10 YEARS: AFTER
Antaŭ ĝuste unu jaro mi fariĝis la redaktoro de tiu ĉi novaĵletero, kaj la numero
kiun vi nun legas estas la sepa de ml redaktita (sen enkalkuli la Literaturan su-
plementon).
Post tuta jaro da zorga laboro mi ŝatus koni la opiniojn de tiuj al kiuj mia laboro
estas dediĉita - la membra] de ELNA. Mi, do, petas vin bombardi min per leteraj
kaj mesaĝoj, kiuj portu al mi viajn sincerajn opiniojn pri Esperanto USA ĝenerale
kaj aparte pri ĝiaj lastaj sep numeroj. Sen viaj reagoj estas al mi neeble objektive
taksi la kvaliton kaj utilon de mia laboro. Surbaze de viaj reagoj mi povus ŝanĝi
- se montriĝos necese - miajn labor-stilon kaj ritmon, kaj provizi vin per novajle-
tero eĉ pli interesa kaj utila.
Estus al mi utile scii, kio plej multe (mal)plaĉis al vi en la lastaj sep numeroj de
Esperanto USA, kio estis utila aŭ senvalora, agrabla aŭ ĝena, sekvinda au for-
gesenda.
Krom reagojn mi bonvenigas ankau kontribuajojn. La rubriko "Loke kaj regi-
one" aparte soifas je indaj novaĵoj. Kvankam plaĉus al mi viziti viajn lokojn kaj
regionojn, momente mi devas kontentiĝi nur per viaj leteroj kaj mesaĝoj. Kom-
preneble, se vi preferas persone porti ilin al mi, mi plezure bonvenigos vin.
Aparte bonvenaj estas materiatoj de/pri la vegetanta USEJ kaj la diversaj fakaj
E-grupoj (ne)agantaj nialande. Ĉu vi trafis lastatempe interesajn "variajojn" de
la angla, kiuj unuavide ŝajnis sensencaj? Ni bonvenigas ilin senhezite. Same kiel
menciojn pri Esperanto, kiujn vi trovis en eldonaĵoj (nepre aldonu la necesajn bi-
bliografiajn informojn).
La CO de ELNA bonvenigas ankaŭ alispecajn kontribuajojn - financajn. Hi
certigas bonan funkciadon de la CO, profesiigon de ĝia laboro, regulan aper-
adon de niaj eldonajoj, plibonigon de niaj servoj kaj, jes, la estontecon de ELNA.
Ĉi-somere aperis la longe atendita Literatura suplemento. Ĉu vi ŝatus ĝui alian

It's time to start thinking about re-
newing your membership. This arti-
cle should be in your hands by mid-
October, and the renewal notices
should arrive soon after that. We've
been working hard to improve ELNA
the last couple of years. We are now
delivering Esperanto USA reliably
and on time. We have an award-win-
ning Web site (see below) and an
easy to remember 800 number (and
that should be seeing some, ah,
"enhancements" soon). We've doub-
led your Book Service discount to
10%. We've had excellent National
Conventions. Our publicity campaign
is getting some preliminary results.
After several years of slow decline,
our membership is up a few percent
from last year. And soon - possibly
even in time for your renewal - we'll
be accepting credit cards!
If this pleases you, how can you let
us know? Of course, you can renew.
That's our best indication that you
appreciate what ELNA does for you.
If you want to show special apprecia-
tion, upgrade your regular member-
ship to a supporting membership - or
your supporting membership to the
Patron level. Every $30 means more

flyers that we can hand out; more in-

to Bill Harmon. Bill has worked
long and hard for both ELNA and
UEA, and is an Honorary Member of
ELNA. Now he has been elected an
Honorary Member of UEA.
An Ege Bone! to Prof. Henry
Cooper. Indiana University recently
asked him for a course to help intro-
duce students to major issues in the
humanities, social sciences and hard
sciences. Prof. Cooper proposed a
course on Esperanto and how it can
introduce students to a variety of im-
portant issues in linguistics. The uni-
versity accepted, and the students
started signing up... and signing up...
and now 61 students are studying Es-
peranto. (Prof. Cooper says, "This is
currently the largest course in the
Slavic Department - it is certainly the
largest course I have ever taught in
my life.") It may even end up gen-
erating a local club.
Congratulations to Jay Fishman,
who maintains our World Wide Web
home page (www. esperanto-usa.
org). Martin Weichert maintains a
web site with links to the home pages
of national Esperanto organizations.
He recently awarded our site three
stars - the maximum possible - for
interesting and up-to-date content and
excellent appearance.
Last, our sympathy to board mem-
ber Gary Grady, whose father Dan
passed away September 21st.

