October, 1921. No. 6. THE COROLLARY TO DISARMAMENT—DO YOUR PART When the world's representatives meet in Washington the ma- jority of the world's people will be hoping and praying that the ef- fort succeed, despite the almost deprecatory attitude of the leading participants. These leaders, having risen to political power as cham- pions of a party, a section, or at widest a single nation, cannot easily give up the offensive and defensive attitude towards others; have not learned to think in world terms. The people's will must effect a satisfactory agreement if there is to be one. There is no way in which we, the people, can shift the responsibility and work upon a few representatives. If we want disarmament and peace it is up to us to get it. There is only one way to get disarmament, by one and all demand- ing it. It is absolutely necessary that in the different nations we get together and demand that, our own leaders lead—for example, that we Usonans demand that the United States make concessions with or before the others, in order to obtain world accord. The League of Nations, Sept. 15, decided to place the question of public school Esperanto instruction upon the order of the day for the coming session of 1922 and asked the secretariat to prepare there- for a full report. —From Esperanto. Digitized by Google 2 AMERIKA ESPERANTISTO Are the individual members of the peoples all over the world ready to give in to others ? Alas! they have not even learned to un- derstand one another. Without that not even the utmost agreement would be better than "a scrap of paper." There is but one guarantee —a means of assimilation of ideas and ideals, one common standard for every individual on earth. We Esperantists have not all that the world needs, but we have that essential, a common standard—a com- mon meeting ground of all that is psychical in mankind. One cow- ardly man may tell another ignorant man that the X race is plotting, deceitful, dangerous, to be feared and armed against; the Esperan- tist can stand up and say, "It is a lie and I can prove it." And he can, for he can know the X race, know their thoughts, know their very hearts, thru the mediumship of a direct common tongue, Esperanto. But even Esperanto cannot be obtained without effort, and unless the world's individuals are willing to make the effort to link them- selves together—not by force, but by mutual understanding—the greatest possible result of the Washington congress will be but a Tower of Babel; a scrap of paper. Make that effort now! —Prujno. ANGLA LINGVO SEN PROFESORO Ne komedio sed tragi-fakto ...."Ni devas konstati ke nuntempe la angla lingvo estas pli facile ellernebla"... . (ol Esperanto).—/Vfbrismo
