Dear San Francisco State Parent,
When you have a university student in the family, you get used to
the late night phone calls which usually go something like this: "Hello,
Mom, Dad! It's me. I'm fine, and you?... Listen, I'm a little short, can
you mail me a check?" Sound familiar? Well, we at ELNA, the ex-
tended family of Esperanto students around the world, will be getting
many of those calls during the coming weeks and months, only it may
not be your own son or daughter. The calls will come from worthy
students hoping to attend the Esperanto Summer Courses at San
Francisco State University in July of 1998.
During the coming weeks and months, SFSU students and their
proxy parents will be raising money for tuition and housing and we
are asking you to help. If we can raise $10,000 by the first of July to
be added to the money previously donated by "parents" to the SFSU
Fund we will be able to enroll more students and provide more of the
Esperanto experience this summer.
If you have ever gone to university then you know that some of the
most important things you learn aren't found in the classroom. Mak-
ing new friends, living with different kinds of people, and learning to
accept ideas from all over the world are part of the total SFSU ex-
perience. Some of these things can be found working in groups and
by living in the dormitories; but without a place to go, a place to meet
people in addition to the classrooms and cafeterias, this experience
is hard to come by. That is why we want the Esperanto experience
that SFSU provides. A social experience planned by ELNA volun-
teers, managed by our SFSU faculty and used by our students.
So, when the phone rings (or you are finished reading this newslet-
ter) and a voice says, "I am calling for the students at San Francisco
State University...", we hope you'll reply, "Don't worry, I'll put a check
in the mail." Thank you.

The aligilo's here! The aligilo's
here! My registration form for the
Montreal convention arrived on Fri-
day the 13th of March, but it's a
good omen. Preparations are under
way and we're expecting a great
convention. (See page 11 for details)
A note about the dates. Friday,
July 24, will probably be a travel
day. We've planned only two official
events for Friday. One is the all-day
ELNA board meeting. All ELNA
members are welcome to observe -
but be warned, memorizing irregular
French verbs is considerably more
enthralling than board meetings. The
other Friday event will be the eve-
ning Mixer. The convention will
really start Saturday morning, July
25, as the listed dates indicate.
We're looking for people to help
make this a great convention. If you
have a talk to give, a discussion you
want to lead, a skit for the Evening
Entertainment, or if you want to help
out some other way, please contact

