Part II of a Survey of Encyclopedias
Published in the English Language
The American Esperanto Magazine of May-June 1957 contained "a brief
but comprehensive survey of the current editions of American and British
encyclopedias," covering a total of 27 reference works. The following
supplemental information should be read in conjunction with the earlier
article and brings coverage up to a total of 38 encyclopedias and similar
publications. It deals with books which had not yet appeared in May 1957
as well as with some encyclopedias overlooked or otherwise not men-
tioned in the original survey.
Scholarly and Specialized Encyclopedias
The Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences, published in New York in
1933 and reprinted in 1935, contains in Volume 9, on pages 155-169, an
article on Language by the late Professor Edward Sapir. Since he was
one of the founding fathers of modern linguistics, his views on Esperanto,
as expressed in this encyclopedia, are of particular interest. While mem-
bers of the Esperanto movement may not agree with every detail in Sapir's
article, they might well make effective use of his statements in discus-
sions with linguists and social scientists. Sapir writes (pp. 168-169):
"The logical necessity of an international language in modern times is in
strange contrast to the indifference and even opposition with which most
people consider its possibility. The attempts so far made to solve this
problem, of which Esperanto has probably had the greatest measure of
success, have not affected more than a very small proportion of the people
whose international interests and needs might have led to a desire for a
simple and uniform means of international expression, at least for certain
purposes. It is in the less important countries of Europe, such as Czecho-
slovakia, that Esperanto has been moderately successful, and for obvious
reasons. The opposition to an international language has little logic or
psychology in its favor. The supposed artificiality of such a language as
Esperanto or any of the equivalent languages that have been proposed has
been absurdly exaggerated, for in sober truth there is practically nothing
in these languages that is not taken from the common stock of words and
forms that have gradually developed in Europe. Such an international lan-
guage could of course have only the status of a secondary form of speech
for distinctly limited purposes. Thus considered, the learning of a con-
structed international language offers no further psychological problem
than the learning of any other language which is acquired after childhood
through the medium of books and with the conscious application of gram-
matical rules. The lack of interest in the international language problem,
in spite of the manifest need for one, is an excellent example of how little
logic or intellectual necessity have to do with the acquirement of lan-

guage habits .. . The future alone will tell whether the logical advantages
and theoretical necessity of an international language can overcome the
the largely symbolic opposition which it has to meet."
The New Lamed History for Ready Reference, Reading, and Research,
published in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1923, has an article on Inter-
national Language, dealing almost exclusively with Esperanto, in Volume
5 on pp. 4423-4426. In accordance with the format of the set, the article
consists of lengthy extracts from books and articles by Dr. W.J. Clark,
Albert L. Guerard, E. D. Osborn, and Major-General George Cox, as well
as from the Outline of Esperanto Literature, published by the Esperanto
Association of North America, and from an article printed in the New York
Times. While this material, published long ago, cannot be up-to-date, the
article contains so many important facts and is so detailed and reliable
that the Lamed, which is available in most public and university libraries,
should not be overlooked by those doing research on Esperanto. By the
sheer quantity of its material this article probably exceeds anything pub-
lished in any other encyclopedia.
The Australian Encyclopaedia, published in 1958 in Sydney, Mel-
bourne, Wellington, and London, contains an excellent article on Esper-
anto in Volume 3, on pp. 402-403- General information on the language is
concise and accurate. In accordance with the special purpose of this en-
cyclopedia, the article deals mostly with Esperanto in Australia.
The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, published in New York in 1943,
features an article on L. L. Zamenhof, the originator of Esperanto, in Vol-
ume 10, on page 627. It contains a great deal of useful information on the
language, but also some serious errors. It states, for instance, that "in
1910 Zamenhof visited the United States, remaining for one year, and de-
livered lectures in various cities of the country." In fact Dr. Zamenhof
came to this country in 1910 to attend the Universal Esperanto Congress
in Washington and returned to Europe shortly thereafter. The article also
claims that "postage stamps printed in Esperanto were published in Soviet
Russia, Canada, the United States, Malta, and other countries." In reality
the list runs as follows: Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, the
Soviet Union, Trieste, and Yugoslavia.
The Encyclopedia of American Organizations, published in Detroit in
1956, includes a description of the Esperanto Association of North Amer-
ica on page 145-  It is concise and accurate.
The Year Book of International Organizations 1958-1959, published in
Brussels by the Union of International Associations in official collabora-
tion with the United Nations, contains information on about ten interna-
tional Esperanto organizations.
The New International Year Book, published by the Funk and Wagnalls
Company in New York, contained in its I960 edition the twelfth in the
series of annual reports on Esperanto contributed by Dr. William Solz-
bacher, past President of the Esperanto Association of North America.
Esperanto progress during the twelve-month review period was described
under such subtitles as Schools, Conferences, Books and Publications,
Radio, Television and Films. We understand that the 1961 edition, now in
production, contains another of these comprehensive reports.

