalized but have not yet learned to name or explicitly manipulate. Learning a planned language, he claimed, is like learning a model language. As in any field, models, though artificially simplified, may be better learning tools in preparation for the messy real world than realistically complex case studies. Thus, while learning any second language may help in learning a third language, the preparatory impact is hypothesized to be especially great when the second language is a planned one. If the propaedeutic effect is strong enough, time saved in acquisition of a third lan- guage might even exceed the time spent studying the second one. In other words, study of the planned language may more than pay for itself. If we knew this for a fact, we would all presumably want to precede our studies of foreign languages with study of a model language. A 1968 experiment in a United Kingdom middle school reported that students who studied Esperanto for 6 months and then French for 3 years emerged with greater mean fluency in French than matched students who took French for 4 years. An ex- periment in several elementary schools in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s resulted in an estimate that German children studying English for more than 3 years would be net gainers in terms of English competence if they converted their first year of study from English to Esperanto. Unfortunately, both of these studies allowed selfselection of student subjects, thus violating a basic rule of experimental design. It is easy to imagine that students willing to volunteer for the study of Esperanto, at the cost of a postponed study of English or French, are on average more interested in languages or more selfconfident about their ability to learn languages than those who take the traditional option. Until a rigorously controlled study is attempted, the propaedeutic power of a planned model language will remain an enticing but unproven claim. ESF would like to hear from schools and educational researchers interested in being consultants to, or participants in, a study to compare the propaedeutic effects of the preparatory study of planned and natural languages. Deadline for the next issue/Limdato por la sekva numero: 28.01.2000. Saluion ĉiiĝ. Please take a careful look at Sylvan's article about our financial situation. We are trying to provide many services to our members, as well as reaching out to the public to tell them about Esperanto, and it just takes an awful lot of time and money. One reason for our recent problems, of course, has been the huge amount of resources going in- to the Videotape Course project. Hopefully this will be finished in a year or two, and if things work out as planned (well, as hoped), it will actually start bringing in some money. Until then... or if things don't work out... well, please read Sylvan's article carefully. We're already getting questions about next year's Landa Kongreso (LK, or as we're calling it J2MLK: Jar-Du-Mil-Landa Kongreso). It will almost certainly be in Atlanta, and it will almost certainly be sooner than usual in the year - like May. Well have less time than usual to get information to you, so start reserving weekends in May 2000 now! We have started up our search for a new Director for the Central Of- fice. Anna Bennett has volunteered to head the search committee, and I'm confident we'll find a worthy replacement for Miko. If you are inter- ested in the office, or know someone who is, please contact either my- self or Anna at abennettiworldnet. att. net. We are also thinking about the 2000 ELNA elections. Like everything else connected with the National Convention, these will be a couple months earlier than normal. Please contact me or Kent Jones if you have some experience with the Movement or with running an organiz- ation and would like more information. I'm finishing this article the day after Thanksgiving, 1999. I'm thank- ful that ELNAhad a reasonably successful year: we started doing some real publicity outside our little organization, the Beer Poster was a big success, our 800 number has been improved, Project NOVA has star- ted up, our members have had a number of births (congratulations to Thomas Alexander!), we've added some more volunteers to our commit- tees. Cathy Schulze passed away, but I'm thankful that she was so strong and tenacious a part of our Movement for so many years. You'll probably receive this in January 2000. While this was at the printer or in the mail, the season's holidays have come and gone, and I hope you and your family have enjoyed them. Here's my fearless prediction for the future, which you can check immediately as a test of my predictive skills: Y2K caused a number of small and amusing problems, but no- thing major in the US. The goals were to introduce Esperanto to children in many lands, help children to learn about other countries by com- municating with the children, and for the teachers to ex- change suggestions and materials. Activities to date: (Translated from the letters of Charlotte Kohrs) Beginning in May 1987, we introduced Esperanto to more than 500 children in 12 school classes for periods of 35 to 50 minutes each week in each class; for most children for at least nine months. We taught Esperanto to all children in each class and to the teacher. We helped the classes to write short letters or postcards to classes in other places. We wrote about our goals to Esperantists and others. In our first decade, 155 adults have been members of CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD. In 1988, with the help of a sti- pend from the Carson Educational Foundation in Calgary, Canada, we created a cassette of 12 con- versational songs, Kantu Eper- ante kun Janico kaj Johano (Sing in Esperanto with Janice and ^John). Step by step, these songs