ELNA UPDA TE Quarterly newsletter published by the Esperanto League for north America 3/1997 P.O. Box 1129 • El Cerrito CA 94530 • USA * ISSN 1081 -6224 REPORT ON ELNA'S 45TH CONVENTION... San Francisco is often rated in various surveys as the most desirable tourist location in America. So we were quite fortunate to have arranged a convention this past July 11- 15 at the conference center of the University of San Francisco, an amazingly beautiful campus on a hilltop just north of Golden Gate Park in the center of the city. Partici- pants were treated to fabulous panoramic vistas of this lovely city, including the famous Golden Gate Bridge. The convention was among the liveliest ever in ELNA's history, due to the inspired guidance of the local congress commit- tee, who had arranged an Oratorical Contest which created some remarkably interesting displays of talent. There were also engaging discussions of the convention theme: "Esperantio: Village or Continent?" as well as useful sessions on improving local clubs, teaching Esperanto, inter-American activities, Esperanto in the internet, USA language policy, art, astronomy, graphology, publicity, etc. The ELNA bookservice fared rather well at the convention, as many participants took advantage of the chance to see the books from the ELNA catalog first-hand. [For a copy of our complete book catalog please send $2.00 to the address in the letterhead. Those purchasing the catalog will receive a coupon worth $2.00 off their next order. Those interested in seeing our online catalog should look at the site: www.esperanto-usa . org/books .html.] The con- vention had an unusually international list of participants, for quite a few Esperantists from Europe stopped off in San Francisco en route to Adelaide to take part in the UK there, while others stayed on after spending three weeks at the San Francisco State University while attending the inten- sive Esperanto course. During most evenings of the convention there was a pleasant "babilejo" where partici- pants could sit and chat while sipping tea and nibbling cookies. The first public showing of the new video course generated great interest and enthusiasm. The Entertainment Evening featured dance, music, jokes and even a full-length play. As usual, the most enjoyable part of the convention was the chance to see old friends, make new ones and generally experience a few days of Esperantio in this gorgeous setting. ... AND ON THE 53RD l/K The last week in July was an ideal time for the Interncia Junulara Kongreso, because all prices for everything in Italy go up in August, as does the temperature. So from July 24-31 almost 500 young Esperantists from all around the world gathered in Assisi, Italy for the 53rd UK. This famous city, which is normally the object of contemplative serious pilgrimage, witnessed a burst of frantic youthful energy the likes of which it had never dreamed! The discotheque blasted until dawn; waterpistol fights domi- nated the courtyard; public displays of affection and rampant flirtation were excessive even by Italian standards; and the sheer joy of conversation was vigorous and cease- less. Wow! The UK for next year is planned for the seaside resort of Rijeka, Croatia. Stay tuned for details. 4TH AUTUMN ESPERANTO GATHERING During the long weekend of October 11-13 there will be a fun gathering in the woods of Okema, Vermont. In past years, participants have enjoyed the beautiful mountain resort, the friendly atmosphere, the international roster of participants and, of course, the fun programs. This year's Autuna Renkontiĝo Esperanta (ARE) promises to be especially worthwhile, due to the participation of Claude Piron, the famous and influential writer. There will be Esperanto courses at two levels; the beginning course will use the famous "MAZI" video series. There will also be many lectures, cultural presentations and excursions into the beautiful surroundings. The fees are a modest $15, but students and unemployed or retired persons pay only $5. Lodging is arranged with a number of options from hostel ($15/night)to resort apartments ($75/night). Although this is not an official ELNA event, it is a good chance to experience the international use of Esperanto, as Canadians will be there in abundance, and likely a few Europeans as well. ELNA'S ELECTRONIC BULLETIN BEGINS Those ELNA members who already gave their e-mail addresses to the Central Office recently received the first copy of the "ELNA Elektronika Bulteno" (EEB). This is not intended as a replacement for this humble bulletin, nor for the official newsletter Esperanto-USA (which will soon be