Popular   Encyclopedias
The Grolier Encyclopedia, formerly known as Doubleday's Encyclo-
pedia, contains in its 1958 edition, published in New York and Toronto,
a fairly comprehensive article (almost one page) on Esperanto under the
signature of Dr. William Solzbacher. It appears on page 101 in Volume 8.
A bibliography refers to Esperanto: The World Interlanguage, by G. A. Con-
nor and others, and recommends textbooks by Dr. Ivy Kellerman Reed and
Montagu C. Butler as well as E. D. Durrant's The Language Problem and
Its Solution and the Edinburgh Esperanto Dictionary. Several other arti-
cles in the Grolier Encyclopedia, also contributed by Dr. Solzbacher, con-
tain references to Esperanto.
A Modern University Encyclopedia, published in London in 1957, has
a very short item (8 lines) on Esperanto. It is accurate as far as it goes,
except for a reference to the Esperanto Academy "in Paris." Academy
headquarters have been in The Hague for many years.
The Volume Library, published in New York in 1958, contains an ar-
ticle on Artificial Auxiliary Languages, apparently reprinted without any
change from earlier editions. The article is completely obsolete and in
part inaccurate. Its statement that Esperanto has been found "too compli-
cated" for its stated purpose is an accusation which we have never heard
from anyone even moderately informed on the subject.
The Picture Dictionary, "the world's largest collection of pictures
alphabetically arranged," published in Brooklyn in 1952, contains a brief
item on Esperanto in Volume One. It is accurate and is illustrated by a
quotation from the Esperanto Bible (John III 16).
Juvenile Encyclopedias
The Richards Topical Encyclopedia, last published in New York in
1953, contains on pp. 7-8 of Volume 10 an article on "the invention of
language" mentioning Esperanto very briefly.
The Book of Knowledge, of which we have now examined the 1958 edi-
tion, continues to contain an article with the subtitle Esperanto, the Inter-
national Language of Doctor Hopeful, in Volume 10, on pp. 6394-6396, but
seems to have somewhat shortened its factual treatment of the subject.
On the other hand, it has added editorial comments which might be de-
scribed as pessimistic for the immediate future and optimistic for the dis-
tant future: "The future of Esperanto seemed bright (after World War I).
The language lost ground, however, in the troubled days that preceded
World War II, and the outbreak of the war was a terrible blow to it. You
see, a would-be universal language like Esperanto can flourish only when
nations are at peace and want to meet on terms of friendship. Esperanto
survived the war, and it still has devoted followers, but they are not so
hopeful any more. . . The chances that a universal language will be adop-
ted by all the nations of the world seem very slight at present. If, how-
ever, they decide some day to cooperate with one another as good friends
and neighbors, it is possible that they may agree on a truly universal lan-
guage—one that each person would learn in addition to his national tongue."
Esperanto in Encyclopedias, Part I, printed in the May-June 1957 "AE",
dealt with such widely known encyclopedias as "Britannica", "Americana",

ESPERANTO IN ACTION
AROUND THE WORLD
The Mayor of Oslo, Brynjulf Bull, spoke Esperanto at a meeting cele-
brating the fiftieth anniversary of the Norwegian Esperanto League, on
January 27, 1961. Another speaker in Esperanto was the Finnish Ambas-
sador to Norway, Madame Tyyne Leivo-Larsson, a former Minister of So-
cial Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of Finland. The Norwegian Minis-
ter of Education, Helge Sivertsen, spoke in Norwegian. The Minister of
Consumer, Home, and Family Affairs, Aase Bjerkholt, also was present.
In the Spanish Club of the Department of Health, Education, and Wel-
fare in Washington, the Very Reverend Dr. J. B. Se-Tsien Kao, O. F. M.,
a prominent Chinese clergyman who lived in Brazil for the past six years
and is now on his way to Taiwan, where he will be a Professor at Fu Jen
University in Taipei, delivered a lecture on the world language problem
and Esperanto on March 15, 1961. Father Kao, who is one of the authors
of the book, "Esperanto: The World Interlanguage," as well as the author
of a Classified Esperanto-Spanish Dictionary, published in Buenos Aires,
spoke in Spanish, of course. He is fluent in seven languages and is the
author of books and articles in five.
An Esperanto Club for Actors and Actresses, the Melpomene Club, re-
cently was founded at the State Theatre of Lodz, Poland.
One of the pioneers of Esperanto, Teodor Julin, recently celebrated
his eightieth birthday in Sweden. He is a former Postmaster of Stockholm
and a former Member of the Swedish Parliament. He expressed pleasure
over the Esperanto broadcasts of the Voice of America.
The Danish Ministry of Education has made a subsidy of 5,000 kroner
available for an Anthology of Danish Literature in Esperanto.
Information about the German Federal Republic, from the political,
economic, scientific, and cultural point of view, is the subject of a new
Esperanto magazine, Okcidentgermana Revuo ("West German Review").
Articles about Chancellor Adenauer, the West German Parliament, cancer
research, the International Trade Fair of Hanover, and early German liter-
ature are among those featured in the first issue.
In Finland Esperanto is being taught at the people's colleges (adult
education centers) of Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Mikkeli, Rauma, Kuopio,
Lahti, Vaakaky, Kokomaki, Lauritsala, and Lappeenranta.
"The Sermon of the Nations," an annual event in Rome at which chil-
dren from many countries make short speeches, recite poetry, and sing
songs in their own tongues, recently again numbered Esperanto among
the 22 languages represented. Girls from the Esperanto class of the Col
di Lana School in Rome participated. They also sang in Esperanto for the
radio on this occasion.