Mobile telephone manufacturer
Nokia stopped a huge poster campaign
in Germany in June after discovering
that its advertising slogan Jedem das
Seine (To each his own) was the same
as the motto over the gates of Buchen-
wald concentration camp. The Finnish
company was forced to remove 3,000
posters and pulp thousands of bro-
chures following protest from the Ber-
lin branch of the American-Jewish,

There are several official matters
with which I shall begin, after which
I shall turn my attention to less seri-
ous stuff.
-  From time to time somebody
contacts the CO. asking for an ad-
dress or phone number of a member
because the information in question
is not listed in the Membrolisto or its
update. I request that you not request
this information: we will not give it,
because the member in question has
asked that it not be printed nor given
out to anyone.
- It is expressly forbidden to use
the ELNA Membership List or its
update for mass mailings, even if the
subject matter deals with Esperanto
and has a noble goal.
-   Any questions or comments
about the contents of periodicals for
which ELNA acts as financial agent
should be sent to the publisher of the
leriodical in question. This also ap-
plies to delivery problems, address
changes etc.
- ELNA does not arrange pen-pals
between individuals; but we gladly
print pen-pal requests here in Espe-
ranto USA, although we do not take
responsibility for their eventual suc-
cess or failure.
- Please do not use the number 1-
800-ESPERANTO to place orders,
check on book availability etc. This
number is only for initial requests for
information. Any message left there
might go unheard for as much as a
week. Please conduct business with
the CO. staff at 1-510-6530998 or
by e-mail at elna@esperanto-
usa.org.
- Money transfers to UEA can take
a long time, even several weeks;
please do not wait until the last mo-
lent before a deadline to send
Itoney for the CO. to transfer. If
quickness is important, you can send
a check directly to UEA (you will be
charged a fee of NLG22.00 per
check) or send them permission to
charge your credit card (you will be
charged a fee of 5%).
- Those who have suggestions of
how to "improve" Esperanto should
send them to the Akademio de Espe-
ranto, not to the CO. of ELNA.
- Not all Esperanto periodicals can
appear in our abonservo. While we
do not categorically rule out includ-
ing other periodicals, we are gener-
ally already aware of what is avail-
able.
-   Please send address changes
directly to the CO. The US Postal
Service neither forwards nor returns
bulk mail.
- Prices, sales taxes and shipping
charges on books and other merchan-
dise are calculated based on "ship to"
address, regardless of where or how
the order was placed. There is no
sales tax on services.
OK. Enough serious business. Now
on to other themes!
Recently I was contacted by a re-
presentative of the World Citizen
Web, who is looking for somebody
to translate the contents of their web-
site into Esperanto. They also have a
brochure which wants translation. If

This must be a "labor of love", that
is, there is no money involved. This
would, however, be an excellent
showcase for Esperanto, so I hope
that somebody can find the time to
do   the   translations   in   question.
Please keep me informed if you vol-
unteer for this project, or if you
come across other similar requests.
Some months ago I requested your
ideas for slogans to use in our
forthcoming advertising campaign. I
thank you for your many sugges-
tions. I am still open to further candi-
dates, and in general always wel-
come your input about how to pro-
mote Esperanto. Especially encour-
aging are reports of your success in
getting a mention of the language in
the media somehow.
Much of our best "advertising" for
our dear language comes from the
little articles and letters published in
local newspapers which are written
as a result of personal initiative on
the part of the subject. If you atten-
ded an interesting Esperanto conven-
tion, entertained a fascinating Espe-
ranto-speaking guest, received an
amazing letter written in the Inter-
national Language: these are just the
sort of public interest stories which
editors of small newspapers love.
But you must contact the editor with
the story, for they are not mind-read-
ers! I urge you to write a little des-
cription of your recent Esperanto-
based adventures and send it to the
editor of your local newspaper. And
then please send me a copy of the ar-
ticle or letter after it is published.

