THE FRENCH ACADEMY OF SCIENCE SPEAKS
"The undersigned, members of the Academy of Sciences,
convinced that the adoption of the auxiliary language Esperanto
in international relations would have far-reaching consequences in
the way of the progress of the sciences and their applications; that
it would permit the diffusion of French Science abroad, and hence
diffuse the intellectual influence of our land,
are resolved:
1.    that the teaching of this tongue, a masterpiece of logic and
simplicity, should be introduced, at least as an optional study, in the
official program of scientific classes in all teaching establishments;
2.     that, in international Congresses, it should be adopted as an of-
ficial language on an equality with the national languages, up to the
time that experience shall confirm its fitness to become the sole of-
ficial language;
3.     that the attention of directors of scientific and technical
publishing houses be called to the value that the use of this language
would present for them, in their publications destined for the outside
world;
4.     that, from now on, the leaders of thought and scientists should
prepare themselves for its use in their relations with their foreign
colleagues, and inform them when they are ready to so use it;
5.    that a committee be appointed to get together and elaborate
vocabularies for the sciences purely in Esperanto, and that the tech-

nical societies be invited  to do  likewise within  the  lines  of  their
specialties."

UTILA UZADO DE ESPERANTO VOJAĜANTE
En tiu ĉi epoko estas eble travojaĝi la mondon uzante nur es-
peranton; sed tion fari, estas necese sin antaŭprepari per la akiro de
la adresoj de esperantistoj kiuj loĝas en la landoj vizitotaj. Unufoje
konatiĝinta al la samideanoj  al vojaĝanto malaperas ĉiaj  malfacil-
aĵoj-                     .                           ...                  ...
Kvankam mi efektive ne faris tion ĉi, tamen miaj spertoj en
fremdolandoj rilate esperanton, jam certigis al mi la eblecon tiel fari.
Dum la jaro 1919 mi min trovis en Siberujo, kiel ano de la brita
misio al tiu lando.
Antaŭ ol forveturi de Anglujo, mi havigis la nomojn de kelkaj
esperantistoj en Siberujo de la U. E. A.
Alveninte en Ĥarbino, Manĝu[r]ujo, mi veturis vagonare tra Si-
berujo en Eŭropan Rusujon ĝis la punkto de la maksimuma antaŭ-
eniro de la Armeoj de Kolĉak. Poste mi revenis Omskon, kie mi
vizitis la sekretarion de la Esperantista Societo, S-ro Kolĉin. Kvan-
kam mi neniam antaŭe parolis esperante mi trovis nenian malfacil-
ajon kompreni aŭ kompreniĝi.
Reveninte Ĥarbinon, mi vizitis la Prezidanton de la tiea Societo
kaj ni interparolis longatempe.
Poste mi loĝadis en Vladivostok© ĉirkaŭ unu monaton kaj mi
senprokraste interrilatiĝis kun la esperantistoj en tiu urbo. S-ro
Vetoŝinski kaj aliaj min ricevis per brakoj malfermitaj kaj aranĝis,
ke mi renkontu aliajn samideanojn. Mi vespermangis kun ili, kaj ni
libere interparolis dum tri horoj pri diversaj temoj sen malfacilajoj.
Ci tiu estis nur mia kvara provo. Ankaŭ per esperanto kaj la bon-
vola konsento de miaj esperantistaj amikoj, mi ricevis raportojn pri
la fervoja tiama striko, kiuj estis utilaj; ruse tio tute ne estus ebla.
Ciu el ili min traktis kiel fraton, pruvante, ke la internacia lingvo estas
vera ilo de frateco.
Poste mi iris al Ĥabarovsko sur la Amuro, kiu urbo estis antaŭe
la registara sidejo por orienta Siberujo.
Mi tie renkontis kun Generalo Savitski, kosaka. Li estas tre
fervora esperantisto kaj tre interesa. Li portis medalon, kiun li ri-
cevis, kiel honorajon pro siaj servoj al la afero, priparolinte kaj klari-
ginte la internacian lingvon al la Caro de Rusujo. Tiun ĉi medalon
la Petrogradaj esperantistoj donacis al li.
Vizito mia al la militkaptita tendaro okazigis la varbadon de
ĉirkaŭ 100 aliaj al la tendara esp. rondo. Ne de ia peno mia, sed sim-
ple car ili tiam komprenis ke per esperanto, brita oficiro, kiu tute ne
sciis la hungaran lingvon, povis interparoli libere kun la hungaraj
oficiroj en tiu tendaro, kiuj estis ankaŭ esperantistoj.
Tiam mi veturis vaporŝipe kontraŭflue la Amuron ĝis Blagoveŝ-
ĉensko. Tie mi renkontis S-ron Pargaĉevski, jurnalisto, kiu inter-
vjuis min esperante kaj publikigis la intervjuon ruse en la loka ga-
zeto.
Nu! je finiĝo de mia vizito al Siberujo mi nur komencis paroli
kaj kompreni la rusan lingvon kaj do nur neperfekte.
Mi opinias tial, ke eble post jaroj de loĝado en tiu lando povas
eksterlandano esperi akiri eĉ mezbonan sciadon de la lingvo, sed, nur

