ESPERANTO ASSOCIATION OF NORTH AMERICA,11* W.16 St.NY cA NEW YEAR'S BULLETIN M Dear Co-Workers for Esperanto: The Golden Jubilee Year of EANA is almost over, but the 50th Anniversary year of the founding of the American Esperanto Magazine "America Esperantisto"is just beginning. As we look over events and developments for the past year we are deeply conscious of the fact that the membership of EANA responded with generosity and faith to last year's call for support during the Jubilee Year, As a result the Central Office has been able to function cantinously straight through the year. It has also been possible to enlarge and expand the size of the American Esperanto Magazine to 52 pages instead of the previous 20, The January-February 1956 issue of AE in the new size has just been sent out. We hope you like it, and we will appreciate any com- ments or suggestions you may have so as to help make it better serve the needs of all mem- bers. It is planned to continue to publish a 52 page AE, and thus make it possible to add new sections and departments, also more liter- ary and cultural material to the contents, and even to increase the size if feasible. Your continued support and assistance in all this is most Important, both in keeping up our pres- ent standards and in enriching and bettering the contents. In the New Year's Bulletin, last year we suggested that pioneers and long time members send in brief autobiographies of themselves. Quite a few responses were received and these accounts were printed in the AE Magazine under the heading "Nlaj Pioniroj". We know that there are many more who are entitled to be considered pioneers and veterans of Esperanto and EANA, and we would appreciate receiving details of your Esperanto activities from you. Along with this New Year's Bulletin we are sending a Golden Jubilee Honor Roll, listing members of EANA during 1955. In order to indi- cate the pioneers and veterans, and also those persons who, to our knowledge, have been mem- bers of EANA for the past ten years or more,we have starred these names in the list. This Hon- or Roll, then, is truly an Expression of Faith in the activities and traditions of EANA through the years. The Bulletin that was sent out by the Com- mittee on Unity has evoked a good response.lt has become increasingly evident, that confu- • sion and difficulty can only be overcame by giving complete support to the one solid Amer- ican organization EANA. A number of former mem- bers have rej"oined the Association and have ex- pressed the wish to work solely within the framework of the loyal and traditional EANA. Now is the time for anyone, who may have left the Association, to rejoin and receive a hearty welcome among our members. Also, if those who are loyal members of EANA, but who for one reason or another have participated with a com- peting organization, would give their sole sup- port to EANA, the much desired unity would au- tomatically become a reality. We trust that each and every Esperantist will give careful consideration to the proposal of the Unity Com- mittee — that we lend our support to the ONE representative organization EANA. The past year has shown a steady level of interest in Esperanto as evidenced by the num- ber of inquiries on the interlanguage received at the Central Office, and by the various ac- tivities engaged in by members. More than 100 new people have Joined EANA as Members since June 1955. Articles and "Letters to the Editor", written by members have appeared in many news- papers and journals throughout the US and Can- ada. Members seem to be taking an intense in- terest in improving their ability to use Esper- anto in speaking and writing. New members start using Esperanto efficiently in an amazingly short time. Both old and new members indicate a developed interest in the literature of Es- peranto as evidenced by their sustained book purchases. And now we come to the financial picture. The publication of a 52-page magazine will in- volve a fairly considerable increase in expense for that item, mainly because of the increased hours that will be needed to varitype the mate- rial --all of which is done in the Central Of- fice. In its present format AS is one of the most impressive Esperanto magazines in the world, and it is important for the prestige and progress of Esperanto in America that it be dignified and a credit to our Esperanto movement and to our country, It is our hope, that a better magazine will lead to continued increase in the number of active members in EANA. But the fact remains that SANA will have to secure approximately $980 more in additional funds to make this endeavor successful. Your contributions to the Sustaining Board and to the Sustaining Fund of EANA in the next few months will be all Important to this effort. The Sustaining Board and the Sustaining Fund were specially set up to receive contri- butions large and small from members and from friends of EANA. During 1955, 23 persons join- ed the Sustaining Board and contributed mon- thly sums ranging from $3 to $10 to sustain the work of the Association. (Each member of the Sustaining Board receives a special certi- ficate of thanks and appreciation for his help to the Association.) And contributions large and small to the. Sustaining Fund from many members of EANA helped to add that extra amount which enables the Association to secure outside funds and to continue its work. We call upon all members to help swell the contributions to the Sustaining Board and Fund during the com- ing year. An increased number of members of EANA raised their membership payments during 1955 from the minimum membership at $5 to Patron Membership at $10 a year. For this added sup- port the Association is truly grateful. Here, then, are the ways YOU can help assure a quality AE Magazine and continued success for Esperanto in America. 1. Join the Sustaining Board for 1956 by con- tributing a certain amount each month ($5 to $10, or whatever you can afford). Your membership in EANA is included in Sustain- ing Board Membership, 2« Send a contribution, large or small, to the Sustaining Fund for 1956. 5. Renew your membership, if it is now due, in as high a category as possible: Patron Mem- ber $10; Regular Member $5; H.S. & College Student, Armed Forces $3* Sustaining Board Membership is explained in paragraph #1. YOU made the ntMCw/Ai ff/iJubilfee Year successful. Now -- KpNhVVALHfwill you continue to help build QUE-, /f/for even bigger gains and accomp- s(\S^&r*(/ lishments in the year ahead? It will be noted with gratitude. DORIS T.CONNOR, Treasurer of EANA E.S.SL0AN, Public Relations Comm. Extra! Extra!
