LIBRARY NEWS
Helping Alma Mater and Esperanto
Two Esperantists have recently donated sums of -$100 each
to the libraries of their "alma maters" through the ELNA
Central Office for the purchase of books in and about
Esperanto.
The CO sent notices of the donation to the universities along
with special catalogues of suggested books. The universities
were grateful for the donations and, in one case, the university
library ordered books in excess of the credit provided by the
donation.
To readers desiring to make similar gifts the ELNA office
will gladly furnish details upon request.
University of Oregon Library (Eugene) announces the comple-
tion of cataloguing of the George A. Connor Esperanto
Collection (approximately 2500 books) donated by Mrs. Doris
Tappan Connor.
The work was completed in one and one-half years by
graduate student librarians Karin Smith and Susan Haake. The
catalogue costs $5 and is available from Edward Kemp,
Acquisitions-Special Collections, University of Oregon Library",
Eugene, OR 97403.
Public Library Cochranton, PA featured an Esperanto display
during March arranged by Display Chairman, Conrad Fisher.
Fort Worth Public Library issues its lively monthly events
bulletin also in an Esperanto translation by Michael Jones.
International Esperanto Museum, located in the Austrian
National Library, Vienna, in its first quarter 1979 Informilo
traces the very impressive fifty-year history of the Museum
which is supported by the Austrian Government and Esperant-
ists. Visitors to Vienna will find there the largest collection of
Esperanto books and memorabilia in the world. Subscribers to

SKOLTA MONDO, the Esperanto magazine for Scouts (Jan.
1978) reported: "In south Ireland there are two boy and two
girl scout organizations, one "open" and one Catholic for each
sex."
SKOLTA MONDO (Feb. 1978) shows a Norwegian girl scout
adjusting the slide on the neckerchief of a boy scout. Below the
photo appears the text: "Until now there were three scout
associations in Norway, one for the girls who belong to the
YWCA and a neutral one for other girls, as well as a neutral
one for all boys. Now the latter two are united. Boys in the
YMCA have their own scout association."

NOTE: In the 1908 edition of Scouting for Boys, Lord Robert
Baden-Powell, founder of the scout movement, recommended
that scouts learn and use Esperanto for international contacts.

ESPERANTO, ENGLISH FEET, METRIC' TOES is the heading
above a Setter in the Chronicle of Higher Education (undated)
by Bruce A. Sherwood, Asst. Director, Computer-Based
Education, Research Laboratory and Associate Professor of
Physics, University of Illinois-Urbana. Responding to an
unthinking statement in a January 22 article on the metric
system in which it was stated, "...it's a lot quicker and easier
to let some of the world learn English than it is to require the
whole world to learn a brand new language." Mr. Sherwood
asks: "Quicker and easier for whom?"
Continuing, he says "There are approximately 350 million
native speakers of English. If we don't have to study foreign
languages but 3650 million foreigners have to study English for
four years, the total educational effort is 14,600 million
man-years. If, on the other hand, all 4,000 million humans
agree to- study Esperanto for one year, the educational effort
reduces drastically to 4,000 million man-years, less than
one-third the effort! Moreover, this would be a much fairer
arrangement, eliminating a heavy burden on non-English
speakers and the discriminatory privileges granted to native
English speakers, who are already privileged in other ways. It
is not efficiency that has propelled English, but power.
With...the increasing claim of other languages for their
place...we will be forced to agree to learn Esperanto, just as
others were forced in the past to learn English."
The Guardian (London) Dec. 8, 1978 carried an article
indicating that Esperanto is alive and well in England where
about 1,000 children are learning the international language,
and 74 members of the House of Commons have formed an
Esperanto Parliamentary Group. Estimating that use of
Esperanto as a second common language would cut by 55%
the amount which the European Parliament now spends on
translating and at the UN by 52 million Pounds a year, the
article states further:"...it is only the most cynical who point
out that the previous occasions when Esperanto looked ready
for the great breakthrough were followed by World Wars One
and Two."
A vigorous public information campaign by the British
Esperanto Association has resulted in programs about Esper-
anto including 13 on TV, 9 daily national newspapers, 17
interviews on national radio, 31 local radio interviews and 13
articles in regional dailies.
ESPERANTO HAS A WORD FOR IT. THE CANADIAN (Feb.
17) a weekly magazine, in a full page on Esperanto, cited the
unique word-building possible in Esperanto - everything from
the "invented" word "edzo" (husband) and that universally
sought "necessary place",' the "necesejo" (the toilet).