mallonga studado de la internacia lingvo necesas por povi kompreni
kaj kompreniĝi.
Mi nun ne timas vojaĝi al kiu ajn lando se mi scius ke mi povus
renkonti kun esperantistoj. Ekrigardo je la jarlibro de la U. E. A.
sufiĉe montras, ke restas nur malmultaj landoj, kie oni ne povus in-
terrilatiĝi kun samideanoj.

ABSURDA BOJKOTO
Estas konata trajto de nia homa naturo, ke se iu grave ofendis
nin en unu rilato, ni tuj inklinas kondamni lin pri ĉio, kion li faris,
faras kaj faros, eĉ bonegan. Tiamaniere ni malutilas ofte ne la kontraŭ
ni pekintan, sed nin mem, forrifuzante aferon, kiu tre servis nin en
antaŭa tempo, kaj nur havas la malfeliĉon esti kreita de la homo mala-
probata.
Antaŭ ne multaj monatoj la Esperantistaro posedis inter si ĉie
uzatan kaj oportunan monsistemon, kiu ebligis, ke oni ekkonu je 1'
unua rigardo le precizan orvaloron de ĉiu citita prezo el kiu ajn lando.
La bazunuo estis sufiĉe malgranda, por ke oni povu per la sistemo
traduki sen sentebla perdo aŭ troigo ĉiujn monerojn de la tuta mondo.
La terminojn de la sistemo oni enkorpigis en ĉiun Esperanto-nacian
vortaron. Per flugfolioj kaj aliaj propagandiloj oni laŭdkantis kaj
reklamis la elpenson eĉ por ne-Esperantistoj. Nia Majstro honoris
la sistemon per ties eksklusiva uzado en sia klasika Marta.
Kio nun fariĝis la spesmiloj ? Hi malaperis de la abonprezkolonoj
de gravaj Esperantaj gazetoj. Oni plu ne trovas ilin apud la naci-
monaj ciferoj en librolistoj kaj katalogoj. Redaktoroj kaj eldonistoj
akcentas la diferencon inter svisaj frankoj kaj francaj frankoj, inter
markoj kaj krejceroj. Kaj pro la gravaj kursoŝanĝoj de la postmilita
mondo oni troviĝas jam en vera haoso pri l'efektivaj valoroj de la
diversaj naciaj monoj. Dume per la spesa sistemo oni povus ĉiam
traduki la siatempe precizan sencon de ĉiu monero de ĉiu lando, tute
same kiel oni faris antaŭe.
Ni demandas nin, kial en pasinta tempo, kiam la monoj estis re-
lative senŝanĝaj oni uzadis la spesan sistemon, sed nun, kiam pro la
fluemeco de I'internacia financo tiu sistemo estus duoble utila, donante
al tutmonda vido ĉiam ĝustan esprimon de la variemaj valoroj, oni
la iam laŭdegitan rimedon preskaŭ subite jam forjetis*? Nur unu
klarigon de tiu stranga fenomeno ni povas konjekti: tion, ke la aŭtoro
de la spesa sistemo freŝdate pekis kontraŭ la lingvo Esperanto. Tiun
pekon ni egale kun ĉiuj fideluloj kondamnegis kaj kondamnegados.
Sed de tio ne sekvas, ke ni devas malbontrovi nun ĉion ajn, kion
Prof, de Saussure faris en la tuta vivo, kaj por puni lin devas senigi
nin je elpensajo, kiun ni uzis jam de jaroj kun plej granda utilo al ni
mem.

