ESPERANTO  WINS   RECOGNITION  AT
MONTEVIDEO UNESCO CONFERENCE
/I T its Eighth Session held at Montevideo, Uruguay, the General C.on-
_^»   ferenceof UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization) adopted the following resolution, which had been
proposed by Mexico and seconded by Switzerland:
"WHEREAS the General Conference has discussed the Report of the
Director-General on the International Petition in favor of Esperanto,
BE IT RESOLVED THAT the General Conference
(1)  notes the results obtained by Esperanto in the field of interna-
tional intellectual exchanges and in efforts aimed at bringing the peo-
ples of the world closer together;
(2)    recognizes that these results are in accordance with the aims
and ideals of UNESCO;
(3)  instructs the Director-General to follow current developments in
the use of Esperanto in science, education, and culture, and, for this
purpose, to cooperate with the Universal Esperanto Association in mat-
ters concerning both organizations;
(4)  takes cognizance of the fact that several Member States have an-
nounced their willingness to introduce or expand the teaching of Esper-
anto in their schools or institutions of higher learning, and requests
those Member States to keep the Director-General informed about results
obtained in this field."
This resolution was adopted at the last Plenary Meeting of the Confer-
ence, on December 10, 1954, by a vote of 30 to 5, with 17 abstentions.
A few days earlier, in the Program Committee, the General Confer-
ence adopted the report of the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Luther H.
Evans, about the Esperanto Petition. It also voted to grant the Univer-
sal Esperanto Association "consultative status." This gives the world
organization of the Esperanto movement, with which the Esperanto As-
sociation of North America is affiliated, the right to be consulted and
to send delegates to UNESCO conferences.
The good news of the success achieved at Montevideo is being re-
ceived throughout the Esperanto movement with a great deal of satisfac-
tion and enthusiasm. It is an important stepping stone on the way to-
wards a solution of the world language problem by the use of Esperanto
as an easy-to-learn, neutral, and practical world interlanguage. It is a
most valuable act of encouragement and recognition for those who have
been using Esperanto in a variety of fields and have demonstrated how
Esperanto can solve many of the world's language problems. There is
special cause for rejoicing because the success was obtained in spite
of a number of unfavorable circumstances.
Esperanto's success at Montevideo is due in the first place to the
intrinsic validity of the claims of Esperanto and to the impressive sup-

port which the Esperanto Petition had secured, in the form of 895,432 in-
dividual signatures and of endorsement by organizations with a combined
membership of 15,454,780. It is due, furthermore, to the intelligent and
persistent efforts of the two official delegates of the Esperanto move-
ment to the Montevideo Conference: Professor Ivo Lapenna, a member of
the Executive Board of the Universal Esperanto Association, and Pro-
fessor Manuel Fernandez Mene'ndez, President of the Esperanto Society
of Uruguay. There are also many others who made the Montevideo suc-
cess possible, especially Mr. E. D. Durrant, of London, England, who
served for many years as UEA's public relations officer for UNESCO af-
fairs and was responsible for much of the basic preparatory work.
American Supporters
In the United States, one might mention the past President of the Es-
peranto Association of North America, Dr. William Solzbacher, who head-
ed the delegation which presented the Esperanto Petition to the United
Nations in August 1950, and Mr. Mark Starr, Educational Director of the
International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union and Vice Chairman of the
U.S. Advisory Committee on Educational Exchange, who has been active
in UNESCO work from the beginning and has frequently emphasized the
importance of Esperanto for the realization of UNESCO's aims. Promi-
nent Americans who supported the Esperanto petition to the United Na-
tions and took an active part in its promotion included: Professor Har-
old S. Sloan, of New York University, former Executive Director of the
Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Chairman of the Public Relations Committee
of the Esperanto Association of North America; Mr. George W. Bailey,
Executive Secretary of the Institute of Radio Engineers, President of the
American Radio Relay League and of the International Amateur Radio
Union; Mr. G. Alan Connor, General Secretary of the Esperanto Associ-
ation of North America; the Reverend John LaFarge, former Editor-in-
Chief of "America"; the Honorable Fred R. Zimmerman, Secretary of State
and former Governor of Wisconsin; former State Senator H. E. Dillinger,
of Eldorado County, California; Mr. Harry B. Mitchell, former President
of the U.S. Civil Service Commission; etc., etc.
Petition Presented at Lake Success
The Petition, which was presented at United Nations Interim Head-
quarters, Lake Success, New York, on August 2, 1950, urged the United
Nations, "in view of the worldwide use of Esperanto, the only auxiliary
language which has had appreciable success", to "help to spread the
use of this language in every possible way; for example, by encouraging
its teaching in schools where teachers are available, and developing its
use in travel, international commerce and correspondence". Signers in-
cluded President Vincent Auriol of France, the Prime Ministers of four
European nations, 405 members of parliaments and legislatures, 1,228
leading educators, about 40,000 teachers, 1,970 lawyers, 1,714 clergy-
men, 5,262 scientists, 2,001 hotel men, 643 leaders of labor unions,
1,509 journalists, 5,113 physicians, and many others prominent in their
own fields or in world affairs.
When the Petition was presented at Lake Success, six members of the
Esperanto delegation, born in six different countries (the United States,
Britain, Brazil, Germany, Spain and the Ukraine) made short speeches in

