CLEVELAND, Ohio: The Cleveland Esperanto
Society staged on May 8th a well-attended
World Friendship Program at the Y.M.C.A.
Auditorium. A feature of the rally was an
Esperanto Pageant and playlet by Ellen A.
Fanner with lines in Esperanto; Polish,
German and other languages. Alan H. Selker
addressed the gathering in Esperanto. Dr.
Frank Tomich, who presided, is Professor
of Languages at Fenn College, where he
conducts one of the many large classes
held in this city.
STAMP-COLLECTING AND ESPERANTO: The Uni-
versale Esperanto-Asocio delegate, S-ro
Hugo Gerisch of Picton, Ontario, has
successfully used the very great interest
in stamp-collecting as a fine instrument
of propaganda for Esperanto. He has writ-
ten, and the Picton papers have published,
many fine articles linking Esperanto with
stamp-collecting. Especially readable is
one article called "To Whom Does Esperan-
to Belong?" in which he includes a letter
from Hidejiro Nagata, Lord Mayor of Tokio.
"In our country," writes the Mayor, "even
communists use Esperanto. Nov/, men would
feel angered if you called them thieves
just because burglars use them too. The
flashlight is a convenient means of light-
ing to everyone.  It is not necessary to
throw away a convenient tool if other
people are using it for a wrong purpose."
The Picton Gazette of February 22 prints
a paper read by S-ro Gerisch to the local
Stamp Club. The paper is full of fascinat-
ing facts about stamps and we regret space
here does not permit a reprint. Towards
the end of his paper S-ro Gerisch recom-
mends joining the Esperanto Association
with members in all parts of the world.
Corresponding with these members brings
you at least the common stamps of every
country and builds up valuable friendships.
S-ro Gerisch has been on the staff of the
Germana Esperanto Asocio since 1911. You
will enjoy meeting him at the Toronto
Congress where he will be representing the
G.E.A. He recommends the boarding house of

Nin intelektuloj, precipe interesas la
kultura kaj soci-eduka disvolvi'fo de rusa
respubliko, la granda lando kun 170 mil-
iona loĝantaro. Dum lastaj jaroj estis
multaj rezultaj, atingataj je Ĝi-tiu tempo,
Granda celo estis por registaro; la lik-
vido de nealfabeteco kaj plilarf'igo de
plena popola klerigado. Post la renverso
de la cara registaro en Rusio restis nur
32% de klerigita popolo. Dum 10 jaroj
dank' al popola komisario de klerigado la
nombro pligrandigis je granda procento;
kaj hodiaŭ en USSR estas 90% de klerigita
lofantaro. Oni devas rimarki ke kial 'en
urboj ci-nombro saltas 'gis 97%, en vila|oj
oni ne regresas; tie troviĝas 88%, Dua
grava pas'o de 1'registaro post likvido de
analfabeteco--la deviga komenca lernejo
por infanaro de 8-a jaraĝo. Nuntempe en
lernejoj troviĝas cirkau 19,000,000 geler-
nantoj komparinde kun 1914 jaro, kiam
estis nur 7,800,000. Tio donas kreskon
preskau trioblan. Tiamaniere hodiau 98%
de tuta infana logantaro trovigas inter la
muroj de lernejoj. La sekvanta tasko-
evoluo de fakuloj inter la muroj de mezaj
kaj superaj lernejoj. En 1930 en superaj
lernejoj troviĝis 272,000 studentoj, en
1933 - 415,000. En lernejoj por gelaboris-
taro kaj vilaĝanaro de komenca etupo por
maturuloj, trovigis en 1930 - 15,000, en
1933 - 326,000 personoj, kaj ciutage la
nombro de lernantoj kreskas. En Uzbekistan,
anstatau 3 superaj lernejoj en 1920, nun-
tempe troviĝas 22 institutoj kaj tekniku-
moj. La instruo, krom ordinaraj scioj, kiel
de matematiko, fiziko k. al., enhavas ek-
sterlandajn lingvojn nepre uzatajen mezaj
kaj superaj lernejoj. Precipe oni ŝatas la
germanan kaj anglan lingvojn, car ili ambau
estas larg'e uzataj en popola industrio,
mekaniko kaj malinigo de la lando. ESPERAN-
TO, ankaŭ ne postrestas; en multaj lernejoj
gi estas ofte instruuta, kiel fakultativa
eksterlanda linevo.

MORS PROGRESS IN BRAZIL:- «ELO FRATERNAL"
a nexv magazine, chiefly in Portuguese, has
been started at Bahia, Brazil, in the
interests of pacificsm and world friend-
ship. The second issue is dedicated to
"The Esperantists," and contains some
articles both on and in "nia lingvo." A
loose enclosed slip contains ten slogans
in Esperanto, in perforate form, suitable
for pasting on the reverse of envelopes.
For instance: "Estas devo de tuta homaro
eviti la millton," "La homa juĝistaro
estas maljusta kondamnante la mortiganton,
kaj nepunante la respondajn pri la milito."
"La hodiaua homaro estas ankoraŭ* sovagYa,
car ĝi ne forigis la militon."
EXCHANGE PROBLEM:- A member writes that
when he was living in Texas he was told
that for a time, after our resumption of
specie payments in 1879, the Mexican and
American dollars were exchangeable at par,
but after a few months each country dis-
counted that of the other by a small
margin.
This resulted in the opening of new
opportunities to amateur speculators. One
such went into a saloon in El Paso, called
for a glass of beer and laid down a silver
dollar. He was served and given a Mexican
dollar as change. Ho then took his way
across the International Bridge into Mex-
ico, entered a saloon and called for a
drink, laying down the Mexican dollar. In
addition to the drink he -was given an
American dollar as change. Until his legs
protested he kept this process going all
day, winding up with the same dollar with
vfaioh  he started the day plus the usual
consequences of such indulgence. Whether
our present dollar will depreciate so much
that this performance can be repeated is a
groblem_for the future._______

ESPERANTO "STYLE"
Between the work of a fascinating writer
and one whose pages are dull and heavy
there is a vastly important difference call-
ed style. But the resources at hand for
building an excellent style are not the
same in all languages.
In English the leading resource for the
stylist is found in our enormous vocabulary,
providing many delicate discriminations of
meaning, and synonyms which differ in sound
and rhythm or in literary associations. A
second resource is the terseness of English
monosyllables, rendering easy such cumula-
tive phrases as "kith and kin,"'or"a great
big blunder."
In Esperanto, on the contrary, the stock
of root words is relatively small. Yet the
skillful writer has at hand a resource all
his own, the building up at his pleasure
of agglutinative compounds and derivative
words, rich in meaning. To put it other-
wise, English words are all shop style,
"ready made," while Esperanto words may
have the artistic touch of being "made to
order."
There is one resource for varying the
style which is common to the two languages,
a choice among varied verbal expressions.
As, "he has seen," "he saw," "he did see,"
or skribig'is, oni skribis, estas skribita.
An additional resource in Esperanto is
the extremely free and flexible order of
the words.
Esperanto has never claimed to be thel
full literary equivalent of the richest
national languages. Yet perhaps it has been

shows that "Forty hours of teaching and
practice will equip a pupil in Grade 7 to
understand and use Esperanto as well as
200 hours will equip him in French or
German...the achievement in the synthetic
language will probably be from five to fif-
teen times that in a natural language".