La nuna kvazaŭ-bojkoto de la spesa sistemo ŝajnas al ni sencela
kaj absurda, kaj almenaŭ ĝis kiam iu elpensos internacian montraduk-
sistemon pli praktikan, n,i uzados kaj propagandos ĝin kiel ĉiam.

Kontraŭ la Eraro pri Lutero en la Aprila Kajero.
La skribanto rakontas kelkajn erarojn malnovajn, kiujn diu lu-
terano scias kvazaŭ eraroj kaj kiujn mi estas preta por rifuti mult-
foje el skriboj de Lutero mem, se necese. Lutero ja starigis la Bib-
lion kiel solan religian aŭtoritaton, sed li ankaŭ doktrinis ke la Biblio
estas mem-interpretanta. Religio estas afl la afero de la individuo,
kiu por ĝi estas respondeca nur al Dio, ne la afero de la civila estraro
aŭ la papo ktp. Precize tion li asertis Aprilon 17an kaj 18an je Worms
(Vorms) 1521 (kiel la unua!) antaŭ la imperiestro kaj papaj ambasa-
doroj dum la germana parlamento. Sed li ankaŭ doktrinis, ke neniu
devas prediki aŭ instrui en la eklezio sen eklezia komisio, kaj ke la
eklezio estas la juĝisto ĉu lia doktrino estu laŭbiblia aŭ ne. Mem-
kompreneble ne estis partianoj sed kontraŭuloj de Lutero kiuj ne kon-
sentis resti tiel, sed interpretis la biblion por si mem. Li konservie
nur tiujn ceremoniojn kiujn li rigardis ne-kontraŭbibliaj. Li aprobis
multajn plendojn de la kamparanoj sed li ne aprobis ilian revolucion
kun bruligo, rabado kaj budado, sed konsilis ke oni pace interkonsentu
kaj admonis ke la estraroj plibonigu la staton de la kamparanoj. Kiam
la estraroj subigis la revolucion, kiun li kondmnis, li ankaŭ publike
kondamnis la severajn venĝojn de la estro kaj nobeluloj, sed tie oni
ne aŭdis lin. Li ne permesis korpajn punojn kontraŭ herezuloj sed nur
eksigo de ili el la eklezio kaj kontraŭstaris eklezian enmikson en poli-
kaj aferoj sammaniere ol estraran enmikson en religiaj aferoj. Tie di
li estis tre diference de Zvingli kaj Kalvin aŭ la amerikaj pilgrimpa-

Sciencistoj en la XHIa Kongreso
Estas bezone, ke la sciencistoj-esperantistoj havu post longa tem-
po denove okazon pridiskuti gravajn temojn, kiuj interesas esperant-
ismon egale grave kiel la sciencon. La XHIa kongreso estos okazo
por tio. Oni certe bone scias, ke la scienca progreso ne efektiviĝas
dum sciencistaj kunvenoj, sed oni egale certe scias, ke oni multon pro-

fitas aŭskultante saĝajn raportojn pri la akiritaj sukcesoj kaj medit-
ante dum la diskutado, kio nun estas farota kaj antigota. Tre grava,
ĝojiga, kaj instruema ĝuo estas en la dumkongresa kunveno aŭskulti
raportojn pri la ĝis nun atingitaj rezultatoj en la esperanta faka sci-
enca terminologio, kiujn prelegos fakuloj de koncernaj sciencoj. Mi
organizos tiajn raportojn laŭ ĉiuj sciencoj kaj petas sinjorojn kolegojn
pri afabla sciigo, pri kia scienca terminologio ili estus pretaj raporti
(mi mem faros raporton pri la hemio). La raportoj eldonitaj poste en
libro estos certe instrua lingva verko de esperanto.