Esperanto as well as in English, French, Spanish, and Russian, official
languages of U.N. This was the first time in the history of the United
Nations that addresses in the world interlanguage were heard at U.N.
Headquarters.
In accepting the Petition on behalf of the United Nations, Assistant
Secretary-General Benjamin Cohen, of Chile, said that "as a practical
means of intercommunication, Esperanto seems to be able to play a most
useful role". In a letter dated August 10, 1950, addressed to the Presi-
dent of the Esperanto Association of North America, Mr. Cohen wrote:
"Under instructions from the Secretary-General, your Petition and sup-
porting documents have been referred to UNESCO."
At the Seventh Session of UNESCO, held in Paris, the General Con-
ference adopted on December 10, 1952, a resolution proposed by the Swiss
delegation, authorizing the Director-General to "communicate to Member
States the international Petition in favor of Esperanto, which has been
submitted to the United Nations and forwarded by that Organization to
UNESCO, and to undertake, in the light of the comments received, the
necessary preparatory work to enable the General Conference to decide,
at its Eighth Session, upon the action to be taken on this petition."
UNESCO Headquarters Took Action
In compliance with this resolution, a letter (CL/728) was sent by the
Acting Director-General of UNESCO to all governments on February 9,
1953- It enclosed "the text of the Petition lodged with the United Nations
by a delegation of the Universal Esperanto Association and of the Es-
peranto Association of North America on 2 August 1950, and forwarded
by the United Nations Secretariat to the Secretariat of UNESCO". It re-
quested the governments to supply "any information, views or observ-
ations which your government may wish to furnish", especially on "how
far the teaching and use of Esperanto extend in your country, the results
obtained, and what practical plans, in your government's view, should
be submitted to the General Conference at its Eighth Session to give ef-
fect to the hope expressed in the attached petition."
Replies were received from 38 governments. Ten were completely fav-
orable and recommended that UNESCO take action in favor of Esperanto.
A few of the others were outspokenly negative, but a, substantial majority
were non-committal, and a number of them expressed uneasiness about
the possibility that UNESCO might undertake something that would strain
its limited financial resources. In recent years many governments, includ-
ing the United States, have insisted that UNESCO, which in its first
years had launched an excessively large number of unrelated projects,
restrict its activities to a few vital fields and that no new projects be
undertaken without a cautious assessment of the budgetary implications.
The fear that, in connection with the Esperanto Petition, UNESCO might
embark on something that might cost a great deal of money was probably
the most important single factor working against positive action for Es-
peranto at the present time.
In August 1953, the Department of State in Washington transmitted to
UNESCO a detailed memorandum on "Esperanto in the United States of
America," prepared by the Esperanto Association of North America, but
"without comment" and without supporting the "conclusions and recom-