back in production!), but rather as an informal way of cheaply and quickly sending out information to those members (and others who are interested) who have access to e-mail. Anybody wishing to subscribe to the EEB should send e-mail to elnabulletin@poboxes .com with the word "subscribe" as the "Subject:" line. SEX & THE ATLANTA OLfMPIC GAMES When it comes to the sexual freedom of its citizens, the United States is one of the Western world's most conserva- tive countries. The government tells its citizens with whom they may have sexual relations and which practices are permitted. Extramarital sex between consenting adults is forbidden in most New England states, in Nevada, Ne- braska, Kansas and almost all Southern states. In Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, New Mexico and North Carolina, it is unlawful for unmarried people to live together. Georgia has more than ten sexual practices on the forbidden list, as well as "normal" sexual congress between unmarried people. Before the Olympic Games in Atlanta, there was a debate in the state legislature on whether or not to post lists of forbidden sexual practices in hotel rooms; the idea was dropped when someone pointed out that since many visitors to the Games would not have a reading knowledge of English, the authorities would have to resort to pictures and diagrams. {World Press Review Sept 1997) [This is another weighty and crucial dilemma which Esperanto could help avoid, -ed.] ESPERANTIST IN THE IRANIAN GOVERNMENT Dr. Hossein Namazi was recently appointed Minister of Economic and Financial Affairs for the Islamic Republic of Iran. He first studied Esperanto in 1992 at the Beheshti University in Tehran. At that time he wrote a quite positive letter to the cultural ministry, expressing his opinion that Esperanto is humanity's best means of communication. Now that he has taken office, he continues to support Esperanto in his function as the first Iranian Esperantist who has held this level of position in the government. (from M. Reza Torabi, by way of Even to/s interredaktora listo) EUROPEAN ESPERANTO UNION From May 16-19 representatives of 22 European countries attended the meeting of the EEU in Stuttgart, Germany to discuss the future role of Esperanto in official and educa- tional contexts. They issued a formal resolution, which (in part) recognised "that the absence of a democratic solution to the problem of direct human communication between European citizens constitutes an impediment to the prog- ress of the construction of a unified Europe" and also declared "that the diversity of cultures, ideas and languages constitutes a great richness, but with the express condition that it is accompanied by principles based in respect for fundamental human rights and in a real possibility of egalitarian communication for everyone; that the study of the planned internationl language Esperanto, followed by the possibility of studying one or more ethnic languages, is the most appropriate way to attain egalitarian communica- tion for everybody with the deepest reciprocal understand- ing." (Esperanto Actitalites June 1997) VIDEO TO TEACH ESPERANTO FnOGnESSES' The first four lessons of the series Pasporto al la Tuta Mondo to teach Esperanto by television will be ready before the end of 1997. Advance orders for the first four lessons are priced at $85, and advance orders for the entire series of 15 lessons are priced at $300. The actors come from six different nations: Father - Miko SLOPER (USA) Mother - Leonora TORRES (Mexico) Son - Stephen BODDINGTON (England) 1st Daughter - CHIEN Mingchi (China) 2nd Daughter - Jennifer KORP (USA) Guest - Guy MENAHEM (USA) Reporter - SYOZI Katsunori (Japan) Shopkeeper - Vesna Roguluja HEYMAN (Croatia) Detective - Steve WAGENSELLER (USA) The series uses the most modern theory and techniques of language teaching. The highly structured and carefully crafted teaching method will convince professional teach- ers and educators that Esperantists, too, can create, and not merely adapt, appropriate teaching materials. At the World Esperanto Convention in Adelaide, Australia the Board of Directors of the international Esperanto organization Universala Esperanto-Asocio decided to place the project under its auspices; and the Esperanto League for North America (ELNA) is now seeking as many donations and advance orders as possible in order to facilitate filming of the next five lessons during the summer of 1998. The name of every contributor of at least $500 will be shown in the screen credits. Send all payments for advance orders or donations to: ELNA-TV Course Project, P.O.
