Summer camp for Esperantists

The travel section of the Sunday New
York Times carried an article a few
months ago about "summer camps for
adults," which are apparently all the rage
now among vacation-goers in the know.
The idea is that rather than spending your
valuable free time at the same old tourist
traps that everybody goes to, you can in-
stead spend a few weeks learning how to
bake bread and pastries at a cooking
school in Vermont, perfecting your cello-
playing skills at a conservatory in North
Carolina, or brushing up on your Latin at
a college in New York, to mention just a
few of the possibilities that the author of
the article proposed.
Of course American Esperantists have
known about this latest "vacation con-
cept" for a long time. For 20 years now,
people from all over the world have been
going to California during the summer to
study Esperanto at San Francisco State
University. This three-week program,
which offers everything from beginning
classes to advanced seminars, is reputed
to be among the best anywhere.
Many people return year after year, and
it is easy to see why. SF State has a very
pretty campus, and it's an ideal place to
immerse yourself in Esperanto for a few
weeks. Most participants live and eat
together right on campus, so you can
spend every waking moment speaking
and thinking in Esperanto, if you like
(you'll probably even start dreaming in
it!). When you feel like playing tourist, a
short streetcar or bus ride can take you to
Chinatown, Union Square, Golden Gate

La titolo de la artikolo estas "Nu Ca-
nadeanlangwaje'rasional,' eezitolern,"
kaj ĝi traktas ies novan projekton por
fonetikigi la anglan lingvon. Sur la
marĝeno, Marta skribis: "Kara Cathy,
Kiel oni kontraŭbatu mensogojn pri Es-
peranto?"
La koncernaj alineoj legiĝas jene (mi

teacher, said he always was
interested in language and cre-
ated his Canadien in 1987, the
centenary of the artificial lan-
guage Esperanto once touted as
the way to an (tielf) interna-
tional communication.
"There's no sense creating a
language that noone speaks,' he
said of Esperanto and its late
founder, the Polish philologist
Ludwig Zamenhof. "That's the
fatal weakness from which it
willneverrecover.... Itwas just
the wrong strategy.'"

dos; necesas, ke vi mem entreprenu tion.
Fakte, la apero de tiaj eraroj estas bona
oportuno informi la publikon pri Espe-
ranto.
Kaj la unua paŝo? Vi povas trafe rebati
erarojn nur se vi mem konas la faktojn.
ĉu vi konas la faktojn pri Esperanto?
Mi ne parolas pri la simplaj faktoj... ke
ĝi estas facile lernebla... ke substantivoj
finiĝas per -0 ... ke ĝin inventis iu pola
filologo. ĉu vi konas ĝian historion, ĝian
literaturon, gian aktualan staton en la
mondo? ĉu vi povas citi anekdotojn el la
propra sperto, kaj tiu de aliaj, por montri,