A feature on THE NEW FRONTIER in the Voice of America Es-
peranto broadcast of March 24, 1961, included a tape recording in
the voice of the poet Robert Frost, reading his poem, "The Gift Out-
right," at President Kennedy's Inauguration. This was followed by
an Esperanto translation of the poem.
The land was ours before we were the land's.
She was our land more than a hundred years
Before we were her people. She was ours
In Massachusetts,  in Virginia,
But we were England's,   still colonials,
Possessing what we still were unpossessed by,

Esperanto-Klubo t/e Nov-Jorko anoncas kunvenojn en la granda salono
de la Unuigitaj Nacioj sur la 5-a etaĝo de la sekretariejo. La klubo kun-
venas vendrede sub la gvidadode Prezidanto D-ro Julius Balbin kaj Sekre-
tario-Protokolisto Joel Silverman. Diversaj eminentuloj prelegas antaŭ la
grupo. Inter la bonaj faroj de la klubo estas la kolektado kaj donacado de

ado de Donald W. Hoffman finis la unuan stadion kun dek studentoj. Dum
la lasta kunveno, la 6-an de Aprilo, parolis antafl la grupo S-ro Chaanshik
Choi el Koreo. Oni planasalian kursonen laaŭtuno. La bulteno de la kom-
panio "Employee News" presis belajn novaĵojn pri la kurso.
Pastro D-ro J. B. Se-Tsien Kao, 0. P.M., nia malnova cina samideano
kaj kunaŭtoro de "Esperanto: The World Interlanguage," vizitis la Centran
Oficejon. Li raportis novajojn pri la Esperanta movado en Brazilo, kie li
deĵoris dum la pasintaj kelkaj jaroj; kaj li informis nin, ke li nun restos

Morto de Georgiana (Gina) Vathis pro subita koratako okazis en Genoa,
Italujo. "Gina" estis la edzino de nia kara samideano kaj amiko, William
P.Vathis, kiu deĵoras en la usona konsulejo en Italujo. Plej malĝoja estis
la informo por ni, kiuj tiel intime konis la familion. Si lasis junan filon,
Petro, kiu estas tro juna por kompreni la perdon de patrino. La patro, Wil-
liam (Vilcjo) Vathis, iam laboris en la Centra Oficejo de EANA, antaŭ ol
li komencis servi en konsulejoj. Dum deĵoro en Hong Kong li enamiĝis al
la bela ĉina fraŭlino Ĝina Lui, al kiu li edziĝis. Paeon al Ĝina, kaj kor-
plenajn kondolencojn al Vilĉjo kaj eta Petro.

Luis Hernandez Lahuerta, Valencia, Hispanujo, mortis la 12-an de ja-
nuaro post mallonga malsaniĝo. Niaj hispanaj amikoj informis nin pri tio,
kaj longa artikolo en la "Boletin" de la hispana Esperanta movado priskri-
bis la gravan aktivecon de tiu fama kaj eminenta Esperanto-gvidanto.
Janesville Esperanto Humanist Ass'n, estas fondita de grupo da stu-
dentoj en kolegio en Janesville, Wis., por propagandi Esperanton kaj Raci-
ismon. La estraro estas: Michael Frank, Prezidanto; Gerald Hoague, Vic-
Prez.; kaj Richard Sexton, Ekzekutiva Sekretario. La celo, laŭ la moto
"fondita por la plibonigo de la homo, per la homo" estas por disvastigi

"Aggressors" kaj Esperanto: Ni ricevis eltrancafon el la "Oregonian,"
Portland, Ore., kun artikolo titolita " 'Aggressors' Show U.S. Soldiers How
to Survive in Battle." Kun bildoj kaj priskriboj ĝi montras la parton de la
armeo, kiu servas kiel la 'malamiko'en militekzercoj. "Aggressors" (milit-
istaro de agresado) uzas Esperanton kiel sian oficialan 'lingvon', kaj
presas lernolibrojn kaj instrukciojn pri la uzo de Esperanto en siaj ek-
zercoj. Kompreneble la kialo de la Esperanta uzado estas por ne kolerigi
aliajn naciojn per uzado de iliaj lingvoj, kvankam "Aggressors" ja utiligas
kiel la oficialan saluton la fermigitan pugnon!

"Granda vort' ne estas klabo,
Fanfarona spiro ja ne
Estas taŭga arkokordo,
