LOCAL CLUBS
Esperanto Society of Chicago, PO Box 11958, Chicago IL should
be contacted at that address for information on meetings and
classes, according to Pres. Robert Runser.
Seattle Esperanto Society arranged a Cable TV program with Dr.
Harry Weiner, Jim Parks, and student Yumi Oshita of
Hiroshima. Elizabeth Stafford regularly reports on classes and
activities.
Esperanto Association of Central Ohio presents a model for
community activity. Chris Littler reports on cooperation by
district Esperantists with many civic organizations. For example,
the UN Festival brought new students to the Spring Esperanto
class. ELNA member Ruth Browning is president of the
Columbus UNA Chapter. EACO is a member of the International
Council of Mid-Ohio, a clearinghouse for the exchange of ideas
on internaional themes, provides many services including a
Handbook for International Visitors, a Catalogue of Interna-
tionally-Oriented Services and Activities; cooperation with ethnic
groups.
The Council's goal is to produce an informed free citizenry and
much more. ELNA member John Massey is an Esperantist
Language Bank Volunteer.
TWO RECOMMENDED CORRESPONDENCE COURSES
ELNA's Correspondence Course is administered by Dorothy
Holland who also directs ELNA's Examination Service. Over the
years the Correspondence Course has produced some of our most
successful Esperantists. Write ELNA for application form.
Canadian Esperanto Course. Our Canadian neighbors are
offering a course designed by Alex Philip, an expert Esperantist
and pedagogue. The course was commissioned by the British
Columbia Ministry of Education, Correspondence Branch,
Victoria, BC, Canada V8T 4WB.
It covers Beginner's Esperanto (18-paper course). Write the
Director at the above address and ask for "Application Form S.C.
1."
NOTE: No textbook is required. A cassette recorder is necessary.
Two blank cassettes are needed for recording the student's voice.
Rock Springs, Wyoming. H.J. Anderson, Director of Sweetwater
County Dept. of Public Assistance and Social Services, is also
instructor of the first Esperanto course at Western Wyoming
Community College. We hope to welcome Mr. Anderson and his
students at the ELNA Convention in San Francisco in July.
Williams Ambassador, alumni paper from Cathy Schulze's alma
mater in New London, CT, carried an item by Cathy thanking the
school where she first learned about Esperanto. So far this has
produced an inquiry from an interested alumna living in
California.
ESPERANTO IN THE MEDIA
LA Times-Washington Post writer Robert F. Levey's article on
Esperanto has appeared across the country. Latest clippings sent
by readers are from: Cleveland Plain Dealer, Chicago Sun-Times,
Portland Oregonian, Japan Times Weekly.
From Cheese Dip to Reykjavik - a feature article in the La Jolla
Light Sept. 7, 1978 by Alberta Seabold Casey begins in the
cafeteria at the University of London in the summer of 1971. She
wandered into the college cafeteria during the annual Esperanto
Convention and was surrounded by hundreds of Esperanto
speakers from all over the world. Impressed with its practicality,
she came home to La Jolla, enrolled in a class. To tell others, she
arranged informal parties and organized study groups, employ-
ing lots of cheese dip in the process. A trained mezzo-soprano,
Alberta has been invited again to sing at the world convention in
Lucerne next summer. Her record of popular songs in Esperanto,
AL VI DE Ml (including La Vie en Rose, Over the Rainbow, et a!)
is heard all over the world.
A Sandy (Oregon) Post feature article (Sept. 7, 1978) on Conn
and Mary Murray led to an invitation to teach a class. A long and
distinguished career which led to friendships all over the world
makes them inspiring and valuable instructors.
The Sydney, Australia Morning Herald last summer carried a
lively letter exchange on Esperanto. R. G. Robertson, president
of the New South Wales Esperanto Federation, wrote that those
whose lives are "littered with broken languages need not
abandon hope" and testified to practical use he has made of
Esperanto in world travels. A. J. Cocking, president of the Manly
Esperanto Club, wrote: "I have heard Esperanto lectures on such
diverse topics as The Principle of the Autogyro, Pity the Fat Man,
Perhaps It's Not His Fault, The Use of Solar Energy, How to be
Happy Though Married, The Problems of the Paraplegic, My
Favourite Funny Poems, and The Art of Public Speaking.
Esperanto may be used by the academic and the "man on the
street." A young man could use it to write a love letter or his
thesis for a Doctorate of Philosophy."

