Lia merito ne estas sole en tiu- li dis-
donas senpage la plimulton je liaj eldonoj
kun la landaj kaj eksterlandaj esperant-
istaj asocioj, en vera liberaleco por la afero.
Pernambuka Esperanto-Asocio jam ri-
cevis yalorajn proponajojn je Iibroj kaj
steletoj el Ismael Braga, kio estis, por ni
netaksebla helpo kaj bonega servo liberita
de li al esperantista afero en Pernam-
buko.
Tiu malgranda    registro    ne    esprimas
la^multon kiun Ismael meritas al ni.

Kun ĝentila antaŭparolo "Amerika Etperantic
lo" presis mian ieteron, en kiu mi kuraĝis diri, ke nun
venis nia vice en la Nova Mondn preni «ur niajn
ŝultrojn grandan partem de la laboro ĝi» nun farita
nur  de  niaj  eiiropaj  kaj   aziaj   samideanoj.
Eminentaj usonaj samideanoj afable respondis al
tiu letero kaj starigis laborplanojn. Al mi iajna., do,
ke mi davas pli precize eldiri mian penaon kaj peti
diskutadon pri ĝi por ke ni venu al klara kompreno
pri la afero kaj marŝu rekte al celo; tial mi aendaa al
vi artikoleton, kiun vi bonvolos tralegi, kaj »e eble
represigi en  Esperanta gazeto.
Pro ĉiu  respondo  mi   jam  de  nun  sincere dankas.

prezenti sur 6i tiu paĝo) dissendas tre interesan oirkuleron, el kiu ni povas represi nur
parton. Post citado de vortoj de Zamenhof pri la neoeso trovi en sia tempo ian gravan kom-
eroan eldonejon, kiu subtenus la Esperanto-movadon, li aldonas jene:
"La rapida progresado de Esperanto dum la mondagado do Haohatte et Cie.,pruvis sen ombro
de dubo, ke la Majstro estis tre prava. La bato.kiun nia movado suferis kiam tiu firmo for-
lasis la Esperanto-fakon denove kaj plej dolore pruvis pravecon de D-ro Zamenhof. Eldonoj
farataj de privataj personoj aS esperantistaj sooietoj ne solvas la problemon. oar nur pro-

Couto Fernandas sukcesis aperigi diversajn brazilajn poŝtmarkojn en Esperanto kaj havis
aliajn brilajn sukcesojn ĉe la Brazila Registarojsed kion praktikan ni rioevis por la mov-
ado, se en la librejoj ne trovigas Iibroj pri Esperanto ? Per kurso post kurso dum jardekoj
ni instruas Esperanton al tre multaj homoj, sed se ili ne trovas oiam fresan literaturon en
la librejoj, ili nepre forlasas la movadon kaj forgesas denove la lingvon. La libraja afero
estas nun oefaĵo por nia laboro. Kvankam mi pri tio estis tute konvinkita jam de multaj ja-
roj, nun mia «perto montras ke mia konvinko estis prava. Depost tri jaroj mi iroportadas kaj
eldonadas librojn por eldonista librejo,(12 librojn kaj broŝurojn pri Esperanto.)Nia enlanda
rhVr** movado ekfloris tiel rapide, post la apero de la unuaj Iibroj ke mi jam kuragi» el-
doni ankaŭ du lernolibrojn por aliaj landoj, kie mankis malkaraj lernolibroj. Ni bezonas do
kiel eble plej frue varbi gravan amerikan firmon por nia movado, au-se tio ne estos ebla-
fondi mem eldonlstan sooieton similan al la angla Esperanto Publishing Company,Liaitad, kiu

A MIRACLE ■VROOGRT BY ESPERANTO. Ordinarily we think of Esperanto as a REMEDY for the ills
of multiple laŭŭguage misunderstandings, but a case has just come to our notice whach in-
dicates that it is also a REMEDY for physical ailments( of course many people will say:
"I told you so")making it a panacea for all the ills-mental or ph\sical-that flesh is
heir to. Early last September, Mrs, Reine Griswold-aged 70-living about ten miles from
Oklahoma City, in an automobile accident was so seriously injured that doctors held little
hope for her recovery,(they didn't know about Esperanto then). Everyone was talking about
the coming of Miss Orloff, the Cseh teacher of Esperanto, from Boston, in October to start
courses. Mrs.Griswold heard some of the talk, and as she had been an Esperanto student in
other days, she determined to take part in those lessons, regardless of doctor's opinions.
When she announced her decision consternation reigned. She left the hospital a few days be-
fore the Orloff courses began, and because her folks did not wish to excite her by opposi-
tion, they drove her to and from the city every evening. On meeting Miss Orloff, the first
evening, she said "Miss Orloff, I've just come out of the hospital, after a terrible auto-
mobile acoident, and I cannot write the lessons, my hand is so weak and shaky"Miss Orloff,
noting that she was still very nervous from the shock,told her "don't feel that you have
to do anything but look on, until you feel better". The second evening, when Miss Orloff
called for the written work, she was astounded to find among them, Mrs.Griswold's paper.
Later, Mrs. Griswold said"I don't know how it happened, it seems like a miracle. I had
tried before to write but couid'nt do it, I was too weak to hold the pencil, but while
studying-and trying-strength came to my hand, and I stayed up until midnight to write up
my lesson, and how I love it. There's something in Esperanto that gives me life and stren-
gth". There are four written assignments in the course, and Mrs.Griswold passed all four
on time, and before the course was over(ten days)she was almost completely recovered.

