THE  SIXTH  INTERNATIONAL  CONGRESS  is   coming  to

DISTRICT   SECRETARIES.
The membership of most of the members of
the E. A. oft N. A. expired September 1 1909.
A certain proportion of you have renewed, but
at the time of going to press many had not
paid for the present year. We are this year
undertaking bigger things than ever. We need
the membership fees, and we need still more
the solid backing of an organization of many
thousands. Your officers will write to and in-
terview during the year nearly every man of
prominence in the educational, scientific, execu-
tive and legislative branches of the govern-
ment, Mr. Carpenter, secretary to President
Taft, and the United States Commission of
Education.
The invariable question is, "How many do
you represent?" Your officers cannot claim to
represent anyone not a member of the associa-
tion. The fee for individual membership is
fifty cents; the fee for a club is one dollar for
a charter and fifty cents annually for each
member. In the affairs of the association, elec-
tion of officers, etc., each individual member
and each member of a chartered organization
has one vote. Secretaries of societies, clubs
and groups, and all individual members are
requested to send the fees without personal
solicitation and so save both time and money
better devoted to the work of the Congress.
Membership dues and charter fee should be
sent to your district secretary, where there is
one, otherwise to the general secretary of the
Esperanto Association of North America, Cham-
ber of Commerce, Washington, D. C.

these secretaries should be sent all dues, in-
quiries regarding organization, etc., from Es-

CO-OPERATION.
A comparison of the mailing-list of Amerika
Eeperantisto and the membership list of the
Esperanto Association of North America shows
that these are by no means the same. Every-
one interested in Esperanto should join the or-
ganization which is undertaking the general
propaganda of the language and the task of
preparing for the Sixth International Esper-
anto Congress, but on the other hand the mem-
bers of the association should do their best in
support of the journal which, as the official
organ, gives generously of its space to, and
will contain all official notices of, the Es-
peranto Association of North America and the
Sixth Congress. Organizers and secretaries are
urged to secure subscribers for the journal as
well as members for the association, and they
will find an increased interest from the mem-
bers if these know in this way what is being
done.
DISTRICT ORGANIZATION.
which always makes for power. If the Esper-
antists of each state or group of states would
unite in a district association, work for the
spread of Esperanto within that district, en-
courage and assist in the establishment of local
societies and groups, greater results could be
accomplished.                                                    ?
In the Prairie Division, the Nebraska Esper-
anto Association is already organized, and
many in Iowa have written to the General
Councilor of the Division with a view to creat-
ing a federation in that state. The Councilor,
Mr. C. J. Roberts, 1920 South 53rd St., Omaha,
Nebraska, will gladly receive letters expressing
the desire for state organization for Iowa,
Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and
Missouri, or members in these states may write
direct to the Central Office. As soon as a suffi-
cient number have expressed a desire to or-
ganize, the members will be put in touch with
each other.
Beyond the fee of $1.00 for a charter as a
district organization, there is no additional ex-
pense because such a district federation exists.
The membership fees for the E. A. of N. A.
are now fifty cents, of which one-half is re-
tained by the state branch when such exists,
and otherwise is expended by the General
Councilor of the division.
In view of the fact that "La Sesa" is to meet
in Washington next August, it increases the
importance   of  active   work   for  organization,

The following By-Laws were adopted by the
Association in accordance with the scheme of
organization adopted by the Esperanto Asso-
ciation of North  America in August:

Article I—Objects.
Sec 1. The Object of this Association shall
be the furtherance of the aims and the ad-
ministration of the affairs of the Esperanto
Association of North America within the State
of Pennsylvania, and in accordance with the
constitution of said association, the perform-
ance of the duties and the enjoyment of the
privileges of a District organization of the
said association in and for the territory. in-
cluded within the boundaries of said State.
Article II—Membership.
Sec 1. Membership in this Association shall
carry with it full membership in the Esperanto
Association of North America, together with all
rights and privileges connected therewith.
Sec 2. Any person residing in the State of
Pennsylvania who is interested in Esperanto
shall be elegible to membership in this Associa-
tion.                               ,
Article III—Charters.
Sec 1. Local Clubs, Groups, or Societies,
within the State of Pennsylvania, all of whose
active members are members of this Associa-
tion, may be chartered by the Executive Com-
mittee upon application signed by five members
of such organization and the payment of a
charter fee of One Dollar, ($1.00).
Sec. 2. Each organization chartered by this
Association shall keep on hie with the Cor-
responding Secretary a complete copy of the
constitution and by-laws adopted by such
organization and the names and addresses of
all its officers.
Sec. 3. Subject to the provisions of these by-
laws, and subject to the general supervision
and control of the Executive Committee, char-
ters issued by this Association shall give to
organizations receiving same full power and
authority to carry on propaganda work, to con-
duct groups and classes for studying and
teaching Esperanto, and to collect from their
active members the dues of this Association.
Article IV—Officers.
Sec. 1. The Officers of this Association shall
be a President, First Vice President, Second
Vice President, Corresponuing Secretary, Re-
cording Secretary, Five Directors, and a Treas-
urer.
Sec. 2. All of these except the treasurer
shall compose the General Council.
Sec. 3. Immediately after each annual elec-
tion the General Council shall elect irom its
number three who shall constitute i.ie Execu-
tive Committee.
Article V—Elections.
Sec. 1. Persons applying directly to this
Association for admission to membership shall
be elected by the Executive Committee.
Sec. 2.- Persons becoming active members of
organizations chartered by this Association
shall thereby become members of this Associa-
tion.
Sec 3. The General Council may from time
to time elect such Honorary Members of the
Association as they may deem fitting and
proper. Such Honorary Members may be other
than residents of the State of Pennsylvania.
Sec. 4. All the officers except the Directors
shall be elected by a majority vote of all mem-
bers present in person or by proxy at the
annual meeting of the Association.
Sec. 5. For the purpose of electing the
Directors five Districts shall be formed as fol-
lows in the State of Pennsylvania, from each
of which shall be elected One Director by a
majority vote of members present in person or
by proxy at the annual meeting of the Associa-
tion.
(a)     The Counties of Philadelphia, Dela-
ware, Chester, Northampton, Montgomery,
Bucks, Lehigh, Berks, Lancaster, Sckuylkill,
Lebanon, Dauphin, York, Adams, and Cumber-
land shall form the Southeastern District.
(b)     The Counties of Allegheny, Westmore-
land, Washington, Greene, Fayette, Somerset,
Bedford, Fulton, Franklin, Beaver, Butler,
Armstrong, Indiana and Lawrence, shall form
the Southwestern District.
(o) The Counties of Erie, Crawford, Mer-
cer, Venango, Warren, Forest, Clarion, Jeffer-
son, Elk, McKean, Potter and Cameron shall
form the Northwestern district.
(d)     The Counties of Tioga, Bradford, Sus-
quehanna, Wayne, Pike, Monroe, Lackawanna,
Wyoming, Luzern, Carbon, and Sullivan shall
form the Northeastern District.
(e)     The Counties of Cambria, Clearfield,
Blair, Center, Clinton, Lycoming, Columbia,
Perry, Juniata, Mifflin, Huntingdon, Montour,
Northumberland, Union and Snyder shall form
the Central District.
Sec. 6. Whenever one-fiftn of the members
in any district shall petition the General Coun-
cil for the Exercise of the right of recall, the
Council shall order an election held after
thirty days written notice to each member in
such District: and if a majority of the mem-
bers in such District shall vote for the recall
of its Director, he shall stand thereby re-
moved from office.
Sec. 7. All vacancies by death, resignation,
recall, or otherwise occurring in any office of
the Association shall be filled by the General
Council; provided however that Directors must
always reside in the District which they
represent.
Sec. 8. All officers of this Association shall
remain in office until the annual meeting next
after their election or until their successors
are duly elected, unless, in case of a Director,
he be recalled as provided in Section 8 above.
Sec. 9. Upon nomination of the Director of
any District, the Executive Committee shall
appoint members of such District to serve dur-
ing its pleasure as assistants to the Director.
The work of such assistants shall be under tne
supervision and Control of the Director.
Article VI—Duties of Officers.
Sec. 1. The President or First or Second
Vice President in the order named above shall
preside at all meetings of the Association and
of the General Council. The President shall
be ex-officio a member of the Executive Com-
mittee.

Sec. 2. The Corresponding Secretary shall
conduct all official correspondence of the Asso-
ciation, the General Council, and the Executive
Committee. He shall collect the dues of the
Association and keep a complete record of the
membership. He shall give bond to the Asso-
ciation in the amount of One Thousand Dollars
($1,000.)
Sec. 3. The Recording Secretary shall keep
accurate minutes of all meetings of the Asso-
ciation and of the General Council. He shall
also perform such other duties as may be pre-
scribed by the General Council or the Executive
Committee.
Sec. 4. Subject to the supervision and the
control of the Executive Committee, each of
the five Directors shall have complete charge of
the propaganda work in the District from
which he is elected. In matters other than
financial, all reports and communications from
and to local organizations chartered by this
association shall be sent through the Director
of the District in which they are located.
Sec. 5. The Treasurer shall receive and take
charge of all money paid into the treasury and
shall pay out same only on warrants signed by
the Chairman of the Executive Committee and
countersigned by the Corresponding Secretary.
He shall give bond to the association in the
amount of One Thousand Dollars  ($1,000.00).
Sec. 6. The General Council shall direct the
general policy of the Association and shall, ex-
ercise a supervision over its work.
Sec. 7. The Executive Committee, subject to
the supervision and control of the General
Council, shall have full charge anu manage-
ment of the affairs of the Association. It may
be recalled by the General Council at any
time, whereupon a new Executive Committee
shall be appointed.
Article VII—Dues and Votes.
Sec. 1. Each member of this Association
shall pay annually in advance in the manner
hereinafter provided, the sum of Fifty cents
(50c)  and shall be entitled to one vote.
Sec. 2. Individual members, not belonging
to any local organization chartered by this
Association, shall pay their dues to the Cor-
responding Secretary.
Sec. 3. Members belonging to local organiza-
tions chartered by this Association shall pay
their dues to the Secretary of such local or-
ganization.
Sec. 4. Secretaries of all organizations char-
tered by this Association shall remit to the
Corresponding Secretary not later than the
25th of each month, and at the rate of 50c per
capita, all dues collected for this Association.
Sec. 5. The Corresponding Secretary shall
pay Twenty-five cents (25c) per capita of all
dues received by him into the treasury of this
Association and shall remit the balance
monthly to the secretary of the Esperanto As-
sociation of North America.
Sec. 6. The dues of Honorary Members shall
be paid by the Association but they shall have
no vote.
Sec. 7. The annual dues shall be payable
upon admission to membership and upon the
first of each September thereafter, except that
members admitted during July and August
shall be in good standing until September first
of the following year.
Sec. 8.   The fiscal year of this Association
shall begin on the first of September.
Article  VIII—Meetings.
See. 1. The annual meeting of the asso-
ciation shall be held in the month of October
at a time and place to be designated by the
Executive Committee. Written notice of said
meeting shall be sent to all members at least
two weeks prior thereto.
Sec. 2. Special meetings of the Association
shall be called at any time by the Correspond-
ing Secretary when directed by the General
Council or the Executive Committee. One
week's notice of such special meetings shall be
given in writing to all members.
Sec. 3. The General Council shall meet im-
mediately after the annual meeting of the As-
sociation*in October, and upon the second Mon-
days of January, April, and July, and at such
other times as it may be convened by the
President or First Vice President.
Sec. 4. The Executive Committee shall meet
for organization immediately after its appoint-
ment and as often thereafter as it may deem
necessary for the proper transaction of its
business.
Sec. 6. At all meetings of this Association
representation and voting by proxy shall be
permitted.
Article IX—Quorum.
Sec. 1. A quorum of the Association shall
consist of ten members entitled to vote.
Sec 2. A quorum of the General Council
shall consist of five members.
Sec. 3.    A   quorum  of  the   Executive  Com-
mittee shall consist of three members.
Artiole X—Amendments.
Sec. 1. These by-laws may be amended by
the General Council at any meeting. A two-
thirds vote of those present shall be necessary
to pass anv amendment.

