Junularo Esperantista Young Esperantists de Nord-Ameriko (JEN) of North America PUBLICITY SECTION News Digest 344 East 72nd St. New York, N. Y. 10021 No. 2 January, 1967 NEWS FROM JEN TRAINING SEMINAR HELD: JEN held its first leadership training seminar in New York City from 29-30 October, 1966. The main purpose of the seminar was to improve the quality of leadership and organization in JEN, and review the progress and potentiality of JEN and the organizations it works with. The seminar was held in the office of the Esperanto Information Center. Participants, who came from Chicago, Massachusetts, Pen- nsylvania and New York, welcomed guest speaker Dr. Ivo Lapenna, Reader in International and East European Law at the University of London, and President of the Universal Esper- anto Association, who spoke on the principles of effective public relations. Mr. Joel Silverman discussed Esperanto literature, and Mr. Mark Starr reported on the work of the Esperanto League for North America. During the meeting, JEN's program of future activi- ties was developed. A full report of the Seminar is now available from the Editor of News Digest. WEST COAST CONFERENCES: JEN Executive Board members Jim Craighead and Jonathan Pool met in California in December with Frank Lanzone, Director of the West Coast Esperanto Book Service, and Mr. and Mrs. William Schulze, probably the most active and successful promoters of the International Language in the United States. Problems of the Esperanto movement in general and JEN in particular were discussed. It was agreed that research into the characteristics of speakers and supporters of Esperanto, advocated by the October leadership training seminar in New York, is necessary for further pro- gress in informational activity and membership expansion. The use of professional public relations counselling was also discussed and, in principle, approved. Division of labor among the board members of JEN was another topic of discussion. INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENCE COURSE: The excellent International Corres- pondence Course, prepared by UEA, is now available through JEN. It is the only Esperanto course on the market that has the student using direct-method teaching: the student uses only Esperanto from the very beginning. The course is recommended especially for young learners, as well as all those who prefer not to tangle with the rules of grammar. Con- taining twenty-six lessons, the course has a normal completion time of one school semes- ter (six months). Each enrollee receives the attention of a personal instructor throughout the course, which he completes at his own pace. The cost: $26.00 including tuition and materials. Page 2 January. 1967 ELECTIONS: Julie Crandall, who already holds the position of News Digest Editor, has been elected by the Executive Board to the additional post of Secretary of JEN. As a result, both the internal and external communications of JEN will be chan- neled through the same address, and increased operating efficiency is expected. Jonathan Pool, graduate student in political science at the University of Chicago, and Executive Board member of JEN, has been elected JEN's representative in the committee of TEJO. The committee is the governing body of the organization. JEN CORRESPONDENCE SERVICE: JEN is pleased to announce the establishment of a further service for its members. The Correspondence service will provide names and addresses of Esperanto speakers both abroad and in the United States who wish to corres- pond in the International Language. The Service is directed by Arthur Morse, student at Greenfield (Mass.) Community College and Executive Board member of JEN. Please direct all inquiries to the Editor of News Digest. INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS MUNSTER, GERMANY: The 10th International Seminar of German Young Esper- antists was held from 27 December, 1966 to 3 January, 1967 under the patronage of the President of the University of Mtinster. "The Natural Scientist Looks at the World" was the subject of the meeting, whose speakers included French ophthalmologist Dr. Andre Albault, Finnish geodesist Dr. E. Kaariainen, Bulgarian geodesist Dr. V. Peevski, and and Dr. Ivo Lapenna, international lawyer. BRUSSELS, BELGIUM: A training seminar is being organized by the World Or- ganization of Young Esperantists (TEJO) to be held in Brussels from 3-10 January, 1967. The meeting will take place at the office of the Union of International Associations. Languages spoken will be French, Dutch, English and Esperanto, with consecutive inter- pretation. The seminar will be open to all international youth organizations and their national branches who believe the course would be beneficial to them. Some of the topics will be: Policy and planning; Structure and work of international organizations in the field of youth, education and culture. Speakers include Dr. G. P. Speeckaert, Secre- tary-General of the Union of International Associations and Mr. L. Verniers, Secretary- General of the Belgian Ministry of National Education. MEXICO CITY, MEXICO: The fifth annual Mexican Congress of Esperanto was held in Mexico City from 15-19 December, 1966. One of the highlights of the Congress was the International Esperanto Exhibit, designed to show the use of the International Language in the fields of literature, science and tourism. The Congress culminated in a "Public Evening" — the public was invited to attend the congress and join in its