ESPERANTO ASSOCIATION OF NORTH AMERICA,114 W.16 St.NYJ it n M i i i ■. i.............. ■■ ii ■"■"'■.....■.■■in mi—>—...■■... .............— ■ "■ ■'■.........May?1*-*"""""^ NEW YEAR'S BULLETIN 1958 Bear Fellov-Esperantists: The year 1958 will mark 50 years since our name^Esperanto Association of North America" was adopted by the Board and membership. The Association, however, was established three years previously, in 1905, as the "American Esperanto Association". Throughout all those years EANA has solidly maintained its exist- ence as the representative Esperanto organiza- tion in America, through lean years and fat years. Now, at the beginning of the year 1958, we stand on the threshold of new developments and new possibilities; and we are happy to re- port that the membership count on Dec. 31 was very close to the highest in EANA's history. We are deeply appreciative of the fact that the vast majority of our members have re- mained loyal and steadfast over the years of endeavors for Esperanto in America. They have responded generously to the calls for support of the Central Office and active promotion. The Central Office: Since the Fall season began, the Central Office has been busy with many routine activities — answering inquiries; sending out special circulars for new members; servicing the various needs of members; edit- ing, composing, and sending out the American Esperanto Magazine. Because of the steady sup- port of the Esperantists throughout our land, we have been able to continue publishing our high-quality 32-page magazine, despite all the extra effort and expense involved. New people Interested In Esperanto have continued to join EANA in goodly numbers, among them a fair pro- portion of college students. The Esperanto As- sociation of New Jersey continues successful organization of adult education classes, and these students all become members of EANA. An outstanding response in new memberships from our French-Canadian neighbors resulted from articles in French-Canadian journals by Dr.W. Solzbacher. All these new members are cordial- ly welcomed and assisted by EANA. Nominating Committee for 1958; The Treas- urer and one Associate Director of EANA are to be elected this year. Present incumbents are Doris T* Connor, Treas., and Adeline Vigelis, Associate Director. Suggestions for any and all candidates may be sent to the Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Miss Mary Marrett, 40-45 Gleane Street, Elmhurst, N. Y. 1958 Annual Congress: Plans are now under way to have the 1938 Annual Congress of EANA in New York City on the 4th, 5th, and 6th of July. Prospects are for a real working Con- gress, with a proposal for Esperanto unity, and with ample apportunity for information and discussion on various aspects of the Esperanto movement in North America and the world. You will be reading about all this in AE. The Book Service: EANA has continued to re- duce all prices to lowest levels possible, and at the same time gives a 10$ discount to EANA members in "Book Dividend Coupons". There has been a good response to this new policy, and more Esperantists are turning to the purchase of books from the tremendous stocks of EANA. However, entirely too many hooks remain on hand, taking up needed office space for other expanding services. Plans are in the making for giving free book premiums to ALL who join as regular members in 1958. If you are not now a member of EANA, you should plan to join SOON so as to be in line for these privileges. The Hew Phrase Book: ¥e momentarily expect delivery of the new phrase book in Esperanto, which has been briefly mentioned in last year's bulletin and in the AE. It contains about 1000 entries, giving Esperanto equivalents for a multitude of common words and expressions used in travel and everyday life — some of which have never before been translated into Esper- anto. In addition to the free book premiums, mentioned in previous paragraph, all members of EANA are scheduled to receive this import- ant new Item, as a privilege for being on the rolls of the Association during 1953. Financial Needs for the Year: The begin- ning of a new year always brings up the ques- tion of finances for the months ahead. Member- ships in all categories* imeluding our Regular Members at §5> Student Members at $3, Patron Members at $10, and Members of the Sustaining Board who pay from $3 to $5 per month, are all vital to the support of the Association. In addition, extra contributions (large or small) to the Sustaining Fund provide the life-blood for the continuous functioning of the Associ- ation. These contributions, plus the sums re- ceived from the various categories of member- ship, are also the gauge, as it were, which helps to determine the funds that will be re- ceived from friends outside the Association. If we, as an Association, can demonstrate real sacrificing self-help on the part of all our members, then to a greater extent are we wor- thy of continued aid from outside sources. Extra contributions go a long way — and really count double — In the support of your Association, and In the sustained work for the promotion of Esperanto in America, where it is In some respects most needed. In our January- February number of AE, an appeal was made for new Members of the Sustaining Board. We are very fortunate in having a few members on the Board who contribute $10 a month, and others who contribute $5 a month; however, most of our Sustaining Board members contribute the regular $3 a month. New 'blood' is needed on the Board to take the place of those who sacrifice for a year or more, but are unable to do more than that» Perhaps YOU can step into the breach for a year or two on the Board, and thus tremendous- ly aid your Association. We are proud, too, of our Patron Members. The base of our operations are, of course, regular memberships. Won't YOU add your help in 1958 by doing the following: 1. Join the Sustaining Board for 1958 by con- tributing a certain amount each month ($3 to $10, or whatever you can afford). Your membership in EiNA is included in Sustain- ing Board Membership. 2. Send a contribution, large or small,to the Sustaining Fund for 1953. 3. Renew your membership, if it is now due,in as high a category as possible: Patron Mem- ber $10; Regular Member $5; H.S. & College Student, Armed Forces $3» Sustaining Board membership is explained in paragraph #1. (The date when your renewal is due is stamp- ed below. Please renew soon.) There's a special reply card enclosed for your contribution and renewal. Remember that your contribution can count double in the months ahead. So, won^t you please do your part to help EaNA continue its work for the sustained promotion of Esperanto in America? /——u Cordially yours, \/ r-\y\ in fir\iniiM C^J C"£-i-, r- y°u fin(3 it useful and want ^M^Y.