Oregon State University - Corvallis is offering a one-credit
Esperanto Course in the spring University Honors Program
under the direction of Carleton W. Carroll of the Dept. of
Foreign Languages and Literature.
"The International Communications of Service Club Associa-
tions" is the subject of a public forum at Chicago YMCA
Bldg., 29 W. Randolph St., May 4. Speakers will be
representatives of Lions, Kiwanis,,and Rotary Clubs, according
to Janet Bixby, President, Esperanto Society of Chicago.
Chicago Sun Times, April 19 reported a suit on behalf of a
Chinese man held in Illinois mental institutions for 28 years.
He was diagnosed severely retarded by a doctor who spoke
only English and Spanish. No, Virginia, they don't all speak
English.
Typewriters and Esperanto supersigns. Smith-Corona has a
changeable type selection at $2 per unit, according to John
Massey and Ward Giannini who've checked on this. IBM
Selectric provides various supersigns on its "library" ball.
COIN WORLD INTERNATIONAL Dec. 27, 1978 pictures the
one-stelo bronze Esperanto coin.
THE PHILATELIC JOURNALIST offered a "Cachet for
International Friendship Week." Featured is a green and black
cacheted cover with the clasped hands emblem and the words
"Friendship Across Borders" in English and Esperanto. These

WINDFALL (Vol. 3, No. 1, Winter 1978), a literary anthology,
published for faculty and students of Northeast Missouri State
University, carried a short article about Esperanto by Tom
Reid.

WILL THEY BE READY?
In a New York Times article James Reston writes of the
6-year-olds who entered first grade in Fall 1978. They will be
33 at the end of the 20th century "...and the assumption is
that they will then be ready to meet the problems of a new
century.
"But will they be ready? This depends largely on whether
they are educated for the world that is coming or for the world
that is going... In the field of education, the 21st century is
now."
Edwin O. Reischauer, professor of history at Harvard and
former United States Ambassador to Japan, in a new book,
Toward the 21st Century - Education for a Changing World
revives the question previously asked by H.G. Wells, How are
we to educate for the future rather than for the past?
SIGNS OF AWAKENING
The President's Commission on Foreign Language and
International Studies was appointed by President Carter on
Sept. 15, 1978, for the purpose of recommending ways to
strengthen and improve the study of foreign language and
international studies in four areas: public awareness, needs for
language and area specialists, appropriate study programs for
all educational levels, and resources and legislation required to
accomplish the task. A final report is to be presented to the
President in October, 1979.
Public meetings and hearings are being held in several
major American cities. ELNA members were present at a
public meeting in New York and at regional hearings in
Chicago, San Francisco, and Houston. Future hearings will be
held in Raleigh and Boston, and final meetings will be held in
Washington, DC.
In addition to oral presentations, ELNA prepared a dossier to
be presented to each member of the Commission, containing a
position statement of ELNA and of AATE, and several articles
relating to the educational value of Esperanto.

The   Southeastern    Regional    Hearing   of   the   President's
Commission on Foreign Language and international Studies at
Raleigh NC April 12-13 was attended by Gizella Edwards who
teaches Esperanto at the Learning Center for the Gifted,
Tampa Florida, and Prof. Eugene H. Thompson representing
Guilford College, Greensboro NC. The Rev. Timothy S. Healy,
President of Georgetown University presided and Humphrey
Tonkin, President of the Universal Esperanto Association,
represented the International Studies program at the University
of Pennsylvania. Esperanto was well represented during the
hearings.