ke Esperanto estas afero ne nur teorie sed
ankaŭ praktike bona? ĉu vi povas kon-
traŭargumenti ne nur simplajn stultajojn
sed ankaŭ konkurantajn ideojn, kiuj
ŝajnas egale bonaj... je la unua vido?
Ni rigardu la "faktojn", kiujn nesciante
proponas s-ro Culp kaj kiujn naive
transdonis al ni la verkinto de la artikolo.
1) Se vi fakte studis ne nur la historion
de Esperanto, sed ankaŭ la vivon de
Zamenhof, vi tuj rimarkos, ke L.L.Z. ne
estis "filologo" sed simpla oftalmol-
ogo—ordinara homo, kiu ne profesie sed
"nur" amatore rilatis kun lingvoj. Ne
forgesu, tamen, ke "amatoro" etimologie
signifas "amanton". Cetere, filologoj
studas lingvojn por analizi ilin kaj kon-
stati jam ekzistantajn regulojn pri ilia
ŝanĝiĝemo. Zamenhof estis lingva ar-
tisto; lia kapablo estis ne nur analizi, sed
ankaŭ sintezi lingvon. Ne ekzistas
scienca nomo por tiaj homoj, car en la
historio ili ege maloftas—kompare kun
la filologoj.
2)  Cetere, Zamenhof estis pola nur
geografie; gente li estis judo (kaj sufiĉe
kaj prave fieris pri tio), kaj laŭ nacio li
opiniis sin ruso—la rusa estis lia denaska
lingvo.
3) Lia nomo estis ne Ludwig (aŭ, pli
ĝuste, Ludovik); tiun nomon oni fiksis al
li pro rusa leĝo, kiu postulis, ke ĉiu infano
havu "kristanan" nomon. Fakte, lia vera
nomo estis Lazar, kaj prave oni nomus
lin, en lia denaska lingvo, Lazar
Markoviĉ Zamenhof, t.e. Lazar Filo de
Markus Zamenhof.
4) Ke "ne havas sencon krei lingvon,
kiun neniu parolas", tio simple signifas,
ke laŭ s-ro Culp tute ne havas sencon krei
lingvon; car en la momento de kreo,
lingvon laŭdifine parolas neniu. ĉuste
Esperanto, tamen, pruvas, ke tio ne estas
nesuperebla malavantaĝo; car la fenom-
ena kreskado de Esperanto okazis ĝuste
en jarcento, kiam pro la ekonomia, poli-
tika kaj milita premo de la grandaj lingvoj
la malgrandaj emis velki kaj malaperi.
5) ĉu fakte neniu parolas Esperanton?
Se jes, kiom da homoj do scipovas la
lingvon? Nu, ni povas fantazii ciferqjn
ĝis ni dronos en ili, sed mi mem kutime
diras: "Inter du kaj dek-kvin milionoj da
homoj povas komuniki pere de Espe-
ranto; la faktan ciferon mi supozas pli
proksima al la 'du' ol al la 'dek-kvin'. Se
vi volas uzi ian oficialan nombron, la
World Alamanc and Book of Facts por
1989 uzas la ciferon du milionoj en la
tabelo de la plej ofte uzataj lingvoj de la
mondo."
car "la plej bona defendo estas atako",
estus bone ankaŭ scii ion pri la amataj
ĉevaletoj de la kritikantoj de Esperanto.
Tiu de s-ro Culp estas la fonetikigo de la
angla lingvo, kaj ankaŭ ia raciigo de ĝia
gramatiko. Tio estas evidente bonega
ideo; la angla lingvo certe bezonas ian
plibonigon. ĉu vi scias ion ajn pri la
historio de la fonetikiga movado? ĉu vi
povas ĝuste taksi ĝiajn ŝancojn de
sukceso? ĉu fakte fonetikigo de la angla
lingvo estas entrepreninda?
Jen kelkaj respondoj. S-ro Culp ne la
unua proponas tiajn ŝanĝojn en la angla
lingvo, sed malgraŭ multaj tiaj proponoj
dum la pasinta jarcento—ekzemple, la
fonetikiga kampanjo de la Chicago Trib-
une, kies eldonisto forte fmancis ĝin—

ento, la tute neracie literumata angla
skriblingvo ludas unuigan rolon en la
anglalingva mondo, same kiel la ĉina
skriblingvo en ĉinio dum multaj jarcen-

Jen kelkaj aliaj ordinaraj "faktoj" pri
Esperanto,kiuj fakte aperis en la gazetaro
dum lastaj monatoj. La nombro de Espe-
ranto-parolantoj atingis sian supron en
1930 ... Esperanto taŭgas por verki li-
brojn pri Esperanto, sed por nenio alia...
ĉiuj esperantistoj (= parolantoj de Espe-
ranto) estas "vortmarotistoj" kiuj celas
mondan unuiĝon.
Se tiuj aŭ similaj stultaĵoj aperus en
gazeto aŭ revuo, kiun vi legas, ĉu vi
povus respondi ilin?