TREASURER'S THOUGHTS
People join ELNA for many rea-
sons: to receive the newsletter, to
participate in the Esperanto move-
ment, to help promote Esperanto,
etc. What can you as an individual
do to promote Esperanto? The first
thing, of course, is to learn it your-
self. Buy those books which will
help you learn, including good dic-
tionaries. Remember that as a mem-
ber of ELNA you now get a 10%
discount on your purchases. Some
people help themselves and others by
joining local clubs, meeting regu-
larly to practice speaking Esperanto.
Some people go on to teach the lan-
guage to others. Some help on vari-
ous committees, and others run for a
position on the board. Not everyone
has the time to actively promote
Esperanto, but would still like to do
something. Perhaps you would like
to help, but don't know how. One
I way that many people help - and
some very generously - is with do-
nations.
ELNA dues amount to about 15%
of the total income each year. In
1996/97 the net income from book
sales accounted for less than 10%) of
the income for the fiscal year, which
ends in April; less than 13% in
1995/96. There are various other
sources of income, but the majority
comes from contributions. The pur-
pose of ELNA, as any not-for-profit
organization, is not to make money.
The purpose of ELNA is to promote
Esperanto through education. That is
why we have our annual congresses
and the books sales. They are not
meant as moneymakers. Their pur-
pose is to provide you with the op-
portunity to learn Esperanto, to prac-
tice speaking Esperanto with other
people, and even to help you pro-
| mote it.
How can you contribute?  That
depends on what exactly you would
like to support. Several funds have
been established for specific pur-
poses. In other articles in this issue
you will find more descriptive details
about some of these funds... and how
you can contribute to them.
Some of the funds have restric-
tions, some do not. Some are endow-
ment funds, which means that the
principal is to be kept intact and only
the income generated may be used.
Any contributions made to these
funds is made with the assumption
that you want the same restrictions
(if any) placed on them.
ELMA GENERAL OPERATING
EXPENSES
The General Fund and income
generated from investments in this
fund are available for Central Office
expenses, as needed. If you send a
contribution with no restrictions as
to how it should be used, it will be
placed in this fund. This is a very
important source of income for
ELNA - allowing it to promote Es-
peranto.
The Gibson Endowment Fund
was originally established from
money from the sale of the house
donated by Ella Gibson. In 1988 the
ELNA Board set aside a significant
portion of that amount to establish an
endowment. Since then, other boards
have approved the use of some of the
funds. Income generated from in-
vestments in this fund is transferred
to the General Fund.
The Life Membership Fund con-
sists of the amount paid by all new
life members. Fees received are de-
posited into this fund and then amor-
tized over the remaining lifetimes of
the contributing members by an an-
nual adjustment. These amortized
amounts, as well as income gener-
ated by investments in the fund,
accrue to the General Fund. So if
you become a Life Member, instead
of renewing only for a year or two,
you will be helping ELNA for many
years to come.
The John Massey Endowment
Fund was established by a large
donation from John Massey to sup-
port the Esperanto movement. In-
come generated from investments in
this fund is transferred to the General
Fund.
ESPERANTO EDUCATION
Many of the funds are designed to
help with Esperanto Education, in
one way or another. If you would
like to support the SFSU summer
Esperanto courses, you can contrib-
ute to an endowment fund, where
only income from your contribution
will be used, or you can contribute
directly towards helping others at-
tend the courses:
The Ellen Lewis Endowment
Fund was established to honor long
time Esperantist Ellen Lewis. The
income generated from investments
in this fund is used for scholarships
to help worthy students attend the
SFSU summer Esperanto courses,
and thus is transferred to the SFSU
Fund.
The Hester Renfro Wood En-
dowment Fund was established by
Margaret Zarchy to honor her mo-
ther. The income generated from in-
vestments in this fund is used for
scholarships to help worthy students
attend the SFSU summer Esperanto
courses, and thus is transferred to the
SFSU Fund.
The SFSU Fund was established
to pay for scholarships to SFSU
summer courses for people from all
esperanto USA   2/1998
over the world. The fund receives its
money from contributions and from
the income generated by the Ellen
Lewis and the Hester Renfro Wood
Funds. Income generated from in-
vestments in this fund remain in this
fund. Cathy Schulze is the adminis-
trator.
OTHER WORTHY EDUCATIOPI
PROJECTS YOU CAN
SUPPORT
The Educational Video Fund was
established to produce the Steve
Allen video tape. It still exists to
fund future video projects. Currently
it is being used to produce the Es-
peranto, Pasporto al la tuta mondo,
a 15-lesson Esperanto course for
television using the latest direct-
method techniques. Income gener-
ated from investments in this fund
remain in this fund. Lucy Harmon is
the administrator.
The Catherine L. & William H.
Schulze Education Endowment
Fund was created in 1994 to honor
Bill and Cathy Schulze for their life-
long dedication to Esperanto educa-
tion. The goal is to establish an en-
dowment of $100,000. Income gen-
erated from investments In this fund
provides money to help further edu-
cational projects of ELNA. Ellen
Eddy and a small group of people
helping her determine which projects
qualify for help.
OTHER ELNA PROJECTS
There are other ways ELNA pro-
motes the Esperanto language. You
too can help:
The Thompson Fund was estab-
lished with a donation from Eugene
Thompson to help deserving
"young" Esperantists attend Espe-
ranto meetings. This fund has been
used to partially underwrite travel
expenses for attending SFSU as well
as congresses. Each year the Espe-
ranto Travel Service donates a per-
centage of its profits to this fund.
Income generated from Investments
in this fund remain in this fund. Lucy
Harmon is the administrator.
The Glenny Fund was established
to place copies of the David Richard-
son's Esperanto: Learning and Us-
ing the International Language into
libraries. Income generated from in-
vestments in this fund remain in this
fund. Contact the Central Office if
you would like to make use of this
fund.
The History Fund was initiated by
Gigi Harabagiu to eventually pro-
duce a book on the U.S. Esperanto
movement. Income generated from
investments in this fund remain in
this fund.
The Publishing Fund was estab-

lished from donations received to
publish Peter Benson's Comprehen-
sive Esperanto-English Dictionary
and Montagu Butler's Step by Step in
Esperanto. Currently 50% of the
profits from the sale of the books
ELNA publishes continue to build
this fund, which ELNA uses to fi-
nance future publishing projects. In-
come generated from investments In
this fund remain in this fund.
TAKING THE STEP TO HELP
FINANCIALLY
Without the generous support of
many people, ELNA annual dues
would have to be much higher, we
would have to charge more for such
things as book, tapes, disks and con-
gress fees, and we would not be do-
ing much to promote Esperanto.