fakon de Esperanto. Sro. Briggs mem redaktas
gin, skribante diverslandajn novajojn pri la
lingvo. Laŭ la kutimo de la kliSo-sindikatoj,
oni eldonas seskolonan paĝon. Gi havas tri
dukolonajn dividojn, sub la rubriko: The In-
ternational Language, Esperanto, in Action.
Oni taksas por ĝi specialan prezon—tri dolar-
ojn, sed diras ke, se almenaŭ cent Jurnaloj
akceptos la servon oni faros ordinaran fakon
por Esperanto je ordinaraj prezoj. Propagan-
distoj kaj Jurnaloj petu plenan informon kaj
specimenan pagon Ĉe American Press Associa-
tion, Des Moines.
Retrovita per Esperanto.—Tre interesa ra-
konto originate publikigita en la Jurnaloj de
Filadelfio, sed poste reproduktita en multaj
aliaj, el kiu m povas prezenti nur skizon:
Antan pli ol kvindek jaroj, pola skulptisto,
nonie Henry Dmochowski Saunders, loĝis kaj
edziĝis en Filadelfio. Post la morto de sia
edzino kaj siaj dunaskitaj infanoj, li skulptis
sian lastan statuon, per kiu li celis konservi
ilian memoron sur la tero. Jam de multaj
jaroj tiu majstrajo estis unu el la belaĵoj de la
tombejo kie ĝi staris, kaj fariĝis loka ligendo
ke la kreinto, post ĝia starigo, Bin dronigis en
apuda rivero. Antaŭ nelongc Sro. Louis Te«t,
kiu estis lernanto en unu el la klasoj instruitaj
de Prof. Christen, komencis korespondadon kun
samideano en Rusa Polujo. Tiu skribis, ke li
havis kiel najbaron la solan vivantan parencon
de unu skulptisto nomita SaundeTs, kaj petis,
cu Sinjoro Test povus doni informon pri la
statuo. Okazis, ke el ciuj Sro. Test plej intime
konis la historion de la monumento, eĉ koninte
la virinon kiu pozis por la skulptisto. Ciuj
cirkonstancoj plektiĝas en tre belan kaj kor-
tusan historion, kiu vaste publikiĝis en nia
lando kaj faras frapantan ateston pri la utileco
de la lingvo Esperanto.

IN     FOREIGN     LANDS
Colombia.—Almost every nation on the globe
has an Esperanto journal, and the appearance
of a new one at Cucuta, Colombia, is remark-
able for its being the first in that nation. The
Kolombia Stelo (Columbian Star) published its
initial number in September, as the official
organ of the Esperantist Union of Colombia.
The price is one cent per copy.
France.—A small grammar of Esperanto,
sold at two cents a copy, has reached a total
circulation of 300,000. The Grands Magazins
de Louvre, the largest department store in
France, advertises correspondence in Esperanto,
and La Presse, a Paris, daily newspaper, does
the same. The Catholic Esperanto Office has
been established at No. 10, rue Beranger, Paris.
An international committee for the study of
birds and insects, especially their methods of
flight with a view to their relation to human
aviation, has been formed in Paris. They pro-
pose to use Esperanto for international cor-
respondence and invite the cooperation of all
who are interested. The secretary's, address is
Sro. Taverne, 164 rue St. Honore, Paris.
Congress at Bucharest.—Among the several
minor conventions held in Europe this year was
the congress of Boumanian, Servian and Bul-
garian Esperantists held at Bucharest in Au-
gust. The three nations were well repre-
sented, Bulgaria sending 111 representatives.
Esperanto is much to be recommended to the
Balkan states, where the language problem is
about as complicated as anywhere in the world.
Public officers showed themselves especially
favorable to the convention and gave the free
use of a military officers' dormitory for lodging
of the foreign guests. Crossing the national
border was permitted without formality on
presentation of the congress cards. The queen
of Boumania, who has quite a literary reputa-
tion under the nom de plume of Carmen Sylva,
received a large delegation of Esperantists.
She has long been favorable to the language,
reads and speaks it, and several of her works
are to be translated into Esperanto. As pa-
troness and founder of schools for the blind,
she has had the language taught in these in-
stitutions.
Exposition of Student Literature.—An at-
tempt is being made in Prague, by a society of
Esperantist students, to organize an interna-
tional exposition of student literature and pub-
lication of all kinds, in all languages. They
promise to send a copy of their own Esperanto
periodical to all »h" make contributions to
their exposition, sruuing them either matter of
the character mentioned, or illustrated post
cards. The address is Studento, Praha 11-516,

