During the '94 National Esperanto Congress, ELNA will be awarding trophys and monetary gifts to the best focal groups as prizes for the '94 Local Group Achievement Awards. David Wolff, who helped establish the Awards, explained the reasoning for the competition. "Local groups are the very foundation of the movement... But, all too often, our local groups are in- effective... ELNA, through the Local Groups Commission, is taking steps to help our local groups grow, gain strength, and become more effective,' he said. Some of the categories include outstanding iocai event outstanding newsietter.and highest membership growth rate. There is also a separate category for the largest college group and largest high school group. The competition began in September, when Wolff sent out a beginning survey to numerous local groups. A second survey will be sent to them soon. By comparing the two surveys, he and Don Coleman. ELNA's Commis- sioner for Local Groups, can determine which groups kept the most members, grew the most, etc. They will use the groups' newsletters to find winners in the other categories. Although the '94 Awards haven't been distributed yet, it's not loo late to be thinking about the '95 Awards. Establishing a group now will make you elgible for next year's Awards, since the second survey from this year's competition will serve as the first survey for next year's Awards. There's no better way to earn fame and recognition (not to mention hundreds of dollars in prize money) for your local club. For more details about the competition, or to receive the starter survey for the '95 Awards, contact USE J or the coordinator of the Awards, David Wolff, at: 6 Durkee Road Acton MA 01720 i Pennsylvania The '94 Northeast Regional Esperanto Congress will take place this year at Pinchot Stale Park near York, PA, from April 5 to 7. Spring has barely arrived for most of the country, yet it's time to be thinking about your summer plans You should probably start planning now for any summer Esperanto conventions you might want to attend this year, especially if you're going overseas. By planning early, you can take advantage of a variety of unique travel options, such as train passes. You'll have ample time to smooth out any potential problems {especially regarding passports and visas). And, you'll save yourself a bit of money by regisirating earty. Here are four of the most known summer Esperanto events: 25th SFSU Workshop San Francisco 26 June-15 July Duncan Charters, Stefan MacGill and Joachim Werdin will be teaching at this year's special 25th anniversary courses. As always, several classes are available for all levels, ranging from beginner to advanced. Naturally, the Esperantists in San Francisco will have lots of activities planned to keep you busy (when you're not studying, that is.) 42nd National Convention Sacramento, 15-13 July If you're already in California for the SFSU courses, why not stay a little longer there to attend this year's National Esperanto Convention? You'll be treated to an entertaining and exciting Esperanto weekend, in addition to visits to the State Capitol and other historic and natural attractions in Sacramento. 79th World Congress of Esperanto Seoul, 23-30 July The booming metropolis of Seoul will be celebrating two major events this year- its 600th anniversary as the capita) of Korea and the 79lh World Congress, only the third to ever take place in Asia. Participants of this year's World Congress will be right in time to enjoy not only the cultural and historic events of the Congress, but also those for Seoul. EVS is planning post-congress trips throughout South Korea, including stops in Pusan, Taegu andKyongju. But the country with the most MONA TO readers in 1992 per 1 million inhabitants was Iceland 50th World Congress of Young Esperan lists, Chonan. 30 July - 06 August Only six years after the hugely successful 1966 Summer Olympics, the young people of the world return once again to the Republic of Korea, to help celebrate the most known convention of young Esperantjsts. South Korea is one of the few countries where young Esperantists actually outnumber older Esperantists. So, you'll definitely have a chance to meet and know the Koreans well. Flyers and registration forms for these conventions are available from USE J. Of course, these aren't the only summer events! There are literally hundreds of other Esperanto events throughout the globe. Just drop a note by USEJ and we'll send you more information.