Radio Warsaw — Now, courtesy of the sunspot cycle,
Esperantists in the Northeastern United States can enjoy the
perfect Esperanto phonetics and style in broadcasts daily at 11:00
-11?39 A.M. or midnight EST. The frequency is 9540 KH in the
31-meter band. Unless you have direct frequency readout, look
for Radio Habana on 9550 kHz, then tune slightly to the left. At
midnight, the best frequency is 7270 kHz in the 41-meter band
where there is some interference with U.S. radio amateurs. To
find it, try for the Canadian time signal station CHU which
announces time in English and French every minute on 7335 kHz.
Then tune about 7 stations to the left of that. In midwinter, a
better choice might be 3955 kHz in the 75-meter band just to the
right of BBC London at 3952.5 kHz.

Radio iio de Janeiro (Brazil) broadcasts in Esperanto every
Sunday under the direction of Affonso B.G. Scares. In a recent
broadcast, Voice of America gave tribute in Esperanto to Dr.
William Solzbacher who retired this year after long years of
service with Voice of America in Washington, DC. Dr. Solzbacher
is an active member of ELNA and UEA and has long served in the
Academy of Esperanto.

Chicago Sun-Times on J une 26, 1978 carried Kent Jones's letter
stressing that Esperanto was created to "eliminate those human
problems that arise from language confusion between ethnic
groups." He stated that "multilateral language ignorance has
frustrated human accomplishment" and "generated friction and
paralyzed the transfer of knowledge."
The Gallup, NM Progress on Sept. 28, 1978 extensively
interviewed Roan Orloff Stone about her world travels in an
article titled "Universal Language — We Need It Now."
in  One  Language  for  the   World,   first  edition,   Mario  Pei
[1901-1978] asked:
"What would happen if all the children in the world learned
another language along with their own? Not just another
language, but the same language?"

La krucvortenigmoj de Marĉek kaj Markovic estas konstante

Inter la plej pensinstigaj klasikajoj el la angla literaturo
trovigas la Utopia satira romanco de Samuel Butler (1835-1902),
Erewhon. La titolo de la originalo estas renverso de la angla vorto
"Nowhere" (nenie).
Butler estis filo de pastro kaj nepo de episkopo de la anglikana
eklezio. La dedicita misiemo de tiamaj Kristanoj kolorigas la
monologojn kiuj povus esti tedigaj, se la rakonto kaj
priskribkapablo de la autoro ne estus tiom interesigaj. La majstra
traduko de Venture ne nur retenas guste la enhavon kaj nuancojn
de la originalo, sed ec helpas forigi iom da la sekeco de la
originalo, kiu estis eldonita antau pli ol cent jaroj, kaj estis verkita
lau la polvokovrita, rigida stilo de tiu tempo.
La rakonto mem estas genie elpensita: juna brito, laborante en
lando ne specifigita sed versajne novzelando, serĉas novan
safopastejon por sia propra entrepreno, kaj veturante en
nekonatan regionon renkontas tre strangan socion. La moroj kaj
kutimoj en "Erevono" (cu ni dim Esperante einen?) estas sajne
la renverso de tiuj en la tiama "civilizita" mondo; sed ju pli la
vizitanto enketas en la efikojn kaj kaŭzojn de tiuj strangaj
kutimoj, des pli li konstatas paralelojn kun laveraj sociaj moroj de
la okcidento; t.e., veraj, kompare kun la leĝoj kaj kutimoj
lajnigataj veraj en la jugejoj kaj regularoj de nia socio.
En Erevono, malsaneco estas krimo; la al nia socio
"malmoralaj krimoj" estas tie traktataj de kuracistoj, samkiel ni
traktas fizikan malsanon. Prezidas tie la "Kolegioj de la
Malracio" kaj la "Muzikaj Bankoj", kiuj lastaj ebligas al Butler
pentri trafajn aludojn al la rob de mono kaj bankoj en nia propra
socio.
Kvankam ci tiu ne estas la facile legebla romanstila verko tiom
satata de Usonanoj, tamen gi estas valora verko, kiun ciu
seriozmensa homo devus legi almenau unu fojon dum la vivo.
Certe ciu serioza Esperantisto alte taksos la tradukon de Alec
Venture, kaj taksos la libron kostmerita.
Bonege presita, la libra enhavas tre malmultajn preserarojn.
Erevono devus esti en ĉies librobretaro.