Esperanto in China.—The editor of the Edu-
cational Review, of Shanghai, writes: "There
is a school for teaching Esperanto advertised in
one of the Chinese papers, and I understand
there is quite a sale for Esperanto books. Sev-
eral firms keep them."
Esperantist Socialists.—Miss Helen Fryer, a
well-known Esperantist of London, and author
of a favorite text-book, has taken the initiative
in the organization of the British League of
Esperantist Socialists and has addressed a
strong circular to the socialists, which has the
endorsement, by the way, of a large number of
eminent socialist workers, including such fa-
miliar names as Victor Grayson and Kier
Bardie. American socialists and others who
wish copies of the circular may obtain them
for a stamp sent to Miss Fryer at No. 39 Calais
Gate, Camberwell, London, S. E.
Free Thought Society.—In its Bulletin the
international society Libera Penso makes the
following formal statement of its aims: "(1)
To help the free expression and communication
of ideas on every theoretical and practical sub-
ject, to defend that liberty against every sort
of oppression and disrespect, and to organize
a universal body of freethinkers; (2) To facili-
tate the task of other free-thought societies
and federations by propagating among them
the knowledge and use of Esperanto. It re-
fuses to adopt officially any solution of the
various problems, the free discussion of which
it establishes in itself and will render possible,
as much as lies within its power, among all of
mankind." The secretary's address is: Sro.

Universal Union of Students.—One of the
world societies now being organized by means
of Esperanto is the Universale Students Unio.
It has no less ambitious an aim than the con- '
version of all the students of the world to the
Esperanto idea and uniting them in a single
society. Circulars are sent by the secretary,
Sro. J. de Buljovszky, Nagymezo u. 12, Buda-
pest.
Germany.—A group of eight Swedish stu-
dents visited the principal towns in August,
creating much public interest by the practical
demonstration of the utility of Esperanto.
Courses in Berlin and Dresden were resumed in
September with large attendance. Reports
from twenty-two clubs are printed in the Oc-
tober Germana Esperantisto. A fine catalogue,
issued by the largest continental manufacturers
of photographic supplies, may be received on
request from the firm: Huttig A.-G., Dresden-

KONSENTOS ĉiu ke legado havas
grandan influon sur la penso. Tiu,
kiu kutime legas seriozajn verkojn,
nepre havos seriozajn pensojn; tiu, kiu
legas nur malpezajn, flugfoliajn skrib-
ajojn, nature pensos malserioze. La
grandaj aŭtoroj, kiuj pritraktas la vivon
laŭ altmoralaj principoj, donos al la le-
ganto la povon konsideri vivon laŭ mor-
ala vidpunkto, kaj la aŭtoroj, kiuj ĉiam
ŝercas pri ĉio, inspires en la animo de tiu,
kiu nenion alian legas, la kutimon vidi ĉion
ŝerce. Sed la influon de legado sur la
karaktero mi ne deziras tie ĉi pritrakti.
Nur ĝia influo sur stilo, kaj aparte es-
peranta stilo, estas la nuna demando.
Dum miaj akademiaj tagoj nia pro-
fesoro de angla literature ofte kaj longe
insistis ke dum kelke da tempo antaŭ ol
skribi la tezojn por la duonjaraj kon-
kursoj, la lernantoj legu nur unu aŭ du
elektitajn aŭtorojn, kaj ke tiuj aŭtoroj
estu zorge elprenitaj el la eble plej bon-
stilaj anglaj verkistoj. Tiu profesoro
havis tre grandan admiron por la ver-
kistoj uzintaj la plej simplan kaj rektan
stilon kaj malgrandajn, simplajn anglo-
saksajn vortojn, kaj lernanto ne povus
pli plaĉi al li, ol zorge kaj kutime legi la
verkojn de Charles Lamb, Addison,
Steele kaj Irving. . Sed, foje, kiam hi
devis partopreni en oratora konkurso, li
konsilis la forlason de tiuj kvietaj aŭ-
toroj kaj la legado de Macaulay, Burke.
Webster kaj aliaj aiitoroj havantaj pli
sonoran stilon kaj impresajn periodojn.
Pri la influo de la legado de la plej bon-
stilaj anglaj verkoj sur la stilo de la
lernantoj, eĉ malgraŭ la konkurenco de la
ĉiutaga interparolado, li neniel dubis.
Kaj efektive li grande prosperis per sia
sistemo, kaj multaj el liaj lernantoj poste
fariĝis   konataj   verkistoj,   kaj   simpla.
klara, esprimplena, efektiva stilo ĉiam
estis marko de la laŭreatoj de tiu aka-
demio.
Se bonaj aiitoroj anglaj havas tiom da
influo sur angle-parolantaj knaboj, r?e
, kiuj la malbona influo de la nezorga eiu-
taga interparolado kontraŭstaras la efikon
de la legado, kiom pli da efikeco la le-
gado de la plej bonstilaj verkistoj esper-
antaj havas por formi la stilon de esper-
antaj lernantoj, ĉe kiuj la bedaŭrinda in-
fluo de nezorga interparolado nepre faras
sin malpli sentata, tial ke tia interparo-
lado estas malpli konstanta, kaj malpli
nezorga. Sed la demando kiun ni novaj
esperantistoj ĉiam proponas estas: Kiuj
estas la plej legindaj verkoj pro ilia stilo ?
Kiel oni povas elekti la bonstilistojn, por
ke oni legu nur iliajn verkojn? El la
multaj libroj, kiuj jam eldoniĝis, kaj nun
eldoniĝas, ni estas certaj ke ne ĉiuj estas
bonaj. Ni ne havas la tempon por legi
ĉiujn, kaj eĉ se ni ĝin havus, leginte
ĉiujn eldonitajn verkojn, la malbonajn
kun la bonaj, ni perdus la profitan efikon
de la legado, car, ne sciante kiuj estas la
bonstilaj, ni ne havus la eblon malelekti
la malĝustajn kaj maloportunajn vortojn
kaj esprimojn, kaj enmeti en la memoron
nur la bonajn. Kaj eĉ se ni havus tiun
povon, estus necese ke ni estu, ne nove-
bakitaj, sed spertaj esperantistoj, kun
tute perfektitaj kutimoj de pensado kaj
skribado, por ke miksita legado de napen-
emaj skribistoj ne difektu nian stilon.
Estas malnova proverbo ke malbonaj
kunuloj difektas bonajn morojn, kaj
nenie estas tio pli vera ol en la legado de
senlertaj kaj nepenemaj aŭtoroj. Kio,
do, estas nia kriterio? Kiel ni elektos
tion, kio estas bona, kaj evitos tion, kio
estas malbona?
Nu, ni havas tre fidindan gvidon en nia
majstro. Tiu, kiu elpensis la lingvon,
estas ĝis nun la plej instruita pri ĝiaj
nuancoj, kaj la plej sperta por ĝia nzado.
Komencu ni, sekve, atentante liajn vor-