Esperanto.
En la majo-junio numero de Newsletter mi raportos, lau la
Statuta devigo, ĉiujn decidojn de la Estraro kaj la Prezidanto
ekde la lasta tia raporto. Mi urĝas al ciuj ELNA-anoj, ke ili
ĉeestu la jarkunvenon ce San Francisco State por tie diskuti
gravajn planojn por la estonteco. Estrara kunsido okazos dum
tiu kongreso, kaj kiel en la pasinteco, la kunsidoj de via Estraro
estas malfermaj al ciuj membroj de la Ligo. Ni bonvenigas
ĉeestantojn.
Al ĉiu membro la CO enpoŝtigis lastan semajnon la novan
Adresaron, biografian informon pri la kandidatoj, balotilon, kaj
informilon-aliĝilon por la ELNA Kongreso en 1979. Nepre nun
planu veni al bela San Francisco por partopreni la kongreson.
La programo estos interesa, kaj la ekskursoj estis speciale
elektitaj de la LKK-Estrino, Cathy Schulze, esti nemultekostaj
kaj allogaj. La logkosto ĉe San Francisco State estas ja
bonaĉeto, kompare kun la loĝkosto en preskaŭ iu hotelo en

Maria Gerson, M.D., Prezidanto de Boston Esperanto-Klubo
en majo vizitas Hamburgon kiel ambasadoro de bonvolo por la
urbo Boston. La diversaj ambasadoroj kunvojagantaj estos
gastoj en familioj de Hamburgo kun similaj profesioj. En kvar
tagoj kun unu familio ili reciproke lernos pri kulturo; en postaj

TRADUKiLOJ
Lastatempe du grandaj usonaj kompanioj pretendas eldoni
tradukilojn por la ordinara vojaganto.   Ne temas pri  grandaj
tradukmasinoj, kiuj plenigas tutan cambron, sed pri malgrandaj
enmanigeblaj masinoj, kiel poskalkuliloj, kiujn oni povas utiligi
por transsalti la lingvan barilon.
Unu ei tiuj masinoj estas la LEXICON LK-3000; la alia estas
la CRAiG TRANSLATOR. Ambau proponas la lingvojn his-
panan, francan, italan, germanan, kaj japanan; la LK-3QQ0
krome havebligas la portugalan, rusan, kaj grekan. La LK-3000
kostas $225 kun unu lingvo; memoraroj kun aldonaj lingvoj
kostas po $65. La Translator kostas $199.95 kun anglalingva
kartuco; ekstraj kartucoj kostas po $24.95.
Mi ankorau ne vidis unu el tiuj tradukiloj, sed lau la
reklamoj ili sajnas esti sufice superaj al simpla Berlitz-frazaro,
almenau pro tio, ke estas tre facile trovi vorton au frazon. La
uzanto devas nur altajpi la § ustan vorton en la angla lingvo,
kaj la traduko en la celolingvo aperas sur la malgranda
(unulinia) ekrano. La tradukiloj ec donas al la uzanto la
kapablon elekti inter du signifoj de la sama anglalingva vorto.
Tamen la masinoj ne estas tie! utilaj, kiel la reklamoj volas
onin kredigi. La Craig-reklamo insistas, ke "oni povas ...
laulitere konversacii, ne dirante eĉ unu vorton." Per 50 frazoj
kaj 7000 unuopaj vortoj??? Permesu, ke mi iomete dubu!
Unuavice, oni bezonas iom da imagokapablo por povi starigi
demandojn au respondojn en lingvo, kies gramatikon oni ne
konas. Similan imagokapablon oni devas atendi ĉe la nekonata
respondanto.
Duavice, la fabrikintoj ne klarigas, kion fari, se la uzanto
renkontas homon, kiu estas analfabeta, kaj ne povas legi la
vortojn sur la ekrano.
Eble pli tauga uzo estus por la studado de iu fremda lingvo.
Pere de la masino, oni povas parkeri vortaron kaj ekzameni sin
pri tio. Tiamaniere, la "tradukiloj" povas farigi-vere valoraj
por la studanto de alilandaj lingvoj.