Prof. Ron Glossop provides an excel-
lent short article "Esperanto Vivas—Eĉ
en Usono" in the Newsletter of the Illi-
nois Foreign Language Teahcers Asso-
ciation (Spring, 1989). Prof. Glossop
again emphasizes the great potential of
Esperanto in teaching foreign languages
to gifted young people, (from the CO.)
In its most recent catalog, "Audio-
Forum," a marketer of audio-visual for-
eign-language courses, includes the Es-
peranto course Jen Nia Mondo, devel-
oped by "the internationally noted lin-
guist" Dr. John C. Wells, who is currently
also the president of UEA. "Audio-Fo-
rum" has headquarters in Guilford, CT,

The Los Angeles, CA, Times (Oct 16,
1989), in an article "All Greek to You?
But Not to Esperanticists" (sic!) by
James Tortolano, briefly discusses Espe-
ranto and former Garden Grove, CA,
mayor J. Tilman Williams, an ardent
promoter and user of the language, (sent
by Peggy Zarchy)
Laurence Siegle, describing "Cast cre-
ating characters for [the play] 'Social
Security'" in the Brownsville, TX, Her-
ald (November 5, 1989), mentions
ELNA memberPrendaE. Cook ("Sophie
Greenglass"), her "almost total immer-
sion in Esperanto, the international lan-
guage," and her participation in Espe-
ranto congresses in seven (named) coun-

To Steve Jobs, formerly of Apple
Computer ("Unix is the Esperanto of
operating systems") and computer col-
umnist George Morrow ("Esperanto was
a product of the academic world in the
1930's ... it failed miserably") we can
now add Schlumberger software systems
specialist Dr. Scott Guthery, who in an
article on object-oriented programming
in Dr. Dobb's Journal (December, 1989)
blithely states that "Esperanto was won-
derful for writing books about Esperanto

"Esperanto tipped as language of the
future," says Luke Slattery, education
reporter for the Melbourne, Australia,
The Age (Jan. 4, 1990). Mr. Slattery
quotes at length from Dr. Peter Ellyard of
the Commission for the Future, who was
scheduled to open the 27th Congress of
the Australian Esperanto Association in
Melbourne the following weekend. The
article generated an "objective critique"
of Esperanto ("this bloodless, back-
boneless, witless deformity") by a Mr. D.
G. H. Jones (Jan. 8,1990) and a reasoned
response to Mr. Jones by Mr. Justice K.
Enderby, vice-president of the AEA (Jan.

Martha Ullman West, in two articles in
the Portland, OR, Oregonian (Jan. 12,
1990) about the Oregon Dance Consort's
presentation "Descendants," gives spe-
cial mention to the finale, led into by
singer Jacqui Sutton singing "Amazing
Grace" in Esperanto, (sent by Jim Deer)
"Try Esperanto," advises Cynthia
Libby in a letter to the San Francisco, C A,
Chronicle (Jan. 17, 1990). Ms. Libby
describes her use of Esperanto in a trip
through the Eastern Bloc, the Soviet
Union and China, regions where "Eng-
lish goes nowhere." "Until you experi-
ence [the lack of language barriers],"
says Ms. Libby, "you can't imagine the
pleasure of such direct communication.
Esperanto is the language of interna-
tional friendship." (noticed by I. Onet)
An article about a "rasional"-ized ver-
sion of English, created by Ted W. Culp
of Toronto, which appeared in The Daily
Sentinel (Jan. 24, 1990), suggests that
Esperanto has been a victim of poor strat-
egy. "There's no sense creating a lan-
guage that no one speaks"—though I find
it difficult to imagine any other kind of
language that one could create.... (sent