tojn; En la antaŭparolo de la Funda-
menta Krestomatio, li diris klare tion,
kio estas, laŭ lia opinio, la vera fonto de
la lingvo Esperanto pura kaj nedifektita,
kaj tio estas la Fundaments Krestomatio.
"Estas dezirinde," li diris, "ke ciu, antaŭ
ol komenci la legadon de la esperantista
literaturo, tralegu atente la Fundamentan
Krestomation. Ne deprenante de la
lernanto la eblon kritike proprigi al si
ĉiujn riĉigojn kaj regule faritajn perfek-
tigojn, kiujn li trovas en la literaturo, la
Fundamenta Krestomatio por ĉiam gar-
dos lin de blinda kaj senkritika alpro-'
prigo de stilo erara." Oni ne povas tro
insisti pri tiu punkto. Estas ĉiam tre
bona kutimq ofte tralegi kaj relegi la
Fundamentan Krestomation. Unuj por-
cioj estas pli interesaj ol aliaj, kaj eĉ al
mi ŝajnas ke unuj estas pli valoraj ol
aliaj; sed la majstro aprobas ĝin tutan.
Mi trovas la porciojn skribitajn de Dro.
Zamenhof mem pli interesaj kaj valoraj
ol multaj aliaj, sed, memorante Han apro-
bon, levu ni zorge ankaŭ la aliajn. Aparte
rekomendinda estas la ofta legado kaj eĉ
la parkera lernado de la antaŭparolo kaj
de la artikoloj pri Esperanto. Se oni
dezirus kontroli sian komprenon de la
senco de la mirinda traktato pri la esenco
kaj la estonteco de la lingvo internacia,
oni ne povus pli bone agi ol kompari ĝin
kun la bonega angla traduko de Sro. A.
E. Wackrill.
Mi estas unu el tiuj, kiuj ŝatas la Ek-
zercaron por la legado, kaj mi pensas ke
ĉiu esperawtisto, eĉ sperta. devas apliki la
konsilon de Dro. Zamenhof pri la Funda-
menta Krestomatio ankaŭ al la Ekzcr-
caro. Pri la senco de vortoj. la opor-
tuneco de kunmetaĵoj, la ĝusteco de es-
primoj kaj la eleganteco de frazoj, oni
konsultu la vortarojn. la gramatikojn kaj
la sintaksojn. se oni tiel volas. Sed ne
forgesu ni ke funde ĉiuj aŭtoritatoj es-
perantistaj ĉerpas la pli grandan parton
de siaj informo kaj spertuleco. se ili estas
bonaj fidindaj. el la Eksercaro (La Fun-
damento) kaj la Fundamenta Kresto-
matio. Oni tre volonte konsentas ke
multe de bona esperantista skribado trov-
iĝas ekster tiuj ei du verkoj. sed estas
aksiomo, kiun ni ne devas forgesi, ke ĉio.
kio estas kontraŭ tiuj ĉi du verkoj estas
malbona Esperanto.   Sekve ne estas eble
tro ofte tralegi aŭ tro zorge studi ilin.
Sed eĉ se ni faras nian devon al la
lingvo kaj al ni mem, kaj tralegas ofte
kaj zorge la Ekzercaron kaj la Funda-
mentan Krestomation, ni bezonas legi
aliajn verkojn. Se oni legas nur la bonan.
oni ne povas tro legi. Mi mem sentas
min ne tute feliĉa, ne leginte ĉiusemajne
almenaŭ unu novan libron, kaj, car mi
deziras akiri la eblon pensi esperante, kiel
mi pensas angle, mi penas legi pliparte
esperantajn librojn. Sendube aliaj
sentas similan bezonon. Kiel, do, elekti
tiujn librojn, kiuj sekvos tiujn ĉi du?
Nu, komence, aliĝu ni al Dro. Zamenhof.
Tiu estas sendanĝera. Sed kiu el liaj
verkoj estas la plej ŝatinda? car necese
ĉiuj ne estas samvaloraj. Oni kutime
citas Hamleton, kiel la plej Ŝatatan verkon
de nia majstro. Mi ne mallaŭdas tiun
altvaloran verkon, sed mi trovas aliajn
pli utilaj kaj eĉ pli legindaj. Por la
lernantoj, kaj eĉ por la novaj esperan-
tistoj, kiuj jam sentas sin ne plu lernan-
toj, mi pensas ke la tute plej bona verko
el ĉiuj ankoraŭ produktitaj en nia kara
lingvo estas Marts, tradukita el la pola
lingvo de nia majstro, kiu nun enpres-
tiĝas en la Revuo, kaj kiu estos sendube
baldaŭ represita kiel aparta eldonaĵo. La
stilo de Marta estas tiel klara, kaj simpla,
kaj samtempe tiel esprimplena, ke oni
ĉiam, mi pensas, rigardos ĝin kiel mod-
elon. La dialogoj kaj priskriboj estas
plenaj je ĉiutagaj parolturnoj kaj popo-
laj frazoj la plej utilaj. Tamen ĉio estas
kiel eble plej bonstila, kaj tiel vive rakon-
tita ke oni vidas ĝin antaŭ siaj propraj
okuloj. La romano estas plena je inter-
eso. Oni ne povas sekvi la historion sen
bedaŭro ke tia valora verko ne pli frue
venis en siajn manojn. Post Marta mi
ŝatas pro la stilo la tradukon de Gcorgo
Dandin. Mi scias ke tiu ne estas unu
el la plej famaj verkoj de la glora
Moliere, sed mi speciale rekomendas ĝin,
pro tio, ke la stilo estas tiel simpla kaj
rekta, kaj la parolturnoj tiel signifplenaj.
ŝajnas al mi, ke la stilo de nia majstro
fariĝas konstante pli simpla, pli signifa.
En ĉiuj lastaj verkoj liaj troviĝas la
samaj admirindaj kvalitoj. Nun. post
tiuj ĉi simplastilaj kaj interesplenaj verk-