CAN ONE MAN DO ANYTHING?
TOOHISJfTEN a" task is "ĝTven up when a
little judicious effort would put it
over with benefit to all concerned.
For a long time the "Esperanto Voĉo"
in Rome, has been broadcasting in
Esperanto twioe a week, but at the
inconvenient hour(to Americans) of 4
P.M., when very few Esperantists are
at liberty to listen. Mr. C.N.Ayres,
of Saugus, Mass., an Esperanto fervo-
rulo, thought something might be done
about it. Accordingly he wrote to the
"Esperanto Vooo"explaining the situ-
ation, and suggesting that 15 minutes
be given to Esperanto during the No.
American hour. He was told that the
program was so full it could not be
done; but his letter was passed along
to some one higher up, and within 3
days he received a letter from the
director in chief saying that his
complaint was well founded, and that
everything possible would be done to
meet it. A little later he was noti-
fied that his suggestion had been
adopted, and that beginning Jan. 1st,
Esperanto broadcasts would be sent
out at about 8 P.M.,(E.S-T) during
the North American hour8 Monday eve-
nings, 31 meter band,9.82 meg.
It is hoped that many will listen,
and will write postcards (3 cents)to
the "Esperanto VoSo"(Radio Station
E.I.A.R.,via Montello,5,Rome,Italy)

friendly concession to American

Suggestion by Saugus man
Launches Rome Broadcast
Through the efforts of a Sau-
gus devotee of Esperanto, "the
universal language," the Italian
wovernment has recently authorized"
a weekly short-wave radio broad-
cast from Rome for Esperantists on
the North  American continent.
The program was organized as
the result of a suggestion by Cle-
ment M. Ayres of Hazel street,"
Saugus, who is employed in the
accounting department at the
River Works of the General Elec-
tric company. Mr. Ayres, a student
of Esperanto for the past two
years, proposed the weekly broad-
cast after hearing short-wave pro-
grams from the Rome station.
After considerable correspondence,
the Esperanto broadcast was in-
augurated  two  weeks  ago.
The broadcast' is given every
Monday evening at approximately
8 o'clock from station R20 in Rome
and consists largely of news items
concerning European affairs. Spon-
sored by Esperanto Voice, the -Es-
perantist Society of Italy, the pro-
gram lasts for 15 minutes and pro-
vides American Esperantists with
their first regular international
program.
Lynn Residents Active
The Saugus man is one of many
Esperantists in Greater Lynn. Lo-
cal followers of the language in-
cludeH. B. Hastings of saugus, who
has-given several courses in the
language. Others in this section
who are students of the language
include Mrs. A. E. Bangs, 137 Bel-
levue road, Lynn. Several hundred
Esperantists are members of a
Greater Boston society to further
the  use  of the  language.
During the two years which he
has been interested in the sub-
ject, Mr. Ayres has corresponded
with fellow enthusiasts all over
the world.
The language was invented in
1887 by a Polish physician, Lazaro
Ludovico Zamenhof. Today there
are more than 1,500,000 Esperan-
tists in the world. Esperanto is
most" widely used today in Holland
and Sweden, but prior to a ban
issued by Hitler it was extensively
used in Germany.
The language has only 16 simple
rules of grammar to which there
are no exceptions. Its huge vocabu-
lary is compounded from roots com-
mon to many languages. Though
it is governed strictly by its rules,
Esperanto lends itself to 'precise
shades of meaning. Through grad-
ual extension of the language, Es-
perantists hope one day to improve
international good will and remove
barriers to trade and.friendly re-

