We do not apologize for the fact that this issue of the magazine
contains less than the usual number of pages, because practically as
much material has been crowded into them. Owing to the many
preparations now under way at the Central Office for the business of
our national and international conventions, this August issue has
been prepared simply as a pre-Congress bulletin,—adding a last word
to what has already been said in the previous issues. Our Congress
Amerika Esperantisto which will be a double number we warrant will
make you "sit up and take notice." Those of you who can not stand
the strain of waiting for the appearance of this issue to tell you about
our glorious Congress, better come along with us. There'll be room
for everybody—Are you with us?—All Aboard!

tantoj anoncis sian intereson, kaj oni
nun organizas kurson por la studado.

WORLD GLEANINGS
England. The 8th Congress of
British Esperantists, with a member-
ship of 200 has been brought to a
successful close in Bath. From the
opening reception and the welcome
extended the visitors by the Mayor
to the closing concert, interest and
enthusiasm were at the highest points.
The presence of many Belgian sami-
deanoj added greatly to the success
of the gathering, and only one mar-
ring incident seems to have been reg-
istered. The Bath "Chronicle" in a
"dignified protest" greatly objects to
having the respected citizens of this
little town, known as "Bananoj,"
"classified with the two- or even
three-for-a-penny all-ripe variety of
Banano."
Switzerland. The International In-
formation Bureau for Prisoners of
War (Internacia Informejo pri Milit-
kaptitoj) continues its work in Gen-
eva with a success that is amazing.
The mass of detail involved has
caused this organization to be one of
the most important bureaus engen-
dered by the European hostilities. In
the "Exploration Department" of the
Bureau, which answers inquiries as to
method of getting in touch with the
various military prisons; where are
the captives of a. certain regiment;
etc., 26 persons are employed, answer-
ing from 300 to 400 letters daily.
Communications informing families
about deaths have reached a total of
800 daily within the last months.
Statistics compiled up to the first of
February regarding the Bureau give
the following figures: Persons located,
26,473; Telegrams received, 17,000;
Correspondence received, 900,000;
Correspondence answered, 760,000;
Printed forms sent, 1,554,000; Money
transferred, 400,000 fr.
Denmark. The Danish Red Cross
in Copenhagen has opened a special
information bureau for prisoners, for
the benefit of the German and Rus-
sian armies in the Eastern theatre of
war. It is organized along the lines
of the Geneva Bureau whose work
lies especially among the armies on
the western front.
The 7th Annual Convention of the
Danish societies occurred in Odense,
the 10th and 11th of July. A varied
program of social events and business
meetings took place.
Spain. The Catalonian Federation
after much effort has succeeded in
establishing a permanent meeting
place in Barcelona, in which all Es-
perantists may feel at home at any
hour they may care to visit it. A li-
brary, reading room, cafe, salon, and
offices complete a most pretentious
club-house. The organization of an
international service bureau to fur-
ther commercial relations is well un-
der way.
Russia. The Young Peoples' Es-
peranto Circle in Astrahan, has com-
bined with a local students club,
"Sparta"—the members of the entire
group now learning the international
language, under the instruction of M.
Kabakov. S-ro Fuller, an Austrian,
confined here as a civil prisoner of
war, has been found to be an old
Esperantist and has presented a num-
ber of Esperanto books to the library
of the  local  groups.
An evening concert arranged by the
Esperanto Society in Zaporojje-Ka-
menskoje was exceedingly well-at-
tended, the net sum gained being
turned over to a fund for the relief of
the families of working men serving
in the war.
The director of a private gymnasium
in Orel has agreed to allow an Espe-
ranto course to be opened in his
school, during both winter and sum-
mer.
"La Ondo de Esperanto" is at
present the only Esperanto magazine
in this great country. In spite of the
fact that it has recently appeared
entirely in Esperanto, it has safely
passed the inspection of the mail
censors, and is being received reg-
ularly by its subscribers outside of
the country.
Holland. The 20th of June, a new
society, "United by Esperanto" was
organized  in  Wormerveer.
Scotland. The 19th of June at
Hamilton, the Scottish Esperantists
met for their 10th Congress. One ot
the local Educational authorities spoke
of the educational value of the inter-
national language and expressed
hearty sympathy with the movement.
Egypt. The Egypt Esperanto
Association has been able to welcome
and render assistance to 35 Australian
and  English  soldier-Esperantists.