John Mathews, in a letter to the Sacra-
mento, CA, Bee (Jan. 25, 1990), points
out the difficulty for adults to learn for-
eign languages, particularly English, and
suggests Esperanto as a more viable al-
ternative for interpersonal communica-
tion, (sent by John Mathews)
ELNA member Prof. Ronald J. Glos-
sop, in a letter "Freedom To Travel" to
the editor of the St. Louis, MO,Post-Dis-
patch (Jan. 27, 1990), urges the U.S.
government to rescind its ban on travel to
Cuba so that speakers of Esperanto may
attend this year's World Esperanto Con-
gress in Havana. "Any imagined bad
consequences resulting from our going to
such meetings," says Prof. Glossop,
"cannot be worse than the bad interna-
tional publicity we will get from restrict-
ing the travel of our own citizens." (sent

"Por Trovi Amikojn Per Esperanto" is
the title of an excellent one-page letter by
ELNA member Arlyn Kerr in the travel
newsletter Europe Through The Back
Door. Mrs. Kerr does not speak of the
history or current number of speakers of
Esperanto, but demonstrates the useful-
ness of the language by quoting specific
experiences of her husband Les, her
daughter Julie, and Joel Brozovsky in
their travels. Editorial comment: this is
the sort of article I'd certainly like to see

Marilyn McMahon of the Santa Bar-
bara, CA, News-Press devotes an article,
"Intercontinental travels lead to global
volunteer work," to Santa BarbaraEsper-
antist William Mets, mentioning at one
point his interest in Esperanto, (sent by
Dorothy Holland-Kaupp)
The 7990 Yearbook of Jehovah's Wit-
nesses, section on Finland, describes the
1922 use of Esperanto by a Brother Har-
teva to translate a book about the religion,
present its ideas at the 1922 World Con-
gress in Helsinki, and spread the word in
Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union,

Park, or any of the other attractions that
San Francisco has to offer. The ocean is
just a few blocks from campus, and
watching people in hang-gliders hurl
themselves off cliffs has almost become
a traditional after-class activity.
The classes themselves promise to be
especially exciting this year. Two of the
instructors, Stefan MacGill and Jovan
Zarkovic, will be participating in this
program for the first time. Stefan
MacGill is anative of New Zealand, lived
in Rotterdam for several years while he
was director of the Central Office of
UEA, and now lives in Budapest. He is
perhaps best known for his use of role-
playing and humor in the classroom, and
he is the author of several very popular
textbooks which make use of these tech-
niques. He is in great demand as a teacher
and will be giving courses in the Soviet
Union and the Scandinavian countries
before coming to San Francisco in June.
The other newcomer, Jovan Zarkovic, is
also well known as a talented teacher. He
has taught in Denmark, Poland, and Bul-
garia, in addition to his native Yugosla-
via, and he is particularly expert in the
"Zagreb method" of teaching Esperanto,
which has been so popular in recent
years. Mr. Zarkovic is a professional in-
terpreter and currently works in the Yu-
goslav Embassy in Moscow. He has pub-
lisheda number of translations of literary
works into Esperanto and is now working
on a book on Esperanto stylistics.
Although all of the instructors will be
teaching in all four levels, each level will
have its own special focus. Level 1, for
beginners, will consist mainly of a com-
bination of the Zagreb and conversa-
tional methods which Mr. Zarkovic has
used so successfully elswhere. Students
will get a very intensive introduction to
the language, while having a lot of fun at
the same time. Both levels 2 and 3 (post-
baza and mezgrada) will be privileged
enough to be able to use MacGilPs best-
selling book La lauta vekhorloĝo with
the author himself. Level 2 will also get a
review of basic Esperanto grammar and
will be reading Claude Piron's new book
Vere aŭfantazie, which was written espe-

Rise in Book Orders
As always, with the publication of the
new ELNA BOOK SERVICE CATA-
LOG we have seen a sharp rise in book
purchases. We start planning the catalog
and its contents about six months in
advance to be sure that we have adequate
copies of each item in stock.
We moved the publication date to the
first of the year so that new members will
have an up-to-date listing of the major
items we carry. Future editions are
planned to appear at about the same time.
This is a significant improvement over
years gone by when the catalog was a
sporadic publication, often outdated and
difficult to use.
During the past two years, we have
focused on phasing out some of the out-
dated books we carry. This has not been
an easy task, but one facilitated by such
sales as "The Surprise Package" and
"Books by the Pound." We now have a
special list of old, discontinued or dam-
aged items at specially reduced rates. For
a complete list, send a large, self-ad-
dressed stamped envelope to the ELNA