TREASURER'S REPORT
The Esperanto League for North America has a fiscal
year ending April 30. The following is a report for the
fiscal year ending April 30, 1998.
The complete financial report was distributed with the
Jarraporto at the ELNA Congress in Montreal. ELNA
has three types of funds: Unrestricted Funds (which are
available for general expenses), Temporarily Restricted
Funds (which can only be used for expenses associated
with certain types of activities, such as the SFSU Funcl
for helping individuals attending SFSU summer Espe-
ranto classes or the Educational Video Fund whose funds
can only be used for producing educational videos such
as Pasporto al la tuta mondo), and Permanently Re-
stricted Funds (which are endowment funds - thus only
income from these funds can be spent). Below is a sum-
mary of last year's income and expenses.

NAKE-INTINOI E»AROLA$
Varmega vetero, varmaj salutoj kaj frem-
da lingvo bonvenigis nin al la 46-a jarkon-
greso de ELNA en Montrealo, Kanado, inter
la 24a kaj 27a de julio 1998. Pro bonvena
invito de la Esperanto-Societo Kebekia, ni
kunkongresis kun ĝi kaj la Kanada Esper-
anto-Asocio kadre de la Nord-Amerika
Kongreso de Esperanto (NAKE) en ege
oportnna loko apud la sportejo kaj la loĝlo-
koj de la Olimpikaj Ludoj de 1976. Elirinte
la aviadilon Ĉe Dorval-FIughaveno, oni estis
tuj frapita de la franca lingvo, kaj aude kaj
vide. Eĉ nia taksiisto al la hotelo "Auberge
du Pare" bone parolis la francan. Li naskiĝis
en Haitio. Bonŝance por ni, li parolis ankaŭ
la anglan. La deĵoranto ĉe la hotelo tuj ŝan-
ĝis el la franca al la angla post niaj unuaj sa-
lutvortoj. Ni sentis nin pretaj por novaj sper-
toj en fremda lando.
Vendredon vespere, la LKK bonvenigis
nin ĉe interkonatiga kuniĝo en la subtera
distrejo de la hotelo, La Bar, per multaj lu-
doj, kantado, muziko, dancado kaj ludoj. La
celo estis prezenti veran Kebekiecan vespe-
ron, kiu multege sukcesis. Mi opinias ke la
membroj de la Estraro aparte ĝuis la distr-
ajojn post sia tuttaga laborkunsido pli frue.
Kiam la ELNA-Kongreso oficiale malfer-
miĝis sabate, almenaŭ 110 personoj jam re-
gistris sin al NAKE. Krom la kutimaj afer-
kunsidoj, okazis tiom da interesaj prezent-
adoj, ke oni devis elekti inter ili. Liter la di-
versaj prezentadoj troviĝis la jenaj temoj:
Movada strategio: kio bremsas nin; Kiel al-
logi kaj reteni studantojn; NIFOj kaj la Ba-
bela turo; Pensoj pri Esperanto; Lingvaj/et-
naj problemoj; Lernigaj ludoj: teorio/prakti-
ko; La Dulcimero; Gestlinvgoj de Nordame-
riko kaj de la mondo.
Sabatan vesperon, post bankedo kun bon-
gustaj manĝajoj, la ĉeestantoj ĝuis origina-
lan komikan teatrajeton de Tom Eccardt ti-
tolitan La angla leciono kaj parton de la ori-
ginate simfonio Esperanto-Simfonio verkita
de D-ro David Gaines.
Elstara parto de la kongreso estis la kon-
certo de Kajto. La kvarpersona Esperanto-
muzikgrupo el Nederlando, antaŭe kantis
multfoje ĉe diversaj Esperantaj kunvenoj en
Eŭropo, sed ĉi tiu estis ĝia unua Esperanto-
koncerto en Ameriko. La grupo regalis nin
per plejparte Esperantaj kantoj kaj ankaŭ per
kantoj en sia denaska lingvo, la frisa. La
grapanoj invitis la spektantojn kunkanti kel-
kajn refrenojn kaj kanterojn, kiuj aldonis al
la ĝuo. La fma kanto (ŝajne senfina), taŭge
nomita La lasta kanto, donis dolĉan konklu-
don al belega sperto. La muzikistoj kaj mul-
taj el la spektantoj kunigis la manojn kaj
ĉenstaris dum ĉiuj ripete kaj sopire kantis.
La kongresanoj havis du okazojn ekskursi
en malnovaj urbo-partoj, duontage en mal-
grandaj grapoj al la malnova Montrealo kaj
postkongrese en tuttaga vojaĝo al la mal-
nova Kebeko. Pro la persona gvidado de la
LKK-anoj, ni eksciis multon pri la historio
de unu el niaj plej proksimaj najbaroj.
Se vi maltrafis la ĉi jaran ELNA-Kongre-
son, jam ekprepariĝu por la venontjara, por
kiu ni ricevis inviton de St. Louis, Misurio.
I bit my lip and listened hard, trying to
decipher the words, to understand them, to
reply intelligibly. Huh? Oh, bone, kaj vi?
Liz Raible, Louisville, Kentucky, um... oh
yeah, I registered, whoops already picked up
my name tag - smile - okay, bag, lots of