Japan. M. Kostin, secretary of the
Esperanto society in Harbin, China,
and editor of a teachers' magazine,
upon visiting Japan with his Esperan-
tist wife, was met in Simonoseki by
U.  E. A. delegate  K. Takahasi, who
conducted them during their entire
trip through Japan. Esperanto lec-
tures were given in Hirosima, Kobe,
Tokio and Kanazoua, with much
success.

than ever that in "Esperantujo" there
are no real strangers; the familiar
"Bonan Vesperon" becomes the Open
Sesame to the visitors at our portal,
whether they have come from Russia,
Canada or Idaho.
During the past week our Club
was honored by the visit of Mr. and
Mrs. A. E. McKee of Pittsburgh, Pa.
and Miss M. L. Bibbey of Dorchester,
Mass. Mr. McKee is the President
of the Pittsburgh Esperanto Society,
while Miss Bibbey was formerly
active as Secretary of the Boston
Esperanto Society. As both of these
Clubs rank among the very first, and
are    always    prominently    connected

with our great movement in this coun-
try, a visit by their representatives
was of especial interest to us. In dis-
cussing and comparing ideas, plans
and activities in Club and Class affairs,
we had, so to speak, a foretaste of the
coming Congress. We are pleased to
note that Mr. and Mrs. McKee will
extend their stay in this city until
after   the   Congress.
Of course nobody is going to stay
away who can possibly get here. But,
as noted elsewhere, let us know that
you ARE coming, and make your
reservations ahead.
And now a word especially to the
LADIES. To those who are in doubt
as to "what to wear" (that ever per-
plexing question since the days of
our good Mother Eve) allow me to
suggest that the most practical gar-
ment for every day visits to the Fair
and the Congress is a warm tailor suit.
Or, if a silk suit or dress is worn, a
heavy wrap or coat will be of great
comfort. During July and August we
have our coolest weather, and we learn
that some of our visitors who have
brought only light weight clothing,
such as is worn during the hot sum-
mer months in the East, have ex-
perienced some discomfort. If the
weather should become unusually
warm, the extra coat can easily be
checked at the Exposition.
As in the cases of other Conven-
tions and Congresses, women who
travel alone will receive our special
care. If they will address the Secre-
tary of the San Francisco Club (name
and address noted in the Club Direct-
ory) or Mrs. Cora Gordon Waggoner,
whose card has appeared in ihis
magazine, all possible assistance will

THE RED CROSS AND THE ESPERANTO CONGRESSES
San  Francisco, July 22,  1915.
Notwithstanding the war, the Elev-
enth Annual World Congress of Es-
peranto to be held here August 22-29
has registered a considerable number
of delegates. The previous Congress,
which was to have been held in Paris
last year, had registered over 4,000
delegates from 47 countries. One of
the most important subjects to be
discussed at the present Congress is
the extensive use of Esperanto by the
French and German governments for
the dissemination of their military re-
ports and bulletins. Regular daily
bulletins in Esperanto are published
and circulated by the Germans, as
well as a voluminous, semi-monthly,
report, covering all the developments
of the great conflict.
Although the British government
has not yet made official use of the
auxiliary language during the present
war, the British Esperanto Society
has raised funds for the purchase and
equipment of two modern motor am-
bulances, christened "Esperanto No.
1" and "Esperanto No. 2" respective-
ly. They are accompanied by Espe-
ranto speaking drivers and nurses.
There are many Esperantists among
the German, French and Belgian sol-
diers at the front, and, according to
recent reports, the Esperanto ambu-
lances have been rendering the most
efficient service. They were donated
to the Belgian Red Cross Society and
are in constant use somewhere along
the German front.
A small vocabulary, printed in Es-
peranto and various national lan-
guages, serves to facilitate immediate
understanding when the wounded do
not know the new language. The
Red Cross Exhibit, in the Liberal
Arts Building, at the Exposition here,
contains a number of these Esperanto
"key vocabularies" prepared for dif-
ferent languages. There is also a
photograph of "Esperanto Ambulance
No. 1."

Introduction of Esperanto into

Methods of Organizing and Con-
ducting Esperanto Groups;
Use of Esperanto to develop Com-
merce with South America, and after
the War, with Europe.
A valuable propagandilo with which
every Esperantist in this country
should be well supplied will be the
Congress Number of Amerika Espe-
rantisto. The publishers wish to
make this special edition of our offi-
cial organ as large as possible, which
can not be done unless they are given
beforehand some approximate idea
of the number of copies to be dis-
tributed. Will not every member
take advantage of the special prices
quoted and send orders at once? The
extremely nominal rates place bun-
dle orders within the reach of every-

Association Notes
The Central Office extends its sin-
cere good wishes and congratulations
to one of its pioneer workers, Mr. K.
C. Kerr of Youngstown, Ohio, on the
occasion of his marriage to Miss Liz-
zie Tordoff of England, in Philadel-
phia, this month. Our movement in
this country gains a worthy addition
in the person of Miss Tordoff who has
been active in the cause in her own

akceptas malgrandulino, kiun mi tak-
sas sepjara, sed poste mi aiidis, ke si
jam havas dekdu jarojn. Maldensaj
blondaj haroj estas algluitaj ĉirkaŭ la
pala vizaĝeto, ne plibeligita per du
akvokoloraj strabokuloj, sed la mi-
zera korpeto estas vestita per purega
kitelo. _ Kun la rutino de urbega jun-
ularo ŝi invitas min eniri la ĉambron,
mediteme ŝi aŭskultas mian plendon.
"Cu via patro ne ĉeestas?" mi de-
mandas.
"Ne,'' ŝi diras kun freŝa, decida vo-