We are very happy to report that even
with the general increase of book sales
during the past year we are able to ship
most orders on the day we receive them.
This is due in large part to the diligent
work of Ionel Onet, who is celebrating
his one year anniversary at ELNA.
The greatly improved appearance of
the catalog is largely due to Greg Was-
son, ex-directorof the Central Office and
now typesetter for Esperanto U.SA. as
well as a published author. Greg donated
aportion of the time necessary to produce
the catalog.
Handbook For
New Members of ELNA
Results from the recent survey about
the Handbook for New Members of
ELNA are still coming in so it won't be
until the third issue of Esperanto USA.

The Handbook was sent to all current
ELNA members, both new and long es-
tablished Esperantists, to get their opin-
ions of the booklet. Specifically, we are
looking for areas of needed improvement
so that the second edition will be more
useful to new members.
If you are a long established Esperan-
tist and haven't returned your survey,
please do so now so that your opinions
will be counted! If you need another
survey, please don't hesitate to ask.
The same goes for our newest mem-
bers. You might think you are too new to
have an opinion, but this booklet was
created for your use. We are anxious to
hear from you.
ELNA Membership Drive
As you can see by the "Membership
Thermometer" on the front cover of this
issue, our membership level has in-
creased notably since last issue. How-
ever, we are significantly below our ini-
tial goal of 1000 members for 1990.
If you haven't rejoined yet, now is the
time to do so. Check the mailing label on
the envelope in which this newsletter
arrived. If it says "Expired," then your
membership has lapsed as of the date
indicated on the envelope.

cially for students at this level. Piron is
always a very entertaining author, and I
am sure that students will really enjoy
this latest effort of his. Students in level 3
will be reading a wide selection of stories
and poems, both humorous and serious,
in Fabeloj de la verda pigo and the Baza
literatura krestomatio. In addition, they
will be surveying the recent music scene
in Esperanto, which has seen areal explo-
sion in growth in the last few years. They
will be reading the lyrics and listening to
arrangements of songs ranging in style
from rock and roll to opera, and just about
everything in between. Students in level
4 (supera) will read La blinda birdo by
the noted Hungarian novelst Istvan
Nemere. This book has received very
goodreviews and, as itdeals with apoliti-
cal theme, should be particularly topical
in these days of upheaval and change in
Europe. Level 4 will also consist of a
"potpourri" of sessions on topics such as
stylistics and translation, Esperanto
grammar, the history of Esperanto, hu-
mor in Esperanto, etc. Students in this
level are not particularly known for being
shy or lacking in opinions, so I expect
(and hope!) that class discussions will be
spirited and lively.
It is surely a very fortunate coincidence
that both of the foreign instructors this
year will be coming from Eastern Eu-
rope. When their contracts were being
arranged several months ago, who could
have imagined that so much would tran-
spire in that part of the world? Who
knows what will happen between now
and this summer? How will all of these
events affect the Esperanto movement in
these countries? Since both Stefan
MacGill and Jovan Zarkovic are cur-
rently "on the scene" right where so much
has been happening, I'm sure they will
have lots of interesting stories to tell.
For all of the above reasons, I think that
the Esperanto program at San Francisco
State University this year will be an ex-
ceptional experience. Whether you want
to think of it as a trendy summer retreat,
or as a good old-fashioned way to im-
prove your Esperanto, you won't come
away disappointed.                          □

