improved appearance-and is illustrated. It answers large
numbers of inquiries from those who have heard something
about Esperanto and wish to know more.
It appoints and directs several committees, established for promoting the
Esperanto movement in various ways. It Sells Esperanto hooks. It holds an
annual "KongresoV" which promotes acquaintance among American Esperantists
and awakens new enthusiasm.
By your membership and your payment of dues, you have the privilege
of aiding in all of this work on Behalf of a nigh ideal.

several years  experience-and always a personal friend to each student-widely
traveled,  having conducted several Caravans  to European countries during vac-
ations-last  summer he took about  40 people through various  European lands,
and to  the Universal Congress  in Warsaw.     Serious  illness  has prevented him
until recently prom active participation In his work, but now feels that  he
Is  ready for   'full  steam ahead",  In advancing the  interests  of Nia Afero-
especially with the young folks. He is teaching a class  of 42 Boy Scouts,
showing moving pictures  of foreign tours(with Esperanto groups),  and has
acted as  interpreter for Miss  Lidia Zamenhof on several occasions  when she
addressed meetings  in and around New York.  He welcomes any suggestions al-
along his particular  line.  Miss  Stoneham is  teaching:  a  class  of  85 Girl and
Boy Scouts,,   and Mr Goldman is   teaching  a  class   of  15 Harvard   stud ant a-they

The Congress Gomraittee-and many other Esperantists-are very busy making pre-
parations for the  GREATEST ANNUAL CONGRESS  in the history of EANA.  Recently
they sent a delegation to Akron to  drum up publicity-with the  aid of S-roJ
Stancliff and Betteridge-and are planning to send delegations  to Detroit  and
Chicago to *stir   'em up*.     Dec.2lst,  at the Zamenhof Anniversary Banquet,the
history and progress  of Esperanto was  shown in films.   "La Vojo"  was  sung by
the well-known Cleveland Baritone-Mr. Alfred Wright. Miss Catherine Avery,Pres.
of Shaker Heights High School Esperanto Club gave an address  on the life of
Dr.Zamenhof.  Fifty attended the banquet.The Cleveland Esperanto Association
presented a $5 check to Miss Nellie M.Luehrs  of the Clev.Public Library for
the purchase  of Esperanto books-they donate to^the Library either money or
books to commemorate the Zamenhof Anniversar^H^aembly singing of "ESPERO"
ended the banquet.

New Day".   "The New Era & Melrose Park Times"gave them a column notice, with

Those Americans who are  intelligently discriminating in the pronunciation of
our own English acquire a correct Esperanto pronunciation almost without effort.      But
those of us who speak our English   by mere habit,  seldom tMaking of the separate sounds
out of which English is mads, often may slip into several pitfalls, even with so complete-
ly regular and simple a tongue as Esperanto.      In a series of little articles, one per
month, we plan to take up several of the inaccuracies which most often trouble the begin-
ners and which have to be corrected by the patient teacher.
For example, 2 ajld it are perfectly distinct sounds.    But those students who have been
drilled in French . sometimes pronounce both JJ and ĝ the way only 2 should be pronounced.
And students who don't know French    sometimes do the opposite, pronouncing both letters
like the dg in "budget."    The words "ajo" and "ago" are as distinct in sound as in sense.
One way to describe the difference is to remember that 2 *s tne "zh" sound in the
name for a Russian peasant,  "mouzhAki" that is, it is a buzzing sound,   (a «soft hiss, mixed
with voice,") and so it can be lengthened as much as one may wish,( just the same as the
voice may linger on the sounds of v, or jz, or a, or th.)          But the ĝ is an explosive
sound,  (beginning from a position of the tongue which shuts off the breath   as completely
as though it were a "d,")    and so it is impossible to lengthen it or dwell upon it, any
more than on the other stopped sounds,  such as        ŭ, b^ or p_.
The difference between 2 an(^ is (both of which have voice in them) is the exact counter-
part of the difference between the. corresponding voiceless letters, I and 8_, or that between
the sh in "mush" and the  ch in "maea."
Below in double column are a few English pairs, with the "j" sound illustrated at the
left, and the "ĝ« sound at the right.