Tiel mi sekvis la karieron de William Auld gis en 1970 li akceptis
instrui la kursojn somere ce San Francisco Stat-Universitato. Mi
atendis lian alvenon kun scivolo cu la viro egalos sian famon.

Nun venas al ni modesta libreto en kiu trovigas 16 poemoj. Li
dediĉis kelkajn al pamasuloj kaj amikoj.
Al Kalocsay: "...Triste, mute, sentante ombra la parnason, mi
adiaue levas glason salute."
Al Juan Regulo Perez: "...Konu min peka, jes, sed sciu krome,
ke mi admiras vin Some."
Al Raymond Schwartz: "La ciuspece spica libro/plenas de
autentika vibro,/kaj ĉiu pago dudekfoje/sukcesis min ridigi
goje."
Kelkaj Usonanoj proponis sufikson "ab" (el la hebrea) por eviti
"seksismon" en Esperanto. Auld serce uzis gin en "Letero al
Catherine Schulze" en la vorto Cindrulabo "vira (aba?) formo de
Cindrulino." [Red. noto: cu angle "Cinderfella"?]
En "Vojagalbumo" li priskribis unikajn impresojn de Japanujo
speciale en Osaka kie,  dank' al  la internacia lingvo,   li  guis
varman argumentadon pro opinio-malkonsento - "Cifoje tamen
Koro ankau al koro malfermiĝis."
Entute, kontentige oni frandas tiun ĉi verkon de homo en kiu
fontanas la vivo-sukoj.

The international Civil Aviation Organization [ICAO], one of the
specialized organizations of the United Nations, has decided that
the English language must divide its privileged position with
three other languages, according to a resolution adopted during
the 22nd session of the General Assembly of ICAO at the end of
1977 in Montreal.
In the future, the Commission for Air Navigation must
accommodate the spoken and written use of four working
languages: English, French, Spanish, and Russian. The
commission issued unmistakeably firm instructions that the
exclusive use of English must be superseded by the use of the
four languages mentioned. While this represents a laudable
attempt, however modest, to overcome linguistic discrimination,
the financial burden imposed by this step is considerable. In
1976, ICAO spent $4,000,000 for language services - one-fourth
of that year's total budget.
Banning English in New Delhi —An article in the San Francisco
Chronicle (Oct. 6, 1978) by Prakash Chandra appears the
following: "The teaching of English will be taboo in India if the
country's 60 million untouchable Hindus have their way. They
are the latest to join the 'ban English' brigade. Their leader,
Jagjivan Ram, Minister of Defense, has announced that his
people will agitate to banish English and, according to Ram, the
Hindu slogan will be 'banish English and replace it with Indian
languages' ... a move which could cause considerable difficulty,
since India has 15 official languages. The teaching of English in
India's public schools is reportedly already on a decline and
officials say that the student standard of English today is far
lower than a decade ago."
SPANGUSH IS SPEAKEADO IN EL NEW YORK CITY
According to an AP release in The Citizen, Ottawa, Canada,
Sept. 7, 1978, "Spanglish is a continuous code-switching" (what
Esperantists call 'crocodiling') --according to Dr. Gary Keller,
professor of Hispanic linguistics at the City University of New
York and author of three books on Spanglish. "As it stands, at
least one thing can be said - que only el tiempo will tell if el
Spanglish is here to stay."