[Grant Goodall, Professor at the Uni-
versity of Texas (El Paso), is a candi-
date for the ELNA vice-presidency,
and will also be the head instructor at
the Esperanto Summer Workshop at
San Francisco State University this
summer. Here are some of the things
he's been doing lately...]
The journal Foreign Languages, pub-
lished by Shanghai International Studies
University, recently published an article
of mine entitled "Kelkaj Rimarkoj pri la
Subjekto en Esperanto" as part of a col-
lection of articles honoring the centen-
nial of Esperanto. My article was based
on a lecture I gave at that university in
1987 while I was on a tour of several
Chinese universities. Shanghai Interna-
tional Studies University trains Espe-
ranto teachers from all over China. A
very impressive operation!
In November I was invited to give a
lecture at the University of Chihuahua,
where I spoke on the history of artificial
languages with special attention to Espe-
ranto. This was part of their "Humanities
Week" celebration which they have ev-
ery year. There are not very many Esper-
antists in Chihuahua, but among them are
some very prominent members of the
community, so the idea of Esperanto is
fairly well known among educated
people. The founder of the School of
Humanities at the University of Chihua-
hua, Federico Ferro Gay, is an Esperan-
tist who immigrated to Mexico from It-
aly. A number of Esperantists there have
already made plans to attend the UK in
Havana.

Wheeler, in China to teach English as
part of a teacher exchange program,
recently participated in the First Asian
Conference of Esperanto Teaching at
Nanning, Guangxi Province, China, 6-
11 November. She reports on it in a
general letter.]
We had official receptions, artistic
performances by different "Minority
Nationalities" of Southern China through
music and dancing, and most of all, hours
of exchanging ideas how to improve Es-
peranto instruction and performance lev-
els throughout Asia.
Chinese teachers of all levels and all
ages traveled from far and near to partici-
pate, from Beijing on the 40s to Nanning
on the Tropic of Cancer, and from
Lanzhou 103eE to 124eE Dalian. Then
add Esperanto teachers from Belgium,
Sweden, US, and a school principal from
Estonia who traveled eight days and
nights by train from Tartu to Nanning and
you know the level of excitement and
dedication to helping people communi-
cate in a 2nd language accessible to all—
now! (Whoops, forgot to include Japan
and Korea to complete the Asian partici-
pation.)
About forty people worked and
planned for four and a half days. The
importance of strengthening Asian
groups and expanding learning opportu-
nities throughout the Pacific Basin are
urgent needs for the Universal Esperanto
Association, and all-the-world commu-
nication.
As part of the effort to improve lan-
guage competence 6 1/2 hours of Interna-
tional Exams were participated in by
many. Eight or nine passed the Mezgrada
(Intermediate) and another eight or nine
passed the Baza (Elementary) Levels.

Chen Min and I passed the mezgrada
"Tre Bone." I was so proud to be among
the young Chinese teachers at the first
ever Asian Conference for Esperanto
Instructors. I'd never had the chance to
take the Internacia Ligo de Esperantistaj
Instruistoj exam.

lando, kies popoloj nun loĝas en la suda
teritorio de Soveta Unio. Ĝiaj triboj estas
disĵetitaj tra la oazoj de Meza Azio, en la
grandegaj dezertoj Karakum kaj
Kizilkum. La teritorion tranĉis la iama
Granda Silka vojo, laŭ kiu iam vagis
kamelaj karavanoj. La uzbekaj popoloj
havas riĉan historion, kies kulturaj
monumentoj respeguliĝas en la antikva
arkitekturo kaj moderna arto. Pro la
vivkondiĉoj kaj mahometanaj vivkon-