brochures, nice, gee thanks... and a sched-
ule, how handy - smile again - dankon, ĝis.
I turned around, only to face another group
of Esperanto-speakers behind me, but I was
not disheartened: I had succeeded in receiv-
ing and communicating information orally
in Esperanto for the first time - perhaps a
small step for mankind, but a giant step for
a man.
I traveled to the North American Esper-
anto Conference without having spoken Es-
peranto before, not knowing what to expect
- who the people would be, what we would
do, if I would even understand anyone. I
had a year and a half of studying and writ-
ing Esperanto underneath me, plus any lan-
guage skills I had developed from studying
Spanish, so I felt that as long as I kept a po-
sitive attitude and a quick mind I could take
on the world. Well, whatever of the world
that spoke Esperanto and showed up at the
Auberge du Pare in Montreal.
I'll admit it straight up: it was intimidat-
ing to be in an environment where everyone
was speaking a language with such seeming
ease, and I had to mull over every word.
Would I make a mistake? I forgot the accus-
ative a lot, and what about my rather limited
vocabulary? However, I'll say this straight
up as well: my fears did not matter. I had a
teacher once who said that "communication
is the goal of language." While not very
profound, the statement is infinitely wise:
communication takes place on many levels,
and there in the hotel lobby were a few doz-
en people who understood many of them.
Sure, there were trips to the dictionary, but
communication does not require precise
grammar. I was at home after I entered a
conversation for the first time - and that
first successful communication gave me
much confidence. I was armed with confi-
dence, a positive attitude, and a ready mind.
I dove into the swirling pool of NAKE.
The four days (23-27 July) of NAKE in
Montreal were a fantastic experience, es-
pecially for greenhorns to the world of Es-
peranto like myself. Once I got over the ini-
tial - albeit small - barrier of getting an Es-
peranto word out of my mouth, the confer-
ence offered numerous opportunities. First
and, of course, most important, was the
gathering of Esperantists. Like many stu-
dents of the tongue, I lack the essential part
of language - another person to share it with
- when it comes to Esperanto. However, the
group of Esperanto-speakers who attended
the meeting were, as I have found most to
be, not intimidating, and speckled with
speakers of all levels. One of the more in-
teresting aspects of the group was its diver-
sity. How many different people can there
be at a North American conference?, you
ask disbelievingly. The joint meeting of Es-
peranto groups from Canada (especially
Quebec, as it is French-speaking) and US
led to an interesting mixture - especially
since the temptation to aligatori was signifi-
cantly lessened by the fact that your conver-
sant did not, perhaps, share your language.
In other matters, the events were interest/
ing, informative and (are you seeing a pat*
tern yet?) excellent opportunities to improve
oral comprehension and knowledge of the
world of Esperanto. Topics ranging from
teaching strategies to the dulcimer offered a
varied menu, especially for a relatively
small meeting. Esperanto singing and Que-
becois dancing during the Interkona Vespe-
ro and a presentation of David Gaines' Es-
peranto-Simfonio at the banquet added still
more variety. And of course, special high-
lights included the excursion to old Mon-
treal and the Kajto concert at the Botanical
Garden.
First experiences always hold a special
magic: everything is new and yet to be ex-
plored. NAKE in Montreal was my first ex-
perience in the living world of Esperantio,
and as I explored the people there and the
language we used, I watched the breathing
language I had chased through letters and e-
mails come alive finally as my ears and
tongue caught it. I cannot compare NAKE
with other ELNA meetings, but I have no
complaints - only thanks that I and the hun-
dred-some other attendees had the opportu-
nity to be a part of such a meeting and
create the magic that is Esperanto.

