The Washington Monument, just one of the many sights you'll see during
the ELNA Convention. Completed in J884 after 36 years of labor, the
obelisk once relied on a steam-driven elevator ride of 20 minutes to take
men to the top. Women and children were forced to toil up the 897 steps
because the original elevator was considered too dangerous. The modern
elevator takes 90 seconds to reach the 555-foot summit.

High paper in Syracuse, NY,
carries an article "Esperanto
Strives to be World Language"
which tells about international
language projects, mentions the
1986 World Youth Esperanto
Convention in Israel, and observes
"Esperanto is the only
[international language] that has
a large following."
New Jersey Record
(Passaic/Morris), 3/1/87,
featured a lengthy article by
staffer Bill Sanderson with photo
of Kev. Sigmund Klimowicz.
Klimowicz was a seminary
student when the Nazis invaded
Poland in 1939. He spent five years
at Dachau concentration camp
where he joined an underground
Esperanto group—an association
that saved his life. A fellow
esperantist, a German prisoner,
had some influence over who was
on the list for deadly medical
experiments and spared the young
Franciscan.
Jeopardy, the popular TV game
show, on 2/13 asked what is the
meaning of this Esperanto
sentence: "En la komenco, Dio
kreis la teron." On 3/14 contestant
Jim Ryan of Alexandria, VA,
mentioned that he speaks
Esperanto and finds it very useful
traveling in Europe and Asia.
Language Note: Herb Caen,
columnist in the San Francisco
Chronicle, 1/12, wrote that on a
recent flight a French flight
attendant annouced: "Velcome to
flight 006 nonstop from San
Francisco to Paris. Our flying
time to Paris will be ten minutes,
Zank you." It turned out to be ten
hours.
Transcript-Telegraph
(Holyoke, MA), 3/14/87, had a
lengthy interview with Sally
Lawton of Westhampton by staffer
Jerry Schrier who revealed that
Sally is giving more than 100
White Brook Middle School
students their first taste of a
foreign language via an
introduction to Esperanto. The
optional classes are held during
time set aside for band, chorus, or
study hall.
Part of the students'
motivation is that, once a year,
their school plays a hockey team
from Canada. The children
cannot communicate with the
French-speaking Canadians who
have been learning Esperanto.
The White Brook students decided
to meet them halfway by learning
Esperanto.
Mrs. Lawton is returning to
San Francisco State in July for
further training in Esperanto
teaching methodology.
Scituate (MA) Mariner,
3/26/87, carried an interview
with Gilman and Malcolm Wilder
by correspondent Mila Dixon. As
part of this year's celebration of
the Esperanto Centennial, Gil
Wilder gave a program during a
recent service at the First Parish
Unitarian Church, founded in
1634. He read Zamenhof s poem
La Espero with the English
translation read by Rev. Darrell E.
Berger.
Malcolm tells about an
experience in Hawaii last
February when he came to the
rescue of two Japanese tourists
puzzling over a bus schedule. This
was Malcolm's first opportunity to
try his Esperanto in an
international encounter. Both
brothers plan to return to San
Francisco State for advanced
Esperanto studies in July.
La Jolla (CA) Light, 3/12/87,
included an article by staff writer
Jeanne E. Beach that begins: "Leo
Tolstoy liked it; Marshal Tito of
Yugoslavia used it; Adolf Hitler
banned it as subversive. Today,
several million people speak it
and, in La Jolla, it was honored
with a birthday party.
"It is Esperanto, the universal
language created by L. L.
Zamenhof of Poland." The article
quotes Scripps Intitution of
Oceanography marine micro-
biologist, Dr. Ralph Lewin, and
Dr. David Jordan, professor of
anthropology at the University of
California in San Diego. Jordan:
"Esperanto is not evenly
distributed over the planet. In
Delhi (India), I couldn't find an
Esperantist to save myself. In
Korea, though, hospitable seems
too weak a word to use to describe
the people and the welcome they
gave."
The Gleaner (Jamaica),
featured an article on Esperanto
that brought in a lively reader
response through the first part of
March 1987, One writer made the
mistake of criticizing Esperanto,
showing an appalling lack of
knowledge about the language.
But when he stated there are no
swear words in Esperanto, he
went too far. The dam broke, and
letters poured in. Poor Mr.
Cargill, he had no idea, and A.
Ronai challenged: "His statement
that 'the best for a peaceful world
is to put distance between people,
not to get together' is disproved by
the efforts of the United Nations,
the Boy Scout movement, Rotary,
Lions, Kiwanis, the Olympics,
etc., who are imbued with an
international spirit and efforts for
peace."
Rome Radio lists among the 22
languages in its international
broadcasts (Albanian, Amharic,
Somalian, etc.) the regular use of
Esperanto. Note: UEA in the

provides a page of Esperanto
broadcasts rom various countries.