oj, Iegu ni la du grandajn klasikajn li-
brojn, Ifigenio en Taŭrido kaj La Predi-
kanto. Kaj post tiuj ĉi Hamleton. Tre
sperta kaj konata Brita Esperantisto las-
tatempe, ĵus antaŭ la apero de Marta,
diris al mi, ke Ifigenio estas la plej bona
verko de la majstro ĝis tiam aperinta.
Sendube aliaj konsilus legi ĉiujn verk-
ojn de Dro. Zamenhof, sed mi malkale
konfesas, ke mi ne egale Ŝatas ĉiujn liajn
tradukojn. Mi ofte bedaŭras ke li ne
skribis originalajn verkojn. Liaj leteroj
kaj paroladoj estas tiel mirindaj, ke oni
nature deziras legi la originalajn pensojn
de homo, kiu tiel klare rezonas kaj tiel
ĝuste kaj bonstile esprimas siajn pensojn.
Liajn leterojn kaj paroladojn mi relegas
ofte, kaj ŝatas ilin pro la stilo pli ol kelk-
ajn liajn tradukojn. Ni estas instruitaj
ke la bona esperanta tradukisto ĉiam tre
fide sekvas la stilon, eĉ la parolturnojn,
de la originalo. Nu, mi ofte trovas tiujn
ĉi parolturnojn kaj la neklaran stilon de
la aŭtoroj tradukitaj tedaj kaj malplaĉaj.
Ekzemple, tre mal facile kaj malrapide mi
sekvas partojn de La Revizoro kaj de La
Rabistoj, kaj mi ne rekomendas ilin al
lernantoj kiel modelojn de klara esper-
anta stilo. La Germanaj parolmanieroj
ne estas ĉiam rekomendindaj laŭ vid-
punkto de klareco kaj simpleco. La rusa
stilo mi konas nur per tradukoj, sed ŝaj-
nas laŭ tiuj ke ĝi devas havi multe de
neŝatindaj idiotismoj. Aliaj, mi pensas,
jam sentis tiun saman kiel mi pri tiuj 6i
du verkoj, car en la Revuo de Oktobro,
1907, Dro. Zamenhof diras "pri miaj
lastaj verkoj," ke, "se la stilo ne estas
popola, kaj se kelkaj esprimoj ne estas
klare kompreneblaj, estas la kulpo de la
aŭtoro mem, kaj ne de la tradukanto, kies
devo estas fidele traduki." Bone! Sed
mi deziras legi bonan esperantan stilon,
almenaŭ komence, kaj ne imitaĵojn de
malklara germana, rusa, franca, angla aŭ
alilanda nacia stilo. Mi ne plendas pri
Dro. Zamenhof, sed pri la aŭtoroj de li
tradukitaj, kaj komence mi preferas legi
aliajn, pli klarajn verkojn. Estas tre
bone ke ni sciigu al ĉiuj ke Esperanto
fcvŭgas por traduki tiajn verkojn, kaj ke
ni havu tiajn tradukojn, sed mi pli ŝatas
librojn skribitajn en la plej klara kaj
bona esperanta stilo.

"Kio," diris al li Zadig, "okazis al vi,
mia kara edzino? Kio povis vin tiel
ekscitegi ?"
"Ho ve!" ŝi diris, "vi estus kiel mi, se vi
estus vidinta la spektaklon Ce'kiu mi Jus
ĉeestis! Mi iris konsolonta la junan
vidvinon Kosron, kiu ĵus konstruis, de
du tagoj, tombon al sia juna edzo, apud
la rivereto, kiu tiun ĉi herbejon limigas.
Si promesis al la dioj, pro sia doloro,
restadi apud tiu tombo tiel longatempe,