INVESTING SN THE ESPERANTO MOVEMENT
(Part 1)
There is an old waterfront saying
that "whatever goes around, comes
around". John Massey, whom while
President in 1980 I appointed Com-
missioner for Testamentary Affairs,
recently retired from professional
life and resigned that ELNA com-
mission; and now president David
Wolff has appointed me ELNA's
new Commissioner for Testamentary
Affairs. So the job I talked John into
in 1980 has now become my job, and
my first duty will be to produce up-
dated information on how ELNA
members may invest in the Espe-
ranto movement.
You can financially support a wor-
thy cause in many ways. In this and
future articles some of those ways
will be explained, so that you may
select the method best suited to your
own circumstances and wishes. This
| first article deals with simple cash
contributions and outlines ELNA's
various special funds. Future articles
will explore other methods using
trusts, donation of stocks, or insur-
ance to support ELNA's activities.
SIMPLE CASH CONTRIBUTIONS
The simplest way to donate is to
make a cash contribution. Such cash
donations are advantageous both to
you and to ELNA; the advantage to
you is that you may deduct your con-
tribution on your income tax return
for the year in which it is paid, up to
the limits imposed by IRS, and
advantageous to ELNA in that the
contribution is available for immedi-
ate use. Make your check payable to
"ELNA", and send it to ELNA (PO
Box 1129, El Cerrito CA 94530).
Your contribution will be acknow-
ledged and placed in ELNA's gene-
ral fund, unless you specify other-
wise.
ELNA'S FUNDS - (How you can
decide how your donation is to be
used)
Elsewhere in this issue you will
find an informative article written by
ELNA's Treasurer, Anna Bennett,
outlining the various funds within
ELNA and their goals. I will merely
list them here as you will find all ne-
cessary information in Anna's arti-
cle:
The General Fund, The Life Mem-
bership Fund, The Ellen Lewis En-
dowment Fund, The Gibson Endow-
ment Fund, The John Massey En-
dowment Fund, The Hester Renfro
Wood Endowment Fund, The Cath-
erine L. & William H. Schulze Edu-
cation Endowment Fund, The SFSU
Fund, The Educational Video Fund
("Pasporto Fund"), The William
GlennyFund, The History Fund, The
Publishing Fund.
The capital of all of these funds is
invested by ELNA's Capital Invest-
ment Committee under sound, fis-
cally conservative rules which limit
risk, as the basic concept is to con-
serve ELNA's capital. ELNA's ma-
jor investments are in corporate
bonds and obligations rated "A" or
better by Standard & Poors or "AA"
or better by Moody's, fixed-interest
preferred stocks, Certificates of De-
posit and Treasury Notes. ELNA has
never lost one cent on its invest-
ments, and currently enjoys an aver-
age yield of 7.36% overall.
THE PRIVACY OF ANONYMOUS
DONORS IS GUARANTEED BY
ELNA
Your donation to ELNA deserves
a public acknowledgment, and may
serve as an encouragement to others
to do likewise. Nevertheless if you
prefer anonymity, you may be sure
that your wish will be honored. The
name of a donor who wishes to be
anonymous will be known only to
the President, Treasurer, and Com-
missioner for Testamentary Affairs.
All financial details of will and trust
transactions are handled in the
strictest privacy.
OTHER MEANS OF INVESTING
IN THE ESPERANTO MOVE-
MENT THROUGH A  GIFT TO
ELNA
You may bequeath money,
property, stocks or any other assets
to ELNA through your will or living
trust distribution. This is a fairly
simple matter to arrange. Although
preparing any legal document such
as a will or trust should, for your
own protection, be done by a
qualified attorney or similar
practitioner, I will be available to
consult with them and you as
necessary.
Gifts of appreciated stock and/or
real estate may be made to ELNA at
any time. The beneficial tax
consequences of such gifts will be
explored in more detail in a
following article; but in short, you
can avoid capital gains taxes and
gain a substantial tax reduction by
making such a gift in the proper way.
In a future article we will explore
forms of living trusts, charitable re-
mainder trusts, and insurance trusts
through which you may provide con-
tinuing financial assistance to Es-
peranto.

