P 1 ,vil WE BEGAN THE NEW YEAR with issuance of the American Esperanto Magazine and other regular ser- vices of the Association. The first issue of AE contains an extremely important article in Esperanto, which should be studied carefully by every Esperantist everywhere. The article purports to show a dan- gerous trend in our Esperanto movement, and indicates the probable basic motivation for schism and divi- sion among Esperanto organizations both here and abroad. Due to the gravity and length of the special article, our regular news items were crowded out of AE. We give some brief items in this Bulletin. EANA CONGRESS & ELECTION 1959: The Congress was held at the McBurney YMCA in New York, November 27-29, and apart from the usual "get-together" for members, annual reports, gay banquet, excur- sions, etc, the major topic for discussion was the activity of "red" elements against our Association and the possibility of "unity" in our movement under such circumstances. These matters will be discussed in future issues of AE or bulletin. The congress banquet was a highlight of the annual affair, with Ray Kelly as the MC. Among honored guests, Dr. Stephen Zamenhof, nephew of the author of Esperanto, was listened to with intense interest. The results of the annual ejection gave overwhelming approval for: President, Prof. John M. Brewer; Vice President, Eulalia Marks, General Secretary, George Alan Connor. "VOĈO DE AMERIKO EN ESPERANTO" -Esperanto journals throughout the world are printing the good news that The Voice of America, the world-wide radio service of the United States government has decided to broadcast an experimental series of programs in Esperanto. The 30-minute broadcasts will be- gin on the 11th of March and will continue for six weeks. They will be directed by Dr. William Solzbacher, whom all members know well because of his excellent articles in AE and as former President of EANA. These broadcasts are for foreign lands, outside North America of course. Eventual regular use of Esper- anto by The Voice of America will depend upon the results of the experimental series. ESPERANTO ON THE HIGH SEAS: Among our seafaring members, Joseph H. Casto, now vacationing in Florida, just received his "Atesto pri Kapableeo" from EANA. He is radio officer on a ship which visits the Orient for the most part, and wherever he goes Esperanto books go with him. ESPERANTO IN ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE: For several years now, Flizabethtown College in Pen- nsylvania has maintained an Esperanto course with full college credit given. Instruction is by Dr. F. C. Neumann. EANA is proud of its part in aiding the establishment of this course, in providing the textbooks "Esperanto: The World Interlanguage", and in providing EANA Certificates to successful students. Three more students have just gained their certificates: Susan Hertzog, Use Lunger, and Patricia Walborn. ESPERANTO IN CULVER MILITARY ACADEMY: It seems just "yesterday" that Cadet Charles Van Tuyl wrote us about Esperanto. In a relatively short time he learned the interlanguage and now has formed a group for its study at this famous young men's Academy in Indiana. Orders for more textbooks from time to time indicate progress. Cadet Van Tuyl has developed remarkable leadership for this activity. IN GONDAR, ETHIOPIA, Esperanto courses have continued for the medical associates of Dr. Lee*Min Han, who heads the Public Health College of the Ministry of Public Health of the Ethiopian government. Dr. Han directs the courses, using the textbook "Esperanto: The A'orld Interlanguage". For years, Dr. Han has been a Member of the Sustaining Board of EANA. Reports and pictures of his group in a future AE. SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS, Oldenburg, Indiana, has a devoted Esperanto teacher in Sister Francis Marie, who has been teaching Esperanto to children in the school during these several years since 1952. GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN, has organized a new Esperanto study group under the guidance of Mrs. E. T. Hill. The textbook will be "Esperanto: The World Interlanguage" along with the "Connor Course". ESPERANTO CLASSES IN ONTARIO: Continuing reports in the local press, clippings from newspapers in and around Forest, Ontario, atest to the activities of Mr.& Mrs. John Hoyle in Esperanto classes there. GREENFIELD, MASS., is really "popping" with Esperanto, because of the tireless activities of David Garson, with classes, Esperanto exhibits in public libraries and elsewhere, and other practical promotional activities. In these activities Warren H. Gould is giving his expert direction and assistance. DRURY COLLEGE, SPRINGFIELD, MO., is another college using "Esperanto: The World Interlanguage" as its textbook. Students in the foreign language department learn Esperanto under Dr. Margaret Kidder. DR. LYDIA ALLEN DeVILBISS, outstanding Esperantist leader in the Miami, Fla., area, is constantly working for Esperanto. Among her plans is the giving of Esperanto books to needy lands, such as Korea, Formosa, in the Orient, and similar lands in Europe. Dr. DeVilbiss received the Esperanto literature from F. Karl Immeke who died recently. Dr. DeVilbiss provides not only the books byt funds to pay for shipment. This is indeed a wonderful kindness to deserving and needy Esperanto groups in far places. ALLAN HUTCHEON, CLAREMONT, N.H.,is an active Esperanto promotion expert. For months now he has lectured on Esperanto to Rotary Clubs, church groups, parent-teachers, etc, The local press prints fa- vorable articles about these meetings. Mr. Hutcheon has two more lectures scheduled for March. OUR MEMBERS IN ACTION: A partial list of members who constantly work for Esperanto and EANA in their areas — Al. THE LEFTIST LEADERS OF ELNA ARE CARELESS WITH THE TRUTH False and misleading "information" about efforts for unity in the American Esperanto movement has re- cently been published in "HEROLDO" at the request of Armin Doneis, President of ELNA. The gist of the "information", viz: "Toe Unity Committee of ELNA received word from EANA that the 'estraro' of EANA^ does not accept the proposal for re-union, which ELNA presented in good faith during its Congress." This deliberate misinformation along with typical pious expressions which we expect from Doneis, such as "good faith", "regrets during Zamenhof Year", "united forces", and "hope for final success", is contrived to win friends and influence people for Doneis and ELNA of course. But how much sincerity and truth is in it? Firstly, no mention is made of the original "Unity Committee" consisting of representatives in equal num- bers from both EANA and ELNA, and which functioned up to the time of the ELNA Congress. At that Con- gress, ELNA rejected the proposal for unity made by its own representatives on the aforesaid Committee (see the essentials of said proposal published in the April-May 1959 Bulletin of AE), and then set up a NEW unilateral committee "of ELNA" under Ferd Carlson's control. The 'estraro' and Central Office of EANA have had absolutely no dealings with the so-called "Unity Committee of ELNA"- neither before, during nor after the ELNA Congress. Therefore it is utter falsification when one publishes that "The Unity Committee of ELNA received word from EANA that the 'estraro'of EANA does not accept the proposal for re-union, whic ELNA presented in good faith, etc." Our dealings have been entirely with the original bilateral Unity Com- mittee, and EANA has neither received any such proposal as mentioned by Doneis, nor communicated in any way with the unilateral "Committee" set up at the ELNA Congress. Secondly, anyone who knows Doneis, or the other V.I.P'.s of ELNA for that matter, knows that these gentry would under no circumstances voluntarily give up their offices and titles, even for unity! Therefore what remains to be said about Doneis' pious expressions in the light of his tenacity to the throne of ELNA! All this must be credited to the influence of Dale Carnegie in his life, plus a delight in fanciful poetic phrases. NO, there will be no unity from the leaders of ELNA, who originally brought about the schism.