Azora kriadis tiel longajn insultojn,
ĵetis riproĉojn tiel perfortajn kontraŭ la
juna vidviho, ke tiu 6i lukso de virto ne
plaĉis al Zadig.
Li havis amikon nomatan Kador, kiu
estis unu el tiuj junuloj ĉe kiu lia edzino
trovis pli grandan honestecon kaj mer-
iton ol ĉe la ceteraj; li konfide sin turnis
al li kaj fideligis lin tiom, kiom li povis,
per grandega donaco. Azora pasiginte
du tagojn ĉe amikino sur la kamparo,
revenis la trian tagon hejmen. Ploran-
taj servistoj anoncis al ŝi, ke lia edzo
subite mortis la nokton mem; ke oni ne
kuraĝis alporti al ŝi tiun malfeliĉan
sciigon, kaj ke oni Jus entombigis Zadig
en la tombon de liaj prapatroj, ĉe la fino
de la ĝardeno. Si ekploris, elŝiris siajn
harojn, kaj Juris, ke ŝi mortos. La ves-
peron, Kador petis permeson paroli kun
ŝi, kaj ambafl ploradis. La sekvantan
tagon, ili malpli ploris kaj tagmanĝis
kune. Kador konfide sciigis al Ŝi, ke lia
amiko testamentis al li la plimulton de
siaj bienoj, kaj delikate komprenigis, ke
li estus feliĉa, se li povus kun Si dividi
sian riĉecon. La sinjorino ploradis, ek-
koleris. kvietiĝis; la vespermanĝo estis
pli longa ol la tagmanĝo; oni pli kon-

fide interparoladis. Azora laŭdis la mor-
tinton, sed ŝi konfesis, ke li havis mal-
bonecojn, kiuj ne estas ĉe Kador.
Meze de l'mangado, Kador ekplendis
pro fortega doloro de lieno; la sinjorino,
malkviete kaj zorgeme rapidante, alpor-
tigis ĉiujn oleojn, per kiuj ŝi parfumas
lin, por provi ĉu iu el ili efikos por la
liendoloro.
"Cu oftcvin atakis tiu ĉi kruela mal-
sano?" ŝi diris kompateme.
"Kelkfoje ĝi min alkondukas ĝis la
bordo de l'tombo," respondis Kador;
"kaj nur unu kuracilo min povas kvietigi:
almeti sur mian flankon la nazon de viro
mortinta la antaŭan tagon."
"Jen estas stranga kuracilo, diris
Azora."
"Ne pli stranga," li respondis, "ol
la saketoj de l'sinjoro Arnon, kiuj kon-
traŭstaras la apopleksion."
Tiu ĉi argumento, aldonita al la gran-
dega merito de l'junulo, fine decidigis la
sinjorinon.
"Nu, ŝi diris, kiam mia edzo pasos el
al hieraŭa mondo en la morgaŭan mon-
don sur la ponto Tchinavar,-ĉu la an-
ĝelo Asrael malpli permesos al li pasi
tial, ke lia nazo estos iomete malpli
longa en la dua vivo ol en la unua?"
9i do alprenis razilon, kaj iris al la
tombo de sia edzo, ĝin malsekigis per
ploroj, kaj alproksimiĝis por eltranĉi la
nazon de Zadig, kiun ŝi trovis tute kuŝan-
ta en la tombo. Releviĝas Zadig, tenante
sian nazon per unu mano, kaj per la alia
haltigante la razilon.
"Sinjorino," li diris, "ne kriadu plu
tiele kontraŭ la juna Kosron: la projekto
eltranĉi mian nazon tute egalas la detur-
nigon de la rivereto."

La reĝo de la konsilejo venis laca kaj
korenua; li vokis por Hie, la pentristo,
kaj aparte parolas al li:
"Mi estas enuigita de vizaĝoj mal-
noblaj, hipokrituloj, malkuraĝuloj, fri-
ponoj! Mi malleviĝos ĝis ilia vico, sklav-
estro en reĝlando de sklavoj! Pentru
por mi pentraĵon de reala viro, gracia kaj
saĝa kaj bona; plena je la forteco de
herooj kaj' la beleco. de virineco. Ĝi
pendos en mia plej privata ĉambro, por
ke tie, kiam mi enlras, ĝi povos plenigi
mian animon per sia beleco, kaj varmigi
gin per sankta fajro."
La artisto do pentris la pentraĵon, kaj
ĝi pendiĝis en la palaca cambro; neniam
io tiel bela ornamis la belegan muron.
La reĝo, kun kapo malkovrita, rigardis
ĝin kun muta raveco, ĝis ĝi subite ek-
prenas strangan signifon, kaj ne respon-
das lian demandantan rigardon.
La formo estas tiu de lia plej fleksema
kortegulo, perfekta lau ĉiu membro; sed
la sintenado estas tiu de paĝio kiu pleni-
gas la botelegojn por li; la brovo estas
tiu de pastro kiu legadas siajn perga-
menojn frue kaj malfrue; kaj la okuloj,
tiuj de vaganta kantisto, kiu kantis ĉe
la palaca pordego. La lipoj, duone mal-
gajaj, duone ridemaj, kun dece tremema
gracio, estas la lipoj de virino, kiun li
kisis en la vendejo; sed la rideto kiu la
lipoj n plibeligas, kiel rozo kun brilo de
roso, estas la rideto de la edzino kiu lin
amas, Reĝino Ethelyn, bona kaj fidela.
"Sciiĝu do, ho reĝo," diras la artisto,
"ĉi tiun veron ke la pentraĵo diras—ke
en 6iu formo homa io dia loĝadas; ke
serĉante ĉiun vivantan templon por la
loko kie la vualo estas travidebla, ni
povas atingi per belaj videtoj la formon
de la dio interne.

Azeno iam trovinte la felon de leono,
kiun ĉasistoj lasis en la brilo de la suno
por ke ĝi sekiĝu, metis ĝin sur sin kaj
iris al la vilaĝo kie loĝis lia posedanto.
Ciu homo kaj besto forkuris ĉe lia prok-
simiĝo, kaj li estis tiun tagon azeno fiera.
Por esprimi sian ĝojon li do blekegis per
lauta voĉo, sed tiam nature ĉiu ekkonis
lin, kaj lia posedanto venis kaj forte
bategis lin per bastono pro la timego
kiun li kaŭzis. Kaj post nelonge vulpo
proksimiĝinte diris al li: "Ha, mi rekonis
vin per via voĉo."