Frank Helmuth received 10
new postal students in March.
San Diego hosted the All-
California Esperanto
Conference April 17-19 at
Julian. The conference attracted
several beginners who report
receiving much help and
encouragement from the fluent
San Diegans.
MASSACHUSETTS
Easthampton
Sally Lawton was invited by
the principal of White River
Middle School to speak to 50
teachers at their monthly
meeting. She agreed to speak
about Esperanto to interested
students. As a result 150 children
elected to learn about Esperanto.
Together with the principal, she
worked out a plan to teach four
successive sessions to each of
eight groups.
North Scituate
First Unitarian Church,
founded in 1634, Rev. Darrell E.
Berger did a reading of "A
Peaceful Way" and Gil Wilder did
an Esperanto translation.
MICHIGAN
Kalamazoo
people meet every week to practice
Esperanto. The members discuss
grammar. One reads aloud a self-
written piece, while the others
listen for errors, giving advice to
the writer. The group welcomes
new members. John Starling
hosts the gatherings.
NEW HAMPSHIRE
Nashua
Grace Cali Feldstein is
teaching a small group. The
Nashua librarian invited her to
give a public talk on Esperanto,
April 14, at Chandler Library.
NEW YORK
New York City
Lydia Tabor, at a recent
club program, showed slides of
Poland. During her talk, she gave
candy to those who found her
grammatical errors. Julius
Balbin received the most candy.
Julius Balbin lectured
April 11th at the American Society
of Geolinguistics on "Esperanto as
the Catalyst of the Romanization
of Chinese."
Betty Manson, with the help
of Lillian Rachele, arranged an
Esperanto exhibit during a
conference of the United Parents
Association at the Javits Center.
Potsdam
Humphrey Tonkin,
President of New York State
University College at Potsdam, in
fall 1985, began teaching
Esperanto 101. Jane Edwards,
Potsdam's Director of
International Education, reports
that the class, which continues
through the spring semester,
meets three times weekly and has
15 enrolled students and three
faculty members who regularly
attend class.
President Tonkin encourages
students to speak and to enjoy the
process of language learning. He
frequently takes the class out of
the classroom and generally
attempts to keep the proceedings
light-hearted. When he is unable
to meet with his class, Dr.
Edwards teaches it. "As far as I
know," she writes, "this is the first
time that Esperanto has been
taught as a regular course in the
SUNY system." (—from SUNY

NORTH CAROLINA
Columbus
Roberta McFarland
(former president of the Berkeley
(CA) Esperanto League) is
teaching Esperanto at the
Isothermal Community College.
In a local newspaper interview
she was quoted as saying that Dr.
Zamenhof, creator of Esperanto,
was an "ocultist" rather than
oculist. Perhaps it is better to use
the words ophthalmologist or just
simply eye doctor.
OHIO
Granville
Roger Blaine taught
Esperanto to 13 students at
Denison University.
UTAH
Salt Lake City
Charles Hall is teaching a
class of 14 students in the Jordan
School District. Mr. Hall was
interviewed by Michel Morrison
on radio KUTR about the
foundation of the Esperanto
Family History Society
(genealogy). Following the
interview in February the station
received many phone calls.

A New Medallion Created in
France for the Jubilee Year
The Ministry of Economics,
Finance, and Budget of France
has announced the appearance of
a special medallion honoring
Doctor L. L. Zamenhof. The
announcement (originally in
French) goes as follows: "La
Monnaie de Paris is producing a
medallion of Dr. Zamenhof, the
work of Serge Santucci. I have the
pleasure to offer this work to you,
hoping that it will be of interest to
the members of your association
especially on the occasion of the
Centennial of Esperanto and the
70th anniversary of the death of its
founder. On the front: A portrait of
L. L. Zamenhof based on a
photograph. Inscription:
'Ludoviko Lazaro Zamenhof.
1859-1917.' On the reverse: From
the points of the esperantist star
radiates the names of the five
continents in Esperanto,
Inscription: 'Esperanto La
Intemacia Lingvo 1887-1987.'
The size of the medallion is 68 mm
in diameter. The weight has not
been announced. The price for a
bronze edition is 122,26 FF; the
silver version costs 1282.50 FF.