MatematikO'kaj Esperanto en Texas
Michael Jones parolis 6-apriIon en Lubbock TX ce la
jarkunveno de Texas Filio de la Matematika Asocio de Usono.
pri la temo: Matematiko kaj Esperanto. Lia gastiganto estis
D-ro Fred O. Meyer III. Jones estas unu el la Esperanto-
motoroj en Texas kie li gvidas kursojn, tradukas Esperanten
bultenojn de la Ft. Worth Publika Biblioteko, aktivas pri
ŝak-aferoj. Li eldonis artikolon "La Nejacionaleco de la
Kvadrata Radiko de 2" pri kiu li diras ke "Gi estas klasika kaj
ĉie instruata matematikaĵo, kaj la en-Esperanta artikolo,
estante kaj la plej profunda traktado de tiu ĉi temo en la
mondo kaj estante eĉ senkopirajta, povas efike helpi en ĉiuj
matematik-klasoj en la mondo."
Ne depost la Konferenco de UNESKO en Montevideo en
1954 okazis pli streca strebado por Esperanto ol faris Vilma
Eichholz dum decembro 1978. En la Kanada Esperanto-Revuo
LUMO printempo, 1979, S-ino Eichholz priskribis sian agadon
okaze de la Asembleo de la Asocio por Mondkonstitucio kaj
Mondparlamento (AMM) kie si pledis por enkonduko de
Esperanto. Tiun partoprenon ebligis la eminenta S-ino Dorothy
Henderson, kiu finance subtenis la vojag-kostojn por S-ino
Eichholz.
Zorge preparante la kampanjon, S-ino Eichholz instruis du
grupojn de personoj per la Cseh metodo en 14 lecionoj. Inter la
kursanoj estis juristo, D-rino de lingvistiko, lernejestro, k.a.
Poste en malgranda kunsido, hinda parlamentano, S-ro Kamath
petis ke s-ino Eichholz diru ion en Esperanto. Skribis s-ino
Eichholz, "Mi elektis legi la por ĉiuj en la angla bone konatan
komenton de la Mondkonstitucio. Post tio mi proponis ke ili
mem spertu kianivele oni post 14 lecionoj povas lerni
Esperanton.
"Mi petis tiucele skribi kelkajn anglajn frazojn sur paperoj
kiujn-mi post silenta tralego laute tradukos esperanten...kaj la
gekursanoj proves retraduko...ang!en. Tio okazis. Senhezite ili
kune tradukis kaj...la ĉeestantoj konstatis kun miro la
korektecon de la retradukoj."
Kvankam s-ino Eichholz jam en Kanado petis permeson
alparoli la Asembleon venis la lasta tago de la konferenco sen
sukceso. Plendante al Helen Tucker, iama prezidanto de Voco
de Virinoj en Kanado, s-ino Tucker petis rajton diri finan
vorton en la nomo de la Virina Komitato. "Emfazante la
neceson de protektado de virinaj rajtojli menciis, ke 'ankau en
ci tiu organizo, virino kiu dufoje lauorde submetis rezolucion,
ne ricevis la rajton prezenti gin al diskutado. Kiel membro de
Asemblea Gvidantaro kaj kiel estrino de la Virina Komitato, mi
petas la Asemblean Prezidantaron, ke ni gustigu tion, malgrau
la malfrua horo.' " S-ino Eichholz ricevis permeson legi la
rezolucion sed ne restis tempo por gin diskuti.
Poste si renkontis d-ron Mercieca kaj esprimis seniluziigon
ke oni volis sovi Esperanton sur neuzitan trakon kie gi mortu.
Lia respondo estis: "Tute ne, car mi ja estas la estro de la
Eduka Komitato. Se okazus lau mia volo, ni dum venonta
Asembleo ciuj parolos Esperante." Certe al la virinoj s-inoj
Henderson, Eichholz kaj Tucker la Esperantistaro suldas multe
pro la fortaj streĉoj. Cu eventoj de la estonteco kronos ilian
grandan laboron per sukceso?

'CROCODILE' AN ENDANGERED SPECIES!
Summer 1979 offers 48 consecutive days - a month and a
half - of continuous exposure to Esperanto. This is the most
comprehensive program to date in which San Francisco State
University has participated:
25 June - 13 July: Tenth annual Esperanto courses, San
Francisco State University; includes basic course for gifted

With a call to "Stamp out 'Crocodiles' " Dr. David Jordan
(University of California - San Diego) has designed the summer
courses toward that end. In a speech before the national
convention of Alpha Mu Gamma, a language honor society, at
Thousand Oaks, CA on April 7, Dr. Jordan said inr part:
"Actually I suspect that three weeks of intensive exposure to a
language that a smart high school student can actually learn in
that time is probably a good investment since it sensitizes one
to all sorts of aspects of language, linguistics, and sociolin-
guistics (as well as the international order) that one wouldn't
begin to get studying another language where progress would
be much slower, and the experience confined pretty much to
first and second year textbooks... "