La Konsilantaro de la Internacia Universitato kunvenis en Bru-
selo al 24an kaj 25an de marto. Gi notis komunikajojn senditaj de
la universitatoj en Zurich, Lisboa, Praha, Bristol, Kjobenhavn, Lei-
den, Liverpool, Tokio, Cambridge, Warzawa.
Gi definitive decidis pri la dato kaj daŭro de la dua kunsidaro de
la Universitato, kiu okazos de la 20a aŭg. ĝis la 15a sept, en la sidejo
de la Universitato. La ellaborita programo citas la kunhelpon de 80
diversnaciaj profesoroj, kiuj faros proksumume 300 lecionojn. Uni-

telektuloj. Samtempe komenciĝos la dua kunsidaro de la Internacia

tagon de samideano D-ro Tobias Sigel..   Parolu ĉeestinto:
"Je la 8-a horo matene oni kunvenis antaŭ la Esperanta Oficejo,
Breitmeyer Building, sur la strato Broadway. Tie jam staris kelke
da grandaj platformaj aŭtomobiloj kun 20 seĝoj sur ĉiu. Sur tiuj ĉi
aŭtomobiloj ni veturis al la Esperanta farm-bieno de nia festenanto,
kiu troviĝas 35 mejlojn malproksime de la urbo, je Perfection, Alcona
Graflando.
"La aŭtomobiloj estis ornamitaj per niaj standardoj, steloj kaj
helkoloraj surskriboj; oni povis vidi, ke ni havas grandan nombron
da samideanoj en Detroit. Ciu aŭtomobilo estis plena de diversaj
nacioj kaj rasoj—eĉ la negra raso ne mankis—kaj la aero pleniĝis
per Esperanta babilado.
"Sur la stratoj, oni haltas, rigardas, legas, kaj miras.
"Ni atingis la Esperantan farmo-bienon; ni ekkonis ĝin de mal-
proksime: grandaj Esp. flagoj estis videblaj, kiuj flirtis alte en la
aero. Ni estis surprizitaj vidante, ke renkonte al ni venas granda
nombro da samideanoj kaj samideaninoj, ĉiuj vestitaj en diversaj
Esp.-ĉapoj kaj en aliaj vestoj kun Esp. ornamajoj. Hi estas la dom-
anoj kaj parencoj de la festenanto. Ni salutis unu alian, konatiĝis,
kaj ili bonvenigis nin. Muziko, dancoj, manĝajoj, trinkajoj, deklamoj,
kantado kaj paroladoj. Post la tagmanĝo la festenanto sidiĝis sui
azenon kaj rajdis ĉirkaŭ la arbaro en akompano de ni ĉiuj. Estis bela
parado. Oni haltis ĉe la rivereto, en kiu ni vidis boatojn kun metala
surskrlbo "La Esperantisto." Post parolo de la festenanto, parolis
S-ro C. Leidich kaj aliaj. S-ro D. Szulec havis tre belan, fluan Espe-
rantan paroladon, en kiu li salutis la festenanton en la nomo de Pola
Esp. Asocio. Fine ni kantis 'La Espero' akompanate de muziko, kaj
ni remarŝis al la farmo-domo kun kantoj kaj salutkrioj. Ĝis la kvina
horo posttagmeze la s-ano Fr. Schafus kaj aliaj amuzis la ĉeestantaron
per belegaj deklamoj kaj kantoj. En Esperanto oni kantis hore kun
.muziko 'Rozeto en herbejo' de Goethe, 'La bona kamarado' de Uh-
land, 'La Tilio' de W. Muller, k.a. Poste paroladis S-roj Leidich kaj
A. M. Koliner; la lasta estas antaŭ nelonge veninta el Eŭropo kaj
pasigas kelkajn semajnojn en Detroit. Li klarigis, ke D-ro Sigel fes-
tenas hodiaŭ ne nur la 59an jaron de sia naskiĝo, sed li festenas ankaŭ
la 11-an jaron de sia esperantistiĝo. Lia parolado faris bonan impre-
son, kaj ĝi konvinkis ĉiujn, ke Esp. estas lingvo belsona kaj vivanta.
Fine D-ro Sigel varme dankis la kunvenintojn pro la honoro, kiun
oni faris al li partoprenante en lia festeno. 'La pordoj de mia hejmo,'
li diris, 'estas ĉiam malfermataj por ĉiuj. ĉiu pasanto povas veni poi
kvietigi malsaton kaj soifon.'
"Longe, longe niaj Detroitaj samideanoj ĝuos la belajn memorojn
de tiu tago."