News from UEA
Victor Sadler, former General
Director of the GO. of UEA and
recently member of the Board of
UEA has announced with regret
the necessity to end all his duties
in the movement immediately due
to heart disease. Sadler leaves his
work at UEA in good order and
can be consulted if the need arises.
The Board of Directors is
proposing to the Komitato that
William Auld be elected an
Honorary Member of UEA
Bojidar Popovic, Jozef Toczyski
and Ludoviko Kristiano Zaleski-
Zamenhof have also been
nomitated. Auld is well known to
many U.S. esperantists who have
participated in the courses at
SFSU during the early years of
those courses, when Auld taught
there.

The Esperanto-Propaganda
Asocio, to honor the co-founder of
Oomoto, has decided to establish
the "Premio Onisaburo Deguchi."
The award aims to bring
recognition to the most worthy
activities and projects in the area
of the use of Esperanto as a tool for
world peace. A commission of
judges, to be named by UEA's
Board of Directors, will give out
the award each year. The award
consists of a diploma and 4,000
guilders (approximately $2,000
US). The first award will be given
out in Warsaw.
By the beginning of April, more
than 4,000 individuals had signed
up for the World Esperanto
Convention in Warsaw. Many
more are expected. Detlev Blanke
and K. Rokicki will preside over
the Esperantology Conference;
Szerdahelyi will guide the Lerneja
Tago; speakers at the IKU will
include: Benczik, Eichhorn,
Hauger, Kawamura, Lewin,
Mallia, Meszaros, Vaitilavicius,
Wandel, and Wickstrom.
The 1987 Jarlibro went to the
printer at the beginning of April,
and should be sent to the members
in June. A new book catalog for
UEA will appear in 1987.
Osmo Buller has announced his
decision to resign as director of the
CO. of UEA in order to take on a
new position in Finland, a little bit
before the end of 1987. Those of us
who have worked xlosely with
UEA regret this a great deal,
because Osmo Buller has been a
most effective, unwavering, and
inevitably good-humored fellow
worker. We will feel the loss.

Konfesinde, ni esperantistoj estas
modesta aro. Ni ne fanfaronas. Kiam
oni laŭdas nin, ni restas senemociaj,
kiel la Grafo de Monte-Kristo, dum li
observas la aĉan Caderousse enrompi en
lian domon. Kaj se iu nin
komplimentas pri niaj grandaj kapabloj,
ni nur ellasas ĝenatan rideton, kaj
gentile tusetas: "Nu, nu, mi faris
nenion, mi ne indas..."
Sed homoj estas homoj. Kiam, de
malantaŭ la klubeja pordo, ni aŭdas la
prezidanton diri al la kursgvidanto: "N.
vere estas bonega esperantisto. Li estras
nian lingvon eĉ pli bone, ol Donkihoto
Rosinantan," io agrable pinĉas nian
koron, kaj rideto de prava fiero eklumas
sur nia vizaĝo.
Bedaŭrinde, kelkaj inter ni neniam
spertas tiun ĝojon. Cu ne foriginda
maljusteco? Kun la celo gin ripari, mi

kaj samokaze, ĉiun el ni, pri kelkaj
parol-turnoj, kiuj diskrete ŝovitaj en

ampleksigi ĉerpante el la verkoj de
Zamenhof, el la Proverbaro aŭ simple
el bona vortaro, kiel la Esperanto-franca

Kiam vi prezentos al via grupo
korespondanton vian, kial ne uzi jenan
belan zamenhofaĵon: "Li estas preskaŭ
mia frato: nepo de kuzo de onklo de
konato"?
Kaj kiam venos la momento prezenti
min, elektu do inter "Li ne estas el la
grandaj saguloj" kaj "Li ne eltrovis la
filozofian ŝtonon." Se mia vizaĝo
montros konsternon, ne sprimu^yian
miron per griza formulo, kiel "Cu vi ne
estas kontenta?"; demandu prefere: "Kial
vijaras tiel longan nazon?"
Ciuj membroj flustros inter si: "De
kie li do prenas tiujn viglajn
formulojn?" ĉefe se ili ĉi tion ne legis.
Tiel altiĝos via reputacio. Sed por
vere gin firmigi, mi konsilas doni la
lastan definitivan baton, kiam venos la
kelnero. Se vi tiam proklamos laŭte,
per pela idiomaĵo: "Ciuj glasoj je mia
kalkulo!", mi garantias al vi, ke vi
konos veran triumfon. Provu do.