Martin is one of two or three net experts recognized as such
by UEA. His site shows it. Martin's "Internet/Esperanto Yel-
low Pages" are one of the most useful resources for Esperan-
tists who want to find out what is where on-line. But the site
contains other things, as well, including a number of articles
about one of Martin's favorite topics, "graphic literature" (As-
terikso, Tinĉjo, etc.) in Esperanto. You can also get an idea of
what some relatively famous Esperantists on-line look like via
his interesting collection of black-and-white thumbnails and
his (slower-to-load) set of links to the sites of the individuals
concerned.

Kibo missed this one in his original posting. It's one of a
couple of dozen national Esperanto organization home pages,
and in terms of quality it's very good, though - in 1998 terms
- nothing spectacular (see e.g. the Colombian Esperanto home
page at http://esperanto-kolombio.org/). But it's
very attractive, has a fair amount of meat to it, and for ELNA
members it's a definite yes-yes.

What if I told you that a major
U.S. corporation was providing an
easily-accessible place for Esperant-
ists to practice their language skills,
but very few were taking advantage
of it?
Well, that is what's happening now
on the on-line service CompuServe.
First, let me make it clear that I have
no connection to CompuServe Incor-
porated (CSI), financial or otherwise,
except for the fact that I pay them
every month as a CSI subscriber.
On CompuServe's "Foreign Lan-
guage Forum", which CSI members
can access by typing GO FLEFO,
there is an "Esperanto Section." CSI
"sections" are similar to newsgroups,
in which you can post messages, and
read and reply to messages others
have posted. In addition, the Foreign
Language Forum provides an Espe-
ranto chat room where you can com-
municate in "real time" with other
Esperantists, and an "Esperanto Li-
brary" where documents are posted
for you to download (I just down-
loaded a copy of Lincoln's Gettys-
burg Address translated into Espe-
ranto!).
What's my concern? Only a very
few Esperantists from around the
world use the Esperanto Section on
CompuServe. I know that if sections
are not well used, they will eventu-
ally be discontinued. I would hate to
see this section dropped, not only be-
cause we would lose an excellent ve-
hicle for using Esperanto, but be-
cause of the message it would send
about the Esperanto movement. We
must take advantage of these oppor-
tunities that are provided to us. If a
business is willing to support Espe-
ranto, we must support it in return.
A quick scan of the ELNA mem-
bership list reveals over 20 people
have CompuServe e-mail addresses.
I challenge all of you to visit the Es-
peranto Section in the Foreign Lan-
guage Forum and post some mes-
sages. And if you are shopping
around for an on-line service, con-
sider CompuServe because of the
support it provides the Esperanto
movement.

