, ™ Htmumii NEWS OF THE LANGUAGE PROBLEM AND ESPERANTO AS A SOLUTION Published by the Esperanto League for North America. November-December 1974. Editor: Charles R. L. Power. Editorial Committee: Robert Bailey, Margaret Hagler, Dorothy Holland, Jonathan Pool. Includes section in Esperanto, Bulteno, sent to ELNA members only. " ' League's acceptance of the invitation. The School for International Training is among the top handful of this country's cen- ters for foreign language instruction, having the U. S. Peace Corps among its more important clients. A more favorable setting for an ELNA Congress could hardly be imagined. It is located in lovely Brattleboro, Vermont. The Congress will take place over a three- day weekend, 15-17 August (Friday through Sunday) 1975. Those who can are invited to stay for a special program of Esperanto in- struction. The program will consist of several small classes of about ten students apiece, lasting four days, 18-21 August (Monday through Thurs- day). The individual classes will be struc- tured to fit the needs of their participants. All students will enjoy 24-hour access to the language laboratory. Costs will be delightfully moderate. Tentatively announced room and board are $13 daily for those sharing a room and $16 with a single room. The Congress fee is to be announced. The instruction program after the Congress will have a total cost of $70, inclu- sive of room and board. More news and a Congress application will appear in these pages soon. Audiolingual study at the. School for International Training takes many forms: small classes, unlimited sessions in modern laboratories, research in the library, conversation over dinner trays, or just "fanning the breeze" in dormitory lounges and rooms. ELNA to Meet in Brattleboro As was announced last issue, the School for International Training, an educational facility under the auspices of the Experiment Tn International Living, has issued an invi- tation to ELNA' s twenty-third annual Congress. It is with great pleasure that we announce the MLA Seminars in Third Year Esperantist members of the Modern Language Association will be able to attend two semi- nars concerning the international language at this year's Annual Meeting in New York City, 26-29 December 1974. Seminar 51, "Esperanto Language and Lit- erature", will have Margaret Hagler (Lincoln Land Community College, Illinois), author of The Esperanto Language as a Literary Medium, as discussion leader. Five papers will be presented, dealing vwith a proposed Esperanto anthology of the literature of the United States. William Auld's paper on poetry will be presented in absentia. Other contributors scheduled are Dennis Q. Mclnerny (Bradley University, Illinois), John N. Hunter (Univer- sity of Colorado, Boulder), Miriam Hershenson, and Arthur Jasspe (Dramatists Guild). Seminar 194 will have the intriguing title "Interlinguistics versus the Esperanto Speech Community". Frank Esterhill of the Interlingua Institute will open the discussion with "Interlinguistics: A Historical Perspec- tive". Richard E. Wood (Adelphi University, New York) will speak on "A Questionnaire Survey of the Esperanto Speech Community"(see article elsewhere in this issue). Jacob Ornstein (University of Texas, El Paso) will deal with "Attitudinal Factors in Acceptance of an Interlanguage". Discussion leader will be Julius Balbin (Essex County College, New Jersey), multiple laureate of the Literary Competitions sponsored by the World Esperanto Association, perhaps best known for his trans- lation of Yevtushenko's "Babi Yar". fiuareschi in Esperanto Heroldo de Esperanto, the semimonthly newspaper-format independent Esperanto news review founded in 1920, has just sent out its Literary Supplement for 1974. The Supplement includes translations from Arab, Hebrew, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Russian and Ukrainian literature, besides original prose and poetry. Eleven authors contributed. Of particular interest is a fragment of G. Guareschi's novel Don Camillo (filmed with Fernandel in the title role), which for the first time appears in Esperanto translation. A double-size sample issue of Heroldo is available from ELNA Book Service for $1.00 postpaid, 75(t each for ten or more copies. The issue in question, dated 1 September 1974, deals with the World Esperanto Congress in Hamburg, and is recommended to teachers as a useful class text to introduce students to the international press. Subscriptions (10.00 annually) are also available from ELNA Book Service, P. O. Box 508, Burlingame, CA 94010. New Scout Representative Allan E. Fineberg of New Jersey has been appointed U. S. representative of the Scout Esperanto League by its President, John Berg- green of Norway. It was Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the international Scout movement, who first drew the attention of Scouts to the international language. In his book Scouting for Boys, Baden-Powell wrote, "If you want to use a secret language in your patrol, you should all learn 'Esperanto.1 It is not difficult, and is taught in a little book costing one penny. This language is being used in all countries, so that you would be able to get on with it abroad now." The Scout Esperanto League was founded in 1918 to promote Scout ideals through Esperanto, Esperanto among Scouts, and the sense of brotherhood common to both movements among young people of different nationalities. Today knowledge of Esperanto can be used to, earn the Scout Interpreter's Badge. ■ SEL is currently directing its efforts toward preparation for the 1979 international Scout Jamboree, slated for Iran. The League hopes to utilise the occasion to further the spread of Esperanto in Africa. A special Esperanto textbook for Scouts, Jamborea linqvo, is available from the ELNA Book Service (95$ plus 35$ postage). For information on the Scout Esperanto League, write to Allan E. Correspondence Course Reactivated The International Correspondence Course initiated by the Harvard Esperanto Club and for several years conducted under the auspices of ELNA's youth section JEN, is now a service of ELNA itself. A new Course Director has been selected, longtime ICC instructor Denis Le Cam. Le Cam, 22, has as his first task the recruitment of instructors for the course, which ELNA intends to vigorously promote in 1975. The complete course, including materials, is still available at the pre-inflation fee of $26.00. Full-time students under 22 may pay the special reduced fee of $21.00, which must be accompanied by a letter confirming current full-time enrollment from the school, Those interested in becoming students or- instructors should write to Mr. Denis Le Camv 116 Seabright Avenue, apt. 26, Santa Cruz, CA 95062.