illustrate the basic Esperanto grammar. In 1991 we published an all Esperanto text based on the 12 songs. To date we have sent the cassette to more than 375 Es- perantists in other countries. don (Let's Explore the World). They also included seven of our songs with music notes. The lessons are on large pages which teachers have the right to photocopy for their students. The World Constellation LA MONDA STELARO is an Inter- national Esperanto Club for children from 6 to 17 years old. To become a star, a student must learn 50 words and learn to ask three basic questions. S(he) must also promise to help someone learn Esperanto at least 10 minutes each week. As early as 1994, we sent a certificate of membership in LA MONDA STELARO to a student in China. Action Day AGO-TAGO involves groups of two or more children in countries all overthe world singing the same song in Esperanto. It is very easy to learn because it is sung to the melody of Frere Jacques (Brother John): Sur la Tero, beta Tero (On the Earth, beautiful Earth) Loĝas ni, kantas ni. (We live, we sing.) Kune sur la Tero, (Together on the Earth) Monda familio. (A world family.) Fa/77/7/', /am///'. (A family, a family.) From 1996 to 1998 at least 24 countries participated. See J una amiko September 1998. Project SHEN, named after Pro- fessor SHEN Chengru at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, simplifies the exchange between children by having them provide only a picture, without ft: Many were enthusiastic about the Anar'e White (U£MPetra5mideliu5z (Hungary) words The Esperantist then pro- songs and text as useful teaching a* ^A^K vides the Esperanto caption for materials and cooperated with us. However, the majority taught Esperanto to only 1-4 children. We are looking for larger classes. Since December 1991, through our project, World-Circle, MONDO-RONDO, CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD helped groups of two or more children to correspond by post- card. Whenever we receive the names and addresses of 8- 10 groups who want to participate in MONDO-RONDO, we send a copy of the list to each group on the list. With every list we send a postcard about San Diego, with an Esperanto message written by a child. Since October 1993, we have worked with Kent Jones, Commissioner of Education for ELNA (Esperanto League for North America). During the last year Kent Jones guided 19 school teachers in the United States, who introduced Esper- anto to their students. Many of them used our new text, Dek ĥdemandoj (Ten Questions). The 12 lessons and games are based on ten simple questions and answers in our booklet La bela planedo (The Beautiful Planet) and NI esploru la mon- the picture. BOOKS & CASSETTES suitable for elementary schools are available from CATW without charge to any child. They discover that it is fun to teach and that they are useful, valu- able persons. Since their vocabulary is so limited, students get into the habit of using the dictionary. Charlotte Kohrs will remain president of the group of special helpers, Jim Droege, Ellen Eddy, Thomas Gerleman, Ronald Glossop, Donald Houpe, Kent Jones, Kim Keeble, Mary K. Mills, Mary Napolitan, Lawrence Parker, SHEN Chengru, and Dori Vallon-Wheeler, but due to failing health she has asked Darlene Evans to become the director. Children and the young at heart are invited to send pictures of an ideal world for children with an Esperanto caption to Darlene Evans, 1210 E 2nd Av #2, Indianola IA 50125, USA. If they do not become available we will be facing the loss of valuable services. To understand how this crisis has come about it is helpful to understand a little bit about ELNA's history. In the late 1980s ELNA was the re- cipient of a wonderful gift which transformed our organization. Ella Gibson bequeathed ELNA a valuable property. The property was sold and the money was used to set up the Ella Gibson Fund. Up until that time ELNA, with just one full-time employee, relied on volunteers to do a great deal of the routine work. Book orders were of- ten taken care of by volunteers and, when not enough people made it in, book orders took a very long time to fill. Other services often were not provided in a timely fashion. Using money from the Ella Gibson Fund ELNA was able to hire a sec- ond full-time staff member and rent an inexpensive but spacious central office in Emeryville, California, next to Oakland. With two full-time staff members and an adequate amount of storage and office space ELNA was able to improve its service drama- tically. The services that ELNA pro- vides today include the following: -v* The Esperanto Book Service: ELNA's central office stocks about 1000 titles and 30,000 books in or about Esperanto. The Book Service also stocks CDs, audio cassettes, video cassettes and other items. Each member receives a free catalog and a discount on all orders. ^ The Esperanto Magazine Service: ELNA provides its members with a convenient way to order more than twenty different Esperanto magazines that are published on five con- tinents. Members can place a single order and pay in US funds, either by cash, check, money order or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover). The magazines range all the way from the literary magazine Fonio to the rock music mag- azine Rok-Gazet', ^ The Publishing Program: ELNA publishes books to in- form the public about Esperan- to and to help Esperantists im- prove their use of the language. David Richardson's Esperan- to: Learning and Using the In- ternational Language is found in many libraries throughout the country. Peter Benson's Comprehensive English- Esperanto Dictionary is the most extensive and thorough English-Esperanto dictionary ever published. Montagu But- ler's Step by Step in Esperanto, which may be used either as a very thorough textbook or as a