After outstanding National Conven-
tions in Detroit and San Francisco, we
think we have another excellent one
coming up in 1998. Montreal has invited
us to join the Canadian national
convention (as well as the Canadian and
Montreal youth group conventions) next
year, Saturday, July 25 to Monday, July
27. We are very pleased that Nor-
mando Fleury will organize matters
from the local side. Normando has a
great deal of experience with con-
ventions: he has arranged several con-
ventions and the highly-applauded
Okemo meetings for the past three years.
Watch your mail for details.
It's getting close to the end of the year,
which means it's time to renew. You
should have already received your
renewal form in the mail (if not, please
contact the Central Office or me
immediately). I hope you still want to
support ELNA and our efforts to spread
Esperanto. And perhaps you will con-
sider upgrading your membership from
a regular membership to Sustaining or
Patron. Every bit of backing helps us
keep up our work. (And if you've
already sent in your check with just a
regular membership, send the difference
in to the CO with a note that you want to
help more.)
For example, we have just finished
appointing a Publicity Committee. We
finally have a group of volunteers
specifically tasked with getting the word
out! Previously we've had a variety of
individual efforts, or some work from
the badly-overworked Central Office,
or—too often—nothing at all. If you have
real-world publicity experience, and
you'd like to help, please contact Grant
Qoodall (ggoodall@utep. edu or
check the Adresaro for other addresses).
We have also appointed the Nominat-
ing Committee for next year's elections.
If you want to recommend someone for
nomination, contact David K Jordan
(dkjordan@ucsd.edu). You can also
directly nominate someone by
submitting five signatures from ELNA
members to the Nominating Committee
by February 15.
Congratulations to Kent Jones for
his successful conference call with
Esperanto instructor Boris Kolker and
the upcoming call with Michele
Gregory. And Sherry Wells has con-
ducted a conference call between local
groups. E-mail is not the only way to
practice your Esperanto with many
people at once; I think the telephone will
be used more and more to help bring our
scattered membership together.
Our thanks to an anonymous donor
who gave $30,000 earlier this year. We
goofed and managed to leave this out of
our annual list of donors, but we do
appreciate it very much.
Thanks to everyone who helped at the
Boston International Festival: Steve
and Lucy Brewer, Martha Pauig,
Donner Lohnes, and especially Bill
Harris. We gave out 150 brochures, 180
Handy-Dandies, and we ran out of
Lesson Is!