Ciuj £i kursivaj vortoj pruvas, ke nur
la sono kaj la tono, sed ne ilia signifo
donas impreson pri la emocio de la
dirinto. Ili estas grandparte prenitaj el la
verkoj de Reto Rossetti (El la maniko)
kaj de Cezaro Rossetti (Kredu min,
sinjorinof). Ambaŭ aŭtoroj verkis
originale kaj klopodis redoni ĉiutagan
lingvo-uzon per vortoj pure Esperantaj.
Kelkaj tiaj esprimoj havas verŝajne
nacilingvan devenon, kiel ekz.
fulmotondro (germane: Donnerwetter),
kiu jam ricevis civitanan rajton.
Aparte, sed parenca kategorio de
emociaj vortoj kaj esprimoj estas la
insultoj, malbenoj, kaj aliaj esprimoj
de malrespekto. Sajnas, ke la azeno
estas internacia simbolo de stulteco kaj
malsaĝo, car en ĉiuj landoj oni
renkontas la insulton azenonl.
Ankaŭ la porko havas internacian
malbonan famon. Mi notis: Porko!,

Zagreb, 2-9 aŭgusto. En vivo kaj
evoluo de lingvo unu jarcento estas nur
eta tempa periodo por povi pritraksi
rezultojn. En la vivo kaj kulturo de la
neŭtrala planlingvo la unua jarcento
estas eĉ pli malgranda periodo. Tial, en

decembro 1859. (15.12.1859-
14.04.1917). Washington estis naskita

Nekrologe
Dr. S. Collum Gilfillan died
February 14th in his 98th year.
He was a longtime member of
the Los Angeles Esperanto
Society. In 1909 he attended the
Fifth Universal Esperanto
Convention in Barcelona. Dr.
Gilfillan is survived by his
daughter, Barbara Crowley,
a Los Angeles attorney.

Sally Lawton:
Model for the
Future
Sally Lawton has often found
mention in the pages of the ELNA
Newsletter. And for good reason.
She has been a vital and energetic
force in the Esperanto Society of
New England, one of the most
successful regional Esperanto
organizations in the United States.
One of her chief activities is in the
H field of education. In the photo to
1 the left, Ms. Lawton shares her
love of languages with students at
Easthampton (MA) White Brook
Middle School, teaching the basics
of Esperanto.

Chicago Sun Times staffer
Andrew Herrmann interviewed
R. Kent Jones of the Chicago
Esperanto Society about the
Esperanto Centennial. Observing
that the International Language
"hasn't exactly hit the world with
agranda eksplodo," Herrmann
writes that "Jones counters every
nattering naysayer with 'a 100
years is a mere blink in history."'
The Telegraph (Nashua,
NH), 4/9, and The Lowell
(MA) Sun, 4/12, both carried an
extensive interview with Grace
Cali, a journalist who was active
in the Esperanto movement in
Puerto Rico before moving to
Nashua. She presented a program
on Esperanto at the Chandler
Memorial Library and Ethnic
Center in Nashua on April 14th
and is now teaching a course.
In a 20-year journalism
career, Mrs. Cali was a staff
writer for the San Juan Star (PR)
and for Caribbean Business,
entertainment critic for El Mundo
and educational services director
for the Austin American
Statesman (TX). Prior to her
career in journalism, Mrs. Cali
served as personal secretary and
editorial assistant to theologian-
philosopher Paul Tillich at
Harvard University.