BARCELONA CONGRESS NOTES

Barcelona is larger than St. Louis in
population, but much smaller in area.
The town actually seemed filled by our
thirteen hundred Esperantists—every-
where Esperanto flags, Esperanto badges.
We were "spotted" from afar by ven-
ders of post cards, souvenirs, daily pa-
pers and "keys." Every restaurant or-
chestra, of which there are about four
million in the town, played "La Espero,"
well knowing that the hat would not be
passed in vain. Much to the regret of
the organ grinders, that classic has not
yet been added to their repertory, but
in recognition of our liberal ideas they
gave us infinite repetition of the "Mar-
seillaise."
Possibly the children of the Barcelona
streets do not know Esperanto, but they
certainly know the meaning of the word
and will recognize the Green Flag next
time they see it. No matter how ob-
scure and dark and narrow and dirty
the street we turned into, the little fel-
lows would remark to each other "Los
Esperantistos I" as we passed by.
Selling Cefeĉ "Esperanto Keys" for
ten centimos (two cents) is not hard
work for a strong man, and several of
them were thus occupied on the Rambla
of the Flowers.
"Esperanto sounds just like Spanish"
can mean nothing but that its pronun-
ciation is beautiful and musical. You
would never get tired of hearing the
street book agents of Barcelona sing:
"Llena gramatica para aprender el Es-
peranto I"
If a Chicago policeman were to be
as polite and gentlemanly for one hour
as the City Guardsman of Barcelona
is at all times, he'd either be starring in
a museum the next day or be run oyer
by an auto truck whose driver had faint-
ed from surprise.
Some enterprising "ad" man was re-
sponsible for the wholesale free distri-
bution of daily programs of the Espe-
ranto Congress in the form of a green
paper flag. These were given out from
the newspaper kiosks every morning and
formed an attractive proof of attention
to details.
The Congress had a daily organ in
La Publicidad, one of the leading papers.
Besides articles in Esperanto, this paper
printed in Spanish a full report of the
Congress. The fact that anybody who
has learned Esperanto can with little
difficulty read Spanish is another of the
many reasons for knowing the interna-
tional language.
Every book store in Barcelona had
a display of Esperanto text-books.
People who endorse the encroach-
ments which the police of certain Amer-
ican cities have made upon the right of
free speech ought to go to Spain. Prot-
estant church services could not be men-
tioned in the official program, which had
to be vised by the censor at Madrid,
and the time and place of the socialist
meeting was communicated in whispers.
Certain enemies of Esperanto have
stated that the language "lost its grip"
in Dresden after last year's congress.
Oh, that it would suffer a similar loss
in every city! A Dresden lady won the
prize in the Floral Games at Barcelona.
A big Dresden manufacturing house
(photographic supplies) was on the spot
with a large and elegantly printed cata-
logue in Esperanto, and since the con-
gress there last year a firm has been
incorporated for the manufacture of Es-
peranto specialties. It filled two large
rooms in Barcelona with a display of
art and novelty work such as had been
seen at no previous congress, and the
representative stated that they had not
as yet "started." They have plenty of
capital and plenty of confidence in Es-
peranto.

kaj ricevis leteron de sia edzino kun la
vortoj:   "Alfredo, restu fidela al mi !"•
Tuj li telegrafas: "Bedaŭrinde ne ĝus-
tatempe ricevis la leteron."
Servistino baldaŭ forlasonta sian serv-
domon, ekoetis ke oni pagu al ŝi. Qni
pagis, ŝi kalkulis la monon, trovis ĝin
preciza kaj elirante ĵetis du frankojn al
lo hundo.
"Kial vi lasis monon al la hundo?"
demandis la domomastrino.
"Car, ĝis kiam mi servis ĉe vi, ĝi puri-
gis la manĝilaron," respondis la serv-
istino.
Infano: "Mi petas, donu al mi polvon
por puloj!"
Apotekisto: "Por kiom?"
Infano: "Ha, mi ne estas kalkulinta
ilin."
Dum la junaĝo Silero lernis la ludadon
sur harpo. Lia najbaro, nekontenta de
liaj muzikaj ekzercoj, diras al li iun
tagon:
He, Sro. Silero, vi ludas kiel Davido,
nur ne tiel bone.
Kaj vi, respondas Silero, parolas kie»
Solomono, nur ne tiel saĝe.
Greko fanfaronis kun la supereco de
sia popolo.
El Grekujo—diris li—estas elirintaj
ĉiuj saĝuloj kaj filozofoj.
Tial nun tie ne estas e6 unu! respondis
mi.
La estrino en la lernejo skribis le sek-
vantan sentencon sur la nigratavolo, kaj
demandis ke oni ĝin korektu: "La cevalo
kaj la bovino estas super la kampo."
Longatempe neniu respondis kiam su-
bite junulaco levis la manon kaj elparolis
fierege—
"La bovino kaj le cevalo estas super la
kampo—sinjorinoj unue Ĝiam!"
Oficejestro severe alriproĉas unu el
siaj subuloj: "Mi estas devigata vin
translokigi," li diras; "ne nur vi dormas
en la oficejo, sed ankaŭ vi ronkas, kaj
tio revekas ĉiumomente nian ministrejan
fakestron, kiu laboras en apuda ĉambro."
La fiŝvendistino: "Cu vi freneziĝas,
Sinjoro, ke vi alparolas miajn fitojn?"
"Tute ne, Sinjorino, nia konversacio es-
tas ja tre interesa." "Pri kio vi ilin de-
mandas?" "Pri novaĵoj de la rivero."
Kaj kion ili respondas? Ili respondas ke
ili ĝin forlasis de tro longa tempo por min
sciigi.
Kiun momenton oni elektas prefere por
rikolti la ĉerizojn? La momenton, kiam
