Sheep, yogurt and lots of new friends (or, a look back at the 49th UK- Vraca) byJozefTruofw I liked my summer. I went to Bulgaria I had a fun time... Not enough? Wetljfi wrote about everything I did during the UK this year, I'd fill up thousands of Issues (Greatl I think I have an idea for the next few issues....) The UK flnternacla Junuiara Kongreso, or World Congress of Young Esper- antlsts) is the most important convention for young Esper- antlsts. This year proved to be no exception. More than 150 teens, college students and those who were simply ■young at heart" from 30 nations gathered in Vraca, a breathtaking city located among the mountains of northwest Bulgaria, from August 7 to 14. One week was definitely not enough to do everything planned. From the opening ceremonies (which included a concert by the famous Esper- antlst singer Nikolirf in the City Art Gallery) to the frenzied end (an all-night dance), the week was full of things to do. It was never easy to decide- should I hear the discussions on the languages of Spain (yes, there is more than one language spoken in Spain) or go to the Bulgarian folk dance courses? Juggling lessons or art lessons? .... decisions, decisions, decisions.... Well, I eventually had to choose SOMETHING, like hiking through the mountains and countryside. You're not an Esperantist until you've whistled "La Espero' while marching with 60 other samideanoj You're also not an Esperantlst If you weren't inducted into CEMI (the Esperantist chocolate lover's movement- this group really does exist!) The national evening, when localcultural groups performed The first bulletin of the UK said 'You won't be sorry attending the IJKI'. They wereright traditional songs and dances, was one event I was not going to miss. Ditto about my first Esperanto theatrical show, the shadow presentation and a last-minute discussion about sexism led by an American (yes, an American- and a member of USE J, tool) Annabeiie van Tuyl. The discussion Is so famous that even 'Tejo Tutmonde" (the magazine of the World Young Esperantlsts Organization) mentions it Like I said, one week wasn't enough. It won't be enough for you either, if you decide to attend the coming UK in South Korea The Koreans definitely know how to celebrate, and they'll have their chance to do Km 5 that when they host the 50th Worid Congress next year in Chonan from July 30 to August 06. The Korea Esperanto-Junuiaro (KEJ, or Korean Young Esperantists) has been preparing over four years for this event, so they are more than ready to take on the worid. As many as 300 young people are expected to attend. Be one of themll it's the perfect chance to enjoy not only the spirit and festivities of the UK, but also those for SeouLwhjch will be celebrating its 600th anniversary as the capital of Korea. Two parties at once- you can't ask for much more If you're scared of the price, don't be. Remember- we have Lucille Harmon on our side. She's the director of Esperanto Vojag-Servo (Esperanto Travel Service) in Oakland, CA, which has been taking care of travel to Esperanto events for years. EVS will be working very ctosety with USEJ to hetp you attend the'94 UK. (Old I use enough acronyms there??) There are several ways to reach South Korea. One of the most unique includes a train journey through Europe and China, with stops in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Beijing. [ContactUSEJ Immediately If you are interested In this option) No matter how you get there, plan on attending) Contact USEJ or EVS as soon as possible for more inform- ation.