WORLD NEWS
In Mount Albert, Surrey Hills, Victoria, Australia, Esperanto is
making steady progress and the group meets weekly under the pres^
idency of F-ino E. A. Sinnotte.
In Sofia, Bulgaria, Esperanto has been made a required subject
in the five months course for teachers. 80 students are taking part;
S-ro Atanasof is the Esperanto   instructor.
At Cremona, Italy, the Esperantist group arranged a public meet-
ing in the largest theatre and the thousands of citizens there gath-
ered, having heard of the progress of Esperanto, unanimously voted
a petition that Esperanto be introduced in the public schools.
The Germana Esperanto Asocio membership almost tripled in
the past year.
In Finland during the past year 20 courses had about 2,000
students of Esperanto. Esperanto Finnlando has now 400 foreign and
800 home subscribers, more than one for each 4,000 inhabitants.
In Omsk, Siberia, S-ro B. Najdin teaches Esperanto in the Insti-
tute of Agriculture and Industry; 122 are studying Esperanto. Also
club, two young people's clubs, and courses at military institutions,
in all 135.
In the first of May demonstration in Hyde Park, London, a
miner and a railway man presented Esperanto from the viewpoint of
the proletariat.
Besides the obligatory courses at Geneva in the 7th grade, La
Chaux des Fonds, Sev., is to have official courses in the two uppei
grades.
The following international fairs are now making use of Esper-
anto: Barcelona, Spain; Lisboa, Portugal; Lyons, and Paris, France;

ented and adopted by the Chamber of Commerce of Paris in the
Jan.-Feb. number of Le Monde Esperantiste (0.60 f.)
Sparta, Greece, has a new local group with 120 members; courses
taught by Sam. Kristostomis.
The diamond workers' league of Antwerp has begun Esperanto
courses.
In Hungary Esperanto is waking up; lively meetings twice a
week in the Social Museum, Budapest, 30 or 40 present. 70 pupils of
Esperanto in course at Szeged state 'gimnazio.'
Karlovo, Bulgaria; Esperanto society at the Scienca Gimnazio
counts 150 member-students—great enthusiasm—correspondents

A proposal before the Queensland teachers' convention in Jan-
uary, that Esperanto be put into the program of all schools of the
realm nearly carried, 30 votes to 33. The Australasia Labor Party
will consider a like resolution.
Louise Briggs has taken first prize in the Brita Literatura kaj
Debata contest for 1921, as in 1920, with her translation of Tennyson's
"Passing of Arthur."
The problem of an international language is upon the order of
the day for the Ilnd Socialist International Congress now meeting at
Moskow, Russia.
The Swedish parliament's upper house has approved the proposal
of Mayor Lindhagen cf Stockholm:—that the government seek as
effectively as possible, to sustain the proposal of the Swedish world-
language committee before the League of Nations.
An Esperantist Office has been opened at 38, rue Consolat, Mar-
seilles, France. It aims to give all information on commercial and
other matters, to receive visiting Esperantists, and to sell Esperant-
aĵoj of all descriptions.
The Chamber of Commerce of Reichenberg, Czechoslovakia, by
letter of March 2, has announced its entire sympathy with the Esper-
anto movement and its readiness to accept and answer any com-
mercial correspondence in that language.
Jan. 1, 1921, the "Instituto de Sociografio" (Sociology) was
founded by Prof. Moacyr Caminha of Bd. Nogueira Accioly, Forta-
leza, Ceara, Brazil, to use Esperanto in advancing humanity.
The military aviators' school of Tashkent, Turkestan, has put
in Esperanto as a voluntary study. The courses began Dec. 24; other
courses at the L. Tolstoj School.
Scholars or priests knowing Latin, in lands not yet provided with
Esperanto text-books, may be interested in J. Bianchini's "Parva
Grammatica, cum glossario esperanta-latina," published at S. Vito
al Tagliamento, Italy.
The entire postal personnel of the free state of Danzig was official-
ly invited by Postmaster-General Zander to a lecture on Esperanto,

Jan. 14, 1921, in the chief post office. Some 150 attended, and a course
of 60 has started.
The Finnish government, after .considerable animated discus-
sion, voted a subsidy of 25,000 marks to the Esperanto Office at 20
Kasarminkatu.
In Venice, acting at the recommendation of the Italian Ministry
of Marine, Prof. Pizzi has opened a free course with over 100 pupils.
New Esperantist labor groups have started in Funchal, Madeira.
In the past year some 20,000 Esperanto textbooks were sold in
Finnland. The government permits the use of Esperanto in telegrams
and delegates of the U. E. A. may hang up signs in Post Offices and*
railroad stations.
Esperanto during 1920 was taught in 22 German public schools.