WHAT IF?
What If the summer Esperanto work-
shop never existed? Can you Imagine a
world without summer Esperanto clas-
ses at SFSU? What would be the level
of your Esperanto speaking and writing
abilities? Which Esperanto friends
would you have never met? What Es-
peranto experiences would be missing
from you memories? What new truths
about people from other countries
would be missing from your reference
bank? What visual images would be im-
possible to conjure up? What hint of re-
membered foods would be missing from
you taste buds? What letters, telephone
calls, e-mail messages would never
have been made or sent? What photos
would be missing from your albums?
It's often fun to play "What if..." But
fortunately for all of us, the workshops
at SFSU do exist and have for almost 30
years. Over a thousand students have
been the recipients of the multiple bene-
fits of these courses. Some very impres-
sive ones attended through the help of
your generous donations to the SFSU
Student Scholarship Fund.
Grant Goodall, present ELNA board
member, past ELNA vice-president, and
one of the Esperanto professors at
SFSU has these thoughts on the results
of a student scholarship.
"When I first attended the Esperanto
program at SFSU, I had just graduated
from high school, I had a longstanding
interest in Esperanto, but I must admit
that there were a lot other things in life
which excited me too. The SFSU pro-
gram gave me the chance to spend three
uninterrupted weeks completely de-
voted to Esperanto. I Improved my
command of the language, learned a lot
about its history and literature, and got
to know dozens of my fellow students,
many of whom I am still in touch with
today.
If I hadn't been offered a scholarship,
I probably wouldn't have gone, and if I
hadn't gone, I might not have remained
active in Esperanto. There are many
young people in the same situation
today, and any financial support we are
able to offer can make a big difference
in their lives."
Another scholarship recipient, present
ELNA vice-president Derek Roff eva-
luates his experiences in the following:
"When I attended my first Esperanto-
Kursaro at SFSU, I knew little about the
language and nothing about the Mov-
ado. I had a vague interest in interna-
tional things, and thought visiting a for-
eign country (a categoiy which, for me,
included San Francisco) would be fan.
I found much more than I bargained for.
I learned a good bit of Esperanto and
something about the Movado. But what
really got me motivated was the incredi-
ble group of people that the course
gathered. I was eager to come back
again.
I did return, and became even more
enthusiastic about Esperanto. I learned
enough of the language to use it Inde-
pendently. Returning from the second
year of classes, I could read interna-
tional magazines and understand the
few books that I had. But living in New
Mexico, I was isolated from Esperanto
life. There was nothing to keep me in-
terested in the language and the Mov-
ado, except my desire to return to SFSU
next year. I was able to return because
of generous scholarship support from
ELNA members. My experience with
the outstanding teachers and interna-
tional student body at the Kursaro con-
vinced me that I wanted to do more than
learn the language as a hobby. SFSU in-
spired me to learn Esperanto to the
greatest extent of my abilities. I wanted
to become actively involved Interna-
tionally and be a contributor to the
Movado. I have been able to fulfill, to
some extent, these continuing lifetime
goals. I worked in the UEA Central
Office, visited world congresses, taught
Esperanto in New Mexico, served on
the ELNA Estraro, and perhaps most
exciting, returned to SFSU as a profes-
sor. None of this would have been pos-
sible without the scholarship support for
SFSU, which allowed me to learn Espe-
ranto profoundly enough to make a con-
tribution, and inspired me to want to be g
a part of this amazing international
phenomenon."
And a recent recipient of a SFSU
scholarship, Jennifer Korp, one of the
young, talented actors of our work-in-
progress educational video, Pasporto al
la tuta mondo has these comments:
"It was at SFSU in 1995 that I met
other Esperantists for the first time. My
earlier contact with Esperanto was lim-
ited to only a two-week run-through of
most of the ten-lesson postal course. So
I actually knew just the basic grammar
and nothing of the 'samideaneco' of the
Esperantic family circle. When I ar-
rived, I was happy to find something I
had only dreamed of, people from many
countries, living together, learning
about each other's cultures and enjoying
them. From that moment on, I felt right
at home and never again wanted to
leave my new-found family. During the
first year of my 'Esperantisteco' I felt a
great gulf between my life among many
Esperantists during the course and my (
life at school and home, where Esperan-
tists were as rare as pears on a peach
tree. But I have been gradually able to
integrate these various parts of my life,
teaching Esperanto, and working to-
wards my B.A. in Esperantic Studies.
Never before had anyone expressed so
great a faith in me and helped me so
much as at SFSU. Because of getting
my start In the program of courses
there, I am looking forward to a lifelong
career of activism for our international
language."
What if there were no scholarship for
Grant? What if Derek couldn't take the
Esperanto classes because of lack of
money? What if Jennifer didn't receive
a SFSU scholarship? Wc don't always
get to see the direct results of our don-
ations to a cause we believe in. Think
about this when you write out your
check for the San Francisco State Uni-
versity' Student Fund.