English vs. Esperanto
Tuj post kiam la antaŭa numero de
Esperanto USA iris al la presejo atin-
gis nin e-poŝte la jena mesaĝo, kiun
ni aperigas sen ajna ŝanĝo: "Leganta
la jurnalojn de la ELNA, mi ne povas
ignori ke la lingvo de la rubrikoj es-
tas plej parte en la angla kaj ne Espe-
ranto. Kial ĉi tiu fakto estas vera?
Oni pensus ke Esperantistoj, kiel
Lojbanistoj, ne scipovas legi ilian
lingvon! Mi nur estas
komencanto kaj ne parolas
ad skribas esperanton flue,
sed mi certe povas legi ĝin
bone. El Pop u I a Cinio ne
estas en la ĉina, kaj Monato
ne estas en la nederlanda —
kial la ELNA skribas en la
angla?"
Ricevinte la antaŭan nu-
meron de Esperanto USA,
la aŭtoro de la ĉi-supraj
linioj sendube havis malagrablan sur-
prizon, se enkalkuli ke ĝi estas plej-
parte en la angla. Ankaŭ en ĉi
numero la angla ne mankas kaj ne
senkiale. Eble la fakto ke "Esperanta"
periodajo uzas nacian lingvon bezo-
nas iom da klarigo, ne nur por la aŭ-
toro de la ĉi-supra citajo.
Ciu periodajo havas certan cel-leg-
antaron, kiun la redaktoraro neniam
rajtas neglekti. Periodajoj aperas por
la legantoj kaj ne por la autoroj de
si a enhavo. Laŭ niaj modestaj ebl-
ecoj ankaŭ Esperanto USA submet-
iĝas al tiuj reguloj. Laŭ sia Statuto,
Esperanto-Ligo por Norda Ameriko
(ELNA) devas eldoni minimume
kvar fojojn jare novajleteron. La nov-
ajletero de ELNA celas unue la mem-
braron de la organizo, tiun preskaŭ
milpersonan grupon, kiu per kotizoj
kaj donacoj subtenas la agadon de la
organizo. La redaktoro de la novaj-
letero de ELNA celas ĝuste tiujn per-
sonojn. Li aŭ ŝi konscias ke estas ne-
eble kontentigi ĉiujn legantojn de
Esperanto USA ĉiutempe. La kaŭzoj
estas pluraj, kaj indas iom komenti la
ĉefajn.
La membraron de ELNA (do, la le-
gantaron de Esperanto USA) konsist-
igas centoj da personoj, kies kono de
Esperanto estas tre varia, de persono
al persono, inter nula kaj akademi-
nivela (kvankam tiu ĉi adjektivo ne
diras multon). La aĝoj de la samaj
personoj estas de dekkelkjaraj ĝis
naŭdekkelkjaraj, kaj kun la
aĝo venas ankaŭ malsamaj
emoj kaj inklinoj. Sen en-
kalkuli la membrojn ekster-
lande, tiuj loĝantaj en Uso-
no troviĝas en ĉiuj ŝtatoj,
kaj—kiel sciate—la kondiĉoj
por reklamado, lernado, uz-
ado de Esperanto varias
grandskale eĉ interne de la
sama ŝtato. La nivelo de la
edukiteco de niaj legantoj
estas same varia, ĉu lingve ĉu ali-
kampe. Sama estas ankaŭ la kono de
la angla lingvo, se enkalkuli ke pli ol
10% de la membraro de ELNA nask-
iĝis ekster Usono. Jen, do, nur kelkaj
kriterioj, kiuj multe diferencigas
niajn membrojn unu de la alia. Provi
kontentigi chin el ili per ĉiu numero
de Esperanto USA estus Utopia pen-
ado. Sekve, la redaktoro celas per ĉiu
numero kontentigi almenaŭ parton de
la legantaro, kaj kovri certajn aspek-
tojn de la movado al kiu ni apartenas.
Sed ankaŭ tiu ĉi lasta celo ne estas
facile plenumebla de unu sola perso-
no. La redaktoro loĝas kaj vivas plej-
parton de sia vivo en unu loko, kaj
sekve konas pli bone la situacion en
tiu loko. Lia aŭ ŝia laboro forte de-
pendas de la kontribuantoj, kiuj estas
preskaŭ senescepte ankaŭ legantoj.
Redaktoro, kiel la nomo implicas, ha-
vas kiel taskon ne verkadon de nov-
ajletero, sed ties ĉi redaktadon, en
kiu, kompreneble, li aŭ ŝi ne estas ne-
subjektiva. Lia aŭ ŝia subjektiveco
baziĝas principe ne sur personaj kia-
esperctnlo USA  3/1997
loj, sed sur redaktoraj. La rezulto de
lia aŭ ŝia laboro devas kongrui kun la
celoj de la organizo por kiu li aŭ ŝi
laboras, ĉu volontule ĉu dungite. Kaj
tiuj celoj ja estas ne malmultaj.
Ekde sia komenco Esperanto celis
helpi reciprokan interkompreniĝon
inter tiuj personoj malsamlingvaj,
kiuj tion deziras. Gi provas solvi pro-
blemojn kreitajn de manko de komu-
nikebleco. Cirkau la lingvo kreiĝis
movado, kiu ene de si mem forigis
tiun problemon, kaj kiu celas montri
al la aliaj, ke solvo ja povas ekzisti
pere de Esperanto por la monda Ba-
belo. Por tiuj, kiuj jam lernis la ling-
von ekzistas pluraj eblecoj por uzi
ĝin. Por tiuj, kiuj lernas la lingvon
estas bezonataj materialoj kaj meto-
doj por atingi kiel eble plej rapide
tian nivelon, kiu permesus la uzadon
de la lingvo. Por tiuj, kiuj okupiĝas
pri la disvastigo de la lingvo, necesas
provizi la rimedojn sukcesigi ilian la-
boron. Ciuj ĉi bezonoj/necesoj postu-
las malsamajn solvojn en malsamaj
^ lingvoj.
Por tiuj, kiuj jam povas utiligi la
lingvon senprobleme, la fakto ke pe-
riodajo aŭ libro aperis en tiu lando aŭ
alia apenaŭ gravas tiom longe kiom
ili povas ĝui ilin. Por tiuj, kiuj nun
lernas la lingvon ne estas malgrava la
aperloko de la instrumaterialo, kiun
ili uzas, aŭ la klarig-lingvo uzata en
tiu instrumaterialo. Por tiuj, kiuj
reklamas (aŭ propagandas, se vi
preferas) Esperanton, la lingvo en kiu
ili faras tion ludas ĉefan rolon. Al
ĉiuj ĉi la redaktoro de Esperanto
USA devas turni sian atenton, kaj al
ĉiu necesas provizi taŭgajn materia-
lojn aŭ informojn en la taŭga lingvo.
Por tiu, kiu nun lernas Esperanton,
lernolibro por parolantoj de la angla
apenaŭ utilas, se lia aŭ ŝia lingvo ne
estas la angla. Por tiuj, kiuj reklamas
Esperanton, ĉe kantona foiro ni dim,
ept materialoj pri Esperanto en Esperanto
mem estas senutilaj. Malpli utilaj ol
en la svahila, ĉeroka, afrikansa, flan-
dra, aŭ aliaj "ekzotaj" lingvoj, kies
parolantoj estas pli facile troveblaj en
usonaj kantona foiro aŭ kvartala drin-
kejo.
Inter la taskoj de ELNA kaj, sekve,
de ĝia novajletero, estas ankaŭ helpi
al tiuj, kiuj instruas aŭ lernas Esper-
anton, kaj al tiuj, kiuj reklamas ĝin.
Informoj utilaj al ili estas ĉefe en na-
cia lingvo, niakaze, la angla. La nov-
ajletero (la subtitolo mem diras tion)
celas doni precipe novajojn kaj in-
formojn, ne instrui la lingvon. Por tio
ĉi ekzistas kursoj, instrumaterialoj
kaj eĉ periodajoj. Antaŭ ol havi
membraron, kiu senescepte parolos
Esperanton senprobleme, ni devas
krei tiun membraron. Al ĝi ni ne po-
vas oferti materialojn nur en Es-
peranto, car ili ja ne pretus pagi por
novajletero, kiun ili ne povas legi.
Kiel mi menciis ankaŭ pli supre, la
redaktoro pretigas la novajleteron el
la ricevitaj materialoj, al kiuj laune-
cese li aŭ ŝi aldonas la siajn. Li aŭ ŝi
ne estas principe autoro de materia-
loj, des malpli tradukanto. La materi-
alojn ricevitajn li aŭ ŝi publikigas
tiajn, kiaj ili alvenis, post eventuala
poluro lingva aŭ stila. Verkante, la
aŭtoro supozeble havis certan legant-
aron en la menso, kiun li aŭ ŝi celis,
kaj depende de tiu la elektita lingvo
estis la angla au Esperanto. La redak-
toro ne povas laŭplaĉe traduki (tra-
dukado estas certagrade speco de re-
verkado) materialon en alian lingvon,
kiun la komence celita legantaro ne
nepre komprenus, aŭ ne povns utiligi.
Plie, tradukante, la redaktoro aldonus
iom da si, lingve kaj stile, tiel damaĝ-
ante la originalan verkon. Laŭ mi tio
tre gravas. Gravas ke la legantaro
konu la lingvajn kaj stilajn kvalitojn
de la originala autoro (cu estas mal-
grave kiom bone esprimiĝas niaj pro-
pagandistoj sialingve provante dis-
konigi Esperanton?). Kaj fine, ne
malpli grava estas la emo de la aŭto-
roj uzi unu lingvon aŭ alian. La re-
daktoro ne rajtas trudi certan lingvon,
same kiel li aŭ ŝi ne rajtas trudi siajn
personajn sintenojn.
La leganto per kies citajo ni ko-
mencis komparas El Popola Clnio
kaj Monato kun Esperanto USA. Tio
iel aspektas kvazau kompari pirojn
kaj pomojn, kiuj ja povas foje simili
sed ne povas esti identaj. EI Popola
Cinio estas (nesendependa) maga-
zino, parte financata de la ĉina regist-
aro, por propagandi eksterlanden la
vidpunkton de la financanto. Mal-
feliĉe (ad eble feliĉe) la usona regist-
aro ne subtenas nian agadon, do nek
nian novajleteron. Monato estas, lau
la propra difino, internacia magazino
sendependa. Ambaŭ periodajoj celas
internacian legantaron E-lingvan. Es-
peranto USA, kiel organo de nacia E-
organizo celas siajn membrojn, inter
kiuj kelkaj ne parolas Esperanton. Gi
similas tiusence al aliaj periodajoj
Esperantaj, aperantaj en multaj lan-
doj de la mondo. Ĉina Esperanto-Li-
go, la eldonanto de El Popola Cinio,
eldonas por siaj membroj la ĉinling-
van La Mondo; La Franca esperant-
isto, la organo de la Unuiĝo Franca
por Esperanto, estas dulingva, franca
kaj Esperanta; La Brita Esperantisto,
la organo de la Brita Esperanto-Aso-
cio, estas dulingva, angla kaj Esper-
anta; sama estas Esperanto sub la Su-
da Kmco, la komuna organo de la E-
asocioj en Australio kaj Nov-Ze-
lando. La listo estas tro longa por
daŭrigi. Mi nur volis montri ke
Esperanto USA per sia dulingveco ne
estas unika. Kaj ĝi devas resti tia por
esti utila al kiom eble plej multe da
siaj legantoj.