She is the woman who has given away all of her precious dis-
covery to the hospitals, and the laboratories, and is now without any
herself, or the means of buying any; the one who lives on a teacher's
salary in France and who didn't have any coal to heat her rooms last
Winter—because of her poverty.
"I gave my secret to the world. It was not to enrich anyone,
It was for all the people." There you have her, the apotheosis of
creative science.
Now for the contrast: On the same day she lands in New York
with her announcement that her precious discovery is a means oi
saving life, we read a story from Washington. It seems that new
and deadly series of scientific products have been evolved; and the
War Department is cooperating with the Navy Department to ex-
periment with them in June.
There is brombenzyicyanide-—a new tear-gas which will blind
men for life in an instant. And there is diphenyichlorasine—a new
toxic smoke, which will strangle men to death in a moment. And
there is poison dust—which will blow with the winds and slay all
life with deadly speed. "As a result of these discoveries," says the
dispatch, "ships will have to he airtight if their crews are to escape
destruction."
And there you have the perfect portrait of a kind of science
which is supported by appropriations from Governments.

Esperanto, M. C. Butler, 5th Edition, 2s 6d at B. E. A.—To me as
an Esperantist for the past 15 years and a user of Pitman for the
past 30 this seems an important work well worthy of study. The
writer invites proposals for improvements, and will gladly answer
questions; he will be happy to receive and list lor possible interred
lations the names of those using the system. I certainly hope that

This corresponds to the Millidge Dictionary in English, having in
addition a handy list of sources for all unofficialized roots. The ex-
cellence of the work Will be indicated by the very pettiness of the
slight errors noted. Cats do not miaui but miaŭi, (v. chat). In the
source-list sturmo is probably a misprint for sturno or ŝtormo of the
book proper (the latter, as defined, is a needless duplication of ven-
tego or uragano); the letter number system of reference is a bit cum-
brous and not complete; e.g., dekoracii. O (what does "O" mean ?).

This book explains the reasons for and the labors of Masonry in a leg-
ible but not always correct Esperanto. The book should be in the
hands of all Masons, even though its somewhat extreme attitude
seems more understandable in Belgium than in our own land.

Ask your newspaper .to reprint the Congress circular—the whole
or a part.
Our catalog prices are subject to change without notice, owing
to frequent changes abroad.
Secretaries of E. A. of N. A. groups are requested to send in
final reports for the year by July 1st together with membership dues,
so that the annual report can be made up showing the maximum
membership.
Any news from Esperanto groups, whether affiliated with the
Association or not, will be welcome.
If you have interesting letters, cards, flags or souvenirs of any
kind bring them to the Congress for the exhibit, and if you cannot
bring them, send them to us properly marked for return after the
Congress. We shall have a much larger exhibit of Magazines than
has been possible since before 1914,—and a room in which they can
be shown to good advantage.
Our special book room will have a good supply of all the usual
text books, dictionaries, books for reading, translations and original
works; also Privat's "Life of Zamenhof," and a new translation by
President Payson.
If you wish Congress circulars sent to any friends, send postal
request for same.
Send in your orders early for extra copies of the Congress issues
of Amerika;—July-August for the Boston and September for the
Praha International Congress.
We would welcome names and addresses of Esperantists who are
not now in touch with the movement so we can send them news.
We are happy to announce that Editor Scott has taken a num-
ber of pupils in correspondence lessons (at present at the rate of
$ .75 per lesson). Even we "spertuloj" might well learn more and
get fit for the rapidly approaching boom. Don't let it catch you
unprepared.

Article VII, section 3, of our Constitution regarding proxies, printed
in the September, 1919, number or obtainable on request from the of-
fice.
The Propaganda Committee request clippings, reports of articles
and editorials in newspapers, magazines, etc., in regard to Esperanto,