mendations" of the document. Because "in the United States the teach-
ing of Esperanto is a matter for decision by local school systems, and it
is, presumably, a matter within the domestic jurisdiction of other Member
States," and "because of the demands already being made on UNESCO's
resources," the Department stated that "it would be unwise for UNESCO
to embark upon further action or study on the subject of Esperanto."
As far as we know, the decision on this reply was reached exclusive-
ly inside the Department of State, which did not consult the members of
the U. S. National Commission for UNESCO nor any Congressional Com-
mittee nor any non-governmental organization. Congressman Hugh J. Ad-
donizio, of New Jersey, who approached the State Department about the
matter in the late summer of 1954, was told: "There has been no substan-
tial change in UNESCO's program or budget since the Seventh Session of
the General Conference, and so it will be our aim at the Eighth Session
to encourage the organization to intensify its work in basic programs,
chiefly those relating to illiteracy and fundamental education."
In a Report submitted to the Eighth Session of the General Confer-
ence of UNESCO, Dr. Luther H. Evans, Director-General, summarized the
replies received from the governments, pointing out that, since only ten
governments recommended that UNESCO take action in favor of Esper-
anto, he had "not included in the draft program for 1955-56 any special
activities connected with Esperanto."
Budget-Conscious Delegates
The budget-conscious delegates at Montevideo were determined to
avoid new projects which might require more than nominal expenditures.
This factor inevitably worked against the Esperanto Petition, regard-
less of its intrinsic merits.
The fact that the teaching of Esperanto in the schools was stressed
in many of the promotional activities connected with the Esperanto Pe-
tition was bound to arouse objections on the part of delegates from coun-
tries whose constitutional systems do not give the central government
control over the school curriculum. In the United States, the Federal
Government has no authority over what is taught in the schools. A simi-
lar situation prevails in Canada, Switzerland, several Latin American
countries, and, to a somewhat lesser extent, in Great Britain.
Another unfavorable circumstance in Montevideo was the fact that
delegations to UNESCO conferences are appointed by the Foreign Min-
istries of the different countries, while governmental action favoring Es-
peranto has in most cases been taken by Education and Commerce De-
partments. It does happen from time to time that the left hand does not
know what the right hand has been doing. Several instances of this kind
could be observed at Montevideo. The most striking example was Den-
mark. One of the Danish delegates in the Program Committee of the Con-
ference violently opposed Esperanto while at the very same time in Mon-
tevideo, where the Conference was held, a motion picturewith Esperanto
text was shown, which had been produced by the Danish Government for
the purpose of attracting tourists to Denmark.
Fortunately, however, the circumstances just mentioned were more
than outbalanced by a number of favorable factors. In addition to those
explained earlier, the pro-Esperanto attitude of the daily newspapers in

Montevideo and the active promotion work of the Esperanto Society of Ur-
uguay (Professor Manuel Fernandez Mene'ndez, President, and Professor
Victor Luis Cao, Secretary) made themselves felt. The fact that, just
before the final vote, the British delegation announced that it would vote
for the Esperanto resolution may well have had the effect of swinging
some undecided votes in the pro-Esperanto direction.
What Does It Mean?
The vote of the Montevideo UNESCO Conference is a great moral vic-
tory for Esperanto. Recognition of "the results obtained by Esperanto
in the field of international intellectual exchanges and in efforts aimed
at bringing the peoples of the world closer together" is now a matter of
record. The Director-General of UNESCO has been instructed to follow
further developments in the practical use of Esperanto. This keeps the
door open for future action in UNESCO when circumstances warrant it.
The teaching of Esperanto in the schools has been recognized as a mat-
ter of interest to UNESCO.
While members of the Esperanto movement throughout the world may
justifiably rejoice in this favorable outcome of the Esperanto debate in
Montevideo, they should beware of misconceptions and exaggerated ex-
pectations. Under the terms of the Montevideo resolution, UNESCO will
be obliged to pay attention to the future progress of Esperanto in educa-
tion, science, and culture. But the teaching and promotion of Esperanto,
the planning and systematic extension of the practical uses of the world
interlanguage in all fields of human endeavor, the job of overcoming in-
difference and prejudice regarding this neutral and easy-to-learn means
of understanding and worldwide cooperation, will remain the responsibil-
ity of the organized Esperanto movement and of its supporters in govern-
ments, nongovernmental organizations, science, culture, religion, educa-
tion, business, labor, communications, literature, and the arts.
UNESCO has not taken over the task of promoting and teaching Es-
peranto. It has not pledged its financial and organizational support. It
has not decided to use Esperanto in its own activities and publications.
It has, however, taken cognizance of the aims and claims of the world
interlanguage, has noted its accomplishments in the past, and has de-
clared its willingness to follow future developments with interest and
attention, because the results obtained by Esperanto "are in accordance
with the aims and ideals of UNESCO."