instrui la internacian lingvon Espe-
ranto, Pasporto at la tuta mondo je
la fino de februaro. Tiuj, kiuj mendis
kaj ne ricevis, bv. kontakti la centran
oficejon. Multaj jam ricevis, kaj kel-
kaj jam raportis al ni ke ili ĝuas kaj
aprezas la rezulton. Espereble ankaŭ
vi tre ĝuos la videobendojn kiam vi
vidos ilin. EC se vi estas sperta esper-
antisto, la lecionoj distros vin, car ili
progresas dramece ene de amuza in-
trigo. Nia Esperanta kulturo vid-
eblas. Kent Jones el Chicago, estrar-
ano de ELNA, dissendis ret-mesaĝon
ĉirkaŭ la mondo dirante ke la video-
bendoj tiom amuzis lin, ke "li anko-
raŭ ne ĉesis ridi".
Se vi ankoraŭ ne mendis aŭ sendis
fmancan subtenon, ni petas ke vi tuj
faru tion car ni nun kolektas monon
por la sekvaj lecionoj. Ciuj 4 lecio-
noj estos montritaj ĉe la Tut-Kalifor-
nia Esperanto-Konferenco en Santa
Barbara en aprilo kaj ĉe la Nord-
Okcidenta Esperanto-Konferenco en
Tacoma je la fmo de majo. Kaj
kompreneble, ili estos montritaj ĉe la
ELNA-kongreso en Montrealo, Ka-
nado en julio kaj la ĉe la Universala
Kongreso en Montpeliero, Francio.

Money is unfortunately very im-
portant in most of life and all of dra-
ma. Love is also very important, and
without all the love and dedication
that has gone into this project, the
great outpouring of financial help we
have received would not have been
able to get us even this far.
HOW MUCH HAS THIS
PROJECT COST SO FAR?
We have spent $86,604.52 for the
first lessons. We actually filmed 4/4
lessons, and have produced 4 com-
plete lessons, leaving the first half of
Lesson 5 waiting to be edited along
with the yet-to-be-filmed remainder
of lesson 5. $86,604.52 divided by
AVa means that each lesson has cost
$20,377.53. This is amazingly close
to our projected budget of $20,000.
00 per lesson. The money went
primarily for professional
photography, lighting, use of an air-
conditioned sound-proof studio, and
a professional drama coach, director
and editor. Without using paid
professionals, we cannot produce a
professional product. Approximately
$5,500.00 covered the out-of-pocket
expenses of the actors and other
volunteers for travel, lodging and
food expenses. Several of the actors
paid their own living ex-
penses while attending classes
at San Francisco State Uni-
versity.
I have made a rough es-
timate of the amount of time
donated to this project by our
dedicated         Esperanto
volunteers. The actors - Miko
Sloper, Leonora Torres, Ĵenja
Korp, Mingchi Chien,
Stephen Boddington, Guy
Menahem, Katsunori Syozi, Vesna
Rogulja Heyman, Lana Schlafer,
Elsa Raola, and Steven Wagenseller
contributed altogether about 168
days of an average 8 hours for a total
of 1344 hours. Our other chief
helpers - Natalie Sera, Steve Belant,
Ellen Eddy, Bill Harmon, Ionel
OneJ, Duncan Charters, and Derek
Roff donated approximately 185
equivalent days of work or 1488
hours, for a total of 2832 volunteer
hours. If we had paid these volun-
teers even $10 an hour, that would
have cost another $28,320.00! And
this does not include Edwin Grobe,
author Paul Gubbins, or yours truly
and all the other people who have
given time and thought to this
project.
Our audacious project is suc-
ceeding only because of extremely
generous support; financial, physical,
and psychological. We have a right
to pat ourselves on the back - for a
little while - before we start the next
stage of our efforts. What is needed
most right now is money; donations
of any size, advance purchases of the
full set of lessons, purchases of the
four already completed. The price for
the first four lessons is $85; for the
entire set $325. The price includes
sending the lessons to you with a
workbook clarifying the lessons, and
the text of the video.
HOW MUCH MONEY DO WE
NEED NOW?
We hope to film 5lA lessons this
summer. For filming, editing and
sending out the new lessons we will
need $21,000 x 5.5, or $115,500. In
order to have enough money to
proceed, we have petitioned the
ELNA Estraro to loan the project
$50,000. With your continuing help
we will be able to pay off the loan if
it is approved.