Passion and Patience
Esperantists tend to be a pretty
passionate group. And that's a good
thing. Without our deep caring about
making the world a better place, few
of us would be drawn to the idea of
an international language. Without
this passion, generations of Esperan-
tists would not have sacrificed so
much, and worked the millions of
often thankless hours to build and
continue our movement. Esperanto
would not have survived for more
than 100 years without the passionate
caring of millions of individuals.
We care about the world, we care
about Esperanto, we care about the
movement and our friends within it.
We care about our projects and ideas,
and we care deeply about doing
what's right. In general, these too are
very positive aspects of our com-
munity. It is in the specifics of apply-
ing this caring that we sometimes
drift off of the moral high ground
embodied by the Interna Ideo and
begin to descend the slippery slopes
of "My Way is the Only Way
(MWOW)."
The doctrine of MWOW in the
Movado certainly predates the Fun-
damento. Indeed, this is such a basic
human philosophy, that it must have
been grafted onto Esperanto very
early in our history. It continues to
thrive today. You cannot open an
Esperanto periodical without read-
ing an article or letter saying that the
International Language will succeed
"Only when all Esperantists..." accept
the viewpoint or support the pet pro-
ject of the author.
Personally, I favor diversity. Our
movement thrives because we act on
our inspirations, and don't always
follow our leaders like sheep. The
movement often benefits from the
myriad ideas and experiments com-
ing from thousands of locations. The
Esperanto Way has always been in-
herently democratic, with everyone
trying everything that occurs to them.
But our MWOW members sometimes
seem to wish for a rigid hierarchy.
MWOW has both an active and a
passive side. Passive MWOWism can
be seen every time a new idea is sug-
gested. From out of the woodwork
come dozens of voices saying, "1
don't know what we should be doing,
but that isn't it. I'd rather do nothing
than THAT!" The active MWOW
response rejects al! suggestions and
improvements, insisting that the ini-
tial proposal cannot be changed one
iota. Passions flare and action halts.
That doesn't have to happen, even
among passionate folks like our-
selves. My request is that we try to
temper our passion with the patience
that is also abundant in our move-
ment. If we can patiently strive year
after year for the success of
Esperanto, we can learn to be patient
with each others' ideas. An active
MWOWist who listens carefully may
find that some suggestions lead to
real improvements. Passive MWOW-
ists may find that there are many
benefits to collaborating, even when
they don't agree with every aspect of
the plan.
I have been guilty of impatience
with those who won't accept sug-
gestions. I have too often refused to
lend my energies to projects that
weren't fully polished. Recently,
exercising patience and collaboration
has brought me more pleasure from
Esperanto than my previous passion
for perfection. I suggest that all
ELNA members reject MWOWism
and take a more balanced approach to
the Movado. Only then will Esper-
anto realiy progress.

