VORTOJ de  la PREZIDANTO;-  Dum miaj  vojaĝoj  tra multaj   landoj  de Etiropo mi  estis en
la mezo de organizaj problemoj.     En ciuj landoj la prezidantoj de la naciaj Esperan-
to^sooietoj,   kaj  de lokaj kluboj,   kaj  la komitatanoj  de  la Internacia Esperanto-Li go
(antaue  de UEA)  kaj  la membroj  de la Lingva Komitato deziris  konferenci  kaj  longe
diskuti pri  gravaj problemoj kun la "usona kolego".     Mi  trovis  cie  inter la gvidan-
toj kaj estroj grandan kaj  sinceran volon,   ke Esperanto sukcesu kaj progresu.       Nur
pri la metodoj ekzistas diversaj  opinioj.    Tamen mi  havas konvinkon,  ke ankau en tio
ni   baldaŭ sukoesos trovi  harmonian solvon.       Dume estas multa malespero inter kelkaj
Esperantistoj.       En sennombraj paroladoj dum kafo-kunvenoj post miaj publikaj  ofici-
alaj paroladoj,  mi  havis  la eblecon paroli  el mia koro al 30  --  100  — 300 gesamidea}
noj-sen traduko,   en multaj diverslandaj  urboj.       Mi   klopodis montri  al ili,  ke  ni
nepre  ne malesperu,       Ni   ne malesperu eo se,  pro la mallerteco de multaj Esperantis-
toj nia afero ne pli  bone sukcesis  ĝis  nun.       Ni  devas esti  konvinkitaj,  ke Esperan-
to estas bona afero kaj grava kultura movado,   absoluta neoesajo por la homaro    de
morgan".       La fakto ke Esperanto ankorau vivas,   spite  de  la Esperantistoj,  pruvas ke
nia lingvo estas bona afero kaj viv-kapabla.      Kaj car ni  havas la nruvon    ke nia
lingvo estas bona kaj  inda afero,  ni   ne  rajtas malesperi,   sed havas  la moralan devon
resti  fidelaj  al nia idealo.      Malesperos nur tiuj,   kiuj  gis  nun kredis  ke  ciu esper-;
antisto. devus  esti  modela homo,   speoo de pac-anĝelo.       En preskati ciu hejmo oni  hav-
as  de  tempo al tempo familiajn batalojn.       La 20»jara homo,   kiam li   lernas  Esperan-
ton,   jam akiris multajn bonajn kaj malbonajn kutimojn.       Se dum la 20 unuaj jaroj de
sia vivo li  nenion audis pri pac-ideoj  kaj  ne praktikis pacemon,   li  ne novas,   subite
esti pao-anŝelo nur pro tio ke li  lernis nian netftralan lingvon.       Ni   ne rajtas tion
postuli.       Se  ni   esperas,  ke simpla homo,   kiu lernis Esperanton,   subite  ankau estu
anĝelo-----ni nostulas tro multe de la homaro!11       Ni   estu kontentaj,   se biu Esperan-*
tisto havas  la sinceran volon esti pli paoema homo,   e"8  se  li   ne tre bone sukoesas  en
siajklopodoj.       Se  dum la dattro de 2  - 3 generacioj,   ciu Esperantisto havas bonan

SHALL AMERICA HAVE A
'PLAN   FOR  THEM?
Fifty years ago this date, Dr. L. L. Zamenhof had already perfected his epoch-
making idea, but was looking in vain for a publisher.  A few months later, or in
July, aided by the noble appreciation and self sacrifice of his fiancee, Clara
Silbernik, he gave his work to the world in print.  There were then in the world no
Esperantists except a part of the Zamenhof family.
And today?
Millions who have approved the idea and dabbled in the study enough to read
public notices and advertisements. Scores of thousands who are using Esperanto in
more serious ways. Thousands who are making it a major concern of their lives. A
literature which any small nation could be proud of, -- with its hundreds of major
books, its thousands of booklets, tracts, and circulars, its four or five score of
current periodicals.
Yet those who expected Esperanto within less than its first half century to
batter down all obstacles and win universal acceptance have not seen their hopes ful-
filled.  And those who thus anticipated too easy a victory have sometimes lost their
faith and forgotten their early zeal. Now every one who may have grown faint heart-
ed because too flowery hopes have been disappointed should realize that'while a new
material invention (motion pictures, radio,) may take the world by storm, it is the
way of a new spiritual idea to win its growth more slowly, like a field of flowers
eventually spreading from a single original seed.  And to a great extent Esperanto
is a spiritual idea, although supported also by its practical utility for those who
are progressive enough to use it.
But after all due allowances for the difficulties and for the nature of the
problem, we must admit that in our twin countries of English speaking North America
the movement has not been making the record of general progress that it ought to
have made.  We have lagged a great ways behind the pace which the Esperantists of
many other countries have set for us.
Not only have the countries of polyglot Europe shown more interest and planted
their seeds more successfully, but China and Japan in the orient have made a pro-
gress that we cannot display; and Brazil, our great neighbor to the south, is start-
ing to put us to shame.  The national, government of Brazil is awake to the import-
ance of this new thing that is softening the barriers between nations; so that when
the ninth Brazilian congress of Esperantists was held last November, all government
railways gave half fare to the delegates.  And free telegraph facilities were afford-j
ed to the committee of arrangements. Not to mention the beautiful postage stamp
struck in honor of the Esperanto Congress.
But we in our "Usono" shall not always lag behind in this procession,
shall we? -- Let our answer be a "Noi"
Or
And so is it not time for us in our country to take stock of our resources, to
assess our special difficulties, and to set in order our plans for finding our way
through them to a new measure of success?
For surely there are solid grounds for feeling an inward encouragement just
now.  in thirty years EaMa has never failed to hold its annual congress -- not even
in the war time.  The congresses of the past several years have shown a steady cre-
scendo in numbers and enthusiasm.  The incubus of a heavy debt, which year after
year throughout the depression paralyzed active hopes, has at last been lifted
through the team work of a final strong pull together.  A nucleus of devoted members