ESPERANTO IN ACTION
AROUND THE WORLD
In the Brazilian State of Pernambuco, the Secretary for Education and
Cultural Affairs, Dr. Gilberto Osorio de Andrada, issued as this year's
Directive No. 14 a recommendation urging elementary and high school
teachers to learn Esperanto.
The Viest German Minister of Transportation, Dr. Hans Seebohm, de-
clared in a recent letter addressed to Herr Bruno Gahler, a prominent
member of the Esperanto movement: "I consider Esperanto as a means
of decisive importance for the establishment of a solid basis of mutual
understanding among men and nations. Therefore, I shall continue to wel-
come any activities in favor of Esperanto."
"Notes on the Perplexities of a Pioneer" was the title of an article
by N. Williams in the Bulletin of the Association of Headmasters of
Lancashire County Secondary Modern Schools, in England. Mr. Williams
related how Esperanto was introduced into the curriculum of the school
of which he is the headmaster and how this subject subsequently exer-
cised a remarkable influence on individual students and on the school.
In Finland, serialized Esperanto lessons are now being published in
the illustrated boys' magazine Joka Poika ("Every Boy's"). After two
preliminary articles, the editor received 1600 requests from readers for
these lessons, which are prepared by the Secretary of the Finnish Teach-
ers' Esperanto League. The weekly newspaper of the Finnish Teachers'
Association features an Esperanto section twice a month.
In France, a rapidly growing number of city councils have voted for
a resolution advocating the introduction of Esperanto into the curriculum
of public schools. Latest additions to the list: Marnay, Thiers, Dole,
Gap, and Vellexon.
In the Australian capital, Canberra, the latest addition to the list of
Esperanto classes is one held in the morning for the benefit of house-
wives who find it inconvenient to come at night. Mrs. Torr, Treasurer of
the Canberra Esperanto Club, is the teacher.
The Botanical Society of Japan gives summaries in English or Es-
peranto of papers in Japanese appearing in its journal.
The Mayor of Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, where the first Universal
Esperanto Congress was held in the summer of 1905, has urged the
French Postal Administration to issue a commemorative stamp on the
occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of that Congress. Countries which
have issued stamps in honor of Esperanto in recent years include Aus-
tria, Yugoslavia, and Brazil.

An International Esperanto Youth Conference is scheduled to be held
at L'Aquile, in Italy's Abruzzi Mountains, from August 7 to 13, 1955. It
is organized by the Esperanto Youth Organization, TEJO.
In Natal, capital of the Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Norte, three
elementary schools recently opened Esperanto classes. Attendance is
voluntary.
"Kon-Tiki", the best-selling report about Thor HeyerdahTs raft expe-
dition across the Pacific, is scheduled for publication in a Czech trans-
lation in the near future. The translation was made from Esperanto. (The
Esperanto edition, beautifully illustrated, printed, and bound, in excel-
lent Esperanto, is still available from EANA at S3.90.
Esperanto dialogue is a special feature in several parts of a motion
picture now being produced by Trans-Rhein Film in Wiesbaden, Germany,
a subsidiary of Columbia Pictures. The German version is titled Vow
Himmel Gefallen ("Fallen from the Blue Sky"). The English version will
be released under the title "Special Delivery". The Esperanto-speaking
stars in the picture are Rene Deltgen and Eva Bartok. The scene of ac-
tion is a United States Legation somewhere in Southeastern Europe. The
natives speak Esperanto in order to avoid identification of the country.
Well-known pictures with dialogue in Esperanto include also (not count-
ing documentary films, of course): Road to Singapore (with Dorothy La-
mour, Bob Hope, and Bing Crosby); Idiot's Delight (with Clark Gable and
Norma Shearer); The Dictator (with Charlie Chaplin); Neutral Port (with
Yvonne Arnaud and Will Fyfe); The Hermit ofSamburan (with Betty Field,
Frederic March, and Sir Cedric Hardwick); Conspiracy, and others.
In the British Association of the Hard of Hearing the International
Friendship  Sub-Committee is encouraging the use of Esperanto.
A new Esperanto Course on Records was recently published in Stock-
holm, Sweden, under the editorial direction of Bengt Joelsson. In the
United States, the well-known Connor Course, by Doris and G. Alan Con-
nor, designed with the cooperation of Professor Harold S. Sloan, is an
up-to-date and beautifully produced Esperanto course on records, which
has been extremely popular ever since it appeared, four years ago.
Two Dutch encyclopedias, recently published in new editions, "Wink-
ler-Prins" and "Katholieke Encyclopedic", contain detailed and up-to-
date articles on Esperanto written by G.P. de Bruin and Dr. W. Manders,
respectively. The latter is a Member of the Esperanto Academy.
Esperanto brochures and folders published by city administrations,
chambers of commerce, railroads, airlines, shipping companies, etc., to
attract tourists, are becoming so numerous that it is difficult to keep
track of them. Here are some of the latest additions to the list: Scandi-
navia (Forenede Steamship Co., Copenhagen); Germany (German Federal
Railroads); Netherlands (KLM Airline); Salvador, Brazil, Bologna and
Padova, Italy; Nancy and Gap, France; Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Bonn,
Hanover, Stuttgart, Germany; Styria and Salzburg, Austria; Novi Sad,
Yugoslavia; Antwerp, Belgium; Haarlem, Netherlands; Bodo, Norway.