Universalajn Kongresojn de Esperanto. Li

MURRAY
Mary Murray, who passed away on January
9,1990, grew up in Oregon, the daughter of a
circuit-riding Mennonite minister. She mar-
ried Connell Murray in 1917. She was a val-
ued friend to many of us and devoted to the
Esperanto movement.
Following retirement from her teaching
post in Areata, California, where she taught
Esperanto to her fourth graders, Mary and
husband Conn went off in 1963 to their first
world Esperanto convention in Sofia, Bul-
garia. Afterward they traveled widely in Eu-
rope. Returning home through New York,
Mary became convinced that ELNA should
have an office there for access to the major
media. The Murrays, with the late Mark Starr,
established the New York branch of Espe-
ranto Information Center. Mary was success-
ful in getting newspaper coverage and a staff
of volunteers.
In 1965, following the world Esperanto
Convention in Tokyo, Conn and Mary set out
for a barnstorming trip around the world to 26
countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Eu-
rope. Whenever they arrived at a city, they
contacted the leading newspapers and offered
an interview. "No newspaper turned us
down," Mary wrote. Their trip took them to
Taiway, Hongkong, Bangkok, New Delhi.
The interview in Manila brought downtown
workers to their hotel. Ever the teacher, Mary
set up a blackboard in their room and began
lunch hour lessons for about three weeks.
Li December 1965, an article in The Daily
Star, Beirut, Lebanon was titled: "Esperanto
Estas Modema Lingvo por la Tuta Mondo"
resulting in classes at their apartment in the
Yacoubian Building on Chouran Street. An-
other long article in Beirut's Kayhan
International paper brought more students.
While there, on Christmas Day, Mary cut
cakes and served coffee at the Navy Canteen
set up in a big hotel to serve 68000 members
of the U.S. Sixth Fleet. She wrote: "Most
Esperanto activity stopped for the holidays,
but will contact the colleges now." Those
were gentler times in the Middle East.
"Bonan Vojaĝon, Mary" was the title of an
account by Zhu Mingyi of the Chinese Espe-
ranto League, Beijing, in El Popola ĉinio.
Mary suffered a massive heart attack in
Nanjing at the end of her tour in 1980. She
promptly won the hearts of the medical staff in
her hospital. And Zhu spent a week sleeping
on two chairs in the corridor outside her room.
"In the long course of her active and adven-
turious life, Mary never lost sight of the basic
goal that meant more to her than anything
else: peace. Peace on earth, and peace
within—for.inher eyes, neither couldever be
achieved without the other and both were
required to heal this hurting world. In her
pursuit of this dream, she wrote, traveled,
spoke, and taught, and she wrote the book
'They Shall Not Hurt Nor Destroy'." Each
year she and Conn contributed a full stipend
for a deserving student for advanced Espe-
ranto studies at San Francisco State Univer-
sity.
"Mary Murray leaves us all a remarkable
legacy. The lessons she would have liked us to
learn from her life are, like all great truths,
very simple—yet utterly vital: cherish the
past, embrace the present, and don't fear the
future; reach out to others and let them reach
back; explore the inexplicable, believe the
unbelievable. Expect a Miracle. And, most
important of all, love one another, and the
world, as best you can. For love like that—like
hers!—will outlive us all. And that's the last
and best gift she gives us."

La Oomoto-Lernejo de Japanaj
Tradiciaj Artoj: Kultura Seminario

The last couple of years have seen
some very exciting developments for Es-
peranto in the United States. By almost
any objective measure, there seems to be
a real surge of interest in the Interna-
tional Language, and I think ELNA has
done an excellent job in taking advantage
of this surge and keeping it going. I would
welcome the opportunity to serve as
Vice-President of ELNA and to help
ELNA evolve to face the challenges that
lie ahead. Given the many new members
we have acquired over the last few years,
I am especially interested in strengthen-
ing ELNA's ability to help American
Esperantists stay in touch with the inter-
national Esperanto speaking commu-
nity.