La kvara Aŭtuna Renkontiĝo Es-
perantista en Ludlow, Vermonto, re-
aliĝis la 1 l-13an de oktobro. Meze
de glorbrila aŭtuna foliaro ariĝis ĉe
la agrabla montara feriejo Okemo
nekutime diversaĝa grupo de pli ol
70 homoj el kvin landoj. Ceestis kiel
honorataj gastoj d-ro Claude Piron
kaj lia afabla edzino Nicole. Troviĝis
prelegoj, kursetoj, librovendado,
promenoj, ludoj, muzikado kaj aliaj
okupoj. La kultura vespero, sekvante
ege bongustan kunmetitan "hazard-
manĝon", alportis i.a. lumbildajn
programojn, literaturan omaĝon al
Edmond Privat, originalan teatrajon
kaj tiitgrupan kantplantadon de na-
poj. Gitare akompanante sin, d-ro
Piron mem regalis per kelkaj kantoj.
En sia dimanĉa ĉefparolado "Espe-
ranto: kiaj perspektivoj?" d-ro Piron
bone komprenigis per ekzemploj ke
efektive neniu povas antaŭvidi la est-
ontecon de la lingvo. Asertinte ke
por la homaro la kreado de E-o egal-
rangas kun la elpensado de skrib-
sistemoj mem, li priparolis la geni-
ajojn de sia tre amata lingvo kaj sian
profundon kredon ke Esperanto mal-
graŭ portempaj sortoŝanĝoj neniam
povos morti, sed ke samkiel ekz. ri-
late "arabajn" ciferojn, ĉiuj iam re-
konos ĝian superecon kiel komunik-
ilo.
La tuta aranĝo impresis tre granda,
vigla kaj diversa, kun multaj infanoj,
bonegaj parolantoj kaj seriozaj in-
teresitoj. Precipe danke al Normand
Fleury kaj Zdravka Metz de Mont-
realo, la ĉiujara afero refoje—kaj
aparte bone—sukcesis.