AMBASSADOR HENRI BONNET ~ NOTED FRIEND OF ESPERANTO
The beloved French Ambassador, Henri Bonnet, rendered great
services to Esperanto during his activities at the Institute of Intel-
lectual Cooperation, in Geneve, long before the war. The following
letter demonstrates that he has steadily maintained his interest in
Esperanto. Credit for the information which inspired a cordial ex-
change between the Ambassador and EANA, upon his retirement as
Ambassador to the United States, is due entirely to our Esperanto

'LETTER TO THE EDITOR' CAMPAIGN GATHERS MOMENTUM
The new Committee to organize a systematic campaign for letters to
editors is already functioning smoothly. According to a recent report by
Chairman Richard T. Vineski, who is serving as "coordinator", thirteen
members have now joined with him in this effort. They are : Donald R.
Broadribb, Jarvis E, Bush, Lilio Fuller, Francis E. Helmuth, F, Karl Im-
meke, J, Henry Kruse, Harold Mason, V. Rev. G. N, Pausback, Andrew L
Rogus, Ted Stewart, Donald Walton, ]on Willarson, and Elsie Yunghans,
They have made plans to send out approximately 400 letters to over 175
newspapers and magazines. We shall be reporting the results of the cam-
paign in each issue of AE. However, Mr. Vineski is still asking for more
volunteers, especially in Canada. So if you are interested please write
for full details from the Central Office of EANA.

/IT the beginning of the New Year, I should like to direct your think-
m^ri ing toward the Golden Jubilee Congress of 1955. We are gratified
that considerable preparation has already been made by our Executive
Secretary and those who are so ably assisting him. There is no doubt
about the entertainment or about the abundant new information which will
be available for all those who attend. However, we desire at our next
Congress to increase the acquaintanceship among the membership to a
point never reached before in the history of EANA.
We believe that if we know each other better, we can agree on increas-
ingly positive steps in building a larger and greater EANA. Friendship
must surely come before fullest unity can be attained. Many of us believe
that if we know each other better, we can agree on more concerted efforts
in solving the great problems before us. I should like for each member of
EANA to ask himself the question, "How can I assist in providing trans-
lations of books to add to our world Esperanto library? How can I make
it possible to provide local and coast-to-coast TV programs in Esper-
anto? What plans have I made for increasing membership in EANA? What
plans have I made for disseminating information about Esperanto?" Bring
a list of suggestions concerning these questions to the Jubilee Congress.
You will be apprised of the full program well before the Congress con-
venes. However, now is the time to resolve to attend, to participate, to
become acquainted with every person at the Congress.
I bid you God's speed and look forward to seeing you at the Golden

The "Golden Jubilee Congress for Unity and Fraternity", has been
inVited to Milwaukee by the Esperanto Society of Milwaukee. This city,
famed for its hospitality, rests in the approximate center of North Amer-
ica] and every member who can possibly artend should be there to enjoy

COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB
COMPLETES YEAR'S PROJECT ON ESPERANTO
In January 1954, the Central Office received a request from the
International Relations Club of Shurtleff College in Illinois, for ma-
terials and ideas to work up a project on Esperanto, We were happy
to assist in this worthwhile endeavor, and remained in touch with the
young people while they developed the program. It is with pleasure,
therefore, that we publish the final results of the project, as written
by David Murdoch, active leader in the Club.
Our I. R. C. did complete its project of producing a program for the
propagation of information on Esperanto. Let me describe it for you.
The program lasts 35 minutes and consists of a speech on the history
and merits and uses of Esperanto (this we took mainly from the first part
of the book Esperanto: The World Interlanguage), plus some 35 slides
illustrating these merits, history, and uses. Our slides include a map of
Europe, a portrait of Zamenhof, slides on the U. N., several slides of
other international "languages" like Morse Code and pictorial road signs,
some slides on advertising and travel, a few slides on Esperanto books
and magazines, and 4 slides illustrating Esperanto grammar. In one of
the grammatical slides we play a kind of world building game with Espe-
ranto root words, prefixes, suffixes and endings. All the slides go right
along with the speech at regular intervals.
The program was first given in one of our chapel services in April
by our I. R. C. Immediately afterwards we were asked by Dr. McDermott,
the financial secretary of Shurtleff College, to come and give ou' pro-
gram before the Woodriver Rotary Club (Woodriver is a neighboring town).
This we did, and the club members (40 of them) asked us questions after
the showing, which took up 30 more minutes! They seemed very inter-
ested. This past summer we gave the program before the Alton Rotary
Club at which 50 members were in attendance, and again it was very well
received. We presented the program also before the combined Women's
Auxiliary of Woodriver with a turnout of 50 members.
We also received two write-ups in the Alton Evening Telegraph (each
a full colum). One was actually entitled "How to talk turkey to the Rus-
sians" and was quite humorously written.
Thank you again for all your help. Since we have no immediate en-
gagements, I am sending the slides to you so you can study them and
give us your suggestions for improvements.

Editor's Note: For David's and the Club's benefit, let us add that
the slides and accompanying script are excellent. In fact, they would
seem to be the answer to many requests the Central Office receives for
Assembly programs on Esperanto. To test out this idea, the slides and
script are being loaned to a private boy's high school in New York for
presentation as an assembly program on February 22. The slides were
also shown at the February meeting of the Esperanto Society of New
York, and were enthusiastically received. Congratulations to the I.R.C.
for a job well done! We recommend similar projects to other schools.

Harold Mason, London, Ontario, ne nur aktive partoprenas en EANA,

G. Norman McKinney, Sault Ste Marie, denove fariĝas Patrono por la
Jubilea Jaro de EANA, kaj kuragigas nin jene: "Thank you for outstand-
ing patience and generosity which produces the best, lasting-effect pub-
lic relations because it emphasizes the importance of each member of
the group, even such an isolated 'ulo' as myself." Ni altetaksas la opi-
nion de S-ro McKinney, car li estas sperta ĝuste pri publikaj rilatoj pro
multjara laboro en radio.
Veferono J. W. Young, Brantford, Ontario, metas pensindan demandon,
kiu meritas konsideron: "Ĉu vi ne opinias, ke Esperantistoj faris eraron

David W. M. Jenkins, Toronto, Ontario, dum pasintaj jaroj estis unu
el la plej aktivaj kaj sukcesaj propagandistoj por nia afero per leteroj
al redaktoroj tra la tuta kontinento. Li plene meritas sian lokon inter
Jubileanoj de EANA kielaltŝatata honora veterano.