The Summer Esperanto Program at
San Francisco State University (SFSU)
is almost thirty years old. Each year,
the leaders add something new to
make learning more fun and more ef-
fective. And the program becomes
more complex. About ten years ago,
the students decided to form a student
association, to support the program
and especially the professors who are
very overburdened. This group, dub-
bed the Esperanto-Studintoj de San-
Fransisko (ESSF), strives to take care
of as many of the out of class details as
possible during the class program.
ESSF has raised money for scholar-
ships, organized welcome nights and
graduation parties, and worked with
local esperantists to coordinate field
trips and local sight seeing.
Perhaps the most important contribu-
tion of ESSF is producing the daily
Esperanto student bulletin during the
classes. The bulletin includes all the
important announcements and infor-
mation that students need to know. It
includes poems, stories, news about
the movado and vignettes about the
students. It gives students a chance to
practice their language learning. And it
unburdens the professors of transmit-
ting much daily information to the
students.
Anyone who has ever been an Espe-
ranto student at SFSU is automatically
a member of ESSF. Everyone else is
welcome to contribute in whatever
way they wish. Often, ESSF is the
only source of funds for special needs
and incidental expenses, besides taking
money out of the pockets of one of the
professors. If you would like to con-

Yeong has initiated the so-called
Kampanjo 2000, which I would like
to present to you, the members and
friends of ELNA, both in general as
a campaign and specifically in re-
lation to ELNA's tasks as a national
organization.
The basic goals of Kampanjo 2000
are threefold: raise the level of or-
ganization and ideas within the Espe-
ranto community; raise the prestige
of the international language; influ-
ence international life.
Among the ways of raising the
level of organization within a non-
profit corporation is to ensure that
the office equipment is quite up-to-
date and in good working order. I am
happy to report to you all that ELNA
is in fine shape now with regard to
computers and computer peripherals.
Somewhat  over  a year  ago,  we
Ibought a Pentium computer which
was then nearly state-of-the-art, and
have recently bought a new laser
printer to replace our old Okidata,
which was on its last legs. We also
have a nice Macintosh computer sys-
tem, which was generously donated
by ELNA member Stanley Glass.
But we have stretched ELNA's bud-
get to the maximum: there is no
more money allotted to buying office
equipment. Therefore I am hereby
making an appeal to you to help us
out if you can. Our photocopy ma-
chine is an embarrassing dinosaur,
which makes inferior quality copies
even during the rare moments when
it functions without jamming. So if
you or an organization you belong to
can donate a photocopy machine, or
would like to contribute money for
ELNA's eventual purchase of such a
machine, we would be most grateful!
pThis would simultaneously reduce
the level of frustration in the Central
Office and give a more professional
look to letters and documents copied
in the CO.
As to the level of ideas within
ELNA, I would like to report that the
Publicity Committee has been con-
sidering various methods of inform-
ing the public of the current state and
future possibilities of Esperanto, and
so we are about to embark on an am-
bitious campaign of paid advertising,
direct mailing and increased World-
Wide Web presence. I thank the sev-
eral ELNA members who suggested
slogans for the coming campaign.
All Esperantists can contribute to
the increased prestige of Esperanto
simply by using the language in
whatever context arises. Using Pas-
porta Servo to find lodging and then
telling friends about the experience;
writing and publishing lyric poetry;
discovering obscure facts about dis-
tant places through the Esperanto
press, and using those facts in arti-
cles on the internet; finding true
friends or even life partners in the
Esperanto community; learning a
third language based on the propae-
deutic preparation of Esperanto;
writing to politicians, media repre-
sentatives and school board members
in support of the international lan-
guage: all of these add prestige to
Esperanto as other people hear about
the developments. Many local librar-
ies do not yet have Esperanto books
on their shelves, and most would be
happy to accept a donation of an in-
troductory textbook or dictionary;
this could provide another source of
Esperanto's increased prestige.
As to influencing international life,
well, perhaps this is a subject for an-
other day. Stay tuned!