"Practicing Esperantists often hang out on IRC for real-time
chats as well." Kibo is here referring to the IRC channel #es-
peranto, where you can go to talk, real-time, in Esperanto.
But today #esperanto is falling into disuse. I suspect that,
given the number of other, and generally superior, chat sys-
tems now proliferating on the net, the same thing will happen
to the rest of IRC in a few years. Among Esperantists, the cur-
rent main chat system seems to be Mirabilis' ICQ. There are
several ICQ lists available for Esperantists, but the best known
and largest (with, as of Sep. 9,1998,116 subscribers from 33
countries) is the one given above, maintained by Marcos Pi-
menta and Luis Venicio in Brazil. One new Esperantist, ad-
vised of its existence, wrote: "Mi petis la helpon de mia 13-
jara filo(!!) kaj li konektigis min al ICQ. Estas vere mirinde!
En nur 2 tagoj mi trovis multajn esperantistojn - en Brazilo,

La plej karakteriza humoro de la poeto
estas la melankolio. Ne vane, la vorto
"morto" aperas tre ofte. Kaj se ne temas
pri morto, ofte ni renkontiĝas en la libro
kun maljuneco, malgajo, spleno, sufero,
amaro. Laŭ mi, la poeto speciale sukce-
sas en la ĝenro poezio en prozo. Tiuj mi-
niaturoj (Al mia naskotero, Vortoj pri la
silento, Kvereleto, Abrikotoj, Amo al la
vasto) estas tre fluaj, impresas forme kaj
sente.
Kelkaj versajoj estas tre notindaj: Mia
patrino (kompatabildo de lapatrino, kiu
laboregas, fritante fiŝojn por gastoj; "eĉ
pli eksvenetas panjo, laca, kaj rompita
plene, en silent' eklarmas"), Ho Dio, tiuj
ĉi jaroj (maljunaj geedzoj vivas solece
kaj nur fpje en jaro iliaj filoj skribas al ili
leteron plendante pri la malfacila vivo),
Alpoeti.no Hilda, por la 80-a naskiĝtago
(la plej bela laŭforme versajo, optimisma
malgraŭ ne tute ĝojiga jubileo, pri la
mirinda homo kaj poeto Hilda Dresen).
Tra la tuta libro fadenas la temo pri la
naskolando, kiun la aŭtoro tre amas kaj
al kies suferoj li elkore kunsentas.
Por mi, kiu ŝatas klarajn ritmojn en la
poezio, pluraj lokoj en la libro ŝajnas
fuŝetaj: por konservi la ritmon, oni devas
legi iujn vortojn senakcente aŭ eĉ misak-
cente aŭ paŭzi. Ne ĉiam la aŭtoro zorgas
pri la flueco de la parolo, tial oni stum-
blas ĉc akumuliĝo de konsonantoj: Aug-
hastis, cerbĉel-memor', fajntiklan, lamp-
lumoj, rezistprovo.
Por ne fini je malgaja noto, mi citu
preskaŭ solan amuzan versajon:

Cosmic language...
American Astronaut Dave Wolf talked about the isol-
ation and loneliness he felt living on the Russian space
station Mir because ofthe language barrier. Wolfs re-
placement, Andy Thomas, the last American scheduled
to live abroad Mir, had problems during interviews.
"Answer in Russian," snapped a Russian reporter when

With Japanese and Spanish editions of the Geogra-
phic already a success, the Society introduced an Ital-
ian edition in February... A Hebrew Geographic
based in Israel debuted in June, and other editions are

most letter writers from these countries are saying,

in its #64 this "definitive guide to the
zine revolution" dedicated space to
ELNA Update, Esperanto USA and the
1998 Esperanto Catalog.
Scott Nesbitt in On-line dictionaries
and automatic translation (MultiLingual
Computing & Technology»„.#21, Vol. 9,
Issue 5) mentions Esperanto with refe-
rence to the on-line Travlang multilin-
gual dictionary (dictionaries,
travlang. com).
A very interesting article (Esperanto
around-the-circle card from 1913) by
Rob Haesler was published in Linn's
Stamp News (Aug 17, 1998) about an
around-the-circle postcard with Espe-
ranto text. Besides the story behind the
card, the author goes into details giving
a brief history of Esperanto and its ac-
complishments. Included are also the
original Esperanto text on the card and
its English translation.
Dave Ford picks on English in Of
Minivans and Bedtime Reading (San
Francisco Bay Times Sep 3, 1998):
"[A]nd I don't understand why, because
English is English so why have different
words, but they [British - ed.] call the
car trunk the 'boot' and an elevator a