ESPERANTA    KRONIKO
La Esperanto-Asocio de Nov-Jersio, en sia novembra kunveno, pre-
zentis la filmon "Danlando" antaŭ bona grupo de proksimume 25 membroj
kaj lernantoj. En Januaro membroj de la Esperanto-Societo de Nov-Jorko
kune vojaĝis al Nov-Jersio por ceesti kunvenon, en kiu Harold Isele mon-
tris belajn, kolorajn lumbildojn pri sia vizito en Anglujo.
La Esperanto-Societo de Nov-Jorko, en sia decembra kunveno, havis
la plezuron akcepti kiel gaston S-ron K. Baumslag el Johannesburg, Sud-
Afriko. En la sama kunveno paroladis David Jagerman pri la temo "Kom-
paro de la Bazaj Principoj de Esperanto kaj Interlingua."
En la Jurnalo "Verona-Cedar Grove Times" aperis longa artikolo pri
intervjuo kun F-ino Elsie Yunghans, kiun oni priskribis kiel "instruisto
de Esperanto, la Monda Interlingvo". F-ino Yunghans klarigis per anek-
dotoj el siaj vojagoj pri la problemo de miskompreno pro lingvaj malfa-
cilaĵoj, kaj donis koncizan raporton pri Esperanto kaj ĝia uzo.
La Esperanto-Societo de ĉikago raportis sukcesajn kunvenojn dum
Decembro kaj Januaro. Oni komencas la programojn per ekzerco por kom-
encantoj, kaj poste okazigas ĝeneralan diskuton en Esperanto. Donald
W, Hathaway, Prezidanto de la Societo, aranĝis pri lokigo de la "Vojag-
anta Ekspozicio de Esperanto" en la Komunuma Domo, Winnetka, Ilinojo.
El Sacramento, Kalifornio, F-ino Ida Belle Craig raportis, ke nova
kurso de Esperanto komenciĝis lastatempe en la loka plenkreskula lern-
ejo. Si diris, ke tre plaĉas al la grupanoj ludi la novan kartludon "Scrab-
ble", sed en Esperanto! Ankaŭ en la lernejo de F-ino Craig troviĝas Es-
peranta klubeto de ok lernantoj, kiuj bone progresas.
Pastro Kenneth A. Anderson, membro de EANA depost 1942, estas
nun pastro de la Unua Baptista Preĝejo, Mt. Sterling, Ilinojo. Li kaj la
edzino Marcia, kaj tri filinoj, Barbara, Christine kaj Judy, translokiĝis
al la nova hejmo en Oktobro.
Henry B. Nilsted, Usona maristo, sendis la sekvantan letereton: "Car
mi estas studanto de la Connor Course, eble vi Satus scii kiel mi suk-
cesis amikigi kun gesamideanoj en Rijeka, Jugoslavujo. Mi renkontis ge-
sinjorojn Gropuzzo kaj dank' al la kurso kaj precipe la diskoj, mi povis
paroli iom kaj kompreni sufiĉe bone. Estis la unua fojo, ke mi provis pa-
roli Esperante. Estas mirinda sperto esti ebla renkonti homojn kaj havi
nenian baron de lingvo. Mi estas tre dankema al Esperanto. Gi malfer-
mas novan mondon por Ĉi tiu maristo."
La ĉiutaga televida programo "Sentimental You", WRCA, Nov-Jorko,
je la 10-a de Januaro invitis Doris T. Connor paroli pri Esperanto. Oni
komencis la intervjuon per bildigo de la verda stelo kiel simbolo de Es-
peranto, kaj poste priparolis la celon kaj konstruon de la interlingvo.
Lo Esperanto-Klubo de Los Angeles raportis, ke la decembra Zaraen-
hofa festmanĝo estis bona sukceso kun pli ol 40 ceestantoj. Antaŭ ne-
longe vizitis la Klubon Frank Johansson el Svedujo, kiu estis annul kel-
kaj  jaroj membro de la Sveda Misio por la Ruga Kruco en Koreo.

E. Bush faris mallongan paroladon titolitan "Eta Viro", kaj Jon Willarson
laŭtlegis sian speciale verkitan originalan poemon pri D-ro Zamenhof.
En la lukse presita gazeto "Georgia Tech Engineer", eldono de stu-
dentoj de la Instituto de Teknologio en la ŝtato Georgio, aperis tutpaĝa
redakcia artikolo subskribita de nia membro Cecil R. Phillips. Titolo de
la artikolo estis "La Vivanta Respondo", kaj en ĝi S-ro Phillips trafe
argumentas pri la utilo, neceso kaj uzebleco de Esperanto. Aldona ko-
mento donis ankaŭ la adreson de EANA por plena informo. Antaŭnelonge
S-ro Phillips skribis al la Centra Oficejo: "Gis nun mi donis du parol-
adojn pri la interlingvo, kaj elvokis entuziasman respondon ambaŭfoje."
Ni bedaŭras raporti, ke F-ino Josephine Nelson mortis la 25-an de
Decembro en Los Angeles, Kalifornio. Jus antaŭ tiu dato Si sendis sian
kotizon al EANA kiel Veterana Membro.  Ni perdis fidelan Esperantiston.
Lo Esperanto-Asocio de Lima, Ohio, raportis, ke estraro elektitapor
la jaro 1955 estas: Prezidanto, D-rino Luella K. Beecher; Vic-Prezidanto,
S-ino Mable Jay; Sekretario-Kasisto, S-ino Arthur M. Vaughan. La grupo
denove aliĝis al EANA por la Jubilea Jaro kiel centprocenta klubo, tio
estas, Ciu membro de la Asocio estas ankaŭ membro de EANA. "Onklino
Lu" (la karesnomo por ilia amata prezidantino D-rino Luella K. Beecher)
estas nuntempe en Grenado, Britaj Okcidentaj Indioj, kie Si iris por loĝi
dum la vintro kaj por helpi pri la disvastigo de la Baha'i Kredo.
Blanche Parker kaj Barbara, el Los Angeles, kiujn Ĉiuj admiras pro
aktiveco en la Esperanta movado, nun troviĝas en Cuernavaca, Meksiko.
S-ino Parker raportis pri tre interesaj kunvenoj de la klubo en Meksiko-
Urbo, kune kun la konataj Esperantistoj S-ro Azorin kaj S-ro Serrano. Kaj
la verda stelo ĉiam troviĝas sur ŝia aŭtomobilo, kie ajn Si iras.