Report on ELNA's major educational project "Pasporto al la tuta mondo'
■ Work on ELNA's 15-lesson Espe-
ranto course for video and television
is on schedule. The first four lessons
have been filmed and are in the pro-
cess of final editing, and are sched-
uled to be available for purchase and
delivery to prepurchasers in January,
1998. Donations large and small are
constantly being received by ELNA
and UEA and through other cooper-
ating Esperanto organizations such as
Japana Esperanto-Institute So far,
advance purchases and donations
have enabled completion of the first
four lessons costing approximately
US$80,000; it is hoped that further
financial support from individuals
and organizations will bring in the
additional $100,000 needed for the
next five lessons, scheduled for film-
ing in July, 1998.
The importance of this educational
series  has  been  recognized
I widely in the Esperanto world;
the international Esperanto
organization Universala Esper-
anto-Asocio has lent its aus-
pices and support, and the
project has been awarded the
prestigious "Premio Saliko"
worth 20,000 Dutch guilders
(about US$ 10,000) and a
grant from the FAME Foun-
dation of 3,000 German marks
(about US$ 1,400). The cam-
paign for further financial sup-
port of this important project
continues.

and teachers, below is repro-

rials of the University of New Mex-

"The educational film Pasporto at la
tuta mondo is based upon the latest
theories of instruction and acquisition of
a second language. Current studies show
that motivation of the student is most
important to effective language learning.
An attention-catching tale with coherent
and integral intrigue gives the student a
framework, a foundation and a visual
medium for absorbing and understand-
ing the language. Developing roles and
relationships permit a gradual introduc-
tion of new lexical and grammatical
elements, together with a structured re-
petition of each element. Liveliness and
wittiness hold the interest of the student,
who will want to pay attention so as to
catch all of the jokes and find out what
is happening. The somewhat farcical
style not only amuses but relaxes the
spectator, and reassures the student
about his or her own mistakes.
A second element of current language
instruction theory insists on the impor-
tance of natural, communicative mate-
rial. For that reason we avoid the slow
speech and use of an extremely reduced
vocabulary found in old-fashioned
teaching methods. Likewise we avoid
the empty patterns and boring repetition
of outmoded instnictional dialogues. In
contrast, conversations in Pasporto al la
tuta mondo develop between several ac-
tors, who are visibly listening, learning
and changing their standpoints because
of the exchanges at normal conversa-
tional speed, exchanges which have sig-
nificance for them. The avoidance of
didactic elements of national languages
and on-screen text places the focus on
actual live speech.
The use of video tapes permits the in-
structor or student to repeatedly view
scenes and elements to more deeply un-
derstand them. Accompanying work-
books and exercises will solidify and
clarify the language-instruction materi-
als presented. The workbooks will ap-
pear in various national language ver-
sions, which will facilitate understand-
ing, study and acquisition of the material