has  been  located who  are  not  afraid  to work hard.     Our president will  soon return
from  Europe,   full   of  new  ideas  gathered  from  the  way   things  are  done  in  other   lauds.;
And  next  Autumn  the   enthusiastic  daughter  of  Zamenhof himself  will  begin  a sojourn
in   our   country,   ready   to  gather   and  teach  classes   of  beginners  by   that  conversation-
al method which  has been so  successful  in  Europe.
So  shall  not   this year  be  a year  when many  minds  will   turn  to  the vital   ques-
tions   of what has  retarded progress in  the  past,   and what  will  assure in  the  future
an  era  of  stable progress?    Here,   then,   is a question box of  things   to  think over
in  the  season  of  self-searching,   before we  enter  the  campaign  of  the next year    and
years.
Will  the average American bother  to learn Esperanto unless he can see in it  an
immediate  use  for  himself?
If not,   then what  uses  of Esperanto  are possible  for   the  average American,   who
stays  at home instead  of  traveling abroad?    what uses  will seem important  to him
and retain his  enduring  interest?    Will  it  be  the  spoken  language,   (listening  to
inter-national broadcasts  on  short wave radio?)    Will  it  be  the reading  of a worth-
while  literature,   (books   originally written in Esperanto?)    Will it be  the reading
of gems  from national  literatures  never yet  translated into English,   (anthologies
of  national  literatures,   —  Swedish,  Japanese,   Slavic,   or as   the  case may be?)
Will it be  the reading  of magazines  and papers  printed in distant   lands  and reveal-
ing  their  local  atmosphere?
Will it be  found in  the urge  of  one's  interest  in some  special   "ism"?    (Be it
international  science,  vegetarianism,   socialism,  work for  the  blind,  boy-scoutistry,
or  any  of  several religious  faiths which  have international periodicals  in Esper-
anto?)
Or will it be,   perhaps,   the  chance  for personal  correspondence with  samideanoj
in  distant  countries  who reciprocally  are   "correspondentially  inclined"?
Or yet again, will it be the mental discipline from the study itself -- the
valuable light which the study of a simple and logical language throws back upon
our  un-simple  and none  too  logical  English mother  tongue?
And  there  are  other  questions.     Will  the best results  flow from a noisy public-:
ity  and  the mushroom  growth recruited  from  those who start  through  curiosity?    How
many  of  such will   "stick"?  -- 'Will best  growth  come  from  emphasizing more  and more
the   "internal  idea"   of brotherhood in heart  through  brotherhood in speech?    (Learn-
ing  the  language  first from a sense  of duty and  learning  to  love it  later?)  ~-  Or
will it  come from  emphasizing more the practical sides  of Esperanto?    (Hoping  that
the ideal  side will gradually  slip into hearts  unawares?)
And how best  to  deepen and make permanent  the interest  of  those  already inter-
ested? -- Would it be a good plan for LMa  to  organize  a  circulating  library,   going
through  the mails   to readers in succession?  --  Would it be a good  thing for EAMA to
organize  a special  circle who will  start  together  to qualify  themselves  further  by
extensive reading  of Esperanto Literature?    (Say  a badge  with  one  star when the
member has read his  first  100 pages,   a second  star  when he has  read  500 pages,   a
third when he has  reached 1500,   fourth when he has read 3000,   fifth upon reaching
his  5000 pages?)-