AMERICAN   ASSOCIATION   FOR    INTENTIONAL    SCIENCE.
Through the spirited initiative of Prof. L.A.Ware (formerly of Montana, now of Io*a)
a new "faka organizo" has been launched under the above title, to act as American collab-
orator with "Lntemacia Scienea Asocio Esperantista." The I.S.A.E. until recently has
received too little attention in Usono; but through the active labors of its new American
delegito, Professor Ware, a list of 27 American names is now published, and the number is
growing from week to week.      Most of these have also qualified as active members of our own
Active membership in A.A.I.S. at $3.00 includes subsciption    to one magazine, accord-
ing to the member's choice, — either Scienea Qazeto, the popular-science all-Esperanto
bimonthly edited by S-ano Karl Froding at Rockford, 111., or the "Bulteno de I.s'.A.E."
published at Paris.      The remainder of each active membership fee will be devoted to the
worthy cause of forwarding the movement for a wider use of Esperanto as an aid in the field
of science.
A.A.I.S. has also undertaken to establish a circulating library of both technical
and popular-science books in Esperanto — available for the use of members who will person-
ally contribute $1.50 worth of such books for building up the library.      Eighteen volumes
already — a modest but encouraging beginning   upon which others may be expected to build.
The President of A.A.I.S. is Professor Archie J. Bahm, of Texas Technological College,
Lubbock, Tex,, and the General Secretary is Professor L.A.Ware, of 400 N. Clinton St.,
Iowa City, Iowa.
Sincere congratulations to this new and promising undertaking in the Esperanto field,
and to Its enterprising leaders!

premiojn en konkursoj sufiĉe gravaj. S-ro Verbree ne estas esperantisto; sed por pruvi, ke la
esperantististoj satas ke Esperanto ankaŭ jam disvastiĝas en la « ĉevala mondo », estus ne
senutile sendi al li salutkarton.
Dekstre supre la konata Cseh-instruisto Tiberio Morariu montras al vi per bastono la

A JOINT CELEBRATION of the Anniversary of Dr Zamenhof's Birthday was held
Pec. 16th in Hotel Gralvn. Boston, by the "Esperanto-Rondo Amika,,and the
Boston Esperanto Society,with the following program: Playlet, a talk on the
Life of Dr.Zamenhof, by Mr H.B.Hastings, Reading of Dr.Zamenhof's speech at
the 1910 Congress, History of Boston Esperanto Society by kiss (■:. J.Ivieriam.
Advantages of Cseh method of instruction, by Mrs. Aminet 'u' llah Oglesbv.
Sunday, Deo.19th the two groups were guests of Rabbi Harry Levi at the re-
gular morning services in Temple Israel. Rabbi Levi spoke feelingly about
Dr.Zamenhof and his life work. The services were broadcast over W N A C.
After a short introductory address, Rabbi Levi invited Mr. Hastings and Miss
Roan U.Orloff to speak over the radio. Mr Has tings spoke in English, and
Miss Orloff spoke in Esperanto, which was translated by Mr Hastings. Miss
Qrloff referred (for proof of her statement) to the Bible passage of Zephan-
lah III:9:. -"For then will I turn to the people a cure language, that they
may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent".

The Young Esperantost is
intended to provide a means
of uniting young North A-
mericans interested in nsp-
eranto, and to help swell
their ranks thru interest-
ing new recruits.
The editor requests every-
body to send material of Interest tc
young Esperantists, such as poems,
drawings (black), puzzles, all in
Esperanto, original or translated.
How about you young Esper-
antists offering your services as
representatives or agents to work
in such fields as peace, Stamps,
Catholic Youth, economico-politic-
al youth, etc.? circulars will be
supplied to youth who will be inter-
ested in mailing them out to their
correspondents and other friends.
Esperanto clubs in scout
troops, schools, churches, etc.,are
requested to send monthly reports
for our news column. And very good
use can be made of any addresses
of ypung Esperantists or other
youth who could make use of a kno
of Esperanto. Stamps for postage
will be gratefully accepted from
anyone anxious to help spread Lsper
anto among the youth of our lands.
The editor is interested

in Esperanto and it will be publish

lish, but C=TS, t=CH, G=J, J=Y,
Ŝ=SH, Ŭ=W used only with a,e: au,
eŭ.      H sounds like H down in the
throat, Ŝ  sounds like SB* in MEA-
SURE. R is trilled.
AEIOU sound like in AH, LET
lliEIR MACHINE GO MRU.
ACCENT means to say with force.
Nation is accented on the first
syllable; «A-» in Esperanto we
accent the NEXT TO LAST VOWEL
(aeiou), because each vowel is a
syllable There are no silent let-
ters in Esperanto.