ESPERANTA    KRONIKO
Mory Morgoref HcBride, la fama jurnalisto kies komentario estas pres-
ita en centoj da ĵurnaloj tra Usono, pritraktis la lingvan problernon en
artikolo je la 12-a de Januaro. Si menciis, ke "Esperanto estas la plej
sukcesa provo de internacia lingvo, kiel ankaŭ la plej facila por lerni
kaj paroli."
"Cio pri Lingvoj" (All About Language) estas la titolo de nova libro
por junuloj, verkita de la bone konata kaj sperta lingvisto, Profesoro
Mario A. Pei. En ĝi Profesoro Pei pledas por internacia lingvo kaj tre
favore mencias Esperanton.
La loka teatra grupo en Vicksburg, Misisipo, prezentis dum Januaro
teatrajeton verkitan de nia talenta membro, S. Miller Williams, ha. teatr-
ajeto nomata "Celo de Morto" estas alegorio, kiu prezentas okazajojn
en la lando "Vialandia". La programbroŝuto klarigas, ke "Vialandia"
signifies "Your Land" en la interlingvo Esperanto.
S-ino Angela Alfaroli, Vineland, N. J., konstante subtenas EANA kaj
faras propagandon en sia urbo. S-ino Alfaroli estas unu el tiuj, kiuj sub-
tenis la preson de la Reecf-gramatiko antaŭ kelkaj jaroj. Ricevinte Cekon
por sia 'akcio' tiutilate, Si tuj sendis ĝin al EANA por frupagi membrec-
on kiel patrono, kaj mendis la libron Esperanto: The World Interlanguage
en kvanto, por donaci al bibliotekoj kaj altlernejoj en sia urbo. Aliaj
Esperantistoj devus sekvi Sian ekzemplon rilate al provizado de biblio-
tekoj per tiu libro. ĉu ĝi troviĝas en la bibliotekoj de via urbo? Se ne,
ni konsilas, ke vi havigu ĝin al tiuj.
J. Henry Kruse, Jr., nia blinda kunlaboranto en Nov-Jersio, mirinde
laboras por Esperanto diversmaniere. Krom konstanta laborado por la
organizo de blinduloj, li trovas tempon por instrui Esperantan kurson en
Morristown, N. J. Antaŭnelonge li sciigis, ke li ricevis brajlan inform-
peton pri Esperanto el Sud-Afriko. Ja vere oni legas tra la tuta mondo
pri lia agado.
Hiaj Veteranoj. En la sekvonta numero de AE ni intencas komenci
novan rubrikon en kiu ni priskribos la Esperantan agadon de la pioniroj
kaj veteranoj de EANA. La sekvantaj jam ensendis material on: John L,
Spence, Fred L. Wharff, Julia May Leach, E. R. Terrill, George W. Has-
kell, D-ro J. J. Scholtes, L. J. Pelt, Walter A. Buchheim, Lillian E. Fuller,

La Internacia Federacio de Esperantistaj Fervojistoj celas starigi
vojaĝantan ekspozicion pri Esperanto, kiu vojaĝos de urbo al urbo en
Eŭropo en speciala vagono. La IFEF kolektas ciuspecajn materialojn por