"Patro ja estas en la milito. Kaj
vi ne povas imagi, sinjorino, kian
multegon ni devas faril Panjo nur
povas prizorgi la mastrumadon kaj

domo. Nu, kaj per la lernistoj oni
havas ja multe da ĉagreno. Apenaŭ
iu ajn estas iomete instruita, li estas
'enarmeigata'   (ŝi   efektive   diris   "en-
armeigata"), kaj tiam la sercado kaj
instruado  denove  komenciĝas—"

Kaj nun de la telefono komenciĝis

"Mi prizorgados ke via moŝto mor-

Kun sincera admiro mi forlasis la
junan heroinon, kiu tiel kuraĝe prenis
sur siajn delikatajn junajn sultrojn la
sekvojn de la milito.

Inklino al ŝercado estas tre ofte
trajto de reĝaj personoj, kiuj eble tro-
vas en sensencajoj distrajon de la
enuo de siaj oficialaj devoj.
La Nov-Jorka "Times" memorigas
okazon en kiu la bela imperiestnno
Eŭgenio (kiu ankoraŭ vivas je la ago
de okdeksep jaroj) estis trompata,
kun le helpo de sia edzo, Napoleono
tria,  per  amuzanta  pantomimo.
Speciala ambasadoraro estis alve-
ninta en Parizon el Birmo. Tri ta-
gojn post ĝia alveno oni sciigis la
Kortegon ke la solena akcepto de la
senditoj okazos en la Tuilieries la
sekvantan vesperon. Je la antaŭ or-
donita horo, Napoleono kaj Eŭgenio,
ĉirkaŭitaj de la ĉefanoj de la imperia
domanaro, okupis siajn kutimajn lo-
kojn en la trondambro.
La imperiestrino ordonis ke oni en--
konduku la ambasadorojn—la pordo
de la koutraŭa flanko de la granda sa-
lono  malfermiĝis,  kaj  aro  de  blank-
vestitaj personoj, portantaj sur la ka-
po fantaziajn turbanojn, kelkaj ankaŭ
kun longaj grizaj barboj, eniris, jetis
sin sternite sur la plankon, kaj ko-
mencis rampi al la trono kun la plej
ridindaj  korptordajoj.
La ŝarĝo sur la ĝentileco de la de-
estantaro estis tiel peza, ke nur la
brovsulkigoj de la imperiestrino, (kiu
estis, kiel kutime, tre zorgema pri ia
konduto de la korteganoj) malhelpis
malkaŝitan ridon.
Fininte du trionojn de la alproksi-
rnigo al la trono, la tri maljunaj defoj
de la senditaro subite desis kaptorda-
di, kaj komencis renverse salti. Eŭ-
genio evidente kredis ke tio estas en
Birmo la korekta maniero montri re-
spekton, car, kiam la generate stoika
imperiestro komencis ridi, si riprodis
lin pro Ha manko de dececo per tonoj
kiujn facile aŭdis tiuj, kiuj dirkaŭis
la tronon.
Jus tiam la plej maljuna el la Blr-

maj ambasadoroj atingis la tronpiedon
per hna renverssalto kiu jetis lin tiel
perforte de la piedoj de Eŭgenio ke
liaj falsaj haroj forflugis, kaj kune

Al la mirigita rigardo de la imper-
iestrino ekaperis la vizaĝo de la mar-
kizo de Gallifet, viveca kaj gaja kapi-
tano de kavelerio, poste fama generalo
kaj milita ministro.
Ciuj ridegis, speciale post kiam la
aliaj ambasadoroj demetis siajn tur-
banojn kaj barbojn, kaj estis rekona-
taj kiel anoj de la imperia ĉirkaŭan-
taro. Ciuj tre ĝuis la ŝercadon krom
la imperiestrino, kiu tre koleriĝis.
Si komencis ploregi, diris ke oni tre
insultis sin, forlasis la tronĉambron,
kaj la sekvantan matenon foriris el
Parizo.
Ciuj, kiuj opinias ke tiaj ŝercajoj,
kvankam amuzaj, enhavas iom da
malĝentileco, estos kontentaj scii ke
Napoleono povis refari paeon kun sia
edzino nur post kelkaj semajnoj.

Povo de Preĝado
De post marto 1915 la nombro da
la korespondajoj rnalpligrandiĝis pro
la rehejmigo de multaj civilkaptitoj
kaj pro la neebleco korespondi kun
okupita Galicio, al kiu ni antaŭe
transsendis multajn korespondajojn.
Nuntempe (junio) la movado de la
poŝtajoj atingas 150-200 ĉiutage. De
novembro 1914 ĝis fino de majo 1915
ĝi sumas 71,652 (Hum la antaŭa jaro,
sama periodo: 27.994). En la sama
daŭro ni ricevis pit ol 35,000 respond-
kuponojn kaj plurajn milojn de di-
versnaciaj markoj.

oni bezonis la pluvon iuj eklezioj
kuniĝis por petegi ĝin.