ih faras jam nun), ke «ĉiuj plej gravaj es-
perantistoj deziras reformojn, nur la aŭ-
toro malpermesas». Tial mi persone de-
vas nun agi tre singarde kaj atendi, ĝis
finiĝos la laboroj de la «Delegacio».
Mi esperas, ke ĉiuj soldatoj de nia ar-
meo faros ĉion, kion ili povas, por kon-
vinki la erarantajn esperantistojn, ke re-
formojn postulas ne la «plimulto da es-
perantistoj», sed tre malgranda grupo,
jjkaj ke la reformistoj kondukas nian afe-
ron ne al bono, sed al pereo.
NEWS FROM THE UK
The glory of any Universala Kongreso
is the quantity of Esperantists who gather
there. I am surely not the only citizen of
this fleeting ephemeral town who be-
comes giddy at the simple sight of mas-
sive crowds of samideanoj. Unfortunate-
ly this is also the biggest problem facing
any UK-participant: there is too much to
do, too many old friends to greet and
new friends to meet! It is hard to slow
down in the midst of such a whirligig of
human energy. We all suffer sleep depri-
vation and overstimulation.
Of course, each UK has its own char-
acter. One of the most memorable as-
pects of the Montpellier convention was
the weather: the relentless heat was not
even broken by the torrential rain which
canceled a set of outdoor concerts which
should have been among the cultural
highlights of the week. The French etoso
permeated the air, both literally in the
form of heady odours of Provencal cui-
sine wafting through the pedestrian
zones of the Medieval quarter adjacent to
the convention center, and figuratively in
the form of happy melodies of Medi-
terranean folk music and the ready prox-
imity of cafes in the shade of trees lining
the esplanade.
The cultural richness was but little di-
luted by the cancellation of the concerts,
for there was already more music, thea-
tre, poetry, etc. than was possibly digest-
ible. Fortunately one of the main acts
which was rained out had already been
scheduled to make a second appearance,
so the band called Persone gave their
audience a concert of beautiful acoustic
music, which was for me among the
highlights of the convention. This
showed a different aspect of the talented
trio, which usually plays aggressively
loud electric rock'n'roll. Another unfor-
gettable presentation was the dramatic
recitation of a long poem based on re-
naissance French fairy tales: the actress/
poet Solen' wove an enchanting spell
over all who were fortunate enough to
hear this lively modern manifestation of
the bardic tradition.
On excursion day, I joined a group
bound for the marshes of the Rhone river
delta, called the Camargue, where we
toured around a bit during the morning,
visiting a rice museum and salt moun-
tain, and taking a nature hike along mud-
dy trails; and then we rented bicycles for
a nice long ride in the afternoon. Others
visited nearby towns famed for their
ancient charm, architectural beauty and
wealth of history.
After several more days of intense soc-
ial and cultural frenzy, the magical town
of UKujo, the capital of Esperantio,
vanished with few traces but the mem-
ories and photos of its former citizens.
The same magic which creates a town
which vanishes after a week also guar-
antees that this town will reappear next
year in Berlin. Don't miss it!

In a long letter, too long to be publish-
ed in our newsletter, Joe Gamble (Port-
land OR) argues that "[t]he very least the
editor should have done and should con-
tinue to do so in the future is to change
artificial to planned wherever and when-
ever it occurs." Had Mr. Gamble read
carefully the text he is refering to {Espe-
ranto USA 4/1998, p.8) he would have
noticed that it is a quotation from a book.
As editor of this newsletter I may not
and I will not change a single word in a
quotation. The authors I quote have the
right to express themselves as they find
appropriate, and I have the obligation to
quote what they have said and not what
I, or anybody else, think they should
have said.

zon rememori, ke ne ĉiu parolas la anglan!

year 2000 we go to Tel Aviv,
and in 2001 to Zagreb!