Mi scivolas ĉu ELNA pretas por on-
dego da intereso. Kianplanon ni havos?
Kaj Hon ni faru por stimuli ondojn?
Specialan atenton ni ŝuldas al la eduka
kampo. Mi rekomendas sendi informojn,
inviti observantojn, reklami enprofesiaj
jurnaloj, kaj starigi (malgrandajn) kon-
ferencojn de spertuloj pri instruado de
fremdaj lingvoj.
Per nia lastatempa ricevo de mono, ni
daŭre altigu la nivelon de la centra
oficejo, kaj la kvanton kaj kvaliton de la
laboro.
Por allogi membrojn, tiu ricevu alme-
naŭ po du malsamajn specimenojn de
internaciaj gazetoj. Novaj membroj ofte
nek abonas tiajn gazetojn, nek aliĝas al
UEA, do Hi ne spertas la aktualan nivelon
de Esperanto-uzado en la mondo. Landa
periodajo necesas sed ne sufiĉas.
Versajne ni ne scias la karakterizojn de
tiuj, kiuj restas membroj, kaj de tiuj kiuj
aliĝas kaj baldaŭ forfalas. Ni klopodu
trovi, per enketajo, kion niaj aliĝantoj
deziras kaj satas, kaj male.

There are three distinct focuses of the
language movement's growth and devel-
opment which, to me, appear as the most
clearly sanguine approaches: No.l, and
first of all, would be toward youth; the
young of North America, andofthe entire
world. No. 2 would be to advertise in
publications such as Saturday Review
and Verbatim (among others), which
would very likely reach the individual
open to the idealistic aspect of an inter-
national language; andNo. 3 would be to
extend to a greater degree our outreach
across the world whereby the ELNA will
be viewed in a more assertive leadership
role.
To some extent, said with tongue-in-
cheek, the success of Esperanto within
the frame of American mentality corre-
lates to the language's being understood
as a profit-making venture! If there were
a way in which to cause Esperanto to be
marketable, its success would be as-
sured. Albeit improbable, then why not
attractive rewards? The point is to com-
mend and at the same time to dissemi-
nate.
I wish to be able to contribute from all
the experience of my thirty years in busi-
ness and teaching, but to do so will re-
quire more knowledge of what has been
planned and is in process.

The official ELNA convention, the (as yet)
unofficial Tut-Amerika Kongreso, and an
"oficiala antaŭ-kongreso de UEA", will all be
occurring at the same time in Mexico City.
Once before we held our ELNa convention
outside the U.S., in Vancouver in 1980. But
this convention will certainly prove to be our
most international national convention!
Although in the past the Mexican Esperan-
tists have been hesitant to invite a convention,
they are now very excited about helping to
host this very interesting gathering. Classes
are being started, and more Esperanto meet-
ings are being held than have been in a long
time. We hope we will continue to be a good
influence on our Esperanto neighbors to the
south.
Mexico City, with over 17 million inhabi-
tants, is a mixture of ultramodern; colonial
dating from the time of Cortez; Aztec palaces
and temples from the 14-15th centuries; and
ancient ruins. Recently during the digging of
the Metro, the ruins of an ancient civilization
from 1500 B.C. were uncovered. No other
city in the world so easily displays its fascinat-
ing past at the same time as its beautiful
contemporary culture. Music and dance
abound, and we won't even talk about reason-
able prices for good hotels and shopping!
The week of July 7-14 will be filled not
only with business sessions for ELNA, but
also with marvelous excursions in and around
the city: fascinating architecture and murals
abound; the archeological museum is proba-
bly the best of its kind in the world; the
ELNA Convention Will Be Held in Mexico City

Esperantujo one morning with special music
and decorations; the world-famous Folk-
lorico Ballet will be included; a visit to the
famous shrine of Guadalupe, the University
and the Pyramids of the Moon and the Sun;
our banquet with Mariachi music. Other full-
day trips are also available.
For those who are not going to Cuba, it
would be a shame not to use this trip to see
more of Mexico. The Colonial route north and
west of Mexico City has some of the most
charming and beautiful cities in the world!
The week of July 14-21 will be one to relish
foryears, and yes, of course, we will have full
Esperanto translation!
After the UK in Cuba, Esperanto Travel
Service's "Oficiala Post-Kongreso" will visit
Taxco, Puebla, and Oaxaca—cities which
bring to mind the mental picture of how you
think romantic Mexico has got to look.