fujaro, kiun kun iom da fantazio oni
povus kompari kun la aŭstralia
diĝeriduo (didgeridoo) aft la rumana
tulnic (speco de alpkomo), kaj kiu
aŭdeblas ankaii en aliaj muzikajoj.
Atente aiiskultante mi havis foje la
impreson ke la muzikajoj estas hun-
garaj ("Kiam mi iris", "Venu, venu
kun mi trinki", "Hej, tra arbaro"),
dum en aliaj oni ja povas audi la
hungaran zimbalon (cimbalom)
("Junulet', svelta vi") aii tipe hun-
garan duan vilonon (kontrds) ("Skri-
bis al mi amatin'"); "Ho, acer'" sonas
tiel hungare, ke mi eĉ povas imagi
ĝin kiel Javorfa (Acero). Sendube
dum la jarcentoj la du kulturoj prun-
tis unu al la alia, kaj nun estas mal-
facile diri, al kiu apartenis origine tiu
au alia muzikajo. Fakte, por amanto
de tiaspeca muziko, tio eĉ ne gravas.
La protagonistoj de ĉi parto estas la
popola muzikensemblo "Keĉka" (ĉu
hungare kecske [kapro]?) sub la estr-
ado de Peter Sarnovsky, kiu ankaii
kantas.
La dua parto (la dua flanko de la
kasedo) malfermiĝas per kanto de la
ĉi-jarcenta slovaka komponisto
Eugen Suchoh, kiun oni povas facile
konsideri patriota kanto: "Mia lando
ĉarma". Slovakan etoson havas
ankaii "Ce rivero", dum la lulkanto
"Violono acera" per sia rekantajo
haju memorigis min pri la "Siberia
lulkanto" de Julio Baghy kaj ties
bajn, auskultebla sur la kasedo "Al
venko!" de Jozsef Dinnyes. La fina
kanto de la albumo estis por mi vera
surprizo: mi ĝin lernis en infan-
vartejo kiel rumanan popolkanton, eĉ
kun la sama titolo: "Dancu, dancu".

"Cantica", dirigentita de Bo/idar
Vongrej.
El lingva vidpunkto, tiu ĉi eldon-
ajo estas senriproĉa. Tio instigas
onin demandi ĉu la kantistoj parolas
Esperanton. Au ili nur papagas, sub
la sendube lerta instruado de Petro
Chrdle (la posedanto de KAVA-
PECH), Joachim Giessner (la traduk-
into de la kantotekstoj) kaj Stano
Ma reek (la manaĝero de la registr-
ejo—EMA Records).

Sometimes Esperantists like to
brag about the richness of Esperanto
culture, yet feel somewhat ashamed
about some of the areas of remaining
paucity. Sure, there's plenty of
poetry, lots of translated folk songs
and a rich vein of social commentary
Dylanesque troubadour-with-guitar
songs. But serious rock music?
Well...
Recently this situation has greatly
improved with regard to several
styles, including rock'n'roll music.
Anyone who has heard the
compilation album Vinilkosmo
Vohimo 1 will doubtlessly remember
the excellent track Reĝoj de cindro
by Persone. Well, here's the good
news: they have a professional-
quality CD which includes thirteen
tracks of high-energy, high-quality
rock'n'roll (actually 12, one is
acoustic).   This   band   has   been
esperanto USA  3/1997
now, with some changes in its mem-
bers. Persone has played to apprecia-

tive audiences at Esperanto events
throughout Europe throughout these
ten years. They had previously re-
leased two cassettes, but this is their
first slick, truly professional quality
release. There's plenty of variety
within the genre and a wide range of
subject matter. Since the band-mem-
bers all live in Sweden, the subject
matter mostly reflects the Nordic
sensibility of darkness and despair,
punctuated by dreams and longing
for warmth, light and love. For ex-
ample, Nun maUumas ekstere in-
cludes these lyrics:

This one song is a departure from
the others in instrumentation, for it
feattires only a solo acoustic guitar;
it is rather like Martin's solo song on
Vinilkosmo Vol unto 2.
There is also serious social com-
mentary. Take for example the be-
ginning of Reĝoj de clndro which
poetically condemns politicians and
other warriors:

The group consists of Anders
Grop on electric bass, Bertilo
Wennergren on drums and Martin
Wiese on electric guitar. Martin does
most of the singing, with back-up
vocals by the other two. Martin has
an expressive and pleasant voice,
which holds up well after repeated
listening. His guitar sound is full
enough to sound complete within the
context of a trio. Anders lays down
solid basslines to provide context,
while Bertilo pounds out vibrant
rhythms to thrust the songs forward.
The rhythm section of Anders and
Bertilo keeps a foundation upon
which Martin can rely and from
which he can spin variations.

Povus esti simple
All in all, this is a rock album
which more than holds its own in
any context, in any language; but it
is especially worthy as an example
of the current development of
modern youth culture in Esperantio.