activities. NATHANYA, ISRAEL: Nathanya, site of the 1967 TEJO congress, is a seaside resort situated on the coast of central Israel, about twenty miles from Tel Aviv. Al- though it was founded in 1929 as an agricultural community, it is now a world center for the diamond industry. Cultural events, lectures, seminars, excursions, competitions, (both literary and public-speaking), the annual Congress Ball, official meetings, and abundant opportunities for contacts with young speakers of the International Language from twenty or more countries, are only some of the reasons why you should participate. Dates: 9-16 August. Approximate cost: $30 (precise list of fees for various age groups on request from News Digest Editor) including all program items, food and lodging for the week. Don't miss this congress! Page 3 January, 1967 TORUN, POLAND: The World League of Esperanto-Speaking Students will hold its second annual congress in Torun, Poland, from 18-22, August, 1967. Further details will be published as soon as they are available. If you're planning to be in Poland this summer, save these dates 1 OTHER NEWS UMEDA VISITS THE UNITED STATES: Yoshimi Umeda, who has been on an extended visit to Hawaii as representative of the Japanese religious movement Oomoto, visited California during December. Mr. Umeda is an Executive Committee Member of the World Organization of Young Esperantists (TEJO), and also serves as President of the Japanese Esperanto Youth Association. Oomoto-Festivalo, an excellent 30-minute documentary film about the Oomoto Festival which took place at Kameoko, Japan in 1965, and which had been shown at the Esperanto Congress in Budapest, was presented by Mr. Umeda at the annual banquet of the San Francisco Regional Organization on December 3, 1966. Mr. Umeda also lectured at several meetings during his stay in California. ESPERANTO FILM; Incubus, the U. S. entry in the San Francisco Film Festival, was presented on Wednesday, October 26, in San Francisco. Dialogue was in Esperanto, with subtitles in English. Unfortunately, the directors of the film failed to consult qualified speakers of Esperanto, and the result is a film with a language level so low that we cannot recommend it to our readers. CHILDREN AND ESPERANTO: San Mateo summer schools taught the International Language to more than 150 children in 1966. After five'weeks of instruction, the children began corresponding; contributed illustrated poems to an Esperanto children's magazine published in Switzerland (Grains in the Wind); presented playlets; performed science experiments which they learned from the book 'Amuzo per Scienco' and explained these in Esperanto as they performed the experiments. CANADA; In July, 1966, a group of enthusiastic young speakers of Esperanto in Canada officially organized as a national association. The organization, which is based on Eastern Canada, is making plans to send a representative to the 1967 TEJO Congress in Nathanya. JEN intends to work closely with its Canadian neighbors, and wishes them every success. LONDON, ENGLAND; The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) which already broadcasts to many parts of the world in a number of languages, has introduced yet another language on an experimental basis: Esperanto. Recognizing the current role of Esperanto in improving communications between East and West, the BBC's first Esper- anto programs have been beamed to Eastern Europe. FLANC: The Foreign Language Association of Northern California devoted part of its Fall Conference to a lecture on the subject "Esperanto as Preparation for Learning Languages". The talk took place on November 5 in San Rafael, California. Page 4 January, 1967 ISRAEL; While preparations are going ahead in both Tel Aviv and Nathanya for the Universal Congress and the TEJO Congress, arrangements are being made to organize charter flights and group trips by ship. Some begin in the United States, while others can be joined at various points in Europe, such as France and England. People who have time may prefer to take advantage of a group cruise to Israel, to learn Esperanto en route, improve their knowledge of the International Language, or simply benefit from lectures and discussion groups during the voyage. Send requirements or inquiries to the Editor of News Digest. UNESCO: The General Conference of Unesco, which ended on the 30th of Nov- ember, 1966, in Paris, decided to recommend that the General Director of Unesco appoint a commission of experts to study the need and possibilities of using an international language alongside the national languages in various spheres of human activity. The question was officially raised by Denmark, Iceland, Finland and Sweden. SAN MATEO, CALIFORNIA; The University of California, Extension Division, is offering a course on teaching methods, techniques and materials used in instructing the International Language. Taught by Mr. Philop Vandor, Principal of Highlands School in San Mateo, the course is further evidence of the widespread and rapidly growing demand for teachers of Esperanto in the California schools. WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS; Mr. Allan C. Boschen, Computer Engineer with General Electric Company in Pittsfield, Mass., is one of the most active speakers of the Inter- national Language in Western Massachusetts. His activities include lectures and courses, and a recent interview by the General Electric Morning Show (WBEC). His subject for this program was the International Language Esperanto.