Orcas Island
NOREK, the Pacific
Northwest Esperanto group, held
its spring conclave at Orcas
Island. Wally du Temple of the
Victoria BC club, organized the
program and was the keynote
speaker.
Occurring at the spring
equinox, it was the perfect setting
for Jim Deer's Mondvida Tago
program. Readings, poetry, and a
solo by Martha Deer gave beauty to
the occasion.
Dave Richardson, former
president of ELNA and a TV
engineer on the island, mentioned
in his talk, that Outlook Inn, site
of the conference, played a role in
the early days of Esperanto when
Richard Geoghegan, British
Consul in Washington state, lived
in Eastsound. Geoghegan made
the second translation of
Zamenhof s Unua Libro dor
English speakers. This second
version is the one approved by
Zamenhof. He was one of the
pioneer promoters of Esperanto
among English speakers.

oni komisiis al kvar soldatoj, antaŭaj
partizanoj nove rekrutitaj en la armeon,
grimpi al la supro por kontroli pri
kondiĉoj inter la preskaii nekonataj tieaj
loĝantoj.
La kvar soldatoj neniam revenis, kaj
kvar jarojn poste, longe post la
militfino, oni sendis Majoron Reman
por enketi pri la sorto de la perditaj
soldatoj. Lia enketo inter la izolitaj
vilaĝanoj, kaj la sorto de la soldatoj en
ilia stranga societo, konsistigas la
intrigon de ĉi tiu romano. La temo, aŭ
temoj, kompreneble estas, Mel ordinare
ĉe Nemere, pli yastaj: la komparo inter
nia soeieto kaj tute primitiva, tamen
unike sukcesa, societo; kaj la efiko de
fremda influo je tiu lasta, precipe kun la
ideo, ke "el perforto naskiĝas perforto."
Mi opinias, ke ĉi tiu estas pli frua
romano de Nemere, eble verkita
originate en la hungara kaj nur
lastatempe esperantigita. Kvankam ne
troviĝas indiko pri tio sur la titolpaĝo,
la datoj 1979-1980 fine de la romano
estas almenaŭ sugestivaj. Cetere, la
legarto baldati rimarkas, ke la
rakontmaniero estas pli faeila—pli
"primitiva", se vi preferas, komencante
komence kaj finante fine. La tuta
historic rakontiĝas el la vidpunkto de
Majoro Reman dum lia enketado inter
la iomege malparolemaj vilaĝanoj.
La romanon mi trovis bone verkita,
sed min iom genis unu sufiĉe grava
nekonsekvencaĵo. Nome, kial la
vilaĝanoj tiom rifuzis klarigi al Reman
la aferon pri la malapero de la soldatoj?
Evidentiĝis, ke ili ne multe timis la

montriĝis, ke ili sentis neniom da
honto pri tiu afero. La sola pravigo por
tio estas, ke, se la vilaĝanoj frue
klarigus, la romano estus nur 15-paĝa.
La prezento de la libro estas iom pli
bela ol tiu de, ekzemple, Febroj; la
kartona kovrilo estas pli fortika, kaj la
bildo estas tre klare desegnita.
Aliflanke, kelkaj paĝoj estas preskau
nelegeble palaj. Ankaŭ gregas la
kutimaj preseraroj, kiuj amase difektis
Febroj. Aparte mislegiga estas tiu
duobla eraro malsupre de paĝo 63: "La
besto certe ekflavis la adoron de la
ejoj..." (ekflaris la adoron?).
Sume: libro entute ne tiel bona Mel,
ekzemple, La Blinda Birdo aŭ Febroj,
tamen leginda kaj plezure legebla.

Tiu £i mallonga romaneto, reliefigas

Not Everyone
Speaks English!
An article titled "He Who Speak
with Knifed Tongue Can't Cut It
Abroad" in the journal Notes on
Western Civilization observes:
"Americans who travel abroad for
the first time are often shocked to
discover that despite all the
progress that has been made in
the last 30 years, many foreign
people still speak in foreign
languages. Oh sure, they speak
some English, but usually just
barely well enough to receive a
high school diploma here in the
United States. This can lead to
problems for you, the
international traveler, when you
need to convey important
information to them, such as:
'Which foreign country is this?' or
"You call this toilet paper?'
"To their credit, some countries
have made a sincere effort to adopt
English as their native language,
a good example being England,
but even there you have problems.
My wife and I were driving
around England once, and we
came to a section called Wales,
which is this linguistically
deformed area that apparently is
too poor to afford vowels. All the
road signs look like this:

"But the point I am trying to
make here is that, since the rest of
the world appears to be taking its
sweet time about becoming fluent
in English, it looks like, in the
interest of world peace and
understanding, it's up to us
Americans to learn to speak a