Tiuj kinj ekstudas Esperanton sen-

The Esperanto Society of Cincin-
nati OH and Sherry Wells' Espe-
ranto Study Group in Michigan re-
cently experimented with a "telefon-
kunveno". Participants at both ends
set up speaker-phones and, at a pre-
arranged time, the Michigan group
called Cincinnati. Five people par-
ticipated on the Michigan side and
four on the Ohio side. After in-
troductions, Jim Smith in Cincinnati
read greetings from David Wolff:
"Sainton al ĉiuj! Jen nova metodo
plifortigi lokajn grupojn kaj pli-
spertigi esperantistojn. Mi esperas ke
ĉi tin eksperimento estos granda suk-
ceso kaj multaj lokaj gnipoj uzos
ĝin. Mi gratulas Jim Smith kaj
Sherry Wells pro ilia bonega ideo.
Mi bedauras ke mi ne povas inter-
babili kun vi. Bonan ŝancon en via
vojaĝo en Esperantujo, kaj mi espe-
ras iutage renkonti vin."
The conversation was lively and
there was laughter on both sides. The
Michigan folks invited the Ohio
people to come up to Troy MI in
December for their Zamenhof ban-
quet. There was also discussion of
joining forces for next year's Ago-
Tago, possibly with Esperantists
from the Esperanto Association of
Central Ohio in Columbus. Sherry
suggested we might focus our efforts
in Cleveland where the editor of one
of the local papers is an Esperantist.
The "telefon-kunveno" turned out
to be a great way to break the re-
lative isolation of some local groups.
Letters and e-mail and newsletters
and books are great ways to get
linked to the world of Esperanto, but
the opportunity to actually talk to
other Esperantists shows off our
language at what it does best in
bringing people together in a spirit
of optimism and friendship.

I read with interest Joe Gamble's
article on the three problems of the
Esperanto culture and would like to
respond to it. First of all, I have
never heard an Esperantist refer to
our language as 'artificial' and if
others use the term we should not
fail to correct them. Klingon is arti-
ficial, so are the various computer
languages. Esperanto is as real as
any other naturally derived means of
human communication. The differ-
ence is in whether we choose to
speak to each other in a colorful
blend of linguistic inconsistencies or
whether we prefer to include only
the best and more logical. Although
the former seems infinitely more
picturesque, it has limited value as a
means of intercommunication. Es-
peranto allows us to have the best of
both worlds.
As to the cost of teaching Espe-
ranto—I believe it depends on the
level of commitment. Some years
ago, my local school district, which
is not rich, spent large amounts of
money and used valuable classroom
space to install computers, now ob-
solete, many of which had limited
educational value and little applica-
tion to the day-to-day lives of our
children. This was done mainly be-
cause the Principal was enamored of
the technology and possibilities,
relevant or not, which it opened up.
It also made the Superintendent look
good. Would that it had been Espe-
ranto!
I have a little direct knowledge of
the third point—that of efficacy at
the U.N.—because I once had the
opportunity to speak to a person who
had held a position of some respon-
sibility there. His message to me
was: The representatives of those
nations whose languages are used
and who hold the most power like it

grave, li subfosas la tutan koncepton pri intemacia lingvo.
just fine the way it is. He denied the
fact that native speakers have an
advantage on the basis that most
delegates are fluent in at least two
languages. As for the rest, it seems
that it's their own problem. His ad-
vice was that Esperantists should
work at the grass-roots levels, so that
when there are enough delegates (or
peace-keepers or rescuers) who al-
ready know Esperanto, they will
begin to use it spontaneously.
I believe our biggest problem is
the 'Americans Speak English' men-
tality. There is also a pernicious
piece of mythology out there, ac-
cording to which Esperanto came
and went because it wasn't practical
and there are a few die-hards left in
the world, who, like the flat-earthers,
will all be dead soon. These notions
have to go, but it seems there is no
short-cut. We must make the com-
mon-sense argument as well as we
can and hope to find some kindred
spirits. We won't all make it in quite
the same way, but isn't diversity
what we are really all about?

drescu picks, among other things, on
Esperanto in his latest book The Dog
with the Chip in His Neck (Picador
1996). According to NPR's bad boy,
"An idiom is language owned by a
profession, field, or subculture.
What you are calling here 'the inter-
active idiom' is a gang jargon that
has gone haywire, and is threatening
to become a kind of esperanto. Espe-
ranto, you may recall, was a syn-
thetic mishmash constructed by
some utopia-striick enthusiasts who
believed that a universal language
spoken rationally by reasonable peo-
ple might check our tendency to
murder each other."

ventor, devised a new life raft,
which "is dubbed Esperanto for the
artificial internatioanl language."