SYR 3 Sonic Youth/Jim O'Rourke
The three tracks of this CD are nam-
ed Invito al Cielo, Hungara Vivo and
Radio-amatoroj. The sparse liner notes
are written in Esperanto. But the music
has nothing to do with Esperanto, for it
is mostly instrumental: a stream of
electric guitar, synthesizer, percussion,
found sounds, trumpet etc. make a kind
of post-industrial soundscape which is
rather unlike anything you have ever
heard anywhere. It is obviously creat-
ive, and will be of interest to anybody
who longs for unexplored aural ter-
ritory. There is almost no rhythm; this
is not dance music! The little bit of
singing is in English, and sounds like
voices from an ecstatic psychedelic
parallel universe. This is not casual
background music; it invites close lis-
tening, which will be rewarded by a
journey through uncharted waters.
While the goal of this disk is probably
not transcendental beauty, it is intellec-
tually interesting throughout, and
somehow oddly compelling. I have en-
joyed listening to this album several
times already, and foresee continued
enjoyment.
SYR3 is in a series of disks which use
exotic languages (that is, non-English)
for liner notes. SYR1 is in French,
SYR2 uses Dutch. Sonic Youth has
generated a moderate amount of ex-
posure to Esperanto for fans of esoteric
music. Give this disk a listen and show
them some support. You might even
discover a new realm of art.

Goncalo Neves: portugalo, naskita
en 1964; esperantistiĝis en 1987.

de Paul Neergaard? Eble jes, sed ne
por nia ĉi-okaza ĝuado.
Neves verkis sian unuan tekston en
1989. Li gajnadas literaturajn pre-
miojn ekde 1991. Cu li vere estas
homo tiom merita literature?
Jen kolekto de naŭ rakontoj por via
juĝo, aranĝitaj laŭ ordo de verkado.
La unua, Vivaĉo (1989), temas pri
vivado malplaĉa, teda, en granda
urbo. "... muĝoj najbaraj, infanoj kri-
ĉaj, petolaj;... senfinaj aleoj da aŭtoj,
busoj, motorcikloj, kamionetoj, ĉiuj
furiozaj, ronrone, gasospute, trum-
pete..." Tiel plu iradas la priskribo de
la hejmurbo, frapante ĉe ni laŭ ritmoj
ene de la loko mem. Ni daure legas
tra intrigo spegulanta la etoson, ĝis
fino ne tute originala sed tiumomente
kontentige trafa.
La dua, Gorilaĵoj (1990): batalpre-
paras sin, unu kontraŭ la alia, goril-
estroj Geogro kaj Sodomo. Cu pli
gravas la invado al la koweitalo aŭ la
misa manko de akuzativo en titolo de
artikolo en gorilgazeto? Kaj kiujn en
la reala mondo prirolas la goriles-
troj? Provu diveni antaŭ ol trovi klar-
igon fine de la libro.
Antaŭen. La kvara, Ekskurso
(1991). Ene de ĉi "sciencfikcieca sa-
tireto" oni trovas skrib-rulon jenan:
"Kiam olim la shelilaj pitekoj initis
voble hushifro la silvoj.. " Cu vi su-
fiĉe koleriĝas pri tiaj neologismado
kaj eventuala reformprojekto? Ne
lasu altiĝi la sangopremon. Legu la
ruton en ties kunteksto kaj trovu tra-
dukon librofme.
Kaj la naua? Inico (el la "nova
epoko" de la aŭtoro). "Knabe? Mi ne
knabis tiam. Mi ne kapis knabe. Ne
plu..." Kvankam la legaĵo iom malfa-
cilas, ĉi tie preskaŭ ĉiuj vortoj estas
fundamentaj, lerte apudmetitaj.
Pli kaj pli eksperimentaj fariĝas la
rakontoj en la evoluado de Neves
kiel aŭtoro. Ci-legante, ĉu vi jam for-
timiĝis de la libro? Ne tro haste an-
taŭjuĝu. Rigardu en tiu librofma sek-
cio nomata Aldone. Tie vi trovos,
interalie, informojn pri la unua kaj
postaj aperoj de ĉiu aparta rakonto;
klarigojn pri ĉies temo kaj specifaj
dubindaĵoj; eĉ klarigon pri la deveno
de la libro-titolo Kompreni, anstataŭ
la pli frua Permesu. Post Aldone
estas mallonga Glosareto.