Or  would it be  fantastic  to  start  groups  of  ten samideanoj  who  will keep  a
chain  letter in circulation  -- five samideanoj  in  our  domestic area and five in some
one foreign country?    (of the  suggesting of many  ideas  there is no  end;    But which
of them will  work -- in U.S.A.   conditions?)
So  in  summing it  up  --  What  sort  of  an  idea would  it  be  for  every serious mind-
ed reader  of  Amerika Esperantisto  to  think  earnestly  over   these  questions  --  and
kindred questions which his   own mind will  suggest?    How would it be  for  the  thinker
and  planner   to write  out  his   thoughts  and   send them  --   to  somebody?    To  somebody who
will reply,   and will help  to sift  the  chaff from  the wheat?    How would it  be for him
to come  to  the Jubilea Kongreso,  next July 1-3, and bring his  ideas  with him?    (But
don' t  come with  grandiose and impractical schemes   of work for   "somebody  else"  to do;
come  rather  with  consecration  and resolution  for  the actual plodding work which you
yourself  are  prepared  to do.)
At   any rate,  here  is   the  question,   the  question with  which we  started.     And
only  "we"   (la novmonda Fsperantistaro)  can  answer  it.     "Better days  for America's
share  in  the Esperanto movement,   --  shall we have  a plan  for  them?"     And  are we  our-
selves  ready  to work and sacrifice  for  them?

NEWS    OF    GREAT    IMPORTANCE --    Libia    ZMMHQF    TO    WORK    IN    AMERICA. '   The  three
children  of Dr.   Zamenhof  are all  expert  Esperantists.     But   only  one  is  devoting the
whole  energy  of her  life  to promoting  the Esperanto  cause.     This  is  Lidia,  the young-
er  daughter,   who beside being  a well known  author  and  translator,  has  for years been
teaching classes  with  great  success by the conversational  "Cseh" method in several
European countries.    Miss Zamenhof is a disciple of the Bahai religion,   which speci-
ally  emphasizes  human brotherhood -- and Esperanto as  a means  toward brotherhood.
And she has recently accepted an invitation  to come to Amerioa under the auspices  of
the Spiritual Assembly  of Bahaists  of the U.   S.   A.   and Canada,     Her  arrival is  ex-
pected  to  occur next September,     The teaching of Esperanto,  both  to beginners by the
"Ce-metodo"  and to advanced students  by a method  of her  own,  will be her  chief  act-
ivity while here.     Every  lover   of Esperanto  and of  the Esperanto ideal will rejoice
at this news.     EANA will  cooperate in  every way,  in  the matter  of publicity and in
facilitating  the  arrangements  for  the most  practicable itinerary.     Further  and more
detailed notices must wait until the  time of her  coming is a little  closer at hand.

BRAZIL LEADS THE WAY.     The Heroldo de  Esperanto for  Feb.   21 reproduces  photograph-
ically  an  envelope  that  carried a recent   letter from Rio de Janeiro  to the Nether-
lands.     On the  envelope  are  seen  (beside  one  ordinary Brazilian stamp)  four  exhibits
of interest  to all Esperantists,  as  showing  the  official  appreciation  of the  "good
idea"   on the  part   of  the  greatest nation  of  the  Southern Hemisphere.     We  see  the
1935 blue postage stamp in honor of the  eighth  "specimena foiro,"  -- text in Port-
uguese  and Esperanto.     Then  there  is  the   1936 red  stamp  in honor  of  the  ninth  ex-
position  of samples,   --  also text  in  the  two  languages.     Third,  is  the  official
cancellation mark  of  the   193o  fair,   —  once more with  Esperanto  text   alongside the
text  in the national  tongue.
But  the  fourth  and  last  exhibit is  for  Esperantists  the  most  significant.     That  is
the  square green postage  stamp issued in  direct recognition  of  the ninth  Brazilian
congress   of Esperantists.     In  the   center  are  grouped the flags  of many nations.   And
the Portuguese  or. national  tongue  does not  appear  except  one word in  each  of  the
four  corners.     In a circle completely surrounding the flags   the reading runs:   "Natia
Brazila Kongreso de Esperanto.     Nov.   1936.     Rib de Janeiro. "

Those  students   of Esperanto who take the  trouble  to compete  for
and win an official  certification of their progress  in the form
of  an examination  diploma  are  serving  net  merely their  own plea-
sure,   but the  general welfare   of the morement,   by giving  it more
form and  solidity.        So let  us  now call   renewed  attention to the
various   examination facilities   open to American lovers   of the
language.
First,  EANA maintains  a competent Examination Committee,   in the
person of Professor Edwin L.  Clarke,   Rollins College,  Winter
Park,   Fla.       Three forms   of  examinations   are thus provided.
(A)     For the  "Atesto pri  Lernado,"   attainable by those with a moderate  degree  of
accurate knowledge,   who have  not yet   attained an  advanced  stage   of proficiency.
(Examination fee $2.00)     Two ladies  in Washington,   D,   C.  have just been added to
the  number passing this  examination,   — Mrs.  Lula Smith,   and Mrs.  Maud  Sawyer
Taylor,  both  "kun honoro".
(B)     For the  "Atesto pri  Kapableoo",   there is  a more  rigid  and advanoed examination.