(from Mr. E. van Veenendaal-Bouwes, at Liramexi, 17,H. Netherlands,) a three page circular in
Esperanto, announcing the establishamtntof a new organisation, not confined to the spreading
of Esperanto, hut desiring a large leaven of Esperantists in its membership, and devoted to
what may he considered as practically "the internal idea" of Esperanto.  Those familiar with
the life of Zaraenhof know that for many years, and especially toward the close of his life he
gave much thought and lahor to the purpose of spreading a world-embracing doctrine of cathol-
icity, an inclusive faith which he called by the name of "homaranisma," a word which may he
translated as «mankind! era," or as "all-world brotherhood.11  He regarded this as something
distinct indeed from Esperanto, hut naturally linked with it as an influence co-working for
the good of mankind.
We give space here for a translation of part of the circular received, for we believe
this to he a matter on which Esperantists should "be informed, even though not all may see the
proposal as wise or practical for present realization»
"Even before the Paris conference (1914) Zaraenhof did his utmost to bring about a depart-
mental gathering concerning 'Bbmaranismo.'  When, that did not succeed, he tried to arrange
a post-congress session.  But meanwhile the world war exploded, and he was compelled, while
en route to the congress, to escape homeward»  Nevertheless he persisted. Even in December
of 1916 he thought about arranging a meeting on 'homaranismo1 in Switzerland» To it he would
invite professors outside and inside of the Esperanto movement»  He prepared a circular» an-
nouncing that the meeting would occur in December, 1916»  However, the war continued»  On
the manuscript he afterward crossed out the date and wrote instead: sin the first days of
August, 1917.'  The war continued»  Again he corrected the date and wrote: "after the end
of the war.1  Is it not tragic?
«The 12th of August, 1939, in Servuren (Belgium), after 25 years, finally the Esperant-
ists founded the movement for which Dr. Zaraenhof yearned during Ms whole life»  And even
now it is bora in the midst of many sorrows.  However, in order to spread abroad the ideals
of Zamenhof, we surely need a strong kernel of Esperantists; for it is a world movement, and
as a unifying tie we need Esperanto»  To fully understand and propagate •Tatmonda Movado' it
is necessary that one study the life of Samenhof»  The adherents of 'Tutmonda Movado1 strive
to understand and respect every one's manner of thought and not to attack other men, even, if
they attack us* Tor this purpose I quote a few portions from the 'Original Works' of Zamen-
hof regarding this movement,
" I.Bumnitisa(Homaranismo)would demand the writing of many great works, which sooner or
later will surely be prepared by human!tists,The them® is s© inclusive chat, however much
I may talk, I would not make clear even she humdredth part of what must be clarified.
" II.My project is not dangerous for the Esperanto movement.Oh,NoI I em sure that if you
will thiak over the matter well, you will reach the conviction that both «ovementaTire kin-
red and indissolubly bound together.-Just as homaranlsao oannot be realized without a neu-
tral language,so the idea of a neutral language cannot be realized without homaraaismo.
" III.I regard as the fundamental law among our principles,this rules"let in relation to
others as would that others should act in relation to you} and listen always to the voice
of your conscience,"
" rV.Never must wo hat© or persecute anyone because his faith is different from ours»
" V.Leaving to all men full liberty to have that internal arced which seems bo him best,
we propose to oreat® only an impartial framework,which is able, in. ethics, in manners,and
in ooasunity life to unify all independently thinking man, irrespective of what may be the
philosophic and religious beliefs of ©aoh on©.
"VI.The true barriers between men are only the difference of language and the religious,
political, economic, and olass differences.
" VII.The hatred in the world is camsed not by the existence of oppressors and oppressed,
but by blind egoism, pride, and slanderous inclination.
" VIII. The aim of all men must be to create an harmonious mankind.
" IX. The personal initiative of every man is and remains absolutely free.  Men will be
educated on the basis of an impartial language, impartial manners, and impartial ethics»
All men will be blended in one great people-of-peoples.'
"Dr.Zaiaenhof has given us the practical solution for making brothers of all men, and there-
by he has solved the problem of the present day.

OUR PRESENT DUTY
From a Presidential address to the Scottish
Esperanto Federation on Hth October
(greatly abridged).
It is my considered opinion that never
before was there so much need for inter-
national understanding, and that more
than ever, in this time of war, we should
work for Esperanto. Few would deny that
the present war might not have taken place,
had the German people been allowed to
communicate freely with the peoples outside
their frontier, and known their real views
and aims. That is what led our Govern-
ment to drop not bombs, but leaflets, on
German cities. Far more talk is heard
today of the cause of the present war, and
the "prevention of future wars, than was
heard in the early months of the last conflict.
This state of the public mind is a most
suitable ground for spreading our ideal.
Faithful sowing now may bring a harvest
unobtainable from an equal effort in time
of peace.
Let us then pledge renewed allegiance to
the great cause of Esperanto, and let us
start by devotion to our own Society.
A Society can no more be run by president
and council alone, than can a ship cross the
sea manned only by captain and officers.
The members are to the society as the crew
is to the ship : they must not regard them-
selves as passengers. We must be loyal
now, more than ever before ; and there
must be no deserters. Rather let us-bring
back old members, who still have the ideal
of Esperanto at heart ; and let us go all out
to bring in new ones.
In the post-war civilization Esperanto will
play an important part. Let us see to it
that peace, when it comes, shall find us
ready.
I finish with a quotation that should be
familiar to you all. I wish I could read it
with the fire that animated Zamenhof when
he penned the words. First he describes
our present situation :—

for insertion in the current issue—and out-of-date
for the next.-We've announced occasionally that the
20th was "dead line" for items intended for the fol-
lowing month. Some interesting articles, on which,n©
doubt, considerable hard thinking has been done, can'
not be used for lack of space-Financial Committee of

to condense and abbreviate to the limit to get in as
much as appears. Typing lists of correspondents and
delegates from many lands, we have to"pigeon-hole*

read in several foreign lands. Some folks oomplain