tional copyright infringement warn-
ing in Esperanto on the record. (La

The Sunday Telegraph, London, in
a humorous article (Aug 3 1997)
about the Tower of Babel in the EC
warns that "Esperanto enthusiasts,
British ones in particular, have inter-
preted the rise of Europanto as an
attack on them—or a threat to Espe-
ranto's status as the No. 1 'universal'
language." Oh yeah?!
According to LA Times (Oct 16
1997), "The Universal Translator, a
Windows 95-based software pro-
gram allows users to instantaneously
translate documents between English
and 25 other languages [...] includ-
ing Esperanto".
In an essay about his play Pente-
cost, British playwright David Ed-
gar, who extensively visited Eastern
Europe, remarks about the visited
countries that "Under actually exist-
ing Socialism, the story was differ-
ent. The substituted lingua franca
was not Esperanto (nor even Vola-
puk or Interglossa) but Russian."

Chicago Reader on Oct 30 1997.
An Esperanto ad is running in The
International Educator (Cummaquis
MA) for a whole year.
Here is the final paragraph from a
review by Douglas Eby of the movie
Gattaca: "As another design detail, a
«bit of fun» as he puts it, Niccol has
public address announcements in the
Gattaca Corporation headquarters
building done in Esperanto, a uni-
versal language that never caught on.
«It's such a frighteningly optimistic
culture,» he said. «The name
translates as 'one who hopes.' When
I talked to people involved in
Esperanto, they hope they can keep
it alive. The intention was that no
one would ever have to give up a
language. It would be used for flight
control, or in politics. It's such a
beautiful, idealistic concept.»"

In a letter published in The Japan
Times (Nov 12 1997) Michael Sloper
proposes "that the Japanese schools,
government and society at large re-
duce their support of English, and
expend resources to teach and utilize
the neutral international bridge-
language Esperanto." According to m
the author "an introductory course in
Es-peranto would serve as a better
introduction to language study in
general, would eventually improve
the students' abilities in other
languages, and also give a basis for
improving linguistic rights and
equality in international contexts.,.."
For the last few years Factsheet 5
(San Francisco) has been publishing
brief reviews of Esperanto periodic-
als. In the latest issue (#62) of this
comprehensive guide to the zine
jungle ELNA Update 2/1997 and
Esperantic Studies #8 (Spring 1997)
are the lucky ones to be reviewed.
Maya Kennedy (Pacifica CA) has
published yet another letter in praise
of Esperanto, this time in World
Press Review Dec 1997.
The first piece on the CD  The
Music of Lou Harrison, released by
Phoenix, is titled Pacifika Rondo

"The Mediterranean:
Bridge Between Cultures"
Exploration of this theme at the UK
will enable a better understanding of
the culture of this region of the world,
and will simultaneously explore the role
of our own intercultural bridge,
Esperanto. The coordinator of the
discussions of the theme will be Renato
Corsetti, renowned author and
Esperanto activist.
My visit to Montpellier this October
proved to be a real delight. This
walkable city is one of the lesser-known
jewels of France. And very French it is,
from the battlements of the ancient city
to the walls of the newer Greek-
appearing Antigone. The new addition,
known locally as the "Anti-Gone" was
constructed as a response to the
modern gigantic indoor shopping mall
known as the "Polygone." Oh so very
French!

Carrying on the theme of the UK, our
excursion to this ancient and important
Mediterranean crossroads will enable us
to learn even more.
Ulysses and St. Paul were shipwrecked
on Malta, but they were in no hurry to
leave; Ulysses, conqueror of Troy,
dawdled in Malta for seven years
beforre he departed.
People have lived on Malta since
before the dawn of recorded history.
Some, related to those who built
Stonehenge, left impressive megaliths
here dating from 4,000 B.C.E. Malta
has been visited or invaded by every
major civilization in the area; the
Phoenicians, Carthagenians, Romans,
Arabs, Normans, French, Knights of St.
John and the British have all left
evidence of their stays. Malta boasts the.
highest concentration of landmarks per
square mile in the world.
Malta is a feast for the senses; delicious
local cuisine and wines, bustling open-
air markets, traditional firewords
extravaganzas, delicate lace and
multicolored glassware, and a strong
Esperanto group who have repeatedly
invited us to come visit.
The Maltese language is the only
Semitic language written in Latin
characters. The language today has
assimilated many Italian, Greek and
Arabic words. English is the second
official language. We, of course, will
use the international language
Esperanto!