reference book has been so popular that is now in its ninth edition. The new edition of Da- vid Jordan's Being Colloquial in Esperanto: A Reference Guide will be the most up-to- date usage guide to Esperanto that has appeared in English. ^ The Publicity Program: ELNA has sent an invitation to learn about Esperanto and the foreign language curriculum to more than four thousand for- eign language teachers. ELNA is also mailing a special offer for the four books mentioned above to thousands of libraries. ELNA believes that when peo- ple become interested in checking out Esperanto they should find attractively printed, bound up-to-date materials in their public library. ^> The Web Site: ELNA main- tains an attractive, profession- ally designed web site that in- forms websurfers about our language and about our organ- ization. This web site includes ELNA's catalog of almost 1000 items. ^ The ELNA-Kongreso: ELNA holds an annual congress where members and guests, some from other countries, come together to meet old friends and make new friends, socialize, learn more about Es- peranto and the worldwide Es- peranto community, and dis- cuss and vote on proposals in business meetings. 4- The Video Course: ELNA is assisting in the creation of the fifteen-lesson video Esperanto course Esperanto: Pasporto al la tuta mondo. The first lessons of this course are now avail- able on video cassettes. Volunteers have created special projects for ELNA's members: * Esperanto Vojaĝ-Servo 6104 LaSalle Ave., Oakland CA 94611 U.S.A. To experience the clear and friend- ly telephone service that Char- lie set up to provide informa- tion to members of the press, to educators and to all others who phone ELNA for informa- tion about our language, please dial 1-800-ESPERANTO. These are just a few of the many fine services which volunteers (who 1 pome from all over the country) have provided and are providing. How- ever, there is simply too much work for volunteers to handle all by them- selves. In order to continue to pro- vide quality, timely services to our members we need to maintain our full-time professional staff as well as the office that houses them, their equipment and the thousands of items that the Book Service handles. We have been fortunate to find dedi- cated Esperanto speakers willing to work long hours for very modest sal- aries and we have also been fortunate to find an office that provides the space that we need at a price that we have been able to afford. For more than ten years now Ella Gibson's generous endowment has made it possible for ELNA to enjoy its central office and its professional -staff. However, little by little the -irnd has been used up. ELNA had hoped for a sizable bequest that would continue this funding but that bequest went instead to another wor- thy organization, the Esperanto Stud- ies Foundation. In a year or two the Gibson Fund will be exhausted. The dues of our members only pay a fraction of the costs of running our present opera- tion. Do the math: 900 members pay- ing $30 each would be just $27,000. Some members voluntarily pay high- er dues, but many others pay at the low-income or youth rate, so ELNA's dues income is actually lower than this. In fact, as our treasurer's report showed in the last issue, the dues are not quite enough to fully cover the salary and benefits of even one (underpaid!) employee, let alone office rent and utilities, phone bills, postage, the expense of putting out Esperanto USA, ELNA Update, the Membership List and the Book Catalog, and ELNA's many other necessary expenses, including a second full-time employee. ELNA is facing a big challenge, the challenge of obtaining enough fi- nancing to continue or, hopefully, even improve on its present level of service. You can help by: ^ Continuing your support as a member of ELNA <0 Helping ELNA acquire new members ^ Purchasing the video Esperanto course Esperanto: Pasporto al la tuta mondo <& Purchasing books, magazine subscriptions and other items from ELNA. -v* Making a donation to the Ella Gibson Fund. This will provide the basic funding that keeps our organization intact La libroservo de ELNA ankoraŭ havas ekzemplerojn de la Esperanta Kalendaro 2000 kontraŭ nur po $4.75. THANKS FOR YOUR LONGTIME SUPPORT MANY of you members have given your continued generous fi- nancial support for the Summer Esperanto Workshops at SFSU over the past 30 years. This support has come from local clubs, in- dividuals, and past participants (Esperanto-Studintoj de San Fran- cisko) in the courses. Two foundations (the Ellen Lewis and the Hester Renfro-Wood) were set up in memory of these two women so that the interest could pay for scholarships. Bill and Cathy Schulze always provided the balance needed. Now Cathy has guaranteed that there will always be enough money for the cour- ses. She left her money to the Esperantic Studies Foundation, with the stipulation that the courses would be provided for. This will make planning so much easier when we don't have to worry about raising funds for scholarships. HOWEVER, there are some important ways that you can still par- ticipate. You can encourage new Esperantists to attend the classes. You can suggest that they ask for scholarship help if they need it. You can write a letter of recommendation to me if you know of someone who is hesitant about participating because of lack of funds. You each are still needed to make the courses a success. Please don't hesitate to contact me with suggestions and recom- mendations. And most of all, you can send a big prayer of thanks to Cathy for her wonderful planning to guarantee the continuation of one of ELNA's greatest contribution to the Esperanto world. Ellen M. Eddy, Administrator, North American Summer Esper- anto Workshops, 11736 Scott Creek Dr, Olympia WA 98512; S eddyellen@aol.com. Leteru!