koj. Piĉ asertas ke Neves "havas sian
propran personan stilon pli-malpli ne
kompreneblan kun alies stilo", krom
eble ke ekzistas dikcia parenceco
kun la kroato Ivo Rotkviĉ, verkisto
konata kiel "la plej baroke bunta stil-
isto en la tuta lingvo". (Laŭ Reto
Rossetti en Spegulo de Esperantaj
stiloj)
Pli fruan berajon (Sur la linio) de
kun-iberiano Georgo Kamaĉo multaj
inter ni priplendegis (inter aliaj, la
kaptitaj superanivelaj studantoj en la
Esperanta kursaro ĉe la Stata Univer-
sitato en San Francisco, 1992). Kel-
kaj diris ke tiu Kamaĉo rajtas litera-
turumi laŭplaĉe, sed li devintus al-
menaŭ klarigi al ni la signifojn de
siaj strangaj vortoj, sintaksajoj kaj
misteraj aludoj. Se tio ja estis manko
ĉe tiu alia libro, Goncalo Neves sufi-
ĉe evitas tiun akuzon en la nuna re-
cenzatajo. Li ne tut-tute klarigas
ĉion, kvazaŭ li priskribus por ko-
mencantoj aŭpostkomencantoj. Sed
tiu sekcio Aldone sufiĉe helpas al la
sperta esperantisto sciive ĝui la naŭ
diversecajn rakontojn.
Cu Esperanto-verkisto ne rajtas
eksperimenti, pro timo ke eventuale
oni fortimigus novajn esperantistojn

studas cefe por legi el tiaj verkistoj.
La celoj estas alispecaj. Kaj novaj
interesatoj ne aliras Esperanton por
legi el Piĉ, Kamaĉo kaj Neves. Sed
tiaj verkoj disponeblas por la eventu-
alaj frandontoj, serĉantaj cerbajn de-
fiojn. Se vere ekzistas risko fortimigi
iun, forkaŝu do tiajn librojn de ties
vidtereno kaj certigu ke troviĝu nur
verkoj de Baghy kaj Piron-Valon
(kiujn mi certe ne malestimas) kaj si-
milaj.
Sed se vi estas spertulo kuraĝa,
provu la aliajn, inkiuzive ĉi tiun
Kompreni. Vi nenion malgajnos!

MONTREAL!

This year the ELNA national con-
vention is in Montreal July 25th
through July 27th. If you've ever
been to a Jarkongreso you know that
it should be lots of fun. If you've
never been to one before, I would
like you to consider Montreal. It will
be a rare opportunity for us to meet
outside of the United States. This
will be only the third ELNA conven-
tion outside of the United States, the
first in a French speaking city (the
second largest French-speaking city
in the world at that!).
This year's convention will also be
special in that it is part of NAKE (la
Nord-Amerika Kongreso de Espe-
ranto) with meetings for National
and Youth Esperanto organizations
from the US, Canada, and Quebec.
That means more people, more activ-
ities, more things to do and in gen-
peral more fun. It will also be espe-
cially welcoming to USEJ members
(that is those ELNA members 27 and
under) - who receive a discounted
convention fee. This year the con-
vention fee includes the banquet and
a tour of Montreal besides all the
convention materials.

SOME CONGRESS DETAILS
Normand Fleury has found a great
hotel with amazing prices (55 Can-
adian dollars [-40 USD] per night
for one or two persons), but the hotel
manager cannot guarantee rooms at
this price after June 30. Therefore it
is crucial that you book your room
before then. Call the hotel directly,
and be sure to state that you will be
attending the Esperanto convention.

From Menton to Toulon, the Riviera
including Nice and Monaco are justly
famous for their spectacular scenery
and mild climate. We start here before
proceeding to Provence, which
combines historic sites with the best
food in France. Lilacs and perfumes;
spices, food and wine; the special light
and atmosphere that gave the
impressionists their inspiration, and the
lovely warm countryside of Southern
France. Grasse, Aix-en-Provence,
Avignon, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gaugin!

Exploration of this theme at the UK
will enable a better under-standing of
the culture of this region of the world,
and will simultaneously explore the role
of our own intercultural bridge,
Esperanto.
Montpellier is one of the lesser-known
jewels of France. And very French it is,
from the battlements of the ancient tityj
to the walls of the newer Greek-
appearing Antigone. The new addition,
known locally as the "Anti-Gone" was
constructed as a reaction against the
ultramodern gigantic indoor shopping
mall known as the "Polygone."
Oh, so very French!

Ekzotika Francio - 9-16 aŭgusto
From Montpellier through
Narbonne to Carcassone, the double-
walled fortress town which offers
insights into 15 centuries of turmoil. On
through Albi, the birthplace of
Toulouse Lautrec and the hilltop town
of Cordes into the Dordogne River
Valley, lined with medieval castles and
chateaux; also the caves where Cro-
magnon man lived. We visit elegant
Bordeaux. This lively cosmopolitan city
features the best wine in the country
and some of the best examples of 18th
century architecture in the nation.
We end in Paris after going
through Tours and the chateau region.
France is delightful country to visit, and
traveling with Esperantists from around,
the world adds a special je-ne-sais-quoi'
to the trip.