(C)     For the  "Atesto pri Instruado"  the test is  an oral  and class-demonstration
examination designed to prove efficiency as a teacher  of Esperanto.     (Fee,   $3.50)
But besides  the three  above,   sponsored by the Esperanto    Association of  North America,1
there is  another  and still more  advanoed examination now open for those who wish to
avail  themselves  of the privilege.       This  is the examination for the Diploma of the
American Esperanto Academy,   given by a committee  of that independent body of Esperan-
to scholars  styled the  "Amerika Esperanto-Akademio."     (Mr.  Ernest G.   Dodge  of Wash-
ington city has  just  successfully passed this  examination),       Two quite comprehensive
h;rd*t&3ol examinations  are given by two members  of the Ekzamena Komitato,  while  an oral
examina»i^jn is  given by the third member  of  the  committee,   —  or,  when necessary,   by
seme  exper»; Esperantist  authorized to  act pro tempore  in place  of  a  oommittee member,
(The fee fo£ this  examination amounts  to $4.00)     Only those who have  already won the
"Atesto xjcri  Kapableoo"   of EANA,   or its  equivalent in a foreign diploma,  will be ad-
mitted -J^ the Academy examination.
Ambition's  students who may be interested should apply to the President  of the Amer-
ican Esperanto Academy,  Prof.  A.   Kengott,   University of Texas,  Austin,  Texas.
Other  Services  of  The Academy.       The American Esperanto Academy also maintains  two
other committees,  whose services will be found invaluable to those aspiring to Esper-
anto authorship.     These  are  the  "Aproba Komitato",  which will  give  the Academy's   seal
of   approval to meritorious compositions;   and the  "Kritika Komitato",  which offers
criticisms  and corrections  relative to manuscripts  submitted.     For details,   see the
January and February,   1936,   issues  of  Amerika Esperantisto,     Or write  direot to Prof.
Kengott.
EVERY ESPERANTIST should read the works  of Dr.   Zamenhof  - STANDARD for STYLE.

heard  of Esperanto) will want to see Postage Stamps  to commemorate the 30 year Jubilee
of Esperanto.     Other Governments have  - notably Brazil  - why not  Uncle Sam?

ideano Ernesto Farkas,     of how his  experiences in Scout Jamborees  changed him from an
unbeliever in Esperanto to an ENTHUSIASTIC ESPERANTIST.     He  now thinks  a Scout not
knowing Esperanto is  "A bell without  a hammer"   or  "A river without water".

IN TEXAS..     The world stands  aghast  at the news   of the terrible  catastrophe    with
its great loss  of life,   in the New London School.    We have not heard of any loss  in :
our Esperanto family-and most  earnestly hope that we will  not.
ESPERANTISTS  ARE ALL AGOG over the prospective  Esperanto Association of Texas.     Or-
ganization was   scheduled for March 2?th in YMCA at  San Antonio.     Over 50 Texan Es-
perantists were  invited to attend.     Rev.   John H.   Fazel,  William Plampin and John K.
Halter were the busiest folks  in Texas-preparing.
AN ESPERANTO CLASS is being taught by Mrs.   Glen W.   Stinnet,   every  Saturday 7:30 P.M.'
in Bryan.                Miss  Philippa Stoneham of Bryan has  secured the  signatures  of near-
ly all the inhabitants  of that  section of Texas,   as "Friends  of Esperanto".     Also has:
all her  friends writing for a U.S.A.-Esperanto postage  stamp.

MR.   ROBERT COLQUHOUN,   Fort Bragg,   Calif.,   has  just  delighted the Central   Office with
news  of his whereabouts,   in a letter,   calling attention to his  activities  in Boy
Scoutry-with a list  of  over a  score,   wanting  information about  Esperanto,   the  Nation-
al  Boy  Scout Jamboree  in Washington,   and the  International  in Holland.     Mr.  C.
was   a Scottish delegate to the Third  Universal  Esperanto Congress   in Cambridge,   Eng-
land,   1907.     Been an American since  1911-President  of the  11th International  Esper- :
anto Congress  at  San Francisco 1915-     How we delight  in hearing from these FERV0RUL0J
of the early days   of NIA AFERO.     We  need them all back again with  us  to help  guide
the good ship "ESPERANTO".